Fatbelly Freds Fish & Seafood in North Devon

Me and mum had a takeaway from these guys and it was out of this world. The lobster was so fresh and the salad was dressed beautifully with flowers. Was amazing with champagne. Highly recommend to all my friends and family and will be ordering again ☺️

We were really looking forward to our visit after looking at their website and reading the reviews. We left feeling very disappointed, the food - using my 13 year old son’s words was “bang average”….he was being generous. The calamari was heavily battered and greasy. I had the skate wing, which on the positive side was well cooked and tasty, unfortunately it was spoilt by a pile of processed french fries served on the side. All the restaurants we have visited whilst in North Devon, staff have been wearing masks / visors, which is really sensible given the number of different customers they are coming into contact with. However, no staff were wearing any masks. Sad to say we will definitely not be visiting again on our next trip to North Devon.

My wife and I have been customers for the last few years. We've never had a bad experience with Fred's. The service and more importantly the quality of food has always been of the highest quality. We love Fred's and will be ordering again soon.

Even as a takeaway... it’s perfect! Would recommend to anyone and will be back. Superbly cooked seafood and second to none service.

Group of us went during lockdown and Geoff couldn't do enough for us. Food was great and loads of it - defeated many of us.

I rate the seafood as outstanding in freshness, preparation and quality. We were amazed at the dressed crab, huge mussels and calamari tentacles. Not only did it looked good but it was absolutely delicious. Seafood can be hit and miss but this is my favourite restaurant during our holiday in Devon, beats Dorset! Such a shame we don't live locally but we definitely return next time we are in Barnstaple. Thank you chef.

We don't get decent seafood often enough so my partner & I were so excited when we found Fatbelly's online. The restaurant itself is very small, so they are only offering a limited menu via a takeaway service at the moment. This did not affect the quality & they did not disappoint!! We called them the week before our trip to book our food - the Fruit de Mer (seafood feast for 2) as well as an extra dozen oysters. The owner - Jeff - kept in regular contact to let us know that he had collected the seafood fresh, & what to expect in case there were substitutions if the catch is a little different. We arranged a time to collect the food, & Jeff was there to greet us & went through everything in the enormous box. Everything was packaged individually & he had also supplied us with 2 of each dip to prevent double-dipping if we were social distancing whilst eating, & gave us a homemade dip for the oysters which was incredible. Everything was fantastic - except for the whelks (which isn't Jeff's fault - we had never tried them before & they just aren't for us). Easily some of the best & freshest seafood we have had in ages, & I think the best oysters I've ever had. The price tag of £100 for the Fruit de Mer is steep, but easily worth it. There was just so much food & the restaurant cost for what we had would have easily been way more than that. Highly recommended!!! Will definitely be back next year when we re-visit!!!

Ordered the fruit de mer as a takeaway from Fatbelly Fred's to cheer us up during lockdown. It certainly did the job! Perfectly packed in individual containers, it took a couple of minutes to create a seafood sensation on a plate. Everything tasted so fresh. The dressed crab and lobster were to die for🦀😍. Accompanied by a crisp fresh salad, samphire and crispy seaweed with every dressing and sauce imaginable to compliment the dish. The quantity was huge and was enough for us to enjoy crab sandwiches the following day and a seafood chowder. Excellent value for money, I can't recommend them highly enough. Can't wait for the restaurant to reopen.😊

collected our fruit de mare on Friday evening. The quality and quantity was absolutely outstanding. whole crab, lobster langoustine,crayfish, corvettes, oysters.... the list goes on and on, all beautifully cooked and presented along with a selection of dips and side dishes, they evan supplied the ice and lemons! It was all, quite simply perfection. I cannot recommend Fat belly Fred's highly enough, give them a try, you will not be dissapointed

The dressed crabs we ordered were superb, really fresh and tasty. They came with salad, again very fresh and it looked beautiful. I can honestly say the quality has not been affected at all by having a takeaway rather than a restaurant meal, it was as good as we remembered. We had planned a lunch for two, that had to become supper for four. With brown bread and chips there was easily enough crab to satisfy us all, we are already discussing what we will order next time...

The best " fruit De mer" we,ve had, fresh and plentiful. Well worth the money.had to collect it due to covid 19,but what a lovely spread

We thoroughly enjoyed our lobster, paella and calamari, monkfish and white bait dishes, thank you. My boys had already eaten the paella and other seafood dishes so the only photo is of my lobster before that disappeared.... delicious.

This is as good as it gets. Take away fine dining! I had a whole dressed crab followed by Lobster in garlic butter with salad and new potatoes. The lobster and crab were big, beautifully prepared and presented and even the salad was very fresh. My daughter had the Mini Paella which was full of seafood surprise (nothing very mini about it either) followed by Frito Misto which was delicious and very filling. This meal ranks as one of the best seafood meals I have had. So often these days lobster and crab and indeed fish is served as a tiny portion you can hardly taste. This was a real feast and a blow out. Delicious - a must try! Thank you! This is as good as it gets. If you book early you can always discuss what you like and if not on the menu he will try and get it in for you.

Had a crab salad from fat belly Fred's a couple of weeks ago and it was fantastic so been again and had a lobster salad and a crab salad. Absolutely beautiful and fresh. Amazing best shellfish we have had in years. Cannot fault anything ....

We had the takeaway Fruit De Mer .It was stunning. Every thing was very fresh and so tasty and so much we couldn’t eat it all. Will be back soon to try a different dish.So pleased to have you open again.

Having had the pleasure of eating here on many an occasion, tonight’s takeaway was as good as every dining experience. The fish is amazing and very fresh, cooked perfectly and accompanied by the perfect selection of vegetables. Clearly a chef with a passion for cooking...
