Saw this place a few weeks ago whilst walking on the canal, read some reviews and thought yeah why not . Popped in this morning, first impressions a really welcoming atmosphere, lovely and warm , staff were friendly and helpful. Busy when we were there which is always a good sign but even so our small breakfasts didn’t take too long to arrive . Clearly using butchers meat for our breakfast and despite us opting for small breakfasts there was plenty and it was really nice . For drinks we chose latte and an instant coffee both were really nice and brought just before our meal . £13.00 was the total for 2 breakfast and 2 drinks which considering the quality of the meal is great value . Overall a lovely experience, great value for money, go check it out …

First visit and had a small breakfast which was more than big enough with good quality products. Including toast and a drink it was less than six pounds. Cafe in a stove factory and also dog friendly. Will certainly return

Revisited this cafe after not having been for a while (just been too busy). Obviously doing a takeaway menu only at the moment, though a few tables still available outside. Takeaway menu is perfect - exactly what walkers along the canal or local business employees will want. Service is fast and friendly and food is well presented, good value and tasty. We had bacon and sausage sandwiches and they were brill. If you are passing well worth a visit. Or just go anyway.

Our favourite local cafe. The best coffee in barnoldswick (and local area). The food is lovely, the cakes are delicious - all made on Esse cookers! The lemon drizzle cake is the best!! Unusual small café located in part of the Esse factory by the Leeds Liverpool canal in Barnoldswick. Not easy to find unless you are a local!Helpful, friendly staff but a fairly restricted menu which could be easily extended. Food service a bit slow although no problem with food quality.Well worth visiting again!

Whilst walking along the Leeds to Liverpool canal my husband, dog and myself cane across this lovely little cafe. We only stopped as it was 'dog friendly' which is massively important to us owning a dog. Anyway it was toastie and warm inside, if a little busy. Lady behind the counter was very friendly. We had soup & sandwich (delicious), sandwich & salad, coffee and tea for around £15.00. This is what we would normally pay for lunch out so wasn't unhappy about price. Everything tasted good and loved the tea leaves in the teapot instead of teabag (nice touch). We did feel that the toilets were shabby if we had to be critical and cakes were expensive. If cheaper we would of had one each but hey hoy. We will visit again when out walking in the area. Keep the dog friendly idea going, more establishments need to follow your lead.

From the start that this great cafe was opened, I have supported the business for the best cooked breakfast in the area. However, several weeks ago, the menu offering changed, and guess what, they no longer offer a full breakfast. Instead, we find bread rolls with sausage, bacon or egg, and other similar items, all of which appear to be similarly priced to the full breakfast my wife and I loved so much.

I have reviewed Esse Cafe once before when everything was spot on. I ordered a bacon sandwich and was disappointed that they no longer served it on the gorgeous granary bread plus they had changed the tasty bacon. The lady assured me it was very good. So I went with it. Served on particularly bland toasty sourdough the bacon was equally unappetising and I thought it was quite fatty. My husband had a piece of custard tart which looked better than the ones I bake, but the custard was very solid and not a nice taste. The pastry was the best bit. Just short of £15 with 2 pots of tea. Shan't rush back in a hurry.

I brought my family, some of whom have been with me before, for an early lunch but was very disappointed with the new menu. There was no children's menu and menu too trendy for families. We ended up having cheese toasties but the salad of green leaves was tired and not even dressed. The cakes looked as good as ever and the staff lovely but toasties over-priced and won't go again with children.

We have been regular customers of the cafe, inviting friends and recommending the service. However on our recent visit we found the new menu to be very limited and certainly not child friendly. The bacon sandwiches were small, the collar bacon was fatty and unappetising, whilst the sourdough bread was dry. Consequently the portion wasn’t an issue as I left half of the sandwich. My husband ordered the poached eggs which were over cooked. All in all very disappointing meal. This was an excellent cafe when it first opened and has gradually deteriorated over the last 12 months. This new menu and price increase will certainly not encourage new business in Barnoldswick. I sincerely hope they review the menu again

This cafe is in the perfect location for a nice stop off during (or after) a lovely walk along the canal. It has recently been closed for refurbishment and it is a smart and clean cafe. We ordered two toasties which were £7 each and felt that perhaps a total of £14 was a bit steep for the two slices of seeded bread, filling and a handful of watercress. The cakes are lovely and we will pop in for a cake again as that was the best bit. Altogether for 2 toasties, 2 cans of pop and 2 cakes it was over £25.

