Me and my partner went to visit the ivy for our anniversary in York. My partner was immediately greeted and asked how he was and I felt very awkward and completely ignored from the beginning. We sat down and were offered water for the table which turned out to be an additional £6 charge to our very expensive bill. The starters were pretty good and the drinks were nicely presented which I couldn’t fault plus the waitress who served us was very lovely and did try to be actively attentive to both of us EQUALLY which helped me feel a lot less awkward. Despite this the mains we chose were extremely small and the steak tartare wasn’t very nice. We were still hungry and ended up filling up on beer. The bill for two non-alc drinks each, a small starter, and a small main each came to over £120 which is probably the worst value meal I’ve ever had, an additional service charge of £16 was added to our bill which I felt too bad to ask to remove. The whole experience was highly uncomfortable and I believe that if this is the norm for the ivy, your money can be spent much better elsewhere.

It’s a nice, nowhere near Ivy London, Manchester, or Leeds. It’s a very toned down version with, for example, a coat stand rather than a wardrobe or cloak room. Service is the same for every guest, courteous but standardised, and the food and drink selection is reasonable. On this visit there was a full range, which was great compared to last time. Overall, a good visit, and nice staff, food, and drinks.

Came a little early for our reservation but was brought straight to our table so a good start. Food was just okay nothing special and one of the starters prawn cocktail was very disappointing , it’s style over substance comes on a beautiful plate with a silver crab on it the the waitress poured the Marie sauce out of a silver jug with iced steam coming out , looks very impressive sadly that’s where it ended because it was very bland, frozen prawn’s tiny and full of water laid on a bed of mushy lettuce and peppers not worth the price of £13.95, always get a prawn cocktail never had one that tasteless. When the young waitress asked how it was we told her and she just said well it’s personal preference so what’s the point in her asking?she seemed inexperienced so we said could you let the manager know she said yes but that was it never heard any more , we have been to the ivy in London and Manchester and never asked them to take the service charge off because they earned it sadly we felt this time that was not the case so had it removed and would not return.

The food quality is good. The quantities are relatively small, so we were glad that we added some 'sides' to our order or we would have left hungry. They served my white wine at room temperature, which is not what I would expect. Their speciality dessert is a chocolate bombe, onto which they pour a hot sauce which causes most of the chocolate to disappear. This dessert is incredibly sweet - we wouldn't order it again. I suggest you check your bill, as ours required them to correct it. Considering the high price of the food, the service charge is outrageously high.

First time visit for me. The decor was lovely and the service was excellent. The vegetarian choices were a little basic, so as I am pescatarian, I chose fish & chips. My husband had Shepherds pie, and we all had arranchini balls to start with. My daughter had the same mains as me. The arranchini balls were nice but would have been better served with a sauce as they were a little dry. The fish & chips were nice, as was the Shepherds pie. The Creme brulee was lovely, as was the chocolate bomb. Presentation was good, and my daughters peanut allergy was handled well. It is a very noisy, busy restaurant. The price was average for these days in a nice restaurant. All in all a pleasant lunch. If I was in the area I might call in for breakfast as my husband says it is very good, and the cappucino was excellent.

Prawn cocktail (nearly £14) definitely the worst I’ve had. Absolutely nothing to it but a few prawns, the odd bit of chopped up avocado, and the Marie Rose sauce watered down with some red liquid that was poured all over it. The plate had a massive silver crab on it! Utterly pointless. This was followed by shepherds pie which was ok but nothing special. We were upstairs where a combination of too loud music and very noisy other tables made conversation difficult. To sum up - food average, ambience noisy upstairs, service ok, cost absolutely ludicrous. If you don’t mind small portions and excessive cost then I highly recommend. Personally I’ve had far better, more satisfying, far cheaper meals in village pubs. Not really sure why people go here. Maybe it’s the hype and to be seen!

Called in on the off chance we could get a table without reservation on a busy Saturday lunchtime and the front on house staff happily accommodated our custom to show us to our table. Once seated the service was very good. The only slight negative feedback I could give is that we were charged £4.95 for a bottle of table water offered to use by the waiter. Though at no point did we get informed this would be chargeable. Irrespective of this small detail it didn't dampen our experience and would happily return to The Ivy in York.

