Fish Cottage in Scarborough

Situated in Sandsend just across the bridge from The Hart Inn. Lovely seating outside under parasols. Lovely modern interior, seaside related decor. We just had a coffee and chips, which were ok but I've had better.

I had fish tacos, husband had fish, chips and curry sauce, absolutely gorgeous, one of best meals had for a while. Staff very friendly and efficient. Definitely be back.👍

Amazing fish cooked to perfection, best chips ever, very tasty mushy peas!!! Coming back every time when visiting Whitby. Nice beer to go with it as well.

Had a fantastic meal at the fish cottage, I arrived at 4, the food was absolutely fire! Don't think it would be a stretch to say the customer service was out of this world, here's the thing: it's clear to me that the man behind the counter was a polite young man who was friendly to all, once again, absolutely fantastic, would recommend!

Absolutely gorgeous food , great atmosphere. Long wait but it was a bank holiday weekend and tea time but worth the wait. Food and drinks with outside tables with a sea view Reasonably priced . Fish tacos looked delicious and family said they were , I went for traditional fish and chips and they were excellent 👌 Will definitely return when next up on the coast

The young girl who served us looked so bored and obviously didn't want to be there so my first impression wasn't a good one. There were about 10 chips in the box and 6 pieces of overcooked greasy scampi. The chips were clearly cooked from frozen. Battered sausage that my husband had was the cheapest tasteless bit of offal. (Not Yorkshire sausage) £19.50! So I would definitely not recommend and certainly won't return.

Fantastic little place which was very busy on a sunny Sunday afternoon when we ate in the restaurant but what a great experience we had. All 4 of us had amazing food along with fab service by friendly people. The restaurant was buzzing but that didn’t stop us having such a memorable experience. Thank you to all involved, highly recommend and can’t wait to return 😎 take away looked fab too. What a gem of a “fish and chip” shop!

Absolutely fantastic in every way! What a way to round off a perfect day.

Having been here numerous times before, we thought we knew what we were getting. Wrong! Something has definitely changed. Whilst the fish was lovely hence the three stars, the chips were awful. Pale and just to say cooked, most were black and inedible. Definitely not your usual standard. What's worse, is the portion sizes. Much smaller than normal, and at £15.50 for a large fish and chips. It's really beyond a joke, it's almost insulting to expect people to top pay top prices for poor quality. You also need to ensure the staff wear protective clothing, and cover their hair when serving food. Please also advise staff not to touch their faces and use their mobile phones, then serve customers food. They need to be washing their hands before any food handling. It's basic hygiene.

A Solid Seaside Choice - 4 Stars We recently visited Fish Cottage in Sandsend and had a very enjoyable experience. We ordered the sausage and chips and the Chef's Fishcake and chips. Both dishes were tasty and well-prepared. The chips were particularly good - crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The service was also commendable. Our server was friendly, attentive, and efficient. The overall atmosphere of the place was relaxed and welcoming, perfect for a seaside meal. While the food and service were great, I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because there wasn't anything that particularly blew me away. It was a very good, solid meal, but not exceptional. Overall, Fish Cottage is a great choice for a satisfying meal in Sandsend. I would definitely recommend it and we would return.

Fish cottage has a dog friendly restaurant and a wonderful takeaway as well. The food was wonderful and the service first class. My partner had the fish and chips and I chose hake with a lemon butter sauce. Both were absolutely delicious! And our dog was fussed over by everyone. Can't wait to come back.

I saw this place on social media and being quite a drive from it, I've waited over a year to try it. Definitely didn't disappoint and was worth the wait. Cute cosy setting outside, we had the dog with us so didn't go inside. Food was fresh generous portions and the fish Tacos were a hit!. Really nice place, I'll definitely go back if we are in the area again.

Couple of nice fish dishes, good wine, nice surroundings and fresh ingredients. The only thing that could have made it better if it was warm enough to eat outside on the terraces. Lovely.

