Fish & Chips at the Pier in Tendring

Don’t take card, either they’re on the fiddle or want their business to fail, who doesn’t accept card payments in 2024 ?? Rude staff… The chap who seemed to be either the manager or at least senior enough, verbally confronted me across the premises when I said jokingly I’d have a word with the Pier management about the Chip shop not accepting card payments - he said ‘What are they gonna do?’ Obviously this chap had not had the best day that day, or, he doesn’t have a great working relationship with the Pier management. Anyhow, his loss, there’s other places to buy chips in Clacton. I won’t be spending my cash there again.

Over priced small portion even though it was a large. Complete rip off. Staff have no customer service skills. . . . . .ghghhg

service was quick food was okay but was way to oily i’ve never had food served that oily, that wasn’t a big problem but what really threw me off was a man of staff put his bare hands where the chips that gets served to customers are cooked and ate a chip twice of my knowledge that didn’t impress me or the people i was with at all it seems like bad hygiene. to know: it’s cash only but as it’s in front of the pier you can go in the arcade to a cash machine.

This was Plan C for us, as the two other fish and chips restaurants were full when we wanted to eat. No problem as the food was really nice - cod, chips and a gherkin for £10. Good service from the young ladies serving as well. No inside seating so may be cold before you finish eating outside.

Best fish and chips ever , highly recommended and the staff were great because they served the children and talked to them as if they were adults and they absolutely loved that , will be going back asap

Rude staff the guy who works or mangers the shop has no respect for customers , moved our table while we was sitting eating , and then was told we not allowed to eat at the table even thought we had purchased food , then took pictures of us with our kids to use for banning us as we challenged his customer service skills for the way he treated up as paying customers

Myself and friends hired a beach hut for the day and after a fairly long walk to get chips were handed them on trays, my friend asked for something to wrap them with, the girl cooking the chips threw some bags onto the counter and as it was a windy day they all but 1 blew away, we asked for a few more only to be met with utter disgust. After being handed (literally) 6 portions of chips we asked for a small tray for some sauces only for the 2 girls serving to say about how they weren’t allowed to give them out as they cost 50p each, begrudgingly they handed one over after we explained that all the chips weren’t for us to eat and that we had a walk back with them. Over all the chips were lovely, shame we wouldn’t go back though due to the rudeness of your staff. Perhaps some customer service training might come in handy..

Really good fish & chips, we were surprised given the reviews weren’t amazing but the large portion of chips was huge we couldn’t finish it! The cod was small but fine for me, the batter was light and lovely. The curry sauce was also really good! Only thing I didn’t like was the salt and vinegar chained to the tables outside! If that is really necessary you could do with some longer chains as they are difficult to manoeuvre. I ended up covering myself in vinegar 🤣

Very tasty fish and chips but quite small portion for the price. Also on the day I visited there was a massive queue and no seating available.

Visited here twice during our stay at Clacton and on each occasion really enjoyed our meal. The chips where lovely and fish nice and fresh. Would recommend a meal here.

Absolutely gorgeous kids chicken nuggets and chips. Pipping hot, cooked fresh and really tasty. Will definitely eat here again when we next visit clacton pier!

We are used to london prices and this place felt the same but the chips were lovely and we will be back!

Although they had no plaice when they said they had, they explained their mistake and I had haddock instead. Great tasting fish with a light batter and good chips.

Not good im afraid, Batter not cooked enough, chips luke warm, In my opinion not value for money! shame really!!

Found next to the entrance to Clacton Pier, Fish & Chips at the Pier aims to provide what it says. When we entered, the lady at the till was very polite and helpful and there was a lot on offer including cheesy chips. However, it took a little while to get the order. We had order cod and cheesy chips. The cod looked really big. However, when we started trying to get to the fish, what we found was a lot of batter which all peeled off but very little fish. If you want the seaside experience, find somewhere else to have fish and chips.

