Fat Hippo Edinburgh (Lane 7) in Edinburgh, City of

Thought the whole experience was very good. A cheery waitress greated me at the door and showed me to a table. The nice Geordie lad took my order without pressuring any sides or extras. The chicken burger I had was really tasty as can be seen in the picture and so was the hot honey sauce I had with the fries. All in a very good burger restaurant and would 100% return.

Don't ever use this scam they never deliver on just eat if you don't do deliveries then remove yourself from the app

I had buffalo wings and I thought they were quite good. They took a while, but eventually my order buzzer thing went off and I collected my tray. Hot, crispy, plenty sauce. One small discrepancy was that the menu stated blue cheese crumb, but the wings came with a blue cheese sauce instead.

Really sad. I didn’t know you could burn a burger like that.

Me and my wife ate here while visiting Lane 7 and we were shocked at how bad the food was. As regular visitors to our local Fat Hippo in Durham we were happy to see that there was a concession within Lane 7. The burger we received was atrocious and nothing like the normal quality of food Fat Hippo provide. The Brioche bun was rock hard, the burger was luke warm with poor quality meat. The burger was drowned in the cheapest tasting sauces and mustard. Really disgusting. We took a couple of bites of our food and left the entire meal. Total waste of money, I’ve had better quality burgers for £4 from a burger van. Looking at the reviews of this place, they seem to have major problems with this concession. Avoid at all costs and spend your hard earned money elsewhere.

Dangerous food, terrible quality and overpriced! Avoid if you care about your health and money! We ordered 2 burgers, 2 tater tots, 2 drinks and 3 sauces from which: - 3 separately paid sauces were missing - wrong drink (lemon sanpellegrino instead of blood orange) - burger buns were burned and with MOLD! - no sauce is burgers - cajun onions strings were missing - delivery was late and food was cold Besides all of that, burgers aren't that great even if they were without these problems, they are too small for the price. This restaurant is a scam!

The food was just Average, quite cold and not the best burger place in Edinburgh so definitely wouldn't be back. Unfortunately the staff didn't seem very welcoming or friendly so this was a bit disappointing. Definitely better burger restaurants in Edinburgh.

Poor quality food. Two horror chicken burgers, if it’s even possible to call those minuscule, overcooked tenders between burnt buns a burger. Tater tots were just fine. Super disappointed as I’ve ordered here before, but the drop in quality is palpable.

Service was terribly slow, starters and sides were edible but burgers were awful, tasted like grease, hard to eat and were completely overpriced. The total bill at the end is given to you with a tip included which I found ironic considering the service and the quality of food.

Fat Hippo had been recommended by friends of ours, and on arrival we were impressed by the decor. sorry to say we had a very negative experience: initially we ordered a bottle of wine with 3 glasses & a lemonade so my 16 year old daughter could have a wine spritzer with her dinner, our server advised there was no tolerance with alcohol for under 18s, I explained this was the law on the govt website & asked if the server could check with her manager, she quickly returned advising NO this was not allowed, to save my daughter any further embarrassment we ordered her a juice, we ordered a starter to share and a burger each, the starter was served around 25 mins later and it was enjoyable, however the temperature in the restersunt wasn’t, we ended up putting our coats back on while we waited for our main meal, 1hr & 15 mins after we arrived there was still no sign of the burgers and we asked our server for more drinks and to check on how much longer we were required to wait, she returned advising a further 25 mins, we had watched others who arrived after us be served before hand and because of this and no explanation for the delay we cancelled our order asking for the bill, had to wait for that too and approached the bar to pay our bill, the staff did remove our starter from the bill but sadly this will not encourage us to return.

Ordered A burger and dirty fries last night by delivery and both were stone cold when arrived as definitely weren’t freshly cooked 🤷‍♂️ Absolutely rubbish and will not be going anywhere near the place again 😡

Ordered on delivery, advertised as a Gourmet burger…was far from it. Apart the fact that it was cold, the quality and presentation wasn’t as expected. Chicken burgers were undercooked, fries were not good and too too much sauce on them. Better eat off another place if you are tourists like us.

Food was delicious and location nice

The food was not great at all! The burger was so greasy it felt like my arteries where going to clogged up with every bit. Also, was fairly prices for what it was costing £13 pounds for burger and fries. The fries where also under cooked and where so pale. The oil that they where cooked in as well must have been passed it best as the smell on the chips was not right at all. Will not be eating here and would not recommend to anyone. There is much better places to eat than here. Should have just went to 5 guys instead. Please stay away would not feed my dog this food.

Toilets absolutely disgusting and unacceptable. Put us off eating there (which we didn’t) we already had a drink, which we finished, but if we’d used the toilets first we wouldn’t have even ordered that. On the way out the chef was blowing his nose in the kitchen area, I know people need to blow their nose but seeing it over the food was just another off-putting situation. We will never return which is a shame as it has such potential and a great location, website looks exciting but was very disappointed.

Good burger but don't order the onion rings. For an upcharge (a side comes with your burger) I received THREE 6 cm diameter rings...THREE. Asked my waitress and a supervisor about that and am told both times "the kitchen controls the portion sizes." THREE very mediocre sized rings for an upcharge! I'm thinking the soup Nazi (re: Seinfeld) works the kitchen and everyone is afraid to approach him nor do they care to rectify a reasonable customer complaint. No excuse for this nonsense.

