Fish Borough Market in Southwark

Completely overrated. Basically, the hype and the fryer carries the food.

Quite disappointing.... Let’s just say the soft-shell crab bun was below expectations. (around 20 pounds with chips so not cheap!) The menu had 12.5% discretionary service is applicable but they gave me the check with 13.5% service charge The waiters were friendly and that’s the only positive thing from my visit.

What an enchanting evening at Fish! My father and I came for a meal and we absolutely loved it. We were looked after by the amazing Florin, he was super attentive and friendly, genuinely some of the best service I’ve ever experienced. Throughout our meal my father and I went “thinks definitely one to come back to”. We started with the Thai Fish Cakes and the Prawn Cocktail. Both were full of flavor and delicious. I went for the classic Cod and chips and my father, the Lobster. I the batter on the cod ACTUALLY had flavor unlike a lot of the cheap ones you get and it was well balanced , not too thick nor thin and I just loved the peas. My father’s lobster was so juicy and tender, he loved it. For desert I went for the crème brûlée, and my father had 3 scoops of ice cream/sorbet. No regrets all around 10/10 meal. The Barman makes a fine negroni but there is an extensive wine list available as well.

Nothing special for the shop to be a fish&chips award winner. Baked fish at a German fair is just as good. £15 is also too expensive.

A great place located in the heart of Borough Market, welcoming and pleasant. We didn't have a reservation, which could have been problematic for a Saturday evening. Despite everything, the manager did his best to find 4 places, with a direct view of the kitchens. Seeing the chef and his employees working all evening to produce quality dishes so quickly was quite a spectacle! Our dishes, 4 fish & chips made from haddock, were swallowed in just a few moments. Simply delicious. The service was provided with grace and efficiency.

Been here a couple of times and when we lived near Wimbledon we went to the sister restaurant. Fish is always cooked to perfection and the staff are hard working but still make time to be friendly.

The worst fish & chips I've ever eaten! I wouldn't give a star if that were possible. Completely unseasoned. Fish was dry and tasted more like an 'old sponge' and the fries were totally sticky. We were fooled by the 'Fish & Chips Award Winner' sign. I'm annoyed that I didn't complain about this given the crowds. Only the Borough Market is great! Great market that is worth a visit!

I went to their stall outlet & it’s only OK & there are better food options. The chips were a bit soggy but the batter crispy. I won’t be returning. Ordered the Sea Bass & chips with tartare

Restaurant specializing in fish and chips, but not only, on the edge of the Borough Market, nice atmosphere, a more or less quiet oasis on the edge of the chaotic market with medium-high prices, but within the city standard. This restaurant could also be discreet, too bad they served us a fried cod infested with a parasitic worm found dead in the fish and quite dangerous for our health and they justified themselves by simply saying that sometimes it can happen and subtracting it from the final bill. Unacceptable

Had some oysters. They were good. Had the Haddock fish and chips. It was excellent. Also had the grilled sardines from the specials menu. Best fish and chips I've had to date. (**Disclaimer** it's been about 23 years since I had fish and chips in the UK. My other experiences have been the US kind, which is pure rubbish.)

Two of us dined. I had Mackerel and the wife had Salmon. Starters were Fish soup and Calamari. Everything was delicious. Atmosphere and staff beautiful. Thanks x

Great fish restaurant, I had the soft shell crab burger - which I appreciate isn't for everyone, but one of my favourite foods. The rest of the group had a mixture of different fish dishes and they all loved theirs too.

It is very popular, hundreds of tourists pass there, they have a menu for Celiac people.

My haddock smelled of ammonia, i.e. it was off.

I have been here multiple times, and food has never disappointed me. My friend had fish and chips and mushy peas… which was so fresh and amazing. I had the grilled breem and veggies. The breem did not taste very fresh unfortunately, hence the 4 stars. The creme brulee was to die for ☺️

It was previously good but standards have dropped tremendously over the years. Now it is more of a tourist trap.

If you don't have time, you can use a stand, but there is also a classic restaurant, which we chose for lunch. Satisfaction for us, maybe they don't have beer on tap. I really liked the food (Monkfish special with samphire). The staff was nice to us. I recommend booking

The food was brilliant but I wasnt quite dressed for a nice restaurant, probably why i wasnt treated with enough courtesy. It was a bit quiet in there and customer service a little slow.

Small street food stall that does delicious fish and chips, a really filling dish, it costs around £15 or £16, I don't remember exactly but you are fully satisfied, the quality of the fiction and chips is very good. I recommend this place if you want to leave with a full belly and be satisfied..

If you go late, it will be sold out. You can eat fish and chips that are fried right away, and out of the three fish and chips I had in London, it was the best in terms of fish taste. In particular, you have to add the tartar separately, but maybe because you make it yourself, it's really good. It's delicious. It's inconvenient to have to eat on the street.

Well-cooked, tasty food in an airy environment between Borough Market and Southwark Cathedral. A good balance between tradition and modernity. Attentive, professional service.

I go to this place for fish and chips. The fish seems to get soggy when I put vinegar on them. F&C is just all right. I’ve had better F&C outside of the UK… sorry to say.