Visited today. Worst fish and chips I’ve ever had. Brilliant location so should be busy all day long. Walked straight up and ordered, no queues, that should have alarm bells ringing. Arrived quickly but food was awful. Totally tasteless. I will not return again ever.

We had a regular portion of chips mid afternoon last week and whilst our nephew enjoyed them I thought they were very average, outer was too crisp and thick! And as for the cans of drink, they charge £1.50 talk about taking the piss and having a laugh, its only a chippy not a restaurant

Came here after Clacton air show. It was very busy but the fish and chips were great. Piping hot and great location by the beach.

The one foot is for the view. Nothing to recommend this place. Batter was too thick. Cooking temp was too low so the whole thing was damp and oily. I did show the manager who offered a replacement which I did not take. I ate the cod and some of the chips so did not ask for a refund. But seriously - this is all they do! They should be able to get this one thing right!

went to the pier in clacton it is wonderful from the fish and chips to the wonderful fortune teller and she is just the best.and when you come off the pier a great shell fish stall i had a great time

Lovely staff clean premises and plenty of outdoor seating. This is our regular chip show when we go to Clacton cannot recommend enough!

Visited here for a quick bit of lunch, cash only, which is a pain when most establishments take cards , the lady on the till was polite enough, our order was incomplete , so I asked for this to be rectified, I was met with complete contempt and rudeness , made me feel like a liar and a cheat, absolutely disgusted . The food was at best average.And paying 30pence for sauce sachets is a rip off. Will never visit here again, disgraceful customer service .

I visited here with my Husband and Son on Saturday afternoon. We ordered scampi,mushy peas, a battered sausage and chips. Unfortunately as soon as I got outside the door with my food, I dropped the whole portion of scampi and chips. I let the restaurant know as I didn't want to just leave the mess on the floor. The staff were so lovely and made us another fresh batch on the house and brought this out to us.

Ordered burger & chips. Big mistake. Nice chips but burgers are rank. Cheap nasty tasting burger dripping in grease. Probably one of the worst burgers ever.Took one bite & chucked the rest to the seagulls. Complete waste of money. Never again.

Despite being very busy, we didn’t have to wait long for our order. Staff were helpful & friendly & the food was delicious. The cod was beautifully flaky with a delicious batter & the chips spot on.

We came yesterday with family and ordered 7x fish and chips and 4 slushes to enjoy on the super hot day. The fish was divine, cooked fresh, piping hot, super crispy batter and juicy flaky fish! The chips were superb.

this restaurant is alright for a quick lunch the food is alright but nothing special the staff were alright as well

Always fast and fresh, fab chips & lovely batter. Good sized portions, never greasy & very hot. Don’t be put off by the queue, very efficient and quick.

Whilst visiting the pier with the grandchildren..after they had been on every ride at least once..we all got hungry..so had Fish and Chips..the fish was great lovely and white..and very reasonably priced.

Alright i've got a bloody big cod bone to pick with youse lot...

Love this place! Cooked fresh every time! Sit out side on bench with me wooden fork and enjoy every mouth full! Never disappointed! Can get bit busy peak times but worth queuing up for!

We went for the day and called at this fish shop it was really amazing fish and chips ,Fish was pure white and fresh, chips was very tasty hot and we will vist again just sad he is so far away for where we live ,other fish shops need to take a look at this place as we got a great meal for our money Thankyou................

Was great having Fish and chips after spending hours on pier..visited in September..Fish had lovely crispy batter and chips were cooked fresh..we all enjoyed it..including the kids.

Came for lunch, we got two fish and chips, huge portions and tasted lovely and fresh, kids enjoyed it as well, will be back

scampi and salad is delicious big portions,seating available eat in or takeaway friendly staff service quick although gets quite packed food so good .wheelchair friendly.

