El Gaucho in York

As this is an Argentinian steak restaurant, expect a bit of an expense. That said, 4 (steak) mains with two bottle of wine were £165. The food is simple, good, well cooked and well served. Would recommend.

Beautiful place and lovely staff. Hubby had a steak which was cooked to perfection. I had steak kebab which was medium rare and melted in my mouth. The steak was one of the best we have had, even from a well known steak restaurant. We had pudding which was also lovely. Highly recommend this little restaurant when in York. Thank you 🩷

Went tonight & got in without booking as it was quite early . My wife had Ribeye steak & I had fillet steak. Both our meals were cooked to perfection & the bottle of red we shared was beautiful. Service with a smile & so respectful made our experience even better & all for a very reasonable price .

Overall it was a nice experience shared with friends in the centre of town. Both my friend and I ordered a medium rare steak. His was the fillet and mine the rib eye. The fillet was great but the rib eye was over cooked and a little dry. My other friends had the chicken and that was decent. The desserts were a little disappointing. The chocolate fudge cake was dry and the homemade dessert with cookies didn't hit the spot. If I go again, I'll try the fillet, skip the dessert and have the coffee, whipped cream with baileys.

Great place, they squeezed us in on a Saturday night after being turned away from countless places. The food was fantastic and we had the best meal of our weekend.

My husband and I went here for his birthday and the food was amazing, one of the most beautiful meals I’ve ever had! Restaurant was cute and cosy, staff so helpful and friendly, can’t wait to return!

Tasty steak which is why I gave it 3 stars, but everything else was let down by the paltry , unappetising vegetables it came with. Just looked like scraps that had had the life microwsved out of them. The jacket porato, though described as chargrilled. was pale and unappetising...probably microwaved. For £32 to only be able to eat the steak, it's not good value. Shame, because the steak was good...service attentive, but everything else, not so good. Won't return.

Top notch service. I ordered takeaway, although it says they don't normally do it online. (They weren't busy when I went in, early dinner on a Tuesday, which may be why they allowed it.) They let me sit down, offered me water, and checked in on my occasionally during the wait. They even gave a chocolate with the bill, which I don't see happen as much with takeaway. Very kind. I ordered the empanadas and serloin steak with chips and veg. The empenadas were fantastic -- I would go back for them alone. The chips were cooked and flavored well, as were the veggies. They complained the steak well. The steak was cooked to a perfect mediun rare and was a generous portion. You certainly get what you pay for here in terms of flavor and service. I would happily go again and recommend this place to others.

It's a genuine Argentine parilla, don't bother having steak anywhere else! My Dad and I enjoyed the full experience, empanadas, Malbec, solomillo, alfajor and mate cocido. Friendly and efficient service from Nestor and the team. We made a one-hour train journey for this and we'd definitely do it again! Hasta la proxima...

Can't recommend. Meat was poor for me. They took a small amount of money off the bill but tbh it's not the experience we go out for. If we'd have sat down and they'd have offered us poor quality meat for 2/3 the cost we'd have gone somewhere else. Very disappointed.

Walking back to our hotel, we saw this restaurant and was tempted by the menu, so tried to book a table for later that evening. The waiting team were great, able to fit us in and even accommodated our request for a specific table. We came back and were quickly served with drinks and ordered starters and mains, I had the safe bet of chorizo and was pleased with the choice. There was a good delay between courses, which I appreciated, not too long and not too short. For mains, most people had steak which was cooked to perfection and was a good cut of meat. The price we paid was very reasonable for the quality of the food, the service and the venue, would be happy to return if I'm ever in York again. Many thanks

Mum and I came for a meal at El Gaucho. My rump steak was lovely, very tender and succulent. The sides were disappointing, my salad was just rocket leaves with a couple of tiny slices of pickled onions in. Mum had the lamb chops, but they were dry and very very chewy, almost inedible. So overall, a disappointment considering the high prices.

Great cozy authentic S.American steak house. Great choice to choose from.Served with big appetites in mind. Extensive choice on food & drinks menu cooked to your liking. Never disappoints...Staff friendly & welcoming. Well worth a visit for those with an appetite for delish meat dishes.

This restaurant had been on my radar for a while, mainly because of the fantastic reviews, I finally booked it. Unfortunately it was disappointing to say the least. The steak was tough and dry, the vegetables weren't a little crunchy, just raw and very cold, the chips were the only nice thing on the plate. In fairness, I complained about the steak, they did cook another one which was marginally better. At 8pm on a Saturday night there was only a handful of customers, the restaurant was 75% empty, so I suspect they aren't getting a lot of repeat business, which leads me to their reviews, I'm not sure how they have achieved so many good ones, it's a mystery.

Excellent everything!! The delicious meat empanadas, the excellent chorizo ​​steak, the attention of 10, Nestor the boy who served us was divine!! The beautiful atmosphere. From the moment I passed the door I felt like I was in Argentina.. Thank you for representing us so well with the food, the place and the attention 🥰 we felt at home. Successes!!