This is a very popular place to eat, both inside and outside. The table service inside was excellent, and booking is essential. The hatch outside is for takeaways, and bench tables are provided for this

Feels incredibly overrated. Ordered and weren't given any information about wait times but were kept waiting over an hour for tacos (a few bits of fried fish in a tortilla with some salsa-type ingredients) and crab chips (chips with the same salsa and some potted crab on top) in takeaway containers. The only two freshly-prepared bits were the fish and chips, so I can't understand why it takes so long. Quality was ok but certainly nothing special, I could wrap up another generic chip shop's fish and jizz some potted crab over their chips and get the same result. Service was really poor - no information about wait times, no awareness of customers, ordering and collection through the same one tiny hatch with plenty of confusion and no queue system. Honestly cannot overstate what a colossal disappointment this place was.

Had a regular fish and chips and scampi as we were in a rush. The food was great. Prices are higher than a regular fish and chips but food it's fresh. Totally worth it

Really nice location, good atmosphere, well organised ordering system but the fish and chips were average at best. I'd wager no beef dripping used... The battered sausage I wouldn't of fed to my dog, was Richmond budget at best, could of been vegan? Safe to say the Mrs had the chips and left it.

Booked a table for 1 in the nook was told there was a vicious dog in there and as I had 2 quiet dogs with me was put on a table next to the toilet where apparently they don’t usually put dogs. People were coming in and out to the toilet was very uncomfortable and stressful! I felt pushed on to a table as I was only 1 person. They then took another party of 2 with dogs into the nook on the table I had booked online! Maybe you should have toilet outside for takeaway clients? It’s an expensive restaurant and to be sat eating with people coming in and out of the toilet ! I have been many times and love the food and the service I request the nook to be away from the toilet with my dogs. It was a stressful and unpleasant experience.

This is in a great location, the menu is creative - especially the fish tacos. It is a well supported restaurant run brilliantly by Gary and ‘Jack the lad’ who despite being busy had time for a laugh. Look forward to visiting again. Well done to the team for making our evening.

Fish great, chips not edible, complained to a member of staff who was not interested and walked away , staff members attitude as bad as the chips. Has this place changed hands ? not usual high standard, Restaurant empty but fully booked.

Kind of thought it was place to eat as it looks extremely popular when you pass.. Paid for 1 hrs parking (£2) up the road, put our order of 2 portions of fish tacos and deep fried chicken and chips in for our daughter, a can of coke with a juice that was included with the kids meal. Had to collect our van before our order was even ready.. Not only was the waiting time a pain but the food was a massive disappointment too, really cheap oily chicken and chips and our tacos weren’t even hot! If you decide it looks like a nice place to eat, just keep in mind the waiting time.. we were given a bleeper as was everyone else, we just hadn’t realised everyone else was in the same boat as us.. lots of people sitting down drinking but not a lot eating Sandsend is a lovely place but there’s far better places to eat for much less just up the road.

We did come one sunny day, at around 4 pm. It seemed reasonably busy, and we opted for takeaway. We weren't told of a wait, but it was obvious that they were busy. However, we waited 50 minutes for takeaway, which is an extremely long time to take away fish and chips.. my partners fishcake was nice, but my fish burger was all bun and nothing else. It was extremely disappointing after waiting that long and hungry. Some of my chips weren't cooked all the way through either, but again, my partner's were. We'd possibly try it again, with the hope it'd be nicer. My advice would be to give people a time frame, even if it's over estimating at the time of order, and ensure quality reflecting the pricing and atmosphere.

Well priced good quality seafood. We sat out the front on a lovely quiet Monday morning only for the most dreadful music to start being blared out of their outside speakers. Very odd and not for a pleasant Monday morning.

Amazing food and a lovely place to sit and enjoy it on a warm day. Fish Tacos are a must have! Parking is available but could be a struggle as it is quite busy. However, it's a short walk from the pay and displays by the beach which are 60p for an hour

Went to this lovely restaurant today, ordered food and it cost £30 without drinks. It was cold so we asked if we could sit indoors. The woman said yes would have to pay the small price for sitting indoors. The charge was £21 wow I couldn't believe it so expensive.

15 minute ride on the bus from Staithes to Sandsend, lovely friendly staff and has a wide variety of seafood options, the food and house wine were delicious and I highly recommend this place but please phone to book a table as this is a very popular place, also has a takeaway chip shop too.

