Feeling Peckish in Newark and Sherwood

Was there for a wedding and we decided to have breakfast before the big day Wow what can I say service was good and the food excellent. Being a chef my self would definitely recommend

We've been here numerous times when in newark. This time we got a table straight away but the elderly waitress hadn't a clue who had entered or where they sat. There were 6 people (3 tanles)who came after we had sat down and each one was served before us. Every time we tried speaking to her she just ignored us. After 25 minutes we'd had enough of her ignorance and walked out. Never again.

Sausage: 2.0 – Standard issue banger, but cooked through evenly. And not too salty this time. Other Ingredients: 2.5 – Juicy plateful for sure. Too wet for some I should think but given the choice between wet or dry then give me plenty of liquid to mop up every time. Bacon wet-cured but cooked how I like, standard hash brown, two slices of slightly cool toast. The egg yolk was perfectly runny but I'm not a fan of the egg ring. Staff & Stuff: 4.0 – A friendly welcome and cheery servers makes a good first impression. Clean and tidy with lots of nooks and crannies or tables in the shop window if you want to watch the world go by. But the best thing from my visit was the lovely atmosphere. Everybody seemed to know everybody else, there were lots of “See you next week” kind of comments indicating a lot of regular customers. What a happy place Feeling Peckish is. VFM: 3.0 - £7.20 for the standard breakfast and £2.50 extra for a three-cup pot of tea. Not the best, not the worst, but try it for the lovely old-fashioned atmosphere.

Had breakfast here during my visit, they kindly reserved me a table on the Sunday morning as I had to catch my train back to Scotland and needed to be on time. Offers a good range of cooked breakfasts, the coffee is great and the staff very accommodating and friendly. They do get very busy but on the plus side they do have a downstairs loo. Bistro pavement seating is available and it's right opposite the castle.

Terrible cafe, staff rude and unaccomodating. Clearly only welcome if you are a regular, apart from that don't bother as you won't be welcome.

Excellent meal and lots of it. Never visit Newark without having at least one meal here. More if I can. Lovely friendly staff and proprietors.

What a surprise, some of the best coffee ever and on top of that a choice of 7 home made cakes. Will have to go back just to try the others. Food choices looked good with varying daily specials. Friendly staff and excellent service. Will be going back.

If you're feeling peckish do not go to this cafe absolutely awful, bland no taste and over priced for the poor quality of food. I will not be going there again!

All day breakfast available with a wide variety of menu items to suit all, also coffee and drinks available or sandwiches. Prices extremely reasonable, highly recommended and will be returning. Staff very attentive and welcoming.

Excellent service and the food is incredible home grown and home baked this little gem in Newark gets overlooked but it's literally opposite the castle and it's licensed too Fantastic value we had the two course lunch for £13.50!

Stopped off on way to Fakenham. Lovely dog friendly cafe. The cafe was busy but they made an effort to fit us in. Amazing service and food. Definitely recommend.

I'm currently sat in Feeling Peckish and I'm feeling peckish. Tuesday morning, wife and daughter by my side. Newsrk Castle looks over us from across the road. Impressive and just as impressive as the breakfasts we've just ordered. Hopefully... Two breakfasts arrive and a bacon cob. And very very nice they were too. Proper food in a real cafe atmosphere. Heartily recommended

We visited Newark for a couple of days and did the usual, consulted TA. We chose 'Feeling Peckish' and we chose well. A great breakfast, good portion size, reasonably priced and excellent service from the friendly staff. Highly recommended.

Feeling Pekish is a pleasant cafe located near to Newark castle serving a variety of drinks and light meals. A very good spot to stop for lunch. Service was quick and prices are reasonable.

Sat down with my wife and the manager approached to take our order. Upon my asking for a Veggie Breakfast - he responded "A Veggie Breakfast - PLEASE ...!" He then started admonishing me for referring to my phone. "But my parking payment has just been declined, I may get a ticket" I explained, to no avail, before he then refused to serve us. It was like a clip straight out of Fawlty Towers. "Try the Beaumond Cross Hotel" suggested the kind people on the next table, seeing our bemusement. We did and it was excellent. Gannets next door is also excellent but was closed. Maybe he was having a bad day but we are ordinary people who visit a lot of cafes and I have never seen anything like it, in Newark or anywhere else. At least I can report the golden age of comedy is not quite dead.

not been for a while,i had breakfast. meal was ok, bacon was not cooked enough for me, perhaps i should have asked for it to be well done. tea fine polite staff. place clean.

