Took the meal deal for a light supper. The Espelette unfortunately lacks atmosphere and combines this with a very expensive wine list- possibly because it is part of the hotel. The sea bass was a little dry and the staff were not particularly attentive. Would not return.

We booked it online, got a completely different menu at the table but could select from it so no problem. Braised ox cheeks were particularly tasty but the chocolate mousse was very average. Presentation was nice, service ok, had to ask twice to bring a drink but other than that everything was fine. The restaurant is dated, the other guests were in their mid fifties, which is obviously not a problem but I wouldn't recommend this place to younger people for atmosphere as there are far better restaurants in the immediate area. Funnily enough they served my main and dessert in the same type of plate! Have they run out of desert plates?

I am a big fan of the Connaught and Espelette, in my opinion, is never likely to be a let down. The afternoon tea room is light and airy, with floor to ceiling windows - when booking ask for a table near the window. The afternoon tea itself is on the traditional side, however the quality of food is nothing short of outstanding. The scones are perfect, the jam incredibly tasty and the little pastries are beautifully done. The service is professional and attentive - frankly the serving staff are a class act - not intrusive but always happy to oblige.I would heartily recommend this place - but remember - a table in the window is best!

Had afternoon tea at the Connaught Hotel, 5 people. Room was hot and stuffy; Dyson fans are pathetic, ineffective and just downright cheap. Surely aircon can be afforded? Service was very poor for a place purporting quality. In general, it was dismally unattentive and apathetic. First waiter in particular was snooty, unfriendly, slow and unhelpful. Wish I knew his name as he should be sacked. Encountered 4-5 waiters throughout the meal and maybe that was part of the problem. Food was fine but if you're paying top price then overall experience should be so much more and so much better. Would not return as there are many other better places in London to enjoy afternoon tea.

Chose this hotel from good reviews found on TA for our afternoon tea. We were seated promptly at a window table so we could see all the coming and goings of Mayfair. We chose the Champagne option, which was a good choice as we then had several more glasses to accompany our tea! The sandwiches were tasty and plentiful, also the beautiful scones and cakes. We could have as much as we liked (and we did!) and at no time were we felt rushed. Our servers were extremely polite and helpful, engaging in conversation with us and attending to our every need! After we finished out tea (by which time we were extremely full!) we asked if we could finish our Champagne at the bar, which was duly accepted. Even though we were so full, we still got brought complimentary olives and crisps which we had regretably no room for! The only slight disappointment for me was that there was no live music which I thought there would be. I was told by our server that this only takes place at the weekend. However, this aside, I cannot recommend the Connaught enough for afternoon tea, and we both decided it was well worth the price.

My wife and I visited Espelette at The Connaught Hotel for lunch on 18th August. We had booked the three course set lunch with a glass of champagne for £35 per person, which we found to be very good value. The ambiance in this restaurant was a little downbeat, as only two tables, including ours, were occupied for the majority of the time we were present. The quality of the food was very good, and the service offered by the young French waiter, Vincent, was impeccable. I had read some earlier reviews which alluded to set menu diners being treated as second class citizens, but I found no evidence of this, even though I declined bottled water in favour of the free variety straight from a tap.My only criticism would be the price of the cappuccino we ordered at the end of the meal. It was served in elegant, but rather small, bone china cups, as would be expected of a five star hotel. What was not expected was the price: £7.50 per cup!

I experienced the Connaught's afternoon tea yesterday and felt I needed to write a review. We were greeted promptly and efficiently and given a choice of two tables to sit at. Our server was professional, knowledgeable and friendly. However, as someone who has no choice but to eat Gluten Free food I was extremely disappointed. Having had afternoon tea at Claridges I was expecting a similar standard in food - how wrong was I. The bread was hard and dry and the scones like cricket balls. I didn't complain, you may ask why, in my eyes I am sure the chef did his best and I couldn't see what I would have achieved by complaining. But if Claridges can produce bread and scones that taste "normal" then surely lessons need to be learnt at the Connaught. I must commend the selection of cakes, these were fabulous and our server did get me a second plate when I requested as they were fab. As for a second round of sandwiches and scones ... no thank you! Based on Gluten Free, I would not recommend or return.

I had tea at the Connaught with a friend during a visit to London this spring. The service was great and the tea was excellent, but I don't feel that I can give the experience five stars because there is such a vast disparity in the quality of the different tables. The restaurant had reserved all the good tables alongside the windows and wanted to seat us right next to the entrance of the kitchen, with waiters constantly going back and forth right next to us. This wasn't exactly the tranquil experience we had been hoping for. The hostess eventually moved us to a large booth in the interior room, but that entirely missed out on the view. At any high-end restaurant, it's always disappointing when some of the tables detract from the overall experience. However, the service throughout our afternoon tea was otherwise excellent, as was the tea itself and the food. The server was also happy to offer us seconds of any items that we requested.