There is a restaurant with the same name next to the takeout shop. They did what they wanted, but they told me that I couldn't speak English and that my pronunciation and words were wrong. Haha. When I asked for Coke Zero, they said Diet Coke. Oh my. The food was really fresh, well-organized, and delicious. I recommend only those who speak English well or are white to go 😀 The servers hate people of other races and people who don't speak English!

Loved it ! Perfect fish and chips, light and not greasy, served with an amazing and almost perfect tartar sauce. A Must try !!

Good fish fast at the Fish stand. Wonderfully sized portions, toppings, tartar. A little awkward to eat if the full restaurant has not yet opened.

£15 for fish, chips and a bit of tartar sauce! Everything tasted good but half of my rock fish had big bones so basically I paid £15 for a bit of fish and fries with sauce 😭

September 2024: Stopped by for lunch and tried the sea bass fish and chips from the takeaway stand. Fish tasted fresh and delicious. Put a little malted vinegar and it was perfect. Chips were big and had a lot of texture. Would definitely come back again for more delicious fish and chips!

The best fish and chips in London! Haddock is the main one in the house, I make a point of waiting until it's time to eat breakfast. I recommend!

I visited at 11th sep. The woman staff wearing a cap service is horrible. we ordered same menu but charge is different. I have to check and ask after comparing our receipt. Does it make sense if you are in customer's shoes. also Her Complexion is very discomfortable

Busy place and I get it. Social media has hyped this place which is why I went. Listen, the fish is just okay. Coming from the southern US, I'm use to well seasoned cuisine and this wasn't it for me. Big portion size. I appreciate getting a big bang for my buck but toss some salt and pepper in that fish batter. Had the cod by the way. They have a few different types of fish to choose from (sea bass for example).

Wow, it was my first fish and chips since I came to the UK and it was so delicious haha ​​I don't know what kind of fish it was but today's dish?? It was about 12 pounds. It would be a good idea to bring a lot of ketchup for the potatoes. Potatoes are also delicious... I want to have one more bottle

I went to the fish&chips takeaway. Chips were OK, but fish really didn't taste great. Batter is excessively oily, and the fish below average. Portions are large, like the price.

There are so many fish n chip restaurants in London, we were so lucky having chosen this one to try out the famous must try fish n chip. One word: perfect. Crispy, super light dough, fresh fish ( we chose cod fish), fresh potato chips and sauce. Calamari was great either. The coating was thing the squid thin sliced, pairing with arugula, add some lemon juice. The seafood salad was a big portion of seafood from scallops, shrimps to fish and clams, more seafood than salad :) Highly recommend this place. Oh we ate at off peak, that’s why it was no waiting line at the restaurant. The take-away shop next to the restaurant is always crowded.

This is the first fish and chips I had in London and the flavor is good. The fish is fried well.

Tasty food. We ordered the traditional Fish and chips. Price £24 per dish. Very tasty, good fries. Tuna Niçoise - it's a salad Niçoise with tuna steak on it. Also very tasty.

Georgia was fabulous , attentive , friendly and helpful. The crab starter was delicious and the scallops and black pudding were extremely tasty . Good quality ingredients with exceptional staff everyone was polite helpful and friendly . Highly recommend .

No place to sit. Out of cod shortly after lunch. Haddock had a bunch of scales on it. Only tasted ok.

We both ordered the cod. It was undercooked and something was off. Our waitress , Hayri [that was the name on the receipt] , she was very nice, attentive. She spoke to her mgr and they comped one of the meals. After that , she was no where to be found! A tall, thin, rude 'boy' ended up giving us our check. He had ZERO customer service skills , must be related to someone there because I can't see how he was hired. Bottom line ,not recommended.

They will lie to you and tell you there’s no COD fish but there is. I called them out for it and they gave it to me. The food was terrible, zero flavor, run away.

Trendy and expensive restaurant. But the food failed to leave an impression. Grilled cod was tasteless and could've been put together much better in terms of ingredients. Just flavourless and with no personality.

Haddock was a bit tasteless and chips poor for a Fish restaurant. Expected much better. Very quiet when we visited even though it was 2pm and sunny day. Not good value at all. Don't like that 13 1/2% service charge is automatically added to bill just for bringing our meals from kitchen. Won't recommend to friends and doubt we will return even though we visit the market each month.

super good fish and chips, they have both indoor and outdoor options. although it’s much more expensive, indoor gave a a better experience being quick with great service

The steak and potatoes are good if I recommend buying it. You're going to spend about 15 pounds but it's worth it. What is not worth it is that there is no place to eat there, it is always super crowded and sometimes the people who use ketchup and spices leave a mess on the tables that can look bad.

The queue is long but it gets through quite quickly. When our turn came some things were no longer available but what was there was still good, we liked it. The situation is certainly very chaotic as in the whole market and finding a place to lean even while standing at the only common table behind the stand can be problematic but with a little patience you can do everything.

Paid for tartare, was given mayo.

