Fins Restaurant in North Ayrshire

Hadn’t been for a few years. Really delicious lunch. My friend started with tempura, lovely, had the seafood platter which was beautifully presented and delicious. I had scallops to start and a brunchy sort of smoked haddock dish with a poached egg on top . I would say on our experience the food is better than ever and the place is a must. Both the chef and Tom the owner came and chatted to us. I got scallops in the shop for tonight’s dinner. I’ll go back to Finn’s every month at least, hopefully more often! It’s a treasure. Oh, there’s no table licence but they have a selection of wine in the shop, drop in there first!

Family lunch. Service and quality were both excellent. Would highly recommend a visit. For me the smoked haddock with poached egg was a highlight. However every plate was a success. Thank you.

Before I go any further I want to say that the food at Fins was lovely and we both enjoyed our Trio of Fish main course, my wife had scallops to start and i had smoked salmon and we have absolutely no complaints about the quality of the food. HOWEVER! (PS, we are not in the habit of complaining at restaurants nor of leaving negative reviews) My wife had booked in advance using an on-line booking system. The day before our meal she received an automated message telling her that our booking had been cancelled. She phoned and left a message which led to two phonecalls, two different people. Apparently there are two on-line booking systems and somehow our booking had been duplicated so one had been cancelled! In the other phone call a gentleman explained that they had a group booking for 7 p.m. and asked if we could manage 6:30. Happy to oblige, my wife said we'd arrive for 6:30 or earlier if we could manage it. BUT when we arrived at 6:25 the girl who dealt with us told us we were early, our booking was for 7 p.m. and we'd have to wait. My wife explained about the call the previous day but, with a defiant kind of apology, we were told there was a group in and we'd just have to wait. We thought we were doing the restaurant a favour coming early but were then sat at a table and ignored for half an hour, no eye contact, no checking to see if we were alright or needed anything while we waited, no offer of drinks or even a bread basket! It really did feel like planned ignoring, we were clearly the naughty ones who dared to arrive before our allotted time! We were then served as if nothing had happened and enjoyed our food. Toward the end of the meal, my wife attracted the attention of a mail waiter and asked if perhaps, he had been one of the people who had phoned us the previous day. She wanted to clarify the sequence of events because we were still feeling distinctly unwelcome and misunderstood. He confirmed he had called but wasn't the person who'd asked us to arrive early. He was much more conciliatory, apologetic and offered various explanations which, i think he knew were unsatisfactory, but the best he could offer. The girl then came across, still somewhat truculent, telling us that she'd already apologised several times. I really don't think she understood that her attitude was what had tipped the balance and made an awkward situation much worse so we really hope she will read this and, instead of arguing, use it as a learning experience in customer service and, hopefully, handle future situations in a manner that helps her customers feel more valued and welcome than we did.

Have been to Fins for lunch a few times and are regular users of the amazing fish shop ( their own brown bread is to die for) so we thought we would try it for dinner and OMG what a great decision , we were first in and were greated by the happy waiting staff, great table in the corner (table 3) of the restaurant . There is no alcohol license but wine can be purchased in the shop, we had great bottle of Sauvignon Blanc for £1 8, would be twice that on a wine list. I went for the special — Pan Seared Scallops with roast asparagus and hollandaise sauce, cooked to absolute perfection, my wife had Tempura Langoustines in a beautiful light crispy batter with two dips and a fabulous side salad , finely chopped in a lovely light dressing. We both had the fish from the specials — Butter poached Halibut on savoy cabbage in creamy garlic sauce, Fondant Potatoes with mussels I cannot say how perfectly cooked this was . I might add I have been a chef for the last 50 and a Group Executive Chef for 25 years so I do know good food. This was one of the best meals out we have had for years and this will now be our go to restaurant. One , if not the best fish restaurant in Scotland. It is very reasonably priced as well for this quality of food, well done chef and waiting staff keep it up, Tom your staff are a credit to you .

