We booked in for 3 nights from a Monday to a Wednesday on a bed and breakfast basis. We were aware that there would be no evening restaurant service for the first two nights. The location and grounds are beautiful and the front line staff were very pleasant and welcoming. Unfortunately the bed in our room was very uncomfortable - for a lightweight person the mattress was extremely hard with no give in it at all. As a result I had no sleep on the first night and was in a lot of pain by the morning, so much so that we reluctantly decided to end our stay. In accordance with the terms and conditions we were liable for the full cost, which we understood, and we paid without any fuss. However, as there seemed to be no other guests in residence at the time it was clear that our late cancellation had no impact on the ability to re- sell the accommodation to someone else, and I believe that meeting us half way with the costs would have been reasonable in the interests of good customer relations. We were offered another room but obviously the mattress was likely to be the same. I know everyone has different needs and there have been some very favourable reviews but I can only tell of my own experience. Our breakfast was well served and prepared but the choice was limited for a hotel of this standard - there did not seem to be any pastries/croissants on the menu.

Stayed at the hotel attached on a package with two dinners included. This allowed us to try 2/3 of the menu (pescatarian options). Really great chefs at work here. Obviously aiming for the top and will get there, I’m sure. Some excellent seafood cookery on show - salmon first course, scallop second, and cod main. All of the highest quality. The hot souffle dessert was especially memorable though. A fluffy cloud of deliciousness. Well worth a weekend away. Beautiful location in The Peaks.

Stunning lunch Saturday afternoon, we had been recommended about a year ago and made it fit as part of a foodie trip celebrating our anniversary. The weather was beautiful, they welcomed us to sit on the terrace and enjoy a drink before lunch which was a lovely treat. Great to see all their glassware is Riedel. The dining room is absolutely beautiful, I really do like to see a table cloth so this was also nice. The lunch is a lovely menu selection of small plates. We ordered 9 plates between us to enjoy most of the menu and the food was exquisite and beautifully presented We enjoyed a bottle of Gewurtztraminer which paired nicely with every dish finished with the cheese course between us and a 20 year tawny port. A beautiful lunch, paced very well and they were happy for us to stay in the dining room as long as we wanted. Michael the main host was really lovely and took time to share conversation with us which we enjoyed. We finished off with a walk of the gardens, it reminded us of Le Manoir which we were lucky to visit earlier in the week. We’d love to come back for an evening visit when we are next in the area. Thank you.

We have been to Fischer’s many times and had wonderful food and service. We booked on August 3rd for our anniversary. We chose an early time as my husband had an early flight the next day. We arrived for 7pm and had a drink in the garden and then were left there until finally we were taken into the smaller dining room. The food was excellent as always but what makes Fischers special is the service. This time we had so long between courses that even our waiter apologised twice to us. We finished our dessert at 10pm and a waiter appeared surprised that we had no time for coffee and petits fours! The table next to us were loud and at points swore loudly, they even accepted a speaker call at the table. These things all added to a less than amazing anniversary meal. A disappointing occasion.

Disappointing Lunch August 2024 This is the second time we have dined at Fischer's at Baslow Hall. The first time was a few months ago for lunch that left a wonderful impression. We then decided to book again for Sunday Lunch with our friends as it was a joint birthday celebration. We live about 2 hours away but we believed the drive was worth it. The staff both inside and outside the restaurant were wonderful and very professional. However whilst we had a very enjoyable day, we all agreed the food was not what we expected. We all ordered various courses, the first and second courses were disappointing, We ordered the cod fish course which was very small and basically an ordinary fish ball in bread crumbs. The single scallop had very little flavour, both did not reach our expectations. We had different main courses but three of us has lamb which was nice but nothing special. We expected something exceptional for our lunch at Fischer's it wasn't. Sorry but we wanted to express or feelings. Read less Written 12 August 2024

We’ve eaten at Fischers many times but we were so disappointed this time. It seemed like a totally different experience - no amuse bouche while you had a drink in the bar area beforehand unless you paid for them, no special little pre starters when you went to the table, no special lunch options, extortionate prices (£44 for the only fish option!), tiny portions, rip-off prices for the sides. I could go on and on but would rather ask, why? What’s happened? Where have all the lovely, charming staff gone? We all know that prices have gone up and understand the pressures but this felt like taking the …. And apparently there’s also a tapas menu but, again, why? This isn’t Fischers and if that’s their new way forward then the fact that the place was practically empty should be a warning. Please, Fischers, stop trying to be “trendy” and go back to what you’re best at.