The fish is soft but not seasoned at all. I went with that in mind, but it was still so-so... Of course, there are no seats, so you have to eat it from the side. I recommend it if you only want to see the fried fish. I ordered Daegu. You have to order the sauce, otherwise you won't be able to eat the fries, they're not tasty.

This was such a fun place to eat! The cod fish and chips was some of the best we've ever had and the line went by very quickly. The cod was huge, crispy, and yummy!

The breading is boring and most of it isn't even crispy. Only the ketchup had any taste! ☹️☹️☹️

A huge disappointment. ! We had good memories of the place... apparently the glory has passed... we sat in a restaurant that had zero occupancy... the fish and chips were mediocre or below... the fish was bland, the chips were cold and mostly leftovers and crumbs from the bottom of the tray... the grilled halibut was spoiled And it smells stinky!!!, although the dish was replaced with another fish, but that shouldn't happen, and what's more, they justified us regarding the spoiled fish... (not to mention the poisoning we suffered from...) The service was alienated, sleepy and bored. They put the tip into the account in advance... - Disappointment, and a shame. (The entire market area is in a shabby, neglected and smelly state)

Very expensive for what they offer.

To begin by saying that only businesses with a recognized reputation can be established in Borough Market is to say that quality is assumed, we ordered fish and chips, in this case he stated that the fish is fresh, cooked to perfection, very juicy and the batter well executed. It comes with plenty of potatoes. You can put ketchup on the potatoes. We ordered the cod fish and chips... But I wasn't thrilled with the dish at all. The dish costs 15.95 pounds and I leave you a photo so you can see the presentation.

Not the best of experiences. Service is as muddled. Staff didn’t seem aware of what was included with main course Sole. Was informed chips so went for spinach as a side. Was then told cannot do chips with Sole only new potatoes. Fine. Fish came out with very watery spinach and no potatoes I’d any sort. Was informed I had swapped the potatoes for spinach. News to me. Rectified with barely warm new potatoes. There followed a long wait for some hot ones whilst the fish was eaten to save it going cold. Had to point out that a meal isn’t just the fish it’s the combination of flavours on the fork. Some money taken off the final bill which was appreciated. But I would say a bit more flair needed with the food.

For 15 pounds i got a small portion of completely unsalted chips aswell as the small piece of fried haddock, plus there weren't any sauces available. First and last time

Nothing here had any flavour, the tomatoes on my salsa looked way past their best and the fish was very bland. Avoid this place. We had a whitebait starter, zero flavour. Soft shell crab burger, fine but incredibly mid. Swordfish, meh. Not worth the money at all

They were sold out of everything except cod and fries. No other fish. No other sides. The fish was decent, but nothing above and beyond other fish places.

I want to preface that I am American and grew up in the pacific northwest where you'd be hard pressed to find bad fish and chips. I got the cod, and these were the worst fish and chips I've ever had. The crust fell off of the fish because the skin wouldn't break, there was no salt on the fish or the chips (I know you're supposed to do malt vinegar or lemon in the UK but ), the chips had 0 crisp and were dense, it was just so bad. Besides not having salt, the flavor was decent, and the tartar sauce (which you have to pay extra for) made up for a lot, the suace was quite nice. Apart from the food, I got service from the stand at Borough Market around the corner from the restaurant, and it was so quick which was really nice. Even then, it didn't make it worth it for over $20.

Some of the best seafood we've ever had. We had the chargrilled squid, Sea Bream, Fish and Chips and Fish Pie. All of it was spot on. The host Georgianna and the waiter Ehan were both great at their jobs. We don't usually leave reviews but felt the need to with this one. All the fish is from Borough Market as well. Can't get any fresher than that. Will definitely be coming back!

Food was actually flavorless to say the least, service was terrible; got order wrong 3 times and the lady at the checkout stand did not speak English very well, couldn't understand me quite well, finally got my order right; it was just "fish n chips" I got nothing at first, then I got chips by themselves, then I got fish by itself then finally the 2 items available in the Menu came into my hands, then disappointed. Nevertheless it is worth to try and check for yourself, dont just listen to these reviews, its just people ranting such as myself.

Fish soup was tasteless. £32 for a small fillet of sea bass, some potatoes and tomatoes was not value for money. Salmon salad was also less than generous. Deserts were good.

Delicious food and amazing service

Great lunch with excellent service, especially the female, blond waitress looking after our party of 7. Portions a little on the small side but good quality and great table w view over market. Will definitely return!

I always end up eating here in slight disappointment because I've misjudged my Borough Market timing and places I actually want to go are closed. It's hard to argue with their chips though — they are always hot, fresh and cooked to perfection. My main frustration is that as a 'chips and curry' person, their curry is, frankly, weird. I get that they're trying to be a bit quirky and unconventional, but the curry sauce they serve with their chips is too watery, a bit acidic, and just overall not quite the right flavour. It's not bad, just... disappointing. I'm not normally a traditionalist when it comes to food, but maybe I actually AM when it comes to curry for chips! Still worth a visit if you're hungry and in the area, though would never be my first choice as there are so many other incredible places to eat in Borough.