Great burger good gf options staff great awareness. Been a big fan of fat hippo since going to their Newcastle one many many years ago and really chuffed they opened in glasgow and Edinburgh highly recommend - second only to bread meats bread but cheaper!!

Chose the Fat Hippo before going to a show at the festival . Burgers were excellent along with the sides . We were full and couldn’t manage anything more . Service also first class from the young staff . We will be back . Thanks to all at Fat Hippo .

Very disappointed about this place as the photos from its social media looked so good! We ordered wachos and the buffalo chicken wings to start, the wachos looked and tasted really good however I had a bite of a chicken wing to find that it was RAW in the middle!! I made the staff aware who were extremely unhelpful and didnt give us an explanation until we paid our bill and pretty much avoided us until they wanted the bill paid. For the main we ordered a "born slippy burger" and a "Kula shaker" the beef burger tasted really good and dont have any complaints however the "kula shaker" chicken burger was really grizzly almost as if it was made from chicken thigh or some cheap chicken meat. I would recomend if you are ordering a chicken dish to check its cook properly before eating it as other reviews seem to suggest they have had similar issues with chicken.

Terrible - took a long time for them to take our order and it wasn’t busy she asked if we would like our wings first and our burgers second and we said yes, food eventually came out all at the same time, we started eating our wings which I am not sure if they were even cooked , if they were they were barely cooked could see blood, fries were cold, onion rings weren’t cooked through, nobody came back to the table to see how the meal was - were there for husbands birthday - big mistake. Very disappointed as the food in the lane 7 location was so good.

Nice staff but service incredibly slow, despite ther being several empty tables. We settled up and left after 90 minutes without having received our main course. Out neighbouring tables had similar delays. I did get my starter but left me with seriously upset stomach. My wife ordered a salad but was told after half an hour that no longer available. This is the first review that I have ever posted; I am not a serial complainer. Restaurant was just so disappointing.

Firstly the service was 10/10. From the moment you were met at the door to the moment you left the staff couldn't do enough to help. The starters were saldy average. The cheese balls were under cooked and hard in the middle. The buffalo chicken wings were also lacking buffalo sauce and blue cheese. You would expect them to be tossed in sauce but not here, all you get is a drizzle. The burger was just alright and not something i would rush back for. The toppings were measly and as an example we had 1 single stand of bacon and 1 thin slice of chorizo on a burger. The burger could also have been seasoned better as it was lacking in this department. The chicken burger seemed to be mostly buttermilk with little chicken. Comparting this to Bucks or Butta Fat Hippo are light years away. Nice environment In George Street with fabulous staff however sadly the food is streets away from many other burger establishments in Edinburgh.

After seeing great reviews to try Fat Hippo, we decided to give it a go whilst in Edinburgh. Although we hadn’t booked, we were seated quickly. Service to take our drink and food order was a little slow. However, once we got our food it did not disappoint. My husband had chicken wings to start- he said it was the best he’d ever had! I ordered cheese balls for starter but was given hash browns.. I began eating these as I hadn’t realised. The hash browns were amazing. Shortly after, the waiter came back and said he’d made a mistake with my starter and took these away and gave me the cheese balls. These were a big portion, cooked well. Amazing burgers, in the great setting of Lane 7!

Huge burger and fries for a decent price, but the burger tasted like it was missing something. Very filling and satisfying but with a bit more sauce would have been 10x better. The bar where i ordered and when i picked up the food, they were super impatient and rushing even though i was the only one in line. I would go back, but i would definitely try a different burger.

First Fat Hippo experience. Played some mini golf and bowling at Lane 7 followed by a absolutely banging burger and fries from Fat Hippo. Service was slick and were able to order at our table. Burger was juicy, well filled and not too overly priced for what you got. Sauce options were great too. Honey Buffalo was amazing.

Placed a £71 order at the bar. Admittedly we had a couple of alterations to burgers (this place LOVES pork!!) but we told the guy at the till what we wanted, he put it in and placed the order and then we paid. 10 minutes after ordering we got called over to advise that the men in the kitchen were upset of the burgers they felt should have been £1 more than we were charged. So this took several members of staff to resolve, included having to get a partial refund of our order and then going back to the bar for processing a new payment for an extra £1. This is after we had already spent over £350 in the venue. I understand (now, no idea when we ordered as it is represented as one company) that Fat Hippo and Lane 7 are only connected by venue and the tills - but then Fat Hippo you need to train your till operators better. A ‘build your own’ burger option on the menu might be much easier for everyone. As it was the delay this created (over 25 mins from ordering our ‘fast food’ to get to g it) meant that three of our party had to take theirs to go as they had a cinema reservation The food itself was decent so hence the 3 star rating rather than lower.

Proper dirty (in a good way) american burgers, very tasty, properly seasoned and crafted to perfection! Chicken burger was also Perfect in every way! Super crispy, juicy, properly fried! Will come back soon! Keep up the good stuff people!! I'm comparing this burgers to Holy Chuck in Toronto which won some years ago the 3rd best burger in the world! They are close to those ones!

