F Cooke Pie And Mash in East Hertfordshire

Although my previous visit was some while ago, this beautifully-maintained venue has not changed. The environment, the service, and the food on my recent visit was as good as ever.

A very nice lunch with friends. Lovely setting and the team were very welcoming friendly and professional. Excellent Chicken Foie Gras starter and super fish pie with panko squid and prawn. Nice cheeseboard, crackers were a bit of a letdown as we expected something a bit more bespoke for a venue of this class. Mens toilet out of order, ok it happens, but no hand towels or means to dry hands, which again surprising as everything else was as you'd expect. Overall a lovely venue and we had a great time. Awful service during my dads 80th birthday celebration. When we booked a table we told them we would only be having drinks and a few bowls of chips. They told us we could have a table near the bar. When we arrived for our booking, they showed us to a table at the back of the pub which was laid out for a full meal. I explained we wouldn't need menus only to be told "in future, just so you know, you can't book these tables for drinks". I explained that we hadn't and that we were supposed to be sitting near the bar. I then I got told "we had to move you to accommodate other customers". So they moved us and then told us off because they didn't want us on the tables they gave us 🤔 Poor attitude I thought. Then we ordered 5 bowls of chips and drinks. When the waiter came over to give us the chips he noticed my kids had a bag of sweets on the table. He told us the kids couldn't have the sweets in his restaurant and we had to put them away. Absolutely bizarre attitude, as if a bag of sweets somehow affects their business? We spent £92 so not the smallest amount, we got a Crappy attitude from their staff. I have used this place regularly until today. Won't step foot In there again. I will head somewhere that appreciates their customers instead.

Brilliant pub with great atmosphere and food. Staff were very friendly and the service was superb. They hosted a large group of walkers (12 eating in the pub and more coming for drinks after their picnics) and had boot shields available at the doors.

Decent vegan options for a small town like this. Atmosphere was pretty mild but staff were quite friendly. Kitchen making horrible noises so I advise not to get a booth near there if you’re sensitive. Near the main train station so it’s a good place to stop off and it’s just off the towns high street. I imagine it gets loud in the evenings