Fantastic birthday celebration on Thursday (22nd Aug, 2024) at Fins. Thanks to Sean and his team for a really great evening. The menu prepared for us was fantastic and everyone enjoyed it. Some of my friends are seasoned travellers and love their food experiences. They all said the food we had at Fins was at top of their list. Planning for the night with Tom and Sean was so easy and they were very accommodating. If you are looking for somewhere to have a private dining experience or party or function you would do well to look them up and discuss your requirements

Staying at cottage next to Fins, we absolutely HAD to eat here. We had breakfast the 1st morning, but you need to book in advance, as not always available.. Returned at night for dinner. Seafood platter was amazing (although the langostine scared me a bit, lying on my plate staring up at me!) My husband had the halibut and mussels with Thai curry sauce, and my son had the fish and chips, both thouroughly enjoyed their meals. Finished it all off with Eton mess mmmmmmmmm. Staff great, warm and friendly. Thank you, we will see you again.

We had a delightful lunch here. The hot roast smoked salmon is so tasty. Sticky toffee pudding was brill ! My friends enjoyed the smoked trout pate so much that we bought a couple of packs from the shop. Nice relaxing ambience. Look forward to my next visit.

What a great find! Fresh fish & seafood cooked to perfection in lovely, friendly, casual surroundings. Staff were great, a few minutes by taxi from Largs and well worth the effort to get there. It felt like I was sitting in a friends kitchen, a great night! (BYOB)

Best seafood restaurant I’ve ever been to. Eat here at least once a week and always look forward to seeing the specials board. Food is outstanding and the service is 5 star. Have taken many friends here and they have all loved it. Well worth a visit.

After visiting the attached shop a few times recently, we decided to try the restaurant on a Friday evening and were not disappointed. The menu itself is not huge but it was a difficult decision in what to choose. There are quite a few specials on the board that made our decision even harder. I chose Cullen Skink and my wife had black pudding bon bons for starters and they were delicious. I had mixed grill of fish fillets and my wife had a ribeye steak, and again both dishes were cooked to perfection and very well presented. To round off we both chose profiteroles from the special board. It was a lovely evening in a small cosy restaurant and we will definitely make a return visit .

Best place to eat in or ant where near Fairlie, food is always excellent. They also have a shop with fresh sea catches of the day.

First time ever visiting Fins and iv'e got to say what a lovely experience. Food absolutely delicious, i had the carrot and orange soup of the day and the smoked haddock, the service was very efficient, great atmosphere all round. Would highly recommend 👌

Fresh ,top quality ,excellent best meal in town. Specials on offer and delicious oysters . Adam was very helpful and delivered great service. Just remember to take your own drink no alcohol license.

Go to Fencebay! The food and service is great! We had oysters, langoustine tempura, scallops and seafood linguine - everything was incredible. Even the bread and oil was out of this world, get the bread! There's no licence but you can buy wine from the farm shop which is reasonably priced with a great selection, honestly one of the best meals I've had. I'm already planning my next visit...

Saturday lunchtime visit, three adults. 1 portion mussels, 1 Fencebay Tapas to share. As we said to the staff, the only thing wrong with the meal was that it was such a long drive from Yorkshire to have it again. Thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Have been going here for nearly 20 years as an annual treat, this time it was probably our last. The dishes ranged from competent to laughably bad, the fish and chips in particular would have been sub standard even for a chip shop, with soggy batter on the fish and chips that were barely cooked. There were substitutions on other dishes that we were only told about on delivery. You would have thought a fish restaurant would make good tartar sauce. The sticky toffee pudding has always been legendary at Finns, this time, it tasted like it was bought in. Surprisingly poor service considering the staff almost outnumbered the diners. Couldn't even get the spelling right on the menu. We remember when Fins was a Michelin star contender, and a real selling point for the village of Fairlie, those days are sadly gone.

i love this place but went last night and was very disappointed i got the smokies which was very small and watery fish i had to try find my husband had battered fish which looked like a gold fish with about 8 chips service was not great think they forgot we were out front fel let down as love this place hoping it was just a one off

Friday lunch at Fins. This was the second time we’ve visited recently. The food was just amazing! The mussels, as a starter, were so tasty and a large portion. Our mains were very attractively presented and delicious. Our server, Adam, was so courteous, and looked after us perfectly. A lovely young man. The only negative, is that there is no door between the restaurant and the kitchen and the F word was flying around! We found it slightly funny, but it’s not professional and it’s definitely not good for business. However, I can’t wait to go back!