Bordering on rotten. I went with my wife for my birthday, who’d booked well in advance. We were stuck by the door, by the bar and next to the main thoroughfare. We had people charging past us all night, no intimacy or romance. There was a group of drunk girls shrieking at the bar for most of our meal. The food was mostly good, apart from my wife’s chips that were hard and seemed to have been reheated. Our waitress was pretty disinterested and forgot several things. Nevertheless we were charged almost £20 for service alone. Left feeling absolutely rinsed, you can do far better for less money. Go to Skosh, it’s miles better. Addendum: after their request that I contact them ‘at my earliest convenience’, gentle reader, they did precisely nothing. Not even acknowledge my email. So you may have a good experience, you may not. Roll the dice and pay the (very expensive) bill.

What a disappointment. I came here with my friend as we thought it would be a nice treat for us and had high expectations (as anyone would considering the prices) and we were so let down. We were greeted at the door by a lovely lady and then taken to our seats. Our waitress asked what we wanted to drink immediately and we asked for some tap water and we would be decided on drinks when she came back with the tap water. We eventually got our drink and food orders placed, unfortunately some of the items we wanted weren’t available so I had to change what I wanted and a Had to skip the started as there was nothing else I liked, however everytime the waitress said something wasn’t available and I needed to choose something else, she stood by the table until I had decided which was pretty pressuring, but I guess fine. The food came and it was average, I had my hopes up but was a little let down. We finished and our plates were cleared and we asked for the bill. About 30 minutes later we got our bill after asking again and the waitress held the bill in her hands with the card reader. We asked to split the bill and she told us how much it would be but still didn't give us the bill. I told her the price didn’t sound right, considering I only had a fishcake and lemonade (which I think you gave me lime and soda water) it came to £30 per person which was way too much. When I told her it didn’t sound right she said it was and that went back and forth a few times, still holding the receipt so we couldn’t check it and we eventually paid and got given the receipt. We read the receipt and you charged us £5 for the water!?!? And you added on service charge without disclosing?? I would understand if service charge was optional but come on. Anyways, we were really disappointed and lesson learnt for next time to go elsewhere. Sorry for the long review but I’d rather make people aware.

When the bill was read out to us my friend said ‘that doesn’t sound right’. The waitress did not explain there was any added service charge and just exclaimed the bill was correct, and kept the bill in her hands so we could not see. Did not offer to show us our bill until we paid. We asked for tap water and got given £4.95 water instead. Would not recommend. Food and ambience was decent however, but distracted by disappointing service.

We had saved up to come to The Ivy for my husband’s special birthday. Despite booking well in advance we were given a table near the door with the bar behind us, the champagne buckets next to us and facing the walkway. For the whole experience there was no privacy or intimacy, we had to watch everybody walk in and walk out, watch many of the waiting staff come and go and collect buckets, the bar had groups of people who were shouting and screaming and nobody intervened. When we arrived at our table, there were no condiments, a waitress opened a bottle of water and poured it without asking and we later found out we’d been billed for this. Our starters of scallops were beautifully presented and very tasty, one main was fish and chips, the fish was the best I’ve ever tasted but the chips were overcooked and the mushy peas cold, the second main was steak and chips and this was good. For pudding we chose the special Ivy Chocolate Bomb; one celebratory, one ordinary. Nice caramel sauce and popping candy but they were just ok and the taste wasn’t amazing. It was a lovely touch to bring out a large birthday profiterole and that was really tasty. Because of the way our table was laid, my husband and I couldn’t both have our feet flat, I have disabilities and by the end of the night we couldn’t wait to leave. It was so intense. We came for a special experience and had anything but! Then when we got the bill, a service charge had been automically added, again without asking. Now normally, we like to be generous in this situation because we appreciate the hardwork and servant hearts of others. However, there was little conviviality and my husband really did not want to pay it. We did because we wanted to leave and I didn’t want to ruin this occasion for him any further. We were so looking forward to visiting but sadly, won’t be returning, even for that amazing fish!

Disappointing after waiting almost an hour for food to arrive. The ambiance and lovely decor eluded to a slow paced, all-day meal, but we were frustrated and hungry arriving around 12:30 in an only slightly busy restaurant. Drinks arrived timely, but that was about it. The food, when arrived was tasty albeit ordinary, but portions (salad and shepherd's pie) were small, the burger a normal size. Glad my daughter added the parmesan truffle chips (again, ordinary) as she was still hungry. Don't know what to say about the zucchini twists, they were bland even with the accompanying sauce, and were clumsy to eat without a fork and plate, but were served as fingerfood? The manager apologized and offered a round of drinks, which we declined. We noticed she had to apologize to a few other tables as well. We did not opt for dessert fearing another lengthy delay. Our bill had a discretionary 2.5% added, we thought they might have comp'd the starter, at least, not needed, but would have tempted a return. Glad others had a better experience, but we will not be back.