4 for lunch. Seated and offered menus as soon as we arrived. Reasonably priced drinks & all the food was cooked & served perfectly. The Argentinian steaks were amazing and priced as per the on line menu. Could not have asked for more. Staff exceptional in attention to detail & care. Will be back.

Booked a table which was 9pm, last reservation time available which was disappointing but not surprising based on our previous experience. Arrived early to find there were 2 or 3 empty tables (unsure if early finishers or no shows), service was slow which was surprising as most other diners had been served & were leaving. No starters required, but two steaks one medium to well & one medium rare, when they arrived they looked amazing but mine was almost rare not medium to well, I could barely eat it, caught a waiter & explained, he apologised it was taken away & cooked further which was better but so disappointing in the first instance as expectations were high based on previous visit!

Excellent food and wine plus excellent service. A great meal to celebrate my birthday and the atmosphere was fine too. Well done!

The rib eye steak was delicious, medium rare better, the service was so warmly, and the liqueur was amazing!! Even the gift chocolate was delicious!! Love it!!

One of best places in York to get steak

This has been our 2nd visit to this restaurant & once again we weren't disappointed. We can't fault it in anyway, excellent food, friendly attentive service. The steak's were cooked perfectly and were delicious. If you are visiting York and intend to go to a steakhouse then you will struggle to beat this one.

Went here yesterday after reading the reviews and all I can say is how disappointed I was. Ordered the stuffed pepper for starter which turned out to be a small slice of pepper not a whole pepper with bolognaise and cheese . It was nice but not worth the money . My partner ordered garlic mushrooms which were warm but not hot . Mains I had a 14oz rib eye , it was ok but not worth the money . I have always had amazing streaks in Argentinian steak houses before but not here. My partner had a mixed grill and the sirloin steak was full of gristle and the worst cut of sirloin I have ever seen , she told the staff and they didn’t care . Salad is just a few varied leaves with a vinaigrette and not a salad . Service wasn’t great , we sat for ages waiting for drinks then I had to get their attention when we needed another . The vegetables were almost raw and dried out. The toilets were disgusting very dated in desperate need of replacing . There are much better places to eat in York and I suggest you give this a miss .

Fabulous food, fabulous ambience and fabulous service. Highly recommended! We ordered 2 fillet steaks which were cooked to perfection, followed by yummy deserts. We both had wine by the glass which was excellent value too. We have to give a special mention to our waiter Callum, who was a positively warm, attentive, friendly young guy who was also very knowledgeable with the menu and wine list. It’s rare to get service like this these days! Thanks to everyone at El Gaucho - we had a wonderful time and hope one day to return.

Visited on a Sunday evening in December. We were the only table in the restaurant from 8pm onwards. I ordered ribs for starter, they were dry and tasteless with hardly any meat on. Me and my husband ordered steak for main, both came overcooked. We politely requested new steaks and the chef agreed the steaks were overcooked. The other couple we were dining with had finished their mains long before our new steaks arrived. Mine was undercooked this time but I didn’t complain I just ate what I could. My husband’s steak was fatty and poor quality. We had a young waitress who tried her best but her knowledge of the wines and menu was disappointing. The bill arrived and we were shocked to see the full amount was requested. My friend went to speak with the manager and explained it was disappointing not to eat together as a couple and it would’ve been the right thing to do not to charge for the poor quality steaks. The manager/owner was extremely rude and was shouting. He said “we are not busy from 4pm on Sunday” and made it seem we had been inconveniencing him by booking a later table. He needs to learn a lesson in customer service and I definitely wouldn’t recommend his establishment or his food!!!

Returned to El Gaucho after having a lovely meal there when we last visited York. Lovely, friendly and attentive young staff and the premises still have a good vibe (even on a wet Monday evening) My wife ordered a ribeye which was beautifully cooked, however looked and ate suspiciously like rump. I had the mixed grill which was fine but somehow not particularly inspiring. The Malbec was lovely and reasonably priced.

Absolutely incredible. A lovely cosy atmosphere (sat downstairs). Staff were attentive and great fun. Wine was fantastic and reasonably priced. Now, the FOOD! We were been careful not to be greedy as to save space for the main event so we just shared the Nachos. Hands down the best Nachos I’ve ever had. Unbelievable. We love steak, but this place is on another level. My partners 11oz fillet was a thing of beauty and cooked to perfection, she’s hard to please and said this is the best fillet she’s ever had and will ever had. I had the mixed grill and couldn’t believe it, sensational!! The cuts of steak were just incredible and again cooked to perfection. I got a sirloin, rump and quarter of a fillet with a chorizo sausage and rib. Just incredible and don’t get me started on the chips. You won’t get better than this place. And I think the value for money is insane. Highly, highly recommend!!

Absolutely delicious food and fantastic service.

