A lovely quant pub with friendly staff, but a little disappointed with the food, small details but ordered the breaded mushrooms to start, but they didn't come sprinkled with the fresh chives as stated on the menu, and had to send my steak back as undercooked, and then my chips weren't as hot, I think fresh chips would have been better.

Popped in for Sunday lunch without booking. Not a problem. Ordered beef roast and decided to go large for an extra £2. Still a reasonable £15.95. Plate turned up absolutely heaving ! Superbly cooked tasty veg, I lost count how many, and an extremely generous serving of excellent beef. So large it actually beat me, which does not often happen. Two pints of cider, an excellent, light, not too sweet jam sponge with custard and a pot of tea finished off a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. The only feedback, and this is not a criticism, just an observation, mashed and roast potatoes were a little too much. Cauliflower or cabbage would have been ideal instaed of two potatoes. Many thanks for the stuffing, as an unrequested but most welcome substitution for the horseradish I did not want. Will defo go again. Within walking distance of home, result.

We live in Spencer's Wood and were desperate for a takeaway fish and chips but didn't feel like travelling too far. We decided to give The Farriers Arms a go and were pleasantly surprised. Paul had our takeaway ready in 15 minutes! He was so polite and helpful. I can happily say it's the best fish and chips we have had in years. Great chunky chips, good sized tasty battered cod and an especially impressive tartar sauce. Thanks again - we will see you soon!

Been ere many times as I used to live in Spencer's Wood, now I just work close by, but over the years this place has always been great, quite a small little place but it doesn't need to be bigger, it has a nice garden, lots of parking, the food has always been great and there is a great selection of drinks at the bar, it's definitely one of the best pubs in within many miles, and definitely better than at least most of the pubs in the centre of Reading. So if you are looking for a nice down to Earth pub, with great food, priced well yet with generous portions, or just want a nice cold pint in a nice sunny garden, or if you want to take the family out for a nice meal, this pub covers all of that and more!

Just happened on this place and although the menus were very varied our food was rather lacking in flavour; it was well just bland to look at and to the taste. With just a bit more effort and imagination and perhaps some herbs and spices this could be a very good place to visit. We'll probably visit again if only to see if other things on the menu taste better.

Popped in for an evening meal. Ordered the Sirloin steak, cooked "medium" and unfortunately it came more well done than medium. The plates were too small for the amount of food, as the chips kept falling onto the table, which I might add was so very sticky (the table), Maybe some hot soapy water might solve that problem? So hence the slightly disappointing result.

However as we are fed up with the indifferent and expensive results since it was taken over we thought we would give the Farriers Arms a try at lunchtime. We stopped unexpectedly as time for lunch was passing and we were some distance from our destination. We found this small pub very quiet so worried about its food reputation. We need not have done so as the food was very adequate and as good as pub food generally is. I enjoyed a very nice meat pie and the others in my party were very satisfied with theirs - the gammon was a bit salty for my taste but my husband enjoyed it. The pub was a bit soulless and a bit cold but the cost was average and the staff friendly. Not somewhere I would visit regularly but it met our needs.

Me and my colleagues generally go to the Farriers Arms for lunch most Friday's as the food is generally to a very good standard and the value is great. What is exceptional value is that they do a three course option which is £4.50 for one course, £6.50 for two courses or £8.50 for three courses, the food is always freshly prepared and comes out very promptly which is great if time frames are tight.I personally selected a Burger from the three course menu at £4.50, I asked for cheese on the burger, transforming it in to a cheeseburger and as always they were very accommodating (not sure they charged me for the cheese which was good). The chips were fresh, they have an option to swap out the chips for sweet potato fries which a lot of my colleagues do and any salad that they serve is always fresh. The beers are kept well, the staff are friendly hence why we continue to go back. The only gripe I have is that the portions are sometimes a bit small, however they have recently introduced freshly baked Pizzas which are made on site, these are great value at between £8.50 - £9.50 (I think) so when I have been really hungry I have ordered one of these (apparently they are also available for takeaway as well). If you are in Spencers Wood, Reading and fancy a quick bite to eat or a pint then it is worth popping in. I keep telling my Wife about how much I have enjoyed my lunch when I get in on Friday and she gets rather jealous, especially when I had their Apple Pie and Custard the other week.