Called in here today for lunch with my husband, ordered our food soup for two it was Parsnip,it was brought to us,mine was barely warm and my husbands wasn't red hot either,so sent it back,it came out again after a few minutes,my husbands was steaming,mine wasn't ,I tasted it,it was hot round the edges and warm in the middle,I couldn't be bothered to send it back again so stirred it round and ate it as was ready for it after waiting,it must of taken me all of two minutes to eat with half a bagget,it was very watery and not very good at all,we paid our bill,wasn't asked how our food was,so I told the lady on the counter on the way out that mine was only warm and hot round the edges,she said it should of been probed and stirred,I told her it obviously wasn't,she said she would tell the kitchen staff,this food was not as good as it used to be and we were disappointed.

The food is always amazing here and has been for the best part of 30 years I’ve been coming here. My go to is the chicken, bacon and cheese melt. It does come with salad and coleslaw but I fancied the chips as an extra side today. Not the cheapest lunch at almost £11 but it’s hearty to say the least!!

Just a walk in, Late Sunday morning brunch from out of towners (Sheffield)… chosen due to trip advisor, top ten, didn’t look pretentious or over priced also was close and we needed a wee… restaurant was busy, ordered two breakfasts (big and mega) tea and coffee and juice. Food came really quickly and everything was cooked to perfection. Restaurant was clean as were the toilets. Brilliant thank you guys xxx

Myself (Hari), my husband Martin and a family friend Robert Smith went to have lunch at the cafe. They both had Liver and Onion dish (special of the day) accompanied with vegs and boiled potatoes. They are so delicious, the livers cooked perfectly to my liking. (Martin let me have few pieces of the livers). I had Egg Benedicts. They were okey. It would be nicer if they use a better quality of ham, also perhaps with small salads as garnish. We did enjoy our lunch and definitely be back.

We drove into Newark-on-Trent on a whim on a Sunday morning, and parked near Newark Castle. We had walked past this restaurant when we were walking towards the town centre, and noted it was well patronised by customers. We just had breakfast so we walked on. Before long, we were looking for lunch but unfortunately on Sundays, many of the establishments in Newark were closed and pubs were serving drinks but not food. We headed back to Feeling Peckish and took the table that a small group had vacated, and they shared that the food was good. We ordered a sirloin steak and eggs Benedict, and 2 hot chocolates. The food was indeed good in this homely cafe and we can see why it has a steady stream of customers. We also chatted with the owner and waitress, and realised that it has operated for 27 years. We wanted to try their cakes, which looked very delicious and made in house, but we were too full. But we will be back for that.

Easy to understand menu. Staff were very friendly however we were asked for our order after a couple that had arrived around 5 minutes after us and they then received their food around 15 minutes before us. Food was delicious with good portion sizes and fairly priced (also not greasy). Very helpful male staff member as we asked him for bbq sauce and he said there was none however he later returned with a small bowl of it as he had found some in the kitchen (great service). The only issue with the staff was that when we asked a question they didn’t get back to us e.g. asked if there was any jam but no one got back to us.

The food and service were sublime, very friendly, lovely food and even the dog was made to feel welcome. it was So good, we are taking the whole family (in-laws) today! Looking forward to the freshly home cooked food, but especially the cakes. The coffee and cherry was delicious 😋

Had family visiting Newark and we passed Feeling Peckish and dropped in for lunch. As soon as we walked in we were greeted with a friendly smile and directed to a table for our party size. Service and Food were excellent and very quick. I enjoyed a wonderful slice of quiche with chips and salad. Members of my family had paninis and were very impressed. The milkshakes were also a favourite. I will definitely be visiting again in the very near future. Excellent value for money and great location.

The horrible little man in this cafe spoke to us like something that came out of a dog's backside, I was trying my hardest to be polite to him, please and thank you, in the end I told what to do with his breakfast and walked out , wouldn't go back even if he apologized and offered a free breakfast ( HORRIBLE LITTLE MAN)

Visited this little gem of a cafe today before a hospital appointment. We were met by a very pleasant young lady who was very accommodating and made sure we had everything we needed, we were served delicious hot coffee and only 90p for a refill! Breakfast was fresh and hot, just what we wanted! Excellent quality food with a reasonable price tag and very friendly helpful staff, what more could you want. We will definitely be returning, we need to sample some of those delicious looking desserts!