Just WOW! We love a steak and this was the best we have ever had. We started with pork ribs and crispy garlic mushrooms and neither disappointed. The ribs melted off the bone and were strong in flavour and perfectly juicy. The garlic mushrooms were a good size with a delicious creamy garlic dip. We went for the Solomillo fillets 11oz. I have no words to describe what we tasted, it was pure delight. Cooked to perfection with a full beautiful flavour, the only disappointment was realising we had eaten it all. We recommend this place to everyone and we will be back. The Argentinian beer (Quilmes) was a perfect pair with it being non gassy , I opted for the Merlot

My partner and I went here for a meal. She had a rib eye and I had sirloin. They were cooked to perfection and the meal was a delight. I was genuinely gutted when I finished the steak! We shared a dessert too which was lovely. The venue was cosy and intimate with really nice staff. Couldn't thank them enough really. We would recommend, and we will hope to visit again if we come to York again.

Amazing steak, was all cooked perfectly to order. Sides were also good, chips and vegetables were included with the fillet steak and a peppercorn sauce. House red was a nice malbec.

Arrived here unexpectedly because Il Paradiso a couple of doors away wouldn’t close their no folding doors on a chilly early evening. We decamped here and we’re warmly greeted into a beautifully presented ambient space and seated in the window where it was nice and warm. Service was a little slow considering we were the only occupants and with a concert to attend we skipped starters which on another occasion we might have tried. A good selection. We opted to try steaks and my wife the chicken skewers. These were delicious and served also with a jacket and salad. The fillet steak was given a good rating served with jacket potato garlic mayo and pepper sauce. 2 8 oz sirloins cooked differently arrived. The medium with truffle and Parmesan chips was tender and given a good rating. Mine was meant to be medium rare but sadly was more a medium. The blue cheese sauce was flavoursome and complemented the steak well. My steak was not the tenderest but as part of a group of 4 it was the only blemish. Service was again slow when we needed to leave 2 hours in. Needs some work but they’re doing most things right

We popped in without a booking, we were lucky and they fitted us in to their already busy restaurant, lovely young waiter explained how my dish would be cooked as I wasn’t sure what the sauce was, pleased we decided to give starters a miss as portions were big. Both our mains were cooked perfectly but we couldn’t finish them. This restaurant is a little gem, all of the staff were friendly and a credit to the restaurant and the ambience was just right. The meal was reasonably priced and this small steakhouse is one we will definitely return to.

This was a great find just on the outskirts of the town centre and about a 30 second walk from our hotel. I'm not one for writing lengthy reviews so here it is in a nutshell - the steak was delicious and just melted in your mouth, the jacket potato gorgeously fluffy and the service polite and efficient. Couldn't find fault with anything.

We booked El Gaucho for our first night in York. Delicious Steak and Lamb Chops with the best Cocktails (Cuba Libre and Espresso Martini) I've ever had mixed by the lovely Anabelle. The staff in this restaurant go above and beyond for their clientele.

Fantastic evening, food was amazing with good portion sizes. We all had starters and main courses. Great atmosphere and really kind and polite staff who were very attentive.

Whenever we come to York we always try to have a meal in El Gaucho. The family-run atmosphere and absolutely amazing food makes us come back every time. Everything about this place we enjoy, the drinks, the service, and most importantly the steak!

A lovely little independent steakhouse!! I went with my wife for food on a Monday night and the place was full. Luckily we had pre booked! Couldn't fault a thing. I had a fillet and my wife had a T bone and they were up...

We ate early, so the restaurant was very quiet, no problem with that, staff were lovely, very friendly, but the food ☹ We didn’t have starters as I have a very small appetite, between us we had a steak, cooked well, nice sauce, but arrived on the plate, just a steak, no salad as expected. Ribs, nice portion, but very dry, chicken skewers, with only 4 pieces of chicken & the sauce didn’t arrive, good job I have a small appetite.

Terrible experience. Celebration meal with my husband on Saturday night 22 July at 6pm. My husbands fillet steak was full of sinu and fat. He could not eat most of this. When the waiter came to collect the plates we explained this. When we came...

Couple of days away with the other half and looked for a steak house, this was the first one to come up on a search, local to where we were staying so so was good. Service was very good, attentive and with a smile, ordered the ribs for starters (2 ribs arrived) and they were very tasty so no complaints. For a main I ordered the mixed grill, this arrived in a timely manner, enough meat and cooked to what was requested, I also ordered the malbec sauce. Ok so what's my issue, £7 for two ribs, yes they were nice but the price!!! The main? The steak was nice but just nice nothing exceptional, the malbec sauce was absolutely tasteless, £110 for two starters two mains and a bottle of wine. Would I go again? Yes but I think I would scrutinise the menu more.

Delicious food and friendly staff. My sirloin tasted amazing, beautifully seasoned. The portions were good and the price was fair. We ordered a sirloin (with chips and veg), mixed grill (with salad and chips), cider and a coke.

The food was delicious, you get what you pay for. The service was great, she gave us time to enjoy each course. My husband and I both had Sirlion but they had 3 choices of sizes which was great and the chips were really tasty too. We would definitely go again.