Such a wonderful meal and experience. From the moment we arrived the service was attentive without being over bearing. The building is beautiful outside and the decor in the dining room fresh and bright whilst the pre and post dinner drinks lounge was cosy with a lovely open fire to add to the ambience. The wine list was extensive and had a great selection including the well known favorites and some amazing lesser known, but amazing wines from Hungary and Slovenia. My advice is venture outside your comfort zone, it’s not often you find a restaurant that has such a beautifully curated wine list which goes beyond the favorites. The food was in another league, really special. Make sure you have the wasabi ice cream sandwich between the third and fourth courses! Other personal highlights were the dippy egg, beef and the baked alaska. The knowledge of the waiting staff on both the food and wine was awesome! Can honestly say this was one of the best meals ever!

Was given the interesting menu and had a detailed discussion about the evening's food. Drinks and chef's amuse-bouche was brought the table. Attentitive staff then showed us to our dining table. Each course was superb with ample time between each one. Otto and staff were very knowledgeable about the tasting menu and wine. Coffee and petit fours were taken back in the comfortable lounge. What a wonderful stay and tasting menu experience! We were celebrating a birthday and opted for the Chef’s Bench tasting menu, which puts you right at the heart of the very busy but very well run kitchen. Brilliant service and advice from Otto who helped us choose wine that perfectly matched the wide variety of flavours. Adam introduced us to his team who were all super friendly, and then delivered an incredible tasting menu. We’d eaten at The Black Swan at Oldstead the night before, which my wife preferred but for me Baslow Hall was better!! The sea bass and the carrot dishes were my favourite - the joy of a tasting menu is being able to try a wide range of flavours. Wonderful - we’ll be back!

The food was absolutely superb and the chance to try out before any other guests the carrot dish was unbelievable. I fact an honour as the dis is amazing and deserves it place on the menu. Fabulous stay with an incredible dining experience at The Kitchen Bench. It was a real privilege to watch and converse with talented Head Chef, Adam Thackeray and his exceptional team as they produce innovative, seasonally inspired dishes with flavour combinations that defied our expectations and lit up our palettes. Wonderful to see a kitchen on full chat, too. The fast paced choreography with hot pans was almost balletic, the attention to detail at plating, mesmerising, and the communication between the team as they juggle & balance their workloads was faultless, though you can expect some fairly fruity language at times! Treat yourselves, book The Kitchen Bench and turn left for the kitchen, rather than right for the dining room. We've been lucky enough to dine at many Michelin starred restaurants, and I would say that this experience tops the lot! Thank you Adam, John, Phil, Dave, Alice & Raj and all the staff at Fischer's Baslow Hall for your commitment & enthusiasm in making our 2 night stay so memorable. Fabulous place, fabulous people. We visited with another couple for lunch - it’s a beautiful venue and we were met at the door and shown into the small bar area - the weather was mixed so we couldn’t make use of the terrace but the bar area whilst small was very comfy and they had the fire on too which I always like regardless of what month it is - if the weather is cloudy and a bit rainy then it’s lovely to have the atmosphere and sound of an open fire. The amuse bouche were beautiful and my nasturtium margarita was one of the best I’ve had. The two drivers had a highball apple and elderflower spritz which was lovely. Our food was delightful, we had bream and lamb to start and duck, pork and peppers for mains. I was disappointed with my pepper main, whilst very tasty it was just a bit underwhelming and didn’t really match up to the other meat main courses. The palate cleaner of horseradish ice cream was not for me as I don’t like horseradish but the rest of the party enjoyed it. We all had deserts, blackberry and lemon meringue for the girls which was lovely and the boys had apricot and croissant bread and butter pudding which was super gorgeous. We were recommended a bottle of white Toscana as some of our party couldn’t drink red and it was very nice. We finished off in the bar with coffees and petite fours which didn’t disappoint - my only suggestion would be please put a latte in a latte glass. It was a treat and we knew how much it would cost and we were happy to pay it as we had received fabulous food, great service but not in your face and beautiful but relaxed surroundings.