Very very disappointed I'm gluten intolerant asked if they could do me anything the ladies reply was no whilst sneering at me. Also forgot to give me the drinks for children's meals. Basically rude shall never visit again

The chips by the pier is great and having fish which isn't bad just a bit too much batter but fish inside was good but overall it was well wort it

We visited last week after taking the children on some rides and arcades, sausage, fish and chips and curry sauce were all very nice, shame about the exceptionally rude service we received! The staff are extremely miserable and made us feel really unwelcome..we sat outside near the door and they were just staring at us....? No need for it at all!

Need i say more? Greasy fish and chips. Rude staff that dont speak or understand english properly. 25p for a sachet of ketchup but you need it to mask some of the grease flavour. Somehow i dont think we will bother again

Lovely food but the manner and attitude of the women serving us was the worst I have seen in a long time. Despite getting our order wrong and us having to wait again, no apology was given. Instead the women behind the counter started complaining about us whilst we and other customers were stood listening.

Although this was busy at all times the service was quick and the food was hot and fresh! There is plenty of tables and chairs, but why not sit on the beach!!

Served by 2 surly women who need to improve their customer service skills. Chips were under cooked and I would not go here again or recommend. Much better chip shops 2 minutes walk away.

The food here is absolutely gorgeous. I've always been a huge fan of seaside chip shops, but this place beats everything else. The chips are to die for and best of all, they are very reasonably priced.

Friendly staff, very great of traditional fish (cod, plaice or haddock) and Chucky yummy chips. Not enough seating but lots of places to seat on the pier. They don't accepts bank cards so take some money. The shop itself is quite small and the quantity of for could be a bit bigger.

We always grab a bite from here when we visit every so often, lovely little cafe shame just outside seating

The food is lovely and staff helpful but there is only outdoor seating so on a cold day it can be uncomfortable.

My friends and I visited Fish & Chips at the pier in September 2015 I had the Haddock and chips. The fish was lovely but the chips were a bit undercooked. Still, lovely to sit by the seaside eating fish and chips!

Stopped here for seaside fish and chips and it was very enjoyable. Well cooked and very tasty. Fair value for money

Went the with the wife and 2 kids Was just for a snack Chips were v nice hot But sausage in batters was very greasy I only had one bite out of mine.Price was quite reasonable Would go again but for chips only

We decided to eat here as there was always a queue (fast-moving) of customers - always a good sign. We weren't disappointed. The chips were some of the best I have ever tasted and the batter on the fish was so light and tasty that we would gladly have had that on its own.Beware, though, that it is cash only. Don't join the queue if you only have plastic ...

Visited Fish and chips at the Pier yesterday. I was amazed at the perfectly cooked fish. White and fluffy with golden batter which was not hard and crispy nor soft and soggy, just right!Chips were also perfectly cooked and neither fish or chips were dripping in oil. Sat outside in the sun. A perfect end to a tiring afternoon on the Pier with the grandkids.

Surprised by the negative reviews if I'm honest. We ate here 3 times during our stay in clacton.1st time food was absolutely lovely hence going back a 2nd time. 2nd time portion sizes were bigger and we couldn't finish our food. Hate wasting food. Food tasted good though... 3rd time was lovely again.Seating area wasn't tidy and finding tidy table was hard but it was very busy when we went. Portion sizes are not consistent which makes it difficult to plan your dinner on a following visit. Either way the food was nice, staff were OK, not rude but not overly friendly. I look forward to going here again!

As I reside in Clacton on sea I after trying many fish & chips to try and find the best?I found the best fish always fresh cooked for you and chips cooked properlyTruly I believe this is the best I have tasted in the last two years

We stopped off for a quick bite to eat as the young godson was demanding "cold chips" ( don't ask) we ordered him some chips all the same and the fish looked really tasty so I had a small cod and a pot of curry sauce. I wasn't disappointed at all. The fish was perfect, the battery was crispy and light and the chips were really moreish. I have to say the curry sauce was fantastic and unlike most places it was thick and sticky and not watery. I was really impressed and once the little man's chips had cooled off enough he ate the entire lot. Although the weather was hot it was relatively quiet but it was cooked to order and we all really enjoyed it. Perhaps the other comments on this place were during peak or busy weekends but I think it's worth a go.

