This was meant to be my birthday celebration and we had invited four friends to join us. We ordered drinks to start and the staff managed to get the order wrong twice! Then we were handed the menu, and told that all but two of the starters were not available, leaving a very poor choice. and when it came to the main course half of that was not available either! i just ordered a Caesar Salad, and was presented with a huge (and off-putting) bowl of dark green leaves, hardboiled eggs, anchovies,and a pile of bacon on top.....no apparent Caesar Dressing......it was unlike any Caesar Salad that I have ever been printed with! Two of the party had a steak, but it was very stringy despite looking like a fillet. All in all, incredibly disappointing. We did not stay for dessert! I cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone.

I booked the Farthings restaurant for a surprise 80th birthday lunch for my Mum. There were 40 of us altogether, all of us were just so amazed at how beautiful the hotel and grounds are, how tasty our meals were and how efficient and helpful the staff were. My Mum just absolutely loved it. Added bonus was that there was a playing field and park literally just over the quiet road next to the Hotel which pleased the younger members of our group. Parking is also good. I would very much recommend this Hotel and restaurant.

This little hidden GEM the food was amazing melts in your mouth, would highly recommend travelling through and could not pass this one up

I had to go to Somerset as my father was ill. We thought it would be nice to stay the night at the hotel we visited on our wedding day in 1999. The room was very pretty and so tidy. Unfortunately we did not enjoy the stay as the duvet made a loud crinkly noise and kept waking us. The floor was so noisy under foot and we felt it was disturbing people underneath. We had just wanted a quiet rest during a difficult time but unfortunately we left feeling more tired and stressed.

We stayed here for three days in October and really enjoyed our stay. We were in the Garden room, which is a lovely, comfortable and welcoming room with a good bathroom with both bath and walk-in shower. We ate every night in the hotel - excellent food. Food was delicious - with some standout dishes. Service was friendly and attentive too and the final bill was very reasonable for what we had. A pleasant garden to sit in as well. I can definitely recommend it.

Recently stayed at Farthings as a couple,the staff were welcoming and friendly,super room,everything spotless and the food was to die for. Top class.

Visited this place yesterday as part of a work meeting which I did not organise and I have to say the meal was one of the best I can remember in a very long time. Really interesting flavour combinations that worked, perfectly cooked and great service.

Lovely hotel attentive and caring staff. Food delicious locally sourced. Delightful hotel room was lovely. We had our dog and he was made to feel very welcome. Would highly recommend.

We seven had the great good fortune to be the only people lunching there on what turned out to be a bright sunny Sunday. This may have made Chef's life easier when (he? she?) discovered that three of our party had special dietary requirements, but the result was a meal much enjoyed by all - not least because the lady serving us (Jo?) was unfailingly patient, polite and helpful (and smiling). Excellent value, and well worth a return visit.

A most memorable dinner for two. The food was nothing short of exquisite; the atmosphere warm, welcoming and homey; the service attentive. The pricing was very reasonable too. We will certainly be back and will be recommending to friends and family as well.

This is an excellent hotel… the staff are great, the rooms are beautifully appointed (quaintly- but excellently done). The hotel is beautiful and the food is spectacular. Cannot fault anything!!!

Visited Taunton for 4 nights at the beginning of October 2021. We eat evening meals and lunch at 2 restaurants/pubs that appear in Trip Advisors top 10. We were disappointed to say the least. We booked our final night evening meal at Farhings restaurant and despite some trepidations over some detrimental trip advisor comments, enjoyed one of the finest meals we have ever eaten. Food service and hygiene were exceptional. Will be returning soon for B&B as well. Highly recommended. Trip Advisor have gone down in my estimation.

I have never tried fig+Bacon cooked as a starter, Main course was an excellent fish, the wine for everybody was Italian: Nebbiolo d'Alba. Service was excellent.

We held a small family party at Farthings, choosing it for its personal approach and lovely food. We were delighted with the afternoon (as was the person celebrating their birthday). We used the garden as well as the dining room. Nothing was too much trouble...