No wonder why this place got so busy during lunch time on the Monday. The food taste so good and decent portion size. Highly recommend if you visit Sandsend or surrounding area.

Perfect spot for lunch on a sunny day Lots of outdoor seating if you're not dining in, although with large tables and benches it encourages a more communal dining experience. A good way to make friends with strangers. Changeable menu, fresh seafood, selection of drinks, although the drinks are quite expensive at £3 for a single can of pop. Going to be thinking about the fish tacos for a long time!

We called in to see if they had any space for 2, looking round lots of tables free. The chap who was at the front desk was rude in his approach said they had nothing free and just walked away! We got back in the car and found another place that was lovely and the service outstanding… customer service needs improvement

Found the Fish Cottage by chance on a coastal walk. Stunning food, great service. When back in area this will certainly be a revisit

Think the ownership of this place has changed. Meal was very disappointing, flat cod with unpleasant batter, chips soggy and cold and floating in cold foul tasting grease. We were given a gift card by family to use for the summer of £50 the meal two times cod and chips with mushy peas was £29. We were told that if we didn’t spend the rest we would lose it! No option to keep the £21 left. Ended up paying cash. Owner wasn’t polite about it either. This needs a rethink by the owners with option of return paper voucher for the remainder or sort out your IT to deduct electronically. This place has declined in standards and value. We won’t be coming back that’s for sure and sad because the his was always our go to place when visiting Whitby and Sandsend which provided beautiful thick white flaky cod with golden batter and now it’s flat, dry dark old batter with soggy chips

Came last april. Fabulous. Returned tonight..... not. Overcooked squid. Plaice good but TINY. Shocking seafood linguine. Prawns an clams. Nothing else. Dry, unseasoned. it was superb last time. Main issue ... freezing. Really cold. Like, REALLY cold. Staff great. Put tea towels over window gaps. Was still eating in wind tunnel. Coats on to eat.. Not acceptable. Really dissapointing. £250 for 4. Not on the money. Sadly wont be back. Lost its way.... Shame. ( cod cheeks and scallops starters really good. Take a big coat and hat).

I have never been to a restaurant or anywhere where there are chips or fish where I have to buy ketchup or mayonnaise. Outrageous. Scampi very bland

A complete rip off.£48.00 for 2 half of lobster. With next to no meat inside.Chips were a bowl of scraps.I had a word with the staff.And very very disappointed with his attitude. As we were there we did here other people complaining also.I also rung the next day to speak to the manager who wasn't there. The staff said he would call me the next day but never did.He made his waiter do the dirty work.

A very disappointing dinner. One of us had the cod and chips which to be fair looked good but the other dinner, lobster & fries, was a joke! The most miserable, over cooked, tiny bit of tail meat and an over cooked claw presented in a half shell. Had I not just come out of hospital the day before and it was actually my birthday dinner I’d have refused the offering. I’m mad with myself for NOT have made more of a complaint but I just didn’t have the energy. Did make it known however that it was unacceptable. The restaurant manager took off a small bottle of water and removed the service charge from the bill (for two people) as compensation. His service was excellent but don’t bother with the lobster!

We sat in for an evening meal and had a lovely meal, would definitely recommend. Good fresh oysters, between us we had halibut, tacos and classic fish and chips as mains and all thought highly of them.

Best fish and chips that I can remember eating. Cod - brilliant. Haddock - Outer Space! It's not super cheap, but I've had a lot worse at a couple of Ivys... Just don't miss the turning!

Cold wintery fish and chips. Perfect 👌🏼 Parked a 3-minute walk away for a couple of quid, then sat outside on the benches. Family of 5 for about £35. Cheap as chips 🍟

The atmosphere of the restaurant was really nice and great location however that is what you are paying for ! the service was okay , however we had to pay a mandatory service charge that we felt was unfair , we would of tipped, however felt the added service charge cheeky. We also felt the price was too experience for what we got for example £4 for a hot chocolate, however £2.50 for a coffee. Also a freind had fish Goujons that has bones in it that was not the safety and that cost her £12 where my squid that was £10 and chips at £4 that was a nibble and side cost more , so feeling a bit ripped off with the price and the quality as the squid was nice but only small pieces and the chips weren’t anything special for £4 very small portions and thin French fries. Was a shame as my freind and I have eaten here in the past and really enjoyed it - left feeling a bit ripped off on a cold January Friday. Bill came to £35.50 that normal we would not mine but just felt pissed off