Took my Mum and Stepdad for Mum's 91st birthday lunch.....Mum visited restaurant previous to lunch to request share seafood platter for two have shells removed - restaurant happy to oblige....however, I was subsequently charged when paying the bill for 2 seafood platters! Ruined the birthday lunch vibe totally. I then received two phonecalls from Fins to refund one seafood platter due to miscommunication - nice resolve! But, one seafood platter to share is not enough for two people for a main.....my elderly parents had one platter each which was perfect....until the bill came. Food for thought,and be aware for the scare!.....when you order.....otherwise, lovely food :) Hxx

Really cannot recommend this place enough. Love seafood and often disappointed by the offerings and value at other "seafood" restaurants. Fins has everything you could want, great food, pleasant staff and great value for money.

Excellent sea food at reasonable prices. Although there is no alcohol served you can purchase wine at a reasonable price at their shop.

Lovely local restaurant serving excellent local fish and seafood. Good vegetarian options too, they don't have an alcohol license but you can buy wine etc at the little shop nextdoor which also sells fish, cheese, meat and sundries.Wonderful staff, small dining areas but nice atmosphere and reasonably priced. Visited the restaurant on the 21st of February 2020.Booked a table over the phone for 14.00 we arrived on time and the table was ready for our arrival. My partner and I had, as I have always come to expect, a lovely dinner at Fins a few weeks ago. As a guy who really appreciates good dining, having eaten at many fine restaurants in Britain and Europe, I have enjoyed eating at Fins a hundred times or more across its entire history and can honestly say, at that recent occasion and at all those previous occasions, it has never faltered in its efforts to present excellence in local produce, cooking, ambience and service.

I had totally forgotten about this wee gem! If you love fish this is the place to go to! Beautiful menu, not too large and had some lovely options for the non fish eaters and kids too. Everything was just cooked perfectly and the flavours didn’t overpower the fish. They don’t have a table licence however they do charge corkage if you want to bring your own bottles. Several tables had done this while we were there and the staff had provided the glasses and wine coolers etc. They also have a small shop in which they sell some lovely wines and beers etc. The staff are lovely, very knowledgeable and efficient as well as really friendly. All in all a fab wee run to the coast and we will be back!

This place worth a star! Amazingly cooked dishes. always fresh and delicious! Every time I pop in the shop I want to buy everything there! Been coming here ten years.. new chef has changed the shellfish platter sadly.. used to be full of garlic sauce and variety/freshest fish.. now has next to no sauce, tastes different and not fresh.. when complained to owner he denied it and blamed a fisherman instead.. paid £80 and both were very ill within the hour.. mega annoyed as this used to be my favourite place and has gone right down hill

We were staying next door for a mini break and decided to eat here. The staff made us feel very welcome, excellent food, so good we decided to eat there the following evening. Staff very friendly. Dog friendly as well. Wish is was a bit nearer home so could call again.

A Seafood Restaurant with an accompanying farm shop offering freshly caught local seafood. A note of warning, they may not always have want you want as it is reliant on local catches. We were hoping for Crab but none available when we visited. However, delightful service, great food and very reasonably price. No licence, so bring your own wine if required. Well worth the visit.

Second visit here, without a doubt one of the best restaurants we've been to in the u k the service is good, atmosphere great and the food second to none,the way the food is plated makes it look good before you try it, but the way it is cooked is what sells this restaurant, you will not be disappointed, just make sure you book or you will struggle to get a table it is that good it's always busy, if I had to have any complaints it would be the servings are too big!!

We went to Fins restaurant for lunch while on holiday as we were in search of some good seafood, and they did not disappoint. The menu was very varied and the waitress was fantastic, giving advice and guidance on my daughter's allergies and offering a good selection of options for her.

We went today to celebrate a friends 91st birthday,the staff could not have been any nicer putting up a banner and giving him a birthday card. Such a lovely touch !