Great burger and a great place to take the kids

Had never been to this establishment before but went on the recommendation of a friend. It’s got a nice communal feel to it, with big benches and seats to all sit down to. Pretty spacious and a great system where they give you a buzzer to collect your food when it’s ready. The food itself boasts massive portions and is super tasty. I’m not usually a burger fan but it was juicy and moreish. The fries were very nice as well and I highly recommend the cheese balls if you’re a fan of cheese! They have really nice cocktails too!! I highly recommend the drumstick cocktail for those who like sweeter drinks. It’s a real shame that the comments about poor delivery are letting this establishment down because the food was amazing and we didn’t have to wait much time at all on a busy Saturday afternoon.

We ordered using Deliveroo, and waited nearly 2 hours not hearing anything from them. Ordered at 20:00 and had no communication, with the restaurant closing at 22:00. If they are unable to meet the request, don’t accept the order. Would not recommend anyone waste their time with.

The man serving us was extremely rude to start off the terrible experience. The burger was dry no barbecue, also forgot items on the order. Wouldn’t recommend.

Vegans beware! And anyone else with dietary restrictions for that matter! We ordered two vegan burger meals, one with vegan loaded waffle and the other with vegan loaded hand cut chips. The hand cut chips came without any toppings, of which I had paid extra for, which was more just frustrating than anything. However the main issue was that, although the waffles did come with toppings, it was topped with REAL BACON. This was a serious error made by Fat Hippo and put us off our food completely. Especially considering the price of the food, there was obviously a serious lack of care taken with the food preparation and it felt there wasn't any respect given to me as a person. It is absolutely unforgivable. Fat Hippo should be ashamed of themselves and need to seriously consider how they operate as a company going forward.

FOOD POISONING/ POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE I recently went on a weekend trip to Edinburgh, we ate at Fat Hippo (the Last Samur-thigh chicken burger). AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS! Have tried this place 3 times. The first was great, everything arrived and on time. The second time, delivery took a while and they didn’t included dips included in the meal, they also didn’t include extra dips that I paid extra for. This was extremely disappointing because I ordered again as I enjoyed the smoked chilli jelo so much. I ordered again today, and it’s been over 1 hour and 20 minutes since I placed the order, a driver was waiting at the restaurant for a while, but it seems they gave up because Fat Hippo was taking so long. I will never order again, and I can’t cancel my order because the restaurant is apparently preparing it. EDIT: The order just arrived after almost 2 hours waiting. They sent the wrong items! I’m appalled and extremely upset. EDIT 2: Despite already emailing the email provided below during the 2 hours of waiting I endured when I placed the order, and despite having no reply to that email, I have sent another to see if they’ll reply to it.

Not anything special, if anything a disappointment. Burger was decent, could get better for cheaper. Drinks had to be payed separately from food which was a bit strange. £4 for a watered down Coke was a bit of a shock too. Most egregious was the ‘dirty fries’ which were cold and came topped with just some sauce, not exactly what I was expecting for £4.50 either. The dirty fries could constitute a crime against humanity. Service was ok, I did get a refund for the dirty fries at the time and there was no issues getting it. Service was fairly quick getting food ready too. Wouldn’t recommend, get a superior burger from Five Guys two minutes walk away for half the price.

Delivery took an hour and only half the order arrived! The chips looked nothing like the advertisement and the chicken burger was tough like it had been re heated from the previous night. Once the order had arrived we tried calling and the number online was someone else's then deliveroo had to refund our money as fat hippo marked their deliveroo status as closed afterwards. A disappointment for our Edinburgh holiday.

Eaten here twice now , both times it has been absolutely superb. The meat eaters loved their chicken and burger dishes and I had amazing vegan and gluten free meals. The chefs knowledge on both is great and I felt confident to eat here as a coeliac

Brilliant burger place at reasonable prices, my friend's been excited since they announced a local one coming, Happy to say that it's one of the best burgers I've had! The ordering is a bit funky with the little buzzers and the wooden cutlery is a bit odd but it works! I really need to commend these guys for their product advertisement in their menus, these burgers look gorgeous, the exact way they look on those menus, if you're around the Edinburgh area I totally recommend this!

Tried this place out with it being new and the burgers looking good. I ordered the Fat Hippo burger and little did I know I was going to have one of the best burgers I've ever had!! ...it was amazing and cannot be overstated! I'd fully recommend trying this place if you like burgers! The price was good and the chips come included with the burgers too which makes the price all the better. Other things to know before you go are that it is in with Lane7 which is a bowling alley that has an atmosphere of its own. They had loud music, looked like there was a DJ and the walls had all graffiti on them like a punk kind of vibe, quite cool but not to everyone's taste I'm sure. There were pinball machines and arcade games in one area and of course the bowling in a couple of areas too. The last thing to note is that you order the food for Fat Hippo from the Lane7 bar which can be quite busy, usually the queue moves relatively fast though, and you then get one of those square buzzer things, then that will flash and vibrate when your food is ready to collect at the Fat Hippo counter. Enjoy!