This lovely little cafe/restaurant is a real treat to visit. The atmosphere is always warm and welcoming with friendly staff and owners. In fact they have so many regulars that it feels like visiting a social club and everyone chats together. Kevin the owner makes...

Our first visit to Newark and we came across this well run establishment. The welcome was warm and the service excellent. Coffee was nice and strong, and when the food arrived we had to find extra space. The breakfasts were huge, well cooked and nicely...

Called in twice during weekend in Newark. First for a snack at lunchtime then breakfast next morning. Very tasty food, excellent friendly service and good value. Nice friendly atmosphere inside.

Ate here on impulse, it was a busy Sunday lunch but they found us a table, we only had water and a baked potato, the prawn mayo one. Really nice, well presented and gluten free of course. We were impressed and will eat here again...

I visited yesterday with my 10 month old twins and a friend. There were tables available, although the space was tight, staff watched on whilst I got my twins out in to the high chairs and parked the push chair up. We were then spoken...

It was raining and we wanted shelter and a bite.We came upon this nice clean and tidy eatery.We ordered drinks and scones.The scones are served warm with butter and jam.We were impressed with the snack and the price.

My son and I visited Newark on our way to Lincoln from Nottingham and had a look at the Castle (which is right across the road from 'Feeling Peckish') before having a perfect Full English breakfast. Lots of options on the menu from standard breakfasts...

Situated close to the castle, we stumbled across this cafe and after reading the menu we decided to give it a go. Plenty to choose from, including several breakfast options. I requested fried bread rather than toast, they were happy to make the change. Good sized portions, all freshly cooked and very tasty too.

Lovely hot sandwiches and a good pot of tea. We all enjoyed it and were very impressed. Clean and reasonably priced. Would like to go back to try the tasty looking cakes.

Sunday lunch at Feeling Peckish.Looking for somewhere nice,and dog friendly,we came across this place.Graham&his staff were so friendly,we immediately knew that we had picked a great place.Sunday lunch with a choice of beef or lamb,came with 5 different veg,roast potatoes,York's pud&beautiful gravy.Followed by a large sweet from a great selection of choices,we left feeling well satisfied.There was also a varied menu on offer,which looking at other meals,they looked to be to the same high standard..So if you're in Newark,looking for great value food with friendly service,this is the place for you..

You won’t be disappointed and the food here is to die for home grown veg and a meal fit for a king and Queen . The staff were so friendly nothing too much trouble and very accommodating even let us bring in our well behaved dogs. Will definitely come back here excellent service and food.

The most friendliest restaurant,the food is fresh EVERY DAY,would definitely recommend to everyone,the chef (Kevin)bakes the tastiest cakes,sausage rolls,meals.

Very friendly staff who are very welcoming and attentive. On this occasions opted for the full English which was cooked beautifully and never seems greasy. The wide variety of specials on offer are all homemade and looked lovely as some were brought to other tables. Will definitely visit again, a firm favourite of mine. Holds a special place as I used to visit with my grandad and was always made to feel so welcome.

Held an event to today at the new council building in Newark. Feeling Peckish helped with the catering and did a first class job. Very easy to work with, great on the day and food was lovely.

Had the healthy breakfast hubby had the full English Always enjoy the food and a good variety on the menu I’ve had jacket potato, burger, quiche and breakfast always been happy

Although the service was fantastic by the waiting staff, I cannot give more than 2/5 due to the burger quality. Described as a “gourmet burger” in the middle section of the menu, and with a picture of a mouthwatering burger on the front of the menu, I was very disappointed by the burger I was served. I did eat half but had to remove half of the patty from the brioche roll because it was very tough, and full of fat/gristle. It didn’t taste like beef and left me and my partner feeling quite unwell once we got home. I was assured had I sent it back it would have been replaced, however I’m always reluctant to return food. I must add that the specials that were served to other customers looked amazing and I had serious food envy.As mentioned above, the service was very good and the waiting staff deserve 5/5.