My wife & I had eaten at Fischers before Covid, and it was a real treat. We returned for lunch for a special occasion, but didn't find it as satisfying as we were expecting. We eat regularly in good quality restaurants, but only occasionally in a minimalist 'fine dining' establishment, so you must read this review knowing this. Fischers at Baslow Hall is a beautiful place, with lovely gardens, but I would say that the restaurant is a little short of atmosphere. Our starters were a world of art... small, but very tasty, with a slice of delicious bread, cut in half. Overall, our main courses were disappointing. My confit duck was tasty, but very rich (a rich sauce, and minted oil) and came with a couple of small sprigs of stem broccoli. The Maitre D had made a big thing of the garden produce, so I was perhaps expecting a side of fresh vegetables, and the duck was so rich it was crying out for something on the plate to balance it... maybe a spoon of mash? There were no sides offered on the menu, so I assumed it would come as a complete dish, rather than just a duck leg. Similarly, my wife's cod was delicious. It was small, but beautifully cooked, but again came with nothing else on the plate. My wife also expected a small portion of the Maitre D's acclaimed vegetables, and the mild curry sauce was crying out for something to balance the dish.. maybe a small portion of rice? We chose not to have the desserts, but opted only for the small palate- cleanser, which was a delicious and very refreshing teaspoon-size combination of lavours... ideal for cutting through the richness of the main course. We assumed this was complementary, but were charged £5 each, even though there was no charge noted on the menu. We had a pretty average £40 bottle of white wine, which cost £5 in service charge to be brought to the table and poured (and it wasn't even opened in front of us). For a 2 course lunch, with wine and service charge we thought £145 rather excessive. For an apperetif, 3 courses, plus cheese it would have been well over £200. We did however appreciate the skill in the preparation of the dishes, and the service was good, with knowledgeable explanations of the dishes. It was an "event' rather a complete meal. After eating a good lunch, we would normally eat very little supper, maybe a piece of cheese, but on this occasion a Chinese takeaway was purchased on the way home. In conclusion, the venue was lovely, and the food was delicious, but it wasn't overall a satisfactory experience for us.

What a difficult review to write. There was so much about the celebratory dinner for seven that was marvellous; the venue is beautiful, the staff attentive and the cuisine exceptional; yet the failure to cater for the vegetarian in our group despite prior communication with the restaurant was deeply disappointing. Serving the planned dishes but without the meat or fish enjoyed by the non-vegetarian diners is not what I expect when paying over £100 per person before drinks are added.

Lunch Imaginative modern British food. Baslow Hall is a beautiful, 100 year old Grade II listed manor house located in the heart of the peak district Derbyshire. We have not been here for some time. As it was a lovely day, we decided to have a trip out and managed to get a last-minute reservation. What prompted us to go was last summer, we noted they had appointed a new head chef. Adam is a chef with pedigree. Having worked at Gleneagles, John's House and Sat Bains. So we knew that we would be in for something special. As soon as the snacks arrived, you could tell we were onto a winner. Tapioca /Onion/Parmesan 'Gazpacho' Bread & Butter First. Shoulder of Derbyshire Lamb, Anchovy, Leek. Hand Dived XL Orkney Scallop, Carrot, Dukkah. Max's Potatoes, Smoked Eel, Lovage. Second. Derbyshire Beef, Horseradish, Celeriac. North Atlantic Cod, Fennel, Turnip, Curry. Pre dessert-Coconut & Spiced Lime. Third. 70% Chocolate Marquise, Kalamansi, Coffee. Roasted English Apricots, Croissant, Crème Fraiche. Everything was outstanding, from the presentation to the quality seasonal ingredients and amazing flavours. Adam and his team served up the finest of dishes. Service was friendly and very professional. We shall have to return, and maybe try their kitchen bench. As we love to watch the team in action. Might even stay as they have eleven luxurious bedrooms.

What a great Lunch. Four of us ate at Fischer's on Sat 5th August. After eating an amazing evening meal at the Prince of Wales the previous evening we were wondering whether Fishers might be a bit of a let down. Fortunately it wasn't!! Amazing Sea Bream starter, much flavour in the fish. Beef cheeks and Sirloin were fantastic. Amuse bouch, pallete cleaning ice cream. Cheeseboard to finish. Not a 23 course tasting menu but an enhanced 3 course lunch with 3/4 choices of starter main and desert. Service was confident, intrusive but attentive. All waiting staff answered our questions and offered advice. A short and approachable wine list with some good choices by the glass. Will be back. All in all our expectations were exceeded.