This is a lovely small country hotel with a restaurant. You receive a warm and friendly greeting when you arrive and the food is delicious. We have had many a lovely steak and Sunday lunch here.

One test of a restaurant comes when the menu doesn't match the needs of the guest. Can they be flexible? Or does the bought-in pre-packed package limit what they can do? Here, everything is created expertly on the premises and it was no problem at all to negotiate a super meal for us to meet our culinary needs. Memorable!

It was like being in a comfortable dining room in a glamourous manor house, with such friendly staff, they almost seemed like family members. Nothing was too much trouble and the food was out of this world It is one of the best meals I have ever had anywhere in the UK and abroad for that matter. Loved it all!!

It's the second time we've visited the Farthings and we have thoroughly enjoyed it. The staff are very friendly and the food is just to die for. A definite favorite in the area!

We started with a very good bottle of red wine not over priced, served at the correct temperature . Our meal was very tasty well presented on hot plates , the portions were perfect. The dining room was charming nicely decorated and well furnished. The staff were very friendly and professional. I found the whole experience relaxing and most enjoyable on the palette.

Staying over in the hotel and had excellent breakfast and dinners for two days - the portions were generous and any special requests attended to - food was superb !

We had dinner twice here during a recent stay and had a very nice time. The service was good without being intrusive and the menu provided an imaginative choice using local produce wherever possible. We are not big eaters so struggled to clear our plates, but didn't really mind. The wine list provides a good range at very reasonable prices and the 5 course Valentines set menu represented excellent value for money. We would recommend this establishment and will be aiming to visit again in the future.

We stayed overnight in the hotel (which incidentally, is highly recommended) and we had booked for the Valentine's dinner. We thoroughly enjoyed the five delicious courses, including roasted pepper soup, smoked meats produced in house, guinea fowl and creme brûlée. A single red rose had thoughtfully been provided for each lady and the service was attentive but not overbearing.Nothing was too much trouble for the staff; for example, the dining room had previously had a log fire and had become rather too warm. As soon as it was mentioned, a window was opened.Would most definitely recommend this lovely restaurant and would return in a heartbeat.

A fair amount of choice, and the actual quality of the food was outstanding, Well presented and evidently some homegrown items. I felt a bit spoilt for eating out on a school night but it was well worth the experience. I spoke to a couple that were also dining and they live locally but go there for dinner occasionally. High praise indeed!

Stayed at this hotel for one night on route to Dorset, great hotel!When we arrived the check-in process was painless and quick. Rooms were nice and spacious, we had the room to the rear of the hotel overlooking part of the garden. I noticed a little dust in certain places but overall the places was clean. I did notice that at certain points there was some noise out the back which I could only think was something to do with the cooling system, but we didn't have the windows open at night and was only noticeable in the morning when we opened the windows.We had pre-booked dinner as we were arriving around 7:30pm. Food was excellent! good fine dining and good service to boot! Mostly, if not all local produce and cooked with care and passion as you could tell by the way it was presented and tasted.We retired to the bar for after dinner drinks. I cant remember what time it was but the bar closes at a certain time which wasn't an issue as we moved in to the lounge area to finish our drinks.Breakfast was excellent good full English, cereals, toast etc. although I had an incident with the cafetiere as the plunger was a bit stiff so I put more pressure and the coffee pot exploded over the table. The only negative thing about breakfast to mention is that I didn't find the waitress very welcoming.Check out was straight forward, although again the chap who checked us out never engaged in conversation, and never asked us if we had enjoyed out stay which we found strange.However we will be returning as we really enjoyed the food and our stay.

We came back for lunch in May to celebrate my birthday - we being my Golden Retriever, my 93-year-old mother and I. As ever, the welcome was warm and genuine - John is a delightful host - and it was lovely to see Marc returned after a time away. Welcome back, Marc! The food was even better than before, with a new gloss to it - mmm! It's been a busy year, so haven't managed to get back for a while, but Mother will be 94 in November, so we'll be back then if not before. As ever, we'll be spoilt for choice because everything on the menu is delicious, and so much of it is home-grown or home-reared. They also do lovely afternoon teas...

