Great place. There's a shop where you can get ice cream and chocolates. You can take the chocolate tour. There's one where you can make your own truffles. The chocolate is nice and creamy. I will definitely go again when I go back to York.

Wasn't sure what to expect here but we had some free time in York and decided to visit. It's very easy to find as it's right at the end of the Shambles and you enter next to the chocolate shop. You start the tour on the top floor and when you exit the lift you are transported back to Victorian times and met by the tour guide. Ours was Rachel C and she was fab! She really bought it all to life and was always smiling. You're told about the local companies such as Rowntree and Terry's and some characters tell you about their part in those companies. You then learn a little about chocolate tasting and get to make your own lolly and try some freshly made chocolates for the shop downstairs. We really enjoyed our time here and it's definitely worth a visit. If you travel by train to York you can also get buy one get one free which is great.

Really great place. So interesting. We booked the Tour and Truffle Rolling which I'd highly recommend. We did it with our 11 and 13 year old boys, they probably didn't love the museum part but Sarah, our guide, held everyone's attention and was very enthusiastic. Lots of chocolate to taste as you go round the museum and learn how chocolate is made and taste the different progressions of chocolate through the years. It lasted about 90 minutes all in, ending with making a chocolate lolly, rolling truffles and then seeing how they make fondant filled chocolates (and tasting them 😋). You can look round the museum at your leisure also and remember the good old days when Quality Street tins were 11 times the size they are now! Highly recommended. (The cafe downstairs is also great, we had a very tasty flavoured hot chocolate and there is a toilet there.)

It was ok but expensive for what you get. Don’t really see how the chocolates are made it’s more about how the factory was started. Don’t see the point of “decorating” a chocolate lollipop at the end? Ok if you have a party of school kids but not adults! Shop very expensive over £3 for a chocolate orange when the shop a few doors down is selling the same item for just over a £1? Not very impressed

Biggest tourist trap in York, hands down. Despite the hype, the chocolate isn’t local or independent—it’s owned by Nestlé. The whole experience felt lackluster, and the chocolate was no better than what you’d grab at a supermarket. The tour starts with a ride in a lift to the tour floor, where you get a few samples. From there, you’re shuffled into a small theater for a brief video on the history of chocolate, then moved to another room for more tastings and some underwhelming electronic candy-making exhibits. The highlight—if you can call it that—is making your own pop candy or chocolate, which was just okay. The whole thing is shockingly short and absolutely not worth the steep price. At the end, you’re led to a café selling overpriced hot chocolate and more subpar sweets. For what they charge, you could practically buy admission to a theme park in the U.S. Save your money and skip this one—it’s nothing but a tourist trap.

For my birthday, my husband surprised me with a trip to York to visit the Christmas markets and explore York's Chocolate Story. Having previously been to places like Cadbury World and Valor, I can confidently say this was one of the most enjoyable chocolate experiences yet! We arrived at 11 and began our tour with Reanna, who was absolutely fantastic—engaging, knowledgeable, and full of energy. At every stage of the tour, we were treated to free samples of chocolate, making the experience both delicious and immersive. The educational talks were thoughtfully crafted to appeal to all age groups, which added a nice touch to the fun. The highlight of the visit was creating our own chocolate lollipops. The activity was organised, allergy-friendly, and a blast from start to finish. It was such a memorable and delightful day!

Had a surprisingly fun time in this experience. Learnt lots through interactive displays (I won't spoil the surprises!) and a really fun and engaging host. Kelly was full of warm energy, had a great sense of humour and tons of knowledge and best of all we got to taste a lot of yummy chocolate too. It's funny... From the outside you'd think this was some lazy, corporate venture but the staff all across the store and museum were really friendly and helpful, and there's clearly been a lot of effort put into it all. Definitely worth a visit. I also fully recommend buying your tour tickets in advance as it can get very busy and tours can book up before you get there. You can also save a few quid which is a good excuse to spend more in the shop afterwards! Honestly, if you have a passing interest in the various sweet makers of York, and you want to know more about how chocolate has been utilised over the centuries, this is absolutely two hours you won't regret. Ps. "Pull the lever!!" 😁

Rachel was our tour guide and she was lovely. I went with my partner and we did the truffle rolling experience and it was a fun activity. The hot chocolate in the cafe was delicious! I tried the caramel hot chocolate and it might have been the best hot chocolate I’ve ever tasted :) The only downside to the place was the toilets. There is two shared men and women cubicles, which is fine, however they both smelled horrific. The smell of old urine was really pungent, despite the paper on the back of the door saying the toilets had been checked frequently. When customers are visiting the state of the toilets should be better.

We attended on the 1st November 2024. The Chocolate Story's new chocolate and gin tour is a delightful experience that pairs two iconic British indulgences perfectly. Despite being a recent addition, the tour is well-organised and executed, showcasing the expertise of the chocolatiers. While it would be ideal for the venue to stock the specific gins featured in the tasting, the pairing of chocolate and gin is truly exceptional. The chocolatiers have a keen understanding of flavour profiles and have curated a selection that complements the spirits beautifully. If you're a fan of chocolate, gin, or both, this tour is a must-try. It offers excellent value for money and a memorable experience. Don't miss out – book your spot now!