My husband and I had dinner at Fischer's to celebrate our wedding anniversary and it was an absolutely wonderful experience. The tasting menu was delicious, with each course introducing us to totally different flavours that were put together beautifully. The accompanying wine flight actually took our breath away, as the wines didn't just complement the dishes but actually added new layers of flavour and made us experience the food in a different light. I don't want to spoil the experience for readers by giving away too much detail about each course, but the mushroom dish, served with a tawny port, was a particular highlight. The wine selection was an eclectic mix and showed the knowledge and passion of the sommelier, and we loved that he took the time to explain each pairing to us in such detail. Indeed, all of the staff were absolutely brilliant - so professional but genuinely friendly and interested in how we found each course and what our favourites were.Yes, it is expensive and the portions do seem small at first, but it was a truly memorable evening and by the end of the meal we felt very comfortably full so in retrospect the portion sizes were judged perfectly. The 10pm curfew and the early arrival of our taxi driver meant that we were a little rushed towards the end, but that was not at all the restaurant's fault as we had been taking our time savouring all of the courses before - and they very kindly popped our petits fours in a bag for us to take with us so that we didn't miss our taxi. Fischer's was absolutely one of our favourite restaurant experiences in a long time and we must definitely come back again - perhaps next time to stay at the hotel as well, so that we don't have to rush off after dinner!

Our recent overnight stay with the tasting menu was excellent from beginning to end.We were staying in one of the Garden Rooms - which was beautifully decorated, quite large, and very clean. The bed was very comfortable with high-quality bed linen and I loved the wall-paper choice. The COVID-19 measures in place - hand sanitisers, social distancing, minimal guest interaction were all very reassuring. The 8-course tasting menu with wine pairings was amazing. Each course wasn't too large but was incredibly flavourful and the extra space around the table made us feel very secure. Similarly breakfast was at-seat service and in a beautiful room. All in all a great stay and we will be back.

And so to dine at Fischer's in this stylish Edwardian house with attractive, well kept gardens. For past decades, this restaurant, overseen by its founder Max, and his protege Rupert Rowley, was held in highest esteem, but when Rupert decided to move on, a little of the twinkle seemed to go out of the place. However, last night we were in for a stratospheric treat of a meal in the shape of the new seasonal tasting menu and its vegetarian version. Both of these were devised by their new supernova of a chef - the tremendously creative, Nathan Wall and his talented brigade. Wow!! Three inspired gems of 'amuse bouches' starting with an unbelievably umami sensation in the shape of a small cube of 'bread and butter pudding with cep mushroom' , followed by a succession of perfectly proportioned and presented dishes extolling the flavours of cauliflower, local mushrooms, venison, langoustine and Hogget (or almost identical looking vegetarian alternatives). To follow, an exquisitely palette tickling series of desserts and savouries finishing with a tiny, sweet, yet cep flavoured, doughnut were creatively out of this world, and cheese lovers were wooed with a mouthwatering British cheese selection of the very best. For us, the wine flight consisted of a perfectly chosen and balanced array of unusual wines from lesser known wine growing areas was an added delight. The young staff under supervision of their skilful, long standing restaurant manager were warm, knowlegeable and highly professional. To summarise, Fischer's is better than ever! Nathan Wall and the staff have put in the 'Per Ardua' ........now, come on Michelin, it is definitely time to re-add the Astra!!

The Downton-esque setting sets the scene for an unforgettable dining experience throughout. Starting from the incredibly polite and knowledgeable staff, who will guide you through the meal, and are prepared to answer any question you might have, continuing on to the flavours of the beautifully executed dishes, finishing with tea in the most serene garden of the Hall. Outstanding in our meal: the pigeon, and the canapes. Most favorite aspect: some ingredients are sources from their very garden.

We recently entertained friends and as a special lunch treat, we took them to Fishers. We have been many times over the years and this visit was no different to any other, except for the one-way system in operation. The menu was a little limited as they were participating in the government’s ‘eat out to help out’ and only the classic menu was on offer on the day we were there. In advance we had asked for a minor change and requested Halibut rather than Monkfish. They not only fulfilled our request but the menus on the table reflected the change for one of our friends – a very nice touch. The service was attentive and paced at a leisurely speed. The food was all delicious and each dish explained. Only one very minor comment but one easily solved. To exist the building, you leave via the lounge and front door. There are two short flights of stone steps and this proved very difficult for one of our disabled friends. As no one was in the entrance passageway perhaps in future the staff may be able to ensure guests can leave by that route if they are disabled.