We had a wonderful meal, well served and in a very pleasant room. Three things intended as constructive criticism. Ensure Coke is not flat when served to guests. Removed dead flowers in slim green water from tables. Having put out side plates with a knife, serve some bread and butter otherwise I see no point in them being there. Would dine here again.

This was a pre-wedding get together, and this was a lovely place to have it. The menu was varied and for all tastes. Wine was chosen in advance and had time to breathe. The red was perfect with the venison.

I refer to the review by Hil15 as I was one of the party of 4 for afternoon tea.Firstly I would re-iterate our disappointment in the service we received. We were seated round a low table in the bar - not really suitable for a full afternoon tea - and being the only customers, had the impression that we were just a nuisance.However, Sean's dismissive response to Hil15's review really surprised me and I would make the following points:Para.1. He accuses Hil15 of lying. Is this how he usually treats customers?Para.3. The call to book was not made by any of our party but by an agent (see para 5 later) so this 'conversation' was not with us. The sandwiches were indeed very good, but in any unknown situation one would expect one non-meat choice to cater for all tastes.Para.4. The young lady was definitely not "in view" the whole time and she definitely did not ask if we wanted more tea or coffee.Para.5. To be told that we should be grateful for a bargain is again not what I would expect from a quality establishment. Yes - it was a lot cheaper than the normal price but this was because we had a voucher for a "free tea for two" from an insurance company.Presumably you take part in these offer schemes to advertise your restaurant, but on this occasion the effect has been that I will never visit again.

Also stayed at this hotel in a very quite village 5-6 miles from Taunton. Beautiful gardens, small and friendly restaurant, nice breakfast. Bad point no free Wii -Fi. And beds very hard, although room lovely.

We enjoyed a lovely birthday lunch for eleven people at Farthings. We found the staff polite, attentive and helpful. The food was great and we were all accommodated on a large table in very nice surroundings.

We were very much looking forward to a special tea at Farthings Restaurant.What a disappointment!The four of us were given our table - a coffee table in the bar area. The tea was just adequate. We had to order an extra sandwich as there was not one suitable for vegetarians. For this we were charged an extra £6.95 for one round of egg Mayo.We were left alone at our coffee table. There were no other customers.We were not once asked do we need anything or was everything ok.Score zero for customer service.Farthings is an expensive place to eat and we all expected better.

Had a great meal here on Sunday evening. The food was excellent. The restaurant is small and set in a lovely hotel with a small bar area. The gardens are really pretty at the front and rear of the hotel. The staff were extremely helpful and polite. Set in a small village out of the way very quiet and relaxing. Looked so nice we would think about booking to stay at the hotel for a future visit.

The Farthings just oozes old world charm and friendliness along with excellent service. The rooms may vary in size but are of a good quality and standard. The bar and dining room have a small hotel charm, the bar is well stocked and the food is excellent. Service is supplied by attentive and polite youngsters, the manager has chosen well to staff this delightful hotel. This is our second visit and it will not be our last. Well done all.

The beef was incredibly tender and the red wine perfectly matching. I also felt very welcomed by the staff who were always there to help and were very friendly. The crumble for dessert was the perfect end to the tasty meal.

during our stay we had a lovely three course meal on Saturday night. The starter was very good. I then ordered beef for main which was deliciously tender. Finally they had run out of the dessert we had ordered however, they offered us a lemon moose alternative which was very nice. Overall we were very happy.

I came down and stayed in the hotel for the weekend. I had dinner on the Friday night which was excellent. The breakfast was great too with a full English and a good array of fruit and yoghurt. I had dinner at the hotel on the Saturday evening which was a three course meal which again was greatly presented and delicious too.