We asked a member of staff from the pier if there were any good seafood restaurants in Clacton, he replied no but recommended fish and chips at the pier, so being hungry we went there, must say it was very average, fish and chips greasy. Staff were lovely, Would we go there again, sorry but no.

From the undercooked pie, through the anemic chips, to the filthy wobbly tables. If you're going to sell Fish and Chips, at the entrance to a seaside British pier, you'd better be good. Sadly, this place falls far below expectations. I'm being generous by not mentioning the passive/aggressive signage, or the indifferent staff. This is a place that has to be avoided.

Spent the day at Clacton and looked to get some fish and chips to top the day off. Was hesitant to go to this shop but after we found ALL the other shops had closed by 7 we were forced here.I must say, I'm glad we got to go here as the batter was spot on and the chips were also gorgeous! Left happy and full - bravo!

We had fish and chips at the Pier and it was average- the fish was slightly on the oily side and the chips were ok.It was a very quiet day at the pier and the shop it self needed a good tidy up as there were left over boxes and untidy tables which hadn't been cleared away.

We gabbed a bag of chips each to eat on the beach. The portion size is poor. Chips were soggy, greasy & fishy. I found bits of batter in my chips so im assuming that the fish is cooked in the same oil.Over all the food, service & hygiene is poor. A shame.

This is the first time that I have been to this restaurant, ordered sav and chips and also batter sausage. The chips were great and crispy, my only complaint is I wish fish and chip shops would us better quality sausages. I will be back next time in clacton.

I popped in 6pm on a Sunday and enjoyed a tasty burger and chips. The chips were so tasty, no taste of oil or fat.

After meeting some of my husband's family on the beach, we decided lunch would be a bag (or in this case, tray) of chips. These were lovely and possibly some of the best chips I have tasted. We all enjoyed these, with and without salt, vinegar, curry sauce or peas.Even my 1 year old nephew enjoyed sharing my chips! Would recommend these to all to try.

This Fish and Chip shop is ALWAYS busy in the summer, which is testament to its quality. Hubby and I have never eaten chips from this place before, but it was a lovely day and we just fancied a treat. The queue is always quite long, but once you get to the front, you give your order and wait for it to be freshly cooked....remember there was a queue, so you will be waiting a few minutes for your order. We only ordered a portion of chips and thought that they may be dished up by someone just doing chips, but no....we had to wait for families whole meals to be cooked who were in the queue before us. I think they could perhaps look into that; so that there is someone who can just dish up a polystyrene tray of chips!! The curry sauce is also gorgeous which is a bonus. I cannot eat chips on their own, must dunk them in curry sauce lol.For a chippy that's ON THE PIER, It's reasonably priced and they do a wide range of food to suit really young children too - like a good old Turkey Dinosaur or a Fish Cake at reasonable prices. If you are lucky to get a table outside, then great - If not, have a slow mooch on the Pier and make everyone drool with the Gorgeous smell.

Such lovely food well cooked, not greasy, and the kids dinosaur turkey shapes were great for the little boy. Service was really quick and so well organised. Great fish and chips

Located right at the front of Clacton pier we thought we would have some fish & chips and sure enough it was very tasty and the portions were massive and wasn't overpriced at all. all i ordered was just the normal size cod and a small chips! I do recommended to anyone who wants good quality and value fish and chips!

Located at the side of clacton pier this cafe/chippy serves up some good honest british food at decentish prices. When the sun is shining they same to taste even better!

At the time, there was only two pieces of fish left, the fish and chips were nice but the batter was greasy and soggy.