Made a trip advisor account just to write this, I am originally from West Kilbride and now live in Glasgow. I have been going here for over ten years and it is my favourite place ever to eat (I eat out constantly).

We went to Fins for a wedding anniversary treat. The menu has lots to choose from but we went for the sea food and were not disappointed. My husband had the sea food platter main course with half lobster and said it was superb, some of the best seafood he has ever had.

If you love seafood then this is the place to try. We had the huge pot of seafood and it was super tasty. Really enjoyed everything and will return again in the near future. Lobster, prawns, mussels, just everything to do with the sea. Amazing.

Hello, I am the woman mentioned in FAJAEA’s review below. I’d like to start my review by apologising for any discomfort felt by other patrons of the restaurant as a result of last night’s ‘altercation’. It distresses me that anyone else would suffer from my actions, even the waiting staff – this could not be further from my intentions. That said, I had a really quite awful experience, and I feel it’s important to give my side of the story.

Had such a lovely night and at this restaurant, delicious food, lovely staff and friendly atmosphere. Although it was short lived due to another customer having a go at the waiting staff which I found appalling. Her behaviour was very disrespectful she complained about her starter then complained about her coffees being to small. The staff couldn't have been any nicer and did offer to make her family another round of coffees which she refused. Once the customer left the atmosphere did pick up again, but I do think it goes without saying that everyone who had to witness this womans actions felt very uncomfortable by it. Hopefully next time we come we won't have to see any of this nonsense. We will definitely be back

I’m sure the staff will know who I am before writing any more - they apologised profusely throughout and offered a free dessert or money off the bill, the whole experience was disgraceful! 1.5 hours we waited for a piece of smoked haddock and a lemon sole! Smoked haddock served with mashed potato, spinach and cheese - it didn’t mention that the mash would have black lumps throughout - I don’t know why they also served a small black dish (it was on everyone’s plate) containing carrots, a floret of broccoli, 2 boiled potatoes and was filled with water! I’ve never come across anyone who would have mashed potatoes and boiled potatoes on the same plate! Anyway, the haddock plate was absolutely roasting hot but the lemon sole plate was cold - I don’t know why!

45 minute wait between our starter and our main course. Wasn't worth the wait when it finally arrived. Some of it was inedible. The manager/owner pretty much accused us of lying when we complained. I honestly thought he was going to get violent. We paid up and left as quickly as possible.

Beautiful wee restaurant in the Scottish countryside, BYOB. Can't recommend the homemade smoked salmon pate, and homemade fresh bread enough! We had a fabulous hot seafood platter, brimming with fresh seafood and garlic butter, and the trout special was some of the best fish we've had recently! Never disappoints, great meal...

Stopped off for lunch with friends having visited Largs. A definite must if you are a seafood lover. Had oysters as a starter (although a little on the small side) they were delicious, then seafood linguine for main, packed with seafood and very rich in flavour.

Visited Fins twice for lunch over the last couple of months and on both visits the fish dishes were top class. Service was on both occasions very good. Staff very helpful and will offer advice is asked, we even had chef come out once to speak to us.

We went for lunch after a very wet walk with Archie in Kelburn. We had considered the Village Inn, also the Hydro, but decided the Catch as had not been for ages. What a great choice were the lunch menu fish cakes, also the bill for 3 just great value.

Booked in to Fins were seated at the time we booked in restaurant does not have a licence however you can bring your own or buy wine at the store next door. Had mussels for starter which we plump tasty as you would expect followed by a lobster and chips of the specials menu and who doesnt like a lobster! was cooked well juicy not dry and claws came pre cracked which is handy. My mother had fishcakes which were also tasty all in all a positive dining experience well priced too would defo recommend for a call in Lunch

Friday night inbetween Christmas and new year is always a hit or miss.

A definite if you are wanting that special night out or browsing as a tourist, Fins has for some years now been a great - and unique - restaurant. A credit to the area and to th ededication of the owner and staff.

Really good fish restaurant. We were in a bit of a hurray and the staff were very helpful in getting our orders to the table. Not cheap but the place was packed..The meal was excellent,