When booking for our wedding anniversary, it might have been an act of kindness t warn us that we would be dining alone, as the hotel was booked up by 20 odd guests on a work related outing. They all remained in the foyer and lounge. The waiting staff were courteous and friendly, doing their best in difficult circumstances.My starter of "home cured Parma ham with a poached duck egg and new season asparagus was delicious but not Parma ham. It was pancetta/streaky bacon. I mentioned this to the waiter as they could get into serious trouble using the term Parma ham. I heard nothing more. The beef stroganoff was tasty but very orange and the beef was very solid, as if they has used leftover roast beef. Luckily there wasn't a great deal of that, but lots and lots of mushrooms.Our overall impression was that we were a bit of a nuisance with 24 twenty year olds to cope with. This came not from the waitress who was doing her best by us. We have visited before and generally been very pleased, hence our booking,but corners are being cut and what was a treat once felt like a bit of a rip off.

A warm welcome and the most helpful and happy staff greet you upon arrival. We booked for 6 people and they managed to squeeze in 5 extra people. Service was fantastic and very helpful and the food was just delicious. We had a two course menu but all of us had to leave room for the deserts, meals came really hot, quick and well presented too. We were a handful and were having a great time but the staff manged to stay professional and focused. We will definiatly be back, well if we are allowed ;-)

We recently returned to Farthings and enjoyed another excellent stay. The food is top class and the chef had just introduced a new menu with plenty of choice and everything looked great - we will have to return to sample some of the other dishes.We stayed in the Bay room - A lovely spacious room but be aware that the en-suite bathroom is "upstairs" reached via a spiral staircase which may not suit everyone.We will return.

Visited farthings for my dad's birthday and from the moment we walked in we felt very welcome and the warm fire was a very nice touch especially with the terrible weather outside. Both my dad and step mum are visually impaired and the staff could not of been more helpful and accommodating. The food was unbelievable with good variety making it hard to chose between the wonderful dishes and a vast wine list. Will definitely be visiting again!

It's been awhile, but managed a stop off at my favourite hotel and restaurant in the West Country this week. As always greeted on arrival by a friendly face and although dining alone was not placed in a corner, I had a table by the window with a view over the floodlight garden, anyway down to the food I chose a Thai inspired sea bass dish which was delicious and full of real flavours of Thailand such as chilli and lemongrass. For my main course I opted for the Chefs marinated goose breast what an absolute delight with its rich game flavours and a rich jus with a hint of juniper... Well cooked al denote fresh vegetables to compliment a total delight the whole meal with expedient service, thank you Farthings I will not leave it so long to visit next time.

We attended our group Christmas Supper here last evening and they looked after us so well. The food was wonderful, tasty, hot and served very well. The staff are almost seemless and everything is so well organised. We cannot recommend The Farthings Hotel enough and would hope to return with the group again next year. I'm not one to rave but this place is a hidden gem. Don't all rush, though, as i din't want it to be fully booked for next time! Savour the pleasure, take your time before booking and at all costs avoid booking early February 2016 when i am due to return. After all anticipating a treat is all part of the experience

We stayed at the hotel and ate in the restaurant both mornings of our stay, and in the evening on Saturday.The breakfast was fantastic - a big range of cold, continental in addition to a full English breakfast. The scrambled eggs (from the ducks in the garden) were the best eggs I've ever had! The three course meal on the Saturday night was also fanatic; the portion sizes were perfect and the flavours magnificent. The staff were attentive, friendly and professional at all times.Would recommend the restaurant highly!

Wanted somewhere special to take family members for dinner. Farthings was that somewhere. Entering through the front door we were greeted by a lovely fire and attentive staff. We spent some time in comfortable chairs making our choices from the menu and then were shown into the beautiful dining room.The food was devine (especially the double chocolate torte). We were not rushed and felt extremely well looked after.Farthings is an absolute gem and we will certainly be back.Thank you to everyone at the hotel who made our evening one to remember.

I often come here with Tia, my Golden Retriever and my nearly 93-year-old mother. We're quite a handful, but John and his staff always make us feel welcome and nothing is too much trouble. The food is superb and the Sunday lunch deal remarkably generous. They do lovely al fresco afternoon teas in Summer, as well. Altogether, a delightful experience. Thank you!