If you want gourmet dining this is the place to go. All courses are beautifully presented and as each is served you are given a description of the contents, how it was cooked and the opportunity to have any questions answered. We had a private room for a Birthday Celebration Lunch and enjoyed the whole experience. After lunch we very much enjoyed walking around the delightful grounds. Special care was taken with regard to social distancing. The whole ambience of Baslow Hall is lovely, however it does come with a very high cost, something we would only be able to afford for a very special occasion.

We visited Fischer’s during our weekend trip to the Peak District. We were very impressed with both the quality and presentation of the food, as well as the service. We had the three course tasting menu - the lamb and pigeon to start, duck for main and apple / elderflower for desert. They also brought fresh sourdough bread and butter as well as three different canapés. Overall excellent. I would highly recommend.

First visit to Fischer’s and really enjoyed the stay and the food. Difficult one to rate as high quality food here should be a given......and it was exquisite. The two most enjoyable parts of the meals we had there were the breakfast and the cheese course (big shout out to the waitress who designed the cheese course and spent time describing it to us). I think I’d like to have come away saying the cheese course and breakfast were great, but the stars of the show were the starter and main course.......and that’s probably why this is only a 4. I’d certainly go again.

We had a fabulous night here. I was a bit nervous about how careful they would be at following Covid guidelines because we haven't been anywhere since March but it was absolutely fine. At no point did we feel that we needed to move away from staff. They were all friendly and professional. One way systems and hand sanitising stations were pointed out. Check in was in the room. The room was lovely and located in the main hall. Soaps and shampoos were good quality. The only (and very minor) criticism we had was the quilt was very thick for a summer night. We had drinks on the terrace in the afternoon and this is a lovely setting, overlooking their large grounds. We booked for the evening meal too and this was fabulous. The appetisers were great too. I was impressed that catering for all my food allergies and intolerances was not an issue at all. The gluten free bread roll was good. It wasn't a cheap place for dinner bed and breakfast but was one to certainly consider for a special ocassion. We will be returning.

My first meal out since lockdown. Fischer’s grounds were beautifully prepared and dining nicely spaced out for a Covid safe meal. The food was very nice, better than my last meal here about 9 months ago. Beef and mushrooms and chocolate excellent. One salmon was undercooked and the monkfish under seasoned. Service was charming. Special thanks to the young ‘cheese specialist’ server, she was great! As to Covid. We felt quite a few improvements could be made. Some positive suggestions:Servers should wear face visors.Service needs to be less attentive - no need to continually pour wine or water, no need to pour sauces on diners meals. Some signage, notable on ‘exit’ and ‘toilet use’ policy would be useful. Toilet doors could be wedged open to avoid touching metal door handles.

I was given a gift voucher by my husband for Christmas at this luxurious place.Driving up to Fischer's on a dark evening is quite magical to see.Upon entering, myself and my husband were greeted by a friendly member of staff who took through to the library bar and took our coats. We both ordered a glass of wine each and with that we were given our first appetiser, which was absolutely delicious. After a good 15 minutes, myself and my husband were then taken to the dining table where we ordered from the dinner menu. As each dish came out it was explained in detail and tasted simply divine!! Unfortunately, we didn't have enough room for dessert. After our meal, we went back to the library bar and ordered a peche royale which was sweet and refreshing, just how I like it!!I would like to take the time to say to all of the staff here at Fischer's how very welcoming, friendly and attentive you all were and are most certainly a credit to this incredible place. I would love to come back here again in the future.

Whilst I cannot fault the quality of the food, the lack of toilet facilities causes me a major problem. Previously when we have visited here we were able to use the toilets belonging to the pub next door. Having mobility problems and on medication , I politely asked if it would be possible to use the staff WC. This was refused and I was told to use the public toilets which were a considerable distance away. It took me a very painful 25 minute walk to go there and back.I am 85 years old, leaning heavily on a walking stick . I feel very disappointed as i have visited this fish shop many times in the past.

Arrived around 10:45 am on 10/11/24 only to be informed that there was no hot food being served until 11:15 due to a take away order. Others in front of us left and we reluctantly ordered two coffees, a flapjack and a Pork Pie instead of the full cooked breakfasts we’d hoped for. We were charged twice for the Pork Pie, which we pointed out and were subsequently refunded for. We sat at a table that had the previous occupants breakfast plate on it (which was never cleared, considering the waiting on staff weren’t serving any food at the time) and waited for our coffee which did not arrive. We fetched it ourselves from the counter, at which point around 11:05, they started taking breakfast orders again. The place seemed poorly managed and why you’d turn away valued customers for a take away order is beyond me.