Walked from Whitby to Sandsend and had been recommended the Fish Tacos at Fish Cottage No tables available inside, so recommended to book (it was between Xmas and New Year though) We were happy enough to grab takeaway and eat outside. Ordered a Crab fries, Fish Tacos and Prawn Tacos - all really delicious! The tacos were great! Nice atmosphere sitting outside. Highly recommend! 🎣🌮

Major disappointment having eaten here so many times, We bring our own condiments and sit in the car and normally eat a wonderful British fish and chips meal. Not today. A fifty mike drive in the sun and we were greeted (not really greeted nicely ) by an almost surly manager-type, ordered two haddock and chips and rubbed our hands together in glee as we waited for our take-outs. Briefly it looked good good on first inspection. But it was very greasy, the chips looked like they’d been recycled or scraped from the bottom of the pan and were mostly tiny crunchy scraps which had been cooked in over-used poor quality oil. Taste stays in mouth and will be a reminder - if one is needed - that it will be a while before a re-visit. I note that the most recent reviews are five months old. Has it been taken over? Burners being cut to pay the bill? Anayway, thankfully I have some mints in the car and they will remove the bad taste.

No disabled access. Extremely crowded in August. However, online booking, reception and service kind, thoughtful and efficient.

This plaice, 🤣, well, we've had an amazing meal, a load of amazing drinks, and after asking, Simon and Laura have served and entertained us this entire evening. Absolutely amazing and We (four of us) really don't think it would be the same without them. Service, TOP NOTCH!! And a hard Martini to get right, properly spot on, has made the evening perfect. Thankyou Fish Cottage, But more importantly, Thankyou Simon and Laura. Pop on over for a meal and some drinks, and you will not be dissappointed

Ate there today. The best Whitby Crab Arrancini served with samphire, garlic mayo, sea salt and chives was the best meal I have tasted in a long time.

Abysmal service.... Booked three weeks before our day trip for two people. Apparently, unknown to us there was a party booking that shunted our cramped table to just outside the toilets. We were offered a bar stool and exceptionally high bar table as an uncomfortable alternative.... Can't comment about the food as we didn't stay. The manager just shrugged and opened the door for us as we left. Very disappointing for such a high priced restaurant!

Delicious food at very reasonable prices. We had fish and chips, salt and pepper squid, kids nuggets and the fish tacos and all were really tasty and good portion sizes. It was an extremely busy day and there was no where to sit but we didn't mind waiting. The wait was around 30 minutes which I didn't think was too bad given the amount of people ordering.

I don’t normally write reviews, but in this case I thought that I would, the food was ok, I wouldn’t complain, but at the same time I have had better. The atmosphere was spoilt by the moody and horrible post AHA Morten Harket gentleman serving at the takeaway kiosk, it seemed that his whole world was ruined by actually serving someone with a little smile! Or even just being pleasant to a customer. To me that was a real shame. We came two years ago and the staff were lovely! I can only assume that when AHA split up, Morten took it over….

Can't rate the food as we never got ours, stood waiting at the window to be ignored while people walked up complaining they had been waiting 40 minutes for their food, we made our order and paid then the bit of a kid behind the counter said they didn't have what we had ordered, I asked for a refund and my wife asked how long we would be waiting due to us paying on card she was unsure if it would just be sent back, the kid behind the counter was rude, obnoxious and short of a smack in the mouth and the manager "gary" wasn't much better allowing her to speak to customers that way, decided to drive into whitby and had the best meal at mr chips

Excellent takeaway fish and chips, super quick service and much less crowded than the many takeaways in nearby Whitby. We sat by the sea and devoured it. Delicious and highly recommended.

Absolutely love this place, we always go when we stay over in our motorhome, im gutted we will no longer be going due to the motorhome parking restrictions, feel sorry for great businesses like this that will be affected. Hopefully, I will be there this weekend for one last time.