We were asked to move off the table because it was booked for another party - this was not the deal we signed up for when we booked . I down loaded an Ivy app in order to receive loyalty tokens because we paid a lot of money for the meal - nothing has been added to our app , we complained to the restaurant staff - they were very unhelpful and quite frankly couldn’t care less . We came for lunch as a half term treat and we weren't disappointed. The service was excellent. The duck parfait for starter was stunning. You are paying for the experience but it was worth it for a special occasion.

Excellent Service: Kind, friendly and helpful staff quick to see us to our table take our order and bring our meals and drinks. Food and Drink: Nice range of drinks to choose from the British lemonade and larger were very refreshing and chilled. We had the Fish and Chips and the Ivy Burger good portion size quality food served piping hot with plenty of condiments. Atmosphere: Wonderful decor with nice furniture comfy seating and well spaced out with a good choice of quiet instrumental music in the background. Super easy to book online as well and great pricing for the service, setting and food and drink offered. Would recommend and definitely will be going again on our next visit.

We booked for Valentine’s Day left feeling disappointed. The best part of the meal was the sourdough bread,it was delicious.Unfortunately the rest of our meal was not as good.I had the Asian chicken skewers which were very small and dry ,my husband had the squid but the portion was very small.Again the mains were very small .My husband had lobster linguine. He was searching for the lobster.I had sirloin steak but unfortunately it was tough and fatty ( gave it to my husband who found it difficult to eat.My sides were creamed potato ( approximately one tablespoon ) also peas and B-road beans .Again a very small portion. We then sat and waited and waited before after 40 minutes my husband managed to order a dessert for himself. We then had to wait and wait to pay our £150 bill. Staff were lovely, until we got our main .Nobody came back to us .Portions were very small.

Went for a special Valentines tea - BIG mistake. Vv noisy - and busy. Food quite ordinary and a bit gross. Service OKish. Silver tea pots/jugs needed polishing. Cheap Champagne - not at all what we were expecting unfortunately. We've had dinner with them before and it was much nicer, but not again!

More style than substance. Small portions adequately prepared, but I'd prefer hot food to the showmanship of e.g. pouring soup from an individual jug into a bowl at the table. Adding a surcharge to a main course that wasn't listed on the menu is the sort of 'error' that might not have been noticed. The menu seems designed to easily add cost to the final bill. There are many better places in York, so I doubt I'll be back a 3rd time.

We were staying at The Grand hotel in york&decided to try The ivy for a change it looks stunning from the outside seem really full we noticed so booked it,first of all it was dark could hardly see the menu decided to have a starter but we didn't want to spoil our appetite for the main meal, long story short the steak ordered only came with watercress on top&a sauce no chips or anything you had to get these separately, just as well we had a starter it wasn't a lot for the money&the cottage pie I ordered about 4" round again not deep&no vegetables just gravy had to order peas, broad beans like a child's meal so very disappointed then a surcharge added so £100 total 2 white wine&soda water sourdough bread&olives a very mediocre steak chips&small cottage pie with peas, just paid the bill smiled walked out lesson learnt definitely do not judge a book by it's cover, avoid!!!

Two couples and two of us had our 50th birthday on the actual day, we let them know that this was a special occasion for us. Absolutely nothing was mentioned except a quick happy birthday on arrival, after seeing many post about little special touches with their meal we were hoping for something. Nope nothing, we wasn’t expecting a free drink but maybe a happy birthday in chocolate on our dessert dish? Spent a fortune too…

The Ivy isn't somewhere I would usually frequent, however, we did win a 3 course meal with champagne thanks to Ignite Concerts, so ofcourse we couldn't turn it down. The food was amazing, the service nothing short of exceptional and the atmosphere had a genuine feeling to it.

Back again and again and again...where is my duck parfait!!😂 What a beautiful surprise it find out they are celebrating throughout January…over 100 years…2 course meal for £19.17 plus £5 for dessert.