From entering the door there was no warm welcome from the gent serving. He glanced at us but there was no acknowledgement. Then another 2 tables filled up quickly. Working for many years in the industry myself I know a quick ‘be with you in a moment’ goes a long way. He said not a dicky bird. We were looking at the menu when a lady entered. He went straight over and asked what she wanted. I was a bit puzzled as we were definitely before her. Just as he had finished serving her he picked up a pad and was walking over to us when door opened and someone else walked in who was clearly known to him. Coffee he asked her as he turned from our table and then proceeded to serve her. I could see the other table near to us getting a little annoyed. He then took our order and took it to the kitchen, I don’t see why he didn’t take the other tables order too, they were next to us. On his way back he was once more distracted by another lady coming in who wanted to discuss rotas. He stopped everything and spoke to her for several minutes during which time a table of 3 next to us walked out. Had our order not been taken I think we too would have gone as this was appalling customer service. He should have made this woman wait until he had a moment. Drinks were delivered and breakfasts arrived all piping hot and generally tasty although the sausages were not as nice as some I have had recently. We paid and left. I’m left thinking would we go back again, might do but there are warmer welcomes in town

Absolutely beautiful food. Compliments to the chef and such wonderful and polite staff. I would highly recommend this place if you want to have some delicious homemade food.

Went to Feeling Peckish as food is good but when we went again we remembered why we don’t go often there always seems to be a number of tables with reserved on but nobody at them, The last time we went we sat at a non-reserved table and all the time we were in the café nobody turned up for the reserved tables. So in all that time customers could have sat at those tables and eaten , Surely it is not cost Efficient to run a café in that way. It is such a shame that this café is run in this way surely in these days tables that are reserved should be for a set time And if after 10 minutes if customer hasn’t turned up the table should be come free so people actually can stay and have a meal. Let’s hope that this policy can be stopped so customers get a table when they visit the cafe

Yet again the food was lovely. All home made and delicious. The service was excellent and the prices very good. The sweets are all homemade and to die for. We couldn’t manage a sweet after our main and a couple of glasses of wine so we took a banofee cream pie and egg custard home for later. Such a friendly atmosphere. Love it !!!

I had an English breakfast here and the food is excellent, great produce, cleanly cooked so no greasy feeling at all.

If you want a friendly greeting as soon as you walk in, home grown food, expertly cooked this is the place to come to, everyone is super helpful and nothing to much trouble, every thing made fresh, portion size and price very reasonable and in a good location, snacks, roast dinners, everyone catered for, no negatives at all,just 100% lovely place to relax

Didn’t find this little eatery overly welcoming upon arrival, almost a look of ‘what are you doing here’ from the gentleman in the front, however we sat and ordered.

Went to this cafe today, my husband went to the counter to be served and was told will be with you in a moment, waited 10 minutes and walked out. Would not bother again has lots of other lovely cafes in Newark where you get quick service even when they are busy.

This is a good solid cafe with dependable and good quality breakfasts, plus great coffee and cakes. Can be very busy with regulars at peak times, but if you want good honest food at good value served in a relaxed setting... the big up!

The poster in the window saying hone made food made us stop and look at the menu. Theres loads of choice good prices. Looked busy so thought it must be good. Got sat straight down very quick service not long to wait on food. Big specials board too. Had the American platter very bit was delicious and the coleslaw was to die for. Too full for pudding but the cakes looked wow. Highly recommend well return. Very friendly staff

On visiting Newark on Trent there are plenty of options for eating lunch and this place is just opposite the castle. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised as the food was very good at a discount price. There is nothing too fancy but that suits me fine. We would go back any time we are visiting Newark.

Early Sunday morning, en route to Norfolk. Too early for most things to be open - so we had little choice but to call here for 2nd breakfast and coffee!

We just had sandwiches and a glass of wine each for lunch. Welcoming staff and owner, very nice sandwiches, and a good glass of wine. A good find!

My friend and I were visiting Newark for a wedding at the castle. After the rehearsal at the castle, we stumbled upon Feeling Peckish directly across the street. We were feeling peckish and it was right there, so we decided to go in and have lunch. I had the shrimp salad in a potato jacket and it was excellent. My friend had the traditional English breakfast which is served all day. I also had a double expression which was good too. The staff is easy and friendly.

Great little find, very pleasant staff and owner, all the food and drinks where served very well and promptly.

We were staying in Newark for a couple of days. It's often difficult to find your 5 a day when you are staying away from home, so this little place was a welcome find. We both chose chicken breast in a white wine sauce and it was very good, accompanied by a varied selection of freshly cooked veg and new potatoes. Although that was filling enough, we were persuaded to try the home-made rice pudding, which we couldn't resist as you don't find that on many menus. The service was friendly and we would definitely go again next time we are in Newark.