Esse is very modern and comfortable, set in a victorian mill. The staff are an asset they are friendly and helpful .The food is freshly cooked on order and the cakes are made on site and lovely. But one very wet day I had ordered food and decided to cancel due to the amount of wet, smelly dogs 8 in all.The fires were on so the smell of them was not conducive to a full english. There is a second room with stone floor and in my opinion would be better to have animals in there. As some tables are long sharing tables it just didnt seem suitable.Went in again today and had same thing happen someone wanting to share their dog yuk. That said if theres no dogs its one of the best cafes in Barnoldswick .

You'd never expect to find such a superb cafe in the middle of an industrial estate - but that's just what this is. No wonder the locals call in! Have visited the industrial estate on business twice now and each time have paid a visit to this beautifully-run place. Some reviews say seating not quite right - I thought just right for what it was, and we were perfectly comfortable. The coffee's lovely but the tea is the best ever. You get at least 4 cupsful out of your individual teapot, and it's proper loose-leaf tea! Yesterday 18th March we had a baked spud (great for someone who's recently been to the dentist - me) and my partner had the beef/onion/gravy in super sort of bread. Both meals wonderful. Previous visit we had huge slices of home-made cake which were the tastiest ever. Service swift. Atmosphere warm, cosy and quirky. I love quirky! And if others can't do with the occasional dog calling in - tough. I love dogs and good to see them being allowed in to sit quietly. Useful toilets in the corridor. Whole job lot just great. Will certainly be having a road trip to revisit. Can recommend, as it's so well-run. Only thing is - it's just a little bit pricey. However, well worth the money in my opinion.

This modern cafe has it just right. The food is well cooked, the staff are pleasant and nothings too much trouble. The building is an old mill and has plenty of esse cookers and fires on making it a cosy place to have Sunday brunch. The cakes look really good. The beans are made in homemade sauce my husband enjoyed them while I prefer heinz. Adding extra items such as the tasty black pudding is a good idea but 2 slices would be better.Only downside for me was that dogs are allowed in and on a rainy day the smell of there wet coats made us leave on one occasion. But lots of cafes seem to allow animals in now so just have to pick a table away from them .

The Esse Stoves Cafe is very local to me but I hadn't visited until last week whilst walking the Leeds/Liverpool Canal. For some reason I wasn't expecting it to be up to much but what a surprise. It was busy with people/cyclists sat outside in the sunshine and when we went inside it was very busy. A lovely display of cakes and cookies etc and a nice menu including jacket potatoes, soups and quiches. We opted for tea and cakes which were as tasty as they looked and were served by a very pleasant lady. A must visit if you are out on the canal or in Barlik!!! On a cold day walking the Leeds Liverpool canal from Gargrave to Burnley we stumbled on this gem. Set in the Esse factory (manufacturers of wood-burning stoves) the cafe decor is "1980 works canteen" The welcome friendly and homely, the food simple but very very good. Muddy boots, dogs, children are are all welcome, the woodburning stoves (yes more than one) are only outshone by the warmth of the staff. And best of all the bill at the end of the meal was surprisingly small. If you are in the Barnoldswick area are this place is not to be missed.

The cafe was very busy as it was a glorious sunny November day and lots of people (dogs allowed in too) were taking advantage of calling in after a walk along the canal, although I suspect many were returning regulars. We were served by a charming young man with pleasant conversation and although we had to wait for our food it was well worth it. I can recommend the prawn sandwiches, served on a delicious malted brown teacake. The prawns were huge and the teacake tasty. Nicely presented on a slate with crisps, a little salad and coleslaw and served with ‘proper’ tea in a tea pot and all at a very reasonable price. Definitely one to return to.

The food is fairly good but in my opinion over priced for the portion sizes and taste compared to some other local places. It is all served very nicely/looks great so if you want to go somewhere to get a bit dressed up and have a fancy meal/some cocktails then it might work for you. For me I still can't say it is worth the price you pay. The service is good with friendly staff but not excellent, It can take a while to get someone's attention. The venue is lovely and has a nice atmosphere. Just because it is not for me doesn't mean it won't be for you. Give it a try :) Its always a good thing to try and suppport local businesses.