Located directly next to the pier, this chippy is great! A little pricey, but due to the location to the pier and beach, they an charge! No fault with the food, and always visit on a trip to Clacton!

We decided to eat here on a trip to Clacton Pier. The food we ordered would usually cost around £5 but came to £8 here! The pace was so crowded that there were people eating at the table where the salt and vinegar were chained, right in the doorway! For some reason they also served my order (chips, 2 sausage & bread roll) in 4 separate food trays making it a struggle to shuffle through the crowd with my food, bag and 4 year old in tow! Definitely wouldn't repeat this experience.

A gem of a place for fish n chips. It's not a restaurant but a chippy that you can sit inside or out depending on the weather. Well worth a visit.

The food here is so expensive. For example I ordered some food from this restaurant and it came to £9.50 whereas I could order the exact same thing where I live and it would come to £5 the portion would also be bigger. The food wasn't the best. The actual restaurant wasn't the cleanest either with salt and vinegar all over the table. I wouldn't eat here again.

Sitting outside just to the left of clacton pier great place to people watch we just had chips but the fish looked good and there was a lot of empty plates,we had coffee and tea not expensive and although we only had chips the staff didn't rush us to leave

The service was weak, none of the personal ask the normal ? "was everything ok". the food was lacking flavor and eye appeal.

So much oil still on the fish that the chips got saturated and ran around the bottom of the tray. The batter fell off easily and I ended up with a mashed up mess! Salt and vinegar bottles held down with twisted wires tangled together. I could go on.....

On a family holiday one being a 4 month old baby. stopped here for some lunch. The staff seemed more bothered about taking your money than good service although the food was very nice we also asked for some hot water for baby's bottle to an abrupt answer of 'no we're not allowed' but no other suggestion or help of where to get some, which I asked around and was able to get from the bistro bar inside the arcade.

Cosy shop, Had a quick lunch here with my family, 4 large chips and drinks for all 6 of us.Fast friendly service, Lovely decent portions of chips, can't fault them.

Excellent Whitby scampi and chips big wedge of lemon. Can sit outside and watch happy seaside people decor very good cannot beat cleaniless very accomodating made scampi well done.

Chips were lovely and fresh cooked. Same goes for the fish..lovely and fresh. The only problem was the variable batter. Some bits were crispy, others were really soggy / still paste. Another plus it's the size of the gherkins they sell.... HUGE!!

When having a day out at the seaside,and visiting the pier,there is nothing better than nice hot fish and chips,freshly cooked,it makes a good day out.

A group of 11 of us were looking forward to fish n chips. Me particular as I am gluten free. I was excited as ever to have gluten free fish n chips by the seaside...a very rare treat. Unfortunately when I ask I was told they were to busy to do it. I was very disappointed by this.I told my group to get there's as they were looking forward to their lunch! They said the fish was very good. I just enjoyed the smell!!

Have had fish and chips here on several occasions when visiting the pier with the little ones,and the quality has always been good,lovely white flakey cod.RECOMMENDED.

Really quick yet well cooked food. Mix of fish or sausage and chips across the family, all happy customers. Not greasy and great fish. Was busy so you need to be lucky to get a table in season.

A refreshing new look for a fish and chip shop.Not only fried but grilled as well. New garden peas, not just mushy.Nice and tasty. Decor nice and bright.

The best fish and chips by a mile! The fish was superb, really thick and juicy in a lovely light, crispy batter and complemented by delicious chips. The restaurant is very clean and the service is speedy. You can have a takeaway or sit inside at no extra charge. There are also lots of tables outside. The portions are excellent, a large fish and standard chips was enough for 2 of us to share. Enjoyed every mouthful. If you're in Clacton, don't miss out!

The fish was really nice, suculant and actually had taste instead of the blannd taste you normally get elswhere the service was great and as its cooked to order its computerized so as you order its in cooking in about 30 seconds and takes 6/7 mins to cook well worth a visit if you like great fish and chips.
