Excellent Food , lovely service thank you

We came here after googling the best burger in York and we were so disappointed! Drinks came straight away starters took ages and mains even longer! Our server was brilliant and very apologetic. It’s not hard to see why there struggling as there was at times 10 just eat/ deliveroo riders waiting near the bar so are they getting there food before the sit down customers? Plus some were rude and wouldn’t move when I went to the toilet! But I wish I’d held on for the toilet as they were filthy 😳

The food was ok but I was absolutely disgusted by the cleanliness of the place the toilets where absolutely vile

We arrived at Fat Hippo in York on Saturday 7th Dec. We had a table reserved at 3pm but arrived early as it was windy and rainy and asked if there was any chance we could be seated early (it didn’t look very busy and a few empty tables) we said we’d be happy to just have a drink at the bar but they said they couldn’t do that and to go for a walk and come back. We came back at 3pm and stood waiting for a while whilst the hostess ignored us and continued to seat other people after us. Eventually we were seated and unfortunately the experience continued to go downhill from there! The service was terrible, all the staff ignored you when you tried to get their attention for anything. We had to ask 3 times for a knife and fork so food was going cold. I enjoyed my food but my step mum only had a few bites of hers before giving up and saying she couldn’t eat it. The whole atmosphere was just shocking and I think the staff need a refresher training on how to deal with the public as none of them seemed to have customer service skills! Would not recommend!

Avoid, alternatives are more likely to treat you as a paying customer. A totally understandable mistake was made by a waiter (misidentifying and misnaming a meal), but this led to someone receiving a cheaper incorrect meal. We brought this up expecting an easy resolution. Instead was met with (presumably a manager) explaining in an accusatory tone that the mistake was impossible and that they would have to pay the full price of another meal if they wanted to eat what they ordered. All the while she was impatiently rushing them into a decision claiming that she had to be elsewhere. No apology, no accountability. Even if the customers were at fault (which was immediately claimed), why deal with them in such a condescending and unpleasant manner? A small and forgivable mistake blown out of proportions into a highly unpleasant experience. By far the worst service I have witnessed at a restaurant.

Okay is as good as I can say. The menu offers a lot more than it delivers. The offer of a moist burger is unfortunately delivered through it being on the greasy side. To be fair it was tasty but just no more than average. The shakes I expected to be thick given the "soft scoop" promised ingredient but was usual milk consistency. Again tasted Okay but not amazing. Service was reasonable but being asked for a tip is unusual since this isn't the USA.

Noisy youngsters serving just stand around chatting very loudly and messing around. The young boy even brought the bill and card machine to us when we hadn't even asked for it and we're still drinking our drinks after finishing out food . Drunk up paid the bill and quickly left felt pushed out even though the restaurant was half empty. Terrible Service from a bunch of kids !

Amazing, delicious, very unhealthy food. I recommend not getting a starter because you won't be able to eat it all.

We have been going to Fat Hippo since it opened in Newcastle. But I think this was our last time. The food arrived in good time but the chips and onion rings were cold proper cold. The server tock them back and left the burgers. The burgers were missing the cheese so we sent the back. Another couple next to us had the wrong food delivered and walked out. No real apology from the staff. Gutted as we used to love a fat hippo.

awful experience! took 40 minutes to get drinks , and the food arrived after an hour which 5 meals were cold and 1 meal was missing chips , we were told the new meals would be 15 minutes . After 30 minutes still no meals and when we complained we were offered complimentary drinks which also never arrived . we left after an hour and 50 minutes and went elsewhere for food . It seems they focus on the takeaway service rather than the paying customers in their restaurant.

Booked Fat Hippo last night for a family meal. Got seated promptly and our drinks and starters came within 15 minutes. Starters were fab, we had the cheese balls and dirty waffle fries. We then ended up waiting an hour and 15 minutes for our mains. During this time, the waitress serving us kept walking past our finished starters and didn’t check on us to see if we wanted anymore drinks or to ask how our food was. We then asked a waitress how long our food would be, she said she would go and check but she never returned. We then had another 30 minutes before our food arrived, with no apologies for the delay! We only got our dirty plates cleared once our food arrived at the table, which the waitress who gave us our food quickly apologised for and cleared them away. No clean cutlery or napkins given, which we then had to ask for to be able to eat our mains. The food was great. I had the Fat Hippo burger, which they were able to cater to my dairy allergy. Definitely a great place to go if you have any allergies! Toilets were disguising. Mens urinal was overflowing and the ladies toilets had water and toilet roll all over the floor. Not what you expect in a restaurant!! Such a shame that the service let it down. I appreciate busy Saturday nights, but the waitresses were just stood gossiping at the tills rather than serving customers who had dirty plates and empty drinks on their tables! I’ve eaten here in the past and never experienced such shocking service. Such a shame as the food itself is great.

Ordered from Just eat, the food arrived stone cold, cheese was like a fresh slice out of the fridge, chicken like it had came from the same place. It was almost like you made the whole dish out of leftovers. I spent 37 quid on something that near enough all went in the bin. Then Just eat thought a 25% refund is acceptable for food that was inedible.

The decor and feeling of the place can only be likened to that of a crack den, of some sort. Feels more like a sleazy club than a burger restaurant. Most ugly and uncozy place I’ve ever ventured into. Food took over an hour to arrive, and when it did, the fries were so hard I could have chipped a tooth on them. Burger was plain and luke warm, shocking experience. The price however, is not the worst.

Called in for a breakfast with my wife and two children 14/13. Kids had pancakes I had sausage and egg. Food and service was good however at 9:30 on a snowy morning this venue had no heating on 🥶.