Been here four times recently and looking forward to going back. The service is both professional and friendly. Inside its small and cosy and at back there is decent place to sit out. The food is not expensive but is always hot and well presented. The themed nights and the half price offers are genuine and a real attraction. I don't drink much, but the cider is excellent, Thatchers I think. This is my first choice every time for a meal out. They are a welcome part of the community.

Visited on 23/04, on way back home from Virginia Water. While my overall thoughts on the pub are positive, there are a few criticisms. Parked in Cark park to the rear, outside are needs some work, even if it's just to empty the bin and sweep up cigarette butt's, cut the grass, just make the place look a little more loved and cared for. Toilets were not the best, but have read the place is due a refurb soon, so hope the above remarks will be remedied. That said, when inside, we were delighted to find a proper community pub that was both dog and child friendly. Local customers were chatty and friendly. I apologise to the person who made the comment about noisy kids, could have been us! My friends 2 girls were playing with the kids of some regulars. Food was not fantastic, but did what it said on the tin, and certainly nothing to complain about. Just good honest pub grub. If you want something fancy, go somewhere fancy. It ticked all the boxes for us though. Would definitely visit again if in the area.

Called in here with two family members for lunch. Friendly welcome. Ordered food which arrived promptly and was very nice. However, it was a cold day and there was no heating on so, having removed my coat I felt the need to put it back on. Eventually took a trip to the ladies - shame on you! There were two cubicles; on one the door wouldn't close at all leaving a gap of about two inches so I rejected that one. In the other cubicle the door wouldn't lock! The paintwork was scratched and dirty. I can only assume that a) trade is poor so they are not bothering to decorate as the place will soon be closing or b) that just don't care! Whichever it is we won't be returning!

We wanted to take my mum out for dinner on 22nd March, the week after Mother's Day, as we were in Reading for the half marathon, so we needed somewhere local, open quite late, as we didn't know what time we would be getting together to eat.We chose the Farriers Arms on this basis, it's not far and was open until 10pm. There's no need to book in advance. We arrived around 5:45pm, which was after the Sunday Lunch rush (12pm-2pm), so the pub was very quiet, which was fine by us.The full menu (not available to view online) was available, including a couple of portions remaining of their Sunday Lunch menu.I opted for a zingy lime jelly relish burger, upgrading to sweet potato fries. This was very tasty, though I felt it should've had more 'zing' in the relish, as it wasn't quite as flavoursome as I was expecting. Mum chose the cauliflower cheese, with salad and baguette bread, which she enjoyed. Husband decided to go for their Sunday Best lunch, which is a roast dinner with all three meats included. This came out on a big plate, though that didn't last long before it was all polished off!Time for puddings, I had the Lemon Curd sundae, which was a limited edition pudding, with lemon sorbet. Very refreshing and zingy!Husband chose the Rhubarb Crumble, which he enjoyed.Mum chose their Crownie; a brownie with a cookie base. While mum did enjoy her pudding the base of it was very tough and even I struggled to break it up for her!The staff was friendly and very helpful when they were asked questions. We did not experience any issues while we were there, even though we were outside of their usual Sunday trading time. The pub has some parking at the rear, where you can enter the pub without needing to walk around, however please be aware that this entrance is also where smokers stand so you might find that unpleasant when entering or leaving the pub. This is a local pub and the food/atmosphere matches up to that expectation, which is good for this little village just outside of Reading.I recommend a visit.

Cross between greasy spoon and cafe with specials, and a warzone between management and locals, havnt been for a while but OMG!Seems landlady and landlord are on a time limited special of alienating locals by barring them for least little things, attitude and arrogance by the pint, food disappointing, service and clean tables and disgusting condiments, no soap or toilet rolls in ladies, ugh!Locals are loudly vocalizing with complaints about landlady , food has no passion and is in the main ding food (taste the frozen) or greasy, a la' weird taint'.So we gathered as Is the main smokers topic of conversation, that the ladylady with a face like Atila the hun, have a new outside catering venture and are running this venture into ground, well guys if thats the case fab job as The Farriers Arms was never going to be mitchalin star material but it did have an amusement quality and honesty which was marred the night we were in barring someone for your kid running into them and the poor guy only questioned the safety aspect, which for the record We felt was a valid point and certainly could have been dealt with far more diplomacy but no public barring and humiliation was the order of our visit! Avoid at all costs, as they obviously do not want your custom but are happy to smile at the till!!

It's a good spot for a local beer, screens up for sport etc. They've got tables outside and a covered little yard, shame it doesn't have a bit more of a secure garden to be able to bring your dog or kids for a meal etc.