Was delighted to see that not only was the food well presented, prepared and tasty, but the portion sizes were generous. Both the meat and vegetarian options were equally as delicious with the Creme Brûlée, made to almost perfection, the obvious choice for desert.

This was one of the best.Great menu with lots of choice, all cooked to perfection. John's obvious passion and pride in using his own and local produce, together with a great chef is a winning combination. Lovely waiting staff,attentive without being obtrusive.

We really enjoyed having our evening meals at Farthings Hotel when we recently stayed for a long weekend with our family party. The menu has lovely choices. One evening we had marinated roast duck, reared in the hotel garden!, that tasted so superb, and a lovely selection of vegetables. Other members of our party chose the Hake which was also really delicious. There is a good selection of starters and sweets and I particularly loved the Crepe with Cinnamon ice-cream and a delicious sauce. Afterwards we had coffees and teas by the log fire in the cosy lounge and some after dinner drinks. All very relaxing.

Stayed at this hotel and dined here in the evening twice. Attentive staff, lovely ambiance and delicious selection of foods. Very nice to see that many items on the menu have been grown/ sourced locally too!

We had a wonderful three course meal at The Farthings. The beef simply melted in the mouth. The staff were very attentive. Traditional English food done very well.

We had a three course evening meal which was superb. The staff were on form, fast and efficient. The main was a beautiful slow cooked beef cooked in red wine sauce which melted in the mouth and dessert was creamy creme brulee with fresh berries. Could not have enjoyed a better night.

Visiting friends in the Taunton area and they treated us to a surprise meal at this superb reastaurant with fantastic selection of food and excellent service. Will hope to return again and highly recommend to others

Excellent evening meal, a lovely waitress who was very charming, it's worth taking your time over the wine menu as well.Breakfast was brilliant as well; it's worth being specific about what you want. A vast array of cereals and juices was more than enough for any discerning taste plus the scrambled eggs and salmon on toast was splendid.

I took my parents here as we are looking for a venue for their 50th wedding anniversary family lunch. The menu was very tasty and suitable for all tastes including me as a vegetarian. It was nice to have a choice of two starters. There was free-range chicken, beef, fish and a veggie option on the menu. My parents really enjoyed their food leaving clear plates all round. The desserts were lovely too. The waitress was very patient and efficient as my dad has dementia and not the easiest of customers! If you like a light airy but with a cosy country house feel this restaurant in the hotel is definately worth trying. I've given Farthings Restaurant 5/5 - but there are a couple of things that would make it even better. My mum liked the jus with her beef - but it was extremely strong flavour wise and a bit overpowering after the first few mouthfuls. She suggested a jug of home made gravy would have made it perfect - as this would have enabled her to dilute the flavour to taste. Being a vegetarian I am used to having a choice of one main - and always hope it is tasty, well thought out and not a basic token gesture for us veggie sorts! Many places always do the 'usual' veggies food like veg lasagne, bean burger, veggie pastie type thing, mushroom risotto, mushroom stroganoff etc so it would be great to have something as good as your meat choices. For a sunday lunch I love having roast potatoes, vegetables and something 'roasted' or something which would go well with roasties - not forgetting veggie gravy. Hopefully next time I come (next Month hopefully) there will be something different to the mushroom stroganoff! All in all a very lovely Sunday lunch and definately would recommend!

Service is excellent and you will not be disappointed by the food. menu not extensive but everything is delicious.

We went here as we wanted somewhere to eat on a sunday evening without going to the pub we seem to frequent every other weekend. The service was very welcoming and attentive without being invasive. The food was lovely. Only criticism would be the lamb could have been a little more rare. Thoroughly enjoyed he evening and would definitely return.

Ate here recently with friends, after recommendation. Warmly welcomed by a friendly young man. Food was expensive and we've certainly had better. Lamb chops overdone after marinating, apple tart tatin flat and overcooked apple, treacle tart dry. Fish dish was enjoyed, and all vegetables.The bill was a surprise - 4 meals, 2 courses + various drinks but 2 drivers and no bottles of wine = £140. Overall, nice location and environment but disappointing food and expensive.