Waited over an hour for main course. Cold food when it arrived staff weren't happy we complained Server snatched cold fries from wife's hand attitude of the server was awful the then topped off when manager threw bill on the table .

The food and service was lovely! The burgers were nice but I preferred the side dishes. I found them very tasty and original.

When we arrived we were led upstairs and to a room at the back. After 15 minutes someone finally came to take our order After which they proceeded to turn off the heating for the room. Given that is was -2c outside it cooled down very quickly. After 45 minutes of sitting in the cold we enquired about our food and asked for heating to be turned back of. The waiter said you ordered you food 43 minutes ago and the wait time can be upto 45 minuets she then proceeded to turn the heating on again, she was then asked by what I can only assume was a floor manager why she put it back on, she told him we were cold and he shuck his head and walked off. After over an hour we decided to give up. We walked out and went to five guys across the road instead. Terrible experience, horrible and lazy staff and food never arrived. 0 stars.

The BBQ chicken wings starter was really tasty and enjoyable. However, the chicken burger was cold when it arrived and the service was quite slow - it was as though it had been sat out for a while before being brought to the table. The restaurant itself was also cold with it being cold outside.

Food was great, reasonably priced. Seated area was really cold and it took quite a long time for food to be prepared and brought to the table.

I ordered 7 burgers, which each came with complementary sides. To my shock, 2 burgers and sides were missing, I was hosting my friend’s birthday party and 2 of us went hungry. We did not spend £100 to get such a horrible quality of service from the fat hippo. I would like to say that I was very happy with the courier, and he was very helpful. However, the service of the fat hippo was atrocious, and I will never buy from them again.

Service was relatively fast, burgers were delicious and very filling. I had the Halloween beeflegeuse burger and it was one of the best burgers I've ever had, especially as someone who can be quite picky about burgers. Would definitely come back

Mediocre burger and fries in terms of flavour, but what I wasn’t expecting was loads of gristle in the burger. And that was in both of our burgers.

The lunch time deal is a great value for money. You get a “small” burger and a choice of a side. The burger is very filling and it does not feel small. Service was very quick. Quite dark, but I know that is the vibe of the establishment so this is not a bad thing.

Very disappointed. Considering we waited over an hour for the food to be prepared, we expected the food to at least come a little bit warm and taste nice. I don't mind waiting a long time for food as long as it is good.The food was completely cold, the fries were stale, chicken wings barely had any buffalo sauce as well as the burger. Despite being a buffalo burger it had very little buffalo sauce to the point where it just tasted like a regular chicken burger. I understand that on a Saturday night they will be busy, and when ordering delivery the food doesn't come as hot and fresh but this came completely cold, and the fries were stale enough to suggest they were either old fries or had been left out for a considerable amount of time before being picked up for delivery. We couldn't even finish the food, and unfortunately didn't enjoy any of what we had.

Absolutely lush was made to feel very welcome by Mercedes she accommodated me, my friend and my daughter in her pram brilliantly. When she was having a paddy too she came over to cheer her up. Food was amazing too. Really made our afternoon thank you!

If I could put 0 stars I would. Waited from 15:40 till 16:55 to recieve our food order. I spoke to multiple members of staff about the fact I had a coach to get on soon, they said our food would be next. After everyone around us came, ate and left I asked again about our food. It did not arrive. I had to get on a 3 hour coach journey without eating a single thing all day. We had this booking for months because we heard good things. Such a disappointing experience.

It was okay, the staff were rushed and the service wasn't the best. No checking on how our meal was, I ordered a pot of extra sauce... which I didn't get, not the end of the world but hey. It was a bit of meh experience. Sorry to say. Good if you're not bothered about atmospherics and service.

Avoid. Was sat opposite noisey fan so could not hear and was cold. Men's toilet not working so disabled used instead and was left without paper. We had to remind the server re our starter so they bought our starter and burger togeter. Starter cold. We sent back burgers for later. We then had to wait ages for burgers after starter had finished as they forgot.......terrible service. No apology. Go to Five Guys opposite.

Service very fast, Burgers are fantastic, had the one with peanut butter and it was amazing. Went for the buffalo chicken wings to start which were very nice. Had no room for desert as the meal was very filling. Would definitely go back.

Came here for food as it looked cool from the outside, but had a bad experience with food. Asked for Hand-Cut chips with my burger but received fries and got charged extra for dips that we had to repeatedly ask for. Was told I’d get the fries replaced but after 15 minutes of waiting I just paid and left. Charged for dips we never used for chips that never came. Waitress knew and didn’t even acknowledge or mention anything to us whilst paying and leaving. Burger was a solid 4/10 too…. I’ll never be returning

A nice place for a burger... But quite expensive for a burger... I actually think that 5 guys have a better burger. Service wasn't great but at least they didn't add the "optional" service charge.

What an experience. Waitress was nice enough. Kept forgetting to bring things and our drink glasses stayed empty. Sat us by some sort of exhaust fan that kept kicking on. Was really loud. Difficult to enjoy your conversation over the noise. The chicken on my burger wasn't cooked properly it was cold in the middle. Out onions and sauce on my burger after stating I didn't want them. They did remake the burger quickly. The burgers were mediocre at best. The toilets were a complete disaster. Would definitely avoid this establishment in the future.

Without a doubt the best burger I have ever had, place was full - service was good. Only downside is that draught beer is on the menu, but only canned beer is actually served :(. Still didn’t make the experience any less good. Be back soon!

This was a great find! Great food and good service. Imaginative menu... I had the peanut butter and jelly burger... nice to say I have tried it! Would return without a doubt.