We visited feeling pekish while we were in Newark and were actually feeling pekish so decided to try this place. The food was average, nothing spectacular, but the service was awful. There was a bald man - who seemed like he ran the place, who was particularly rude and arrogant. We would have left when we experienced his rudeness but we were already eating so couldn't leave. We will definitely not be visiting this place again. If customer service is something you value then you don't want to visit this palace!

We called up this place and asked if it was dog friendly and the man on the phone said yes, so we decided to go and eat breakfast there. As we were walking there we saw another cafe next door that we had been to before and quite liked it, so we went there to check if it was dog friendly. Unfortunately it wasn’t, and we went to the place we were originally going to go to. There was a bald man outside cleaning the tables and I’m pretty sure it was the man who talked to us on the phone earlier. We asked if we could take our dog in and he said no and smirked! He didn’t even apologise or anything, and he pulled this rude smirk afterwards. I didn’t want to ask about talking on the phone, because I immediately didn’t like this man and decided not to waste my time with him, and moved on. From reading some other reviews it seems that the staff at this place are rude, and from our encounter with the bald man I strongly agree. Will definitely not be returning.

Since moving here a year ago we have been in here 6 or 7 times and have never been disappointed everything is home grown I have had chicken lasagne very nice, burger and the cooked breakfast my hubby on his last 3 visits has had the quiche with wedges, the wedges are lovely. We booked a table as I know from previous visits this place gets booked so booking a table is worth while staff are friendly and helpful, you even get a pair of scissors to cut open the mayonnaise packets (always useful).

Pop in for lunch during the week. Food is always excellent, service is always quick and staff friendly. Nice and clean cafe with a good varied menu, although I always go for the prawn baguette. Great value and worth a visit.

Prompt, Professional, Personal. We love this place, and Graham and Kevin go above and beyond to make sur3 that we are always looked after so well. The food is simply scrumptious, and we have never been disappointed...

Had to get young Master Glasgow off to an event early doors so Sunday lie in was off the agenda. Having dropped him off seemed like the only option pre 0900 on a Sunday morning were a couple of the chain coffee shops - neither which do much in the way of a cooked breakfast or anything substantial enough to mitigate the pain of a pre 0700 rise on a Sunday !!!

Have passed this place so many times and it always looks busy so decided to give it a try and we weren't disappointed. Small selection of tasty homemade cakes/deserts - lemon roulade looked great, salted caramel upside down cheesecake and bakewell tart were delicious.

This is the best place by far in Newark for a lovely meal or snack, brilliant atmosphere, staff all extremely helpful and friendly, we go here every Sunday for our dinner and everything is absolutely delicious, Graham is the perfect host preparing the drinks and Kevin is the expert in the kitchen delivering perfect food every time, prices extremely reasonable, couldn't imagine going anywhere else!

After walking past this place so many times we called in today for breakfast. We chose it as it was busier than the one next door and we made the right choice. The service was prompt and the 2 veggie breakfasts arrived piping hot. I would recommend the veggie sausages and fried bread. We will definitely be returning 5 stars

Food's always great but the accomodation is often a problem, Cant get 3 adults and four children in. But we'ver aleays enjoyed going here because the service is good and friendly.

Excellent service and excellent breakfast. Lots to choose from. I recommend the healthy breakfast. Piping hot. Toast freshly made and hot too unlike a lot of places where it seems like the toast has been hanging around so becomes lukewarm!

My daughter and I were looking for for light lunch in Newark . Came across this gem of a place by chance.

Fabulous homemade food and didn't take forever to arrive, it really was delicious. Sat and had food outside, you could easily tell it was all freshly cooked no frozen rubbish here :) The service was also first class, they were warm and friendly throughout. We will be back!!

First time I have been here as it is always busy, but glad I made it for breakfast this weekend!

Hubby and I regularly visit places for ‘coffee and cake ‘ on a Sunday so we can check places out to eat full meals at at a different time . This place is a definite no !

Visited here a few times, the food and service is always great. Absolutely love the cakes they do, they are lush. The cafe is very clean and staff all always friendly! No faults at all!

Visited Newark for the first time and found this little gem for Breakfast. Staff were great, price was more than reasonable. Excellent little place.

First time here, food good at a more than fair price. Coffee refills only 80p absolute bargain. Fairly busy on a Monday lunch