My husband and I, with two friends, were staying in Mayfair for the weekend and we booked for afternoon tea in advance as a treat. The surroundings were luxurious and we were seated at a table by the window over-looking the fountain. Staff were helpful, pleasant and efficient and made us feel welcome.Plenty of finger sandwiches arrived with a good choice of filling. We were offered more and enjoyed a further selection. Two warm scones each, plain and fruit, arrived along with three choices of jam and clotted cream. The other smaller cakes were like miniature works of art and were all very different. We had a dilemma deciding which were our favourite!! We could only manage one scone each so the waiter boxed them up for us and we enjoyed them on the train home where they tasted just as fresh.Lots of types of tea were available and the waiter topped up our drinks for us. As a non-tea drinker I chose the fresh mango juice which was delicious. We enjoyed the peaceful surroundings and people watching in this lovely environment and would recommend it.

Nice elegant room, had to wait a while sometimes to catch a waiter. The quality of the food is superb, and would be a fine portion size if it was part of a five or seven course tasting menu, not as two courses for the set menu. Fine if you are on a diet or have a small appetite. Not so sure about £6 for a coffee or a bottle of water, but I guess I am not the target client who is probably a hotel guest.

We went with friends (he's a great wine buff) and we were made to feel like we owned Mayfair. Sitting on the 'terrace' overlooking the street is quiet enough to hear yourself speak and lively enough to be really enjoyable. The service cannot be faulted. It was our second visit and on each occasion the staff trod that fine line of formality that is not stuffy but welcoming. The presentation is excellent and the food itself superb - two of us had cauliflower soup with a cauliflower cous cous (which was so good that it had all gone before I had a chance to taste it!) while two of us had the excellent crab and water melon. For the main course two had fish and two had lamb (I was relying on looking up the precise details online but they change the menu daily). We stuck to the set menu - it is generous, very fairly priced and (most important to my mind) served with as much style and distinction as if we had just blown the budget. I really cannot recommend it too highly. We drank champagne to start and a very pleasant (slightly chilled) Barbera d'Alba. My wife had a fruit cocktail that was so delicious that she asked to that the cocktail champion in person. I know that I tend only to review restaurants and places with 5 stars: the answer to that is simple... if I don't like a place I prefer to take it up directly with the management and if they do not give a suitable response (not financial but a real understanding of the problem) then perhaps I shall changing my approach and name and shame them - hasn't happened yet.

We visited Espellette recently for an early Father's Day lunch. We choose from the set menu options and every one was happy with the starters and mains. When the desserts came out 4 out of 10 were incorrect, when this was pointed out the waitress, her reaction was unprofessional to say the least. After it became apparent that we wasn't going to settle for the incorrect desserts she was just plain rude.It is unfortunate that such a small issue was handled this way as it was a bad end to an otherwise pleasant lunch. Personally I thought the food was all very tasty, although the starters could have been warmer. The pork belly main course was particularly nice and when everyone had their ordered deserts there were no complaints. When the bill came we asked for the service charge to be removed, this was purely down to the behaviour of the waitress over the deserts.

The service as always was great with the right amount of discretion and attentiveness. The food was tasty with good sized portions. My only dissapointment was when it came to desserts. As a vegetarian who has recently been caught out by hidden gellatine I thought I'd check that the desserts were ok for me to eat. It turns out all but one of the options (a sorbet, or there was banana thing the chef could specially prepare) aren't vegetarian. If meat products are being snuck into all their desserts it makes me think I probably should have asked about the asparagus véloute and artichoke risotto I had already eaten. Sadly this left me a little flustered at the end of my meal, something that could so easily be avoided by clearer labelling on the menu.

Afternoon tea at subject location was recommended by the concierge staff at the Marriott Grand Residence 47 Park Street. Reservations were secured via the concierge.Reservations were recommended, but probably not necessary for our weekend seating. Dress was business casual. As Americans we are not expert at reviewing tea services, but we have experienced a wide variety of tea offerings in the US and in England so can offer a semi-reasonably informed review. But not expert. IMHO tea consumption in America is probably radically different in most ways from what in normal in England. Both enjoyable, but different. Tea at the Connaught will not disappoint. The staff was attentive, responsive and very informed about all matters relevant to their offerings. The price seemed reasonable and the quantities entirely satisfying. Teas offered ranged from what one would normally expect at afternoon tea to the exotic. When we expressed interest in one particular offering we received a small sample of their house proprietary tea blend to further enjoy at home.Enjoy tea at Helene Darroze at the Connaught.

Then a pud of torte with sorbet plus coffee and petit foursMy slight beef would be a glass of very average 2013 monarchet. If you are serving white burgundy make it better than this This was a delicious lunch. Exactly as expected

We have just come back from London. one evening we had no idea about our dinner place. Online we found Espelette. What a great surprise! The restaurant is located in a verandah at the Connaught, one of London most famous hotels. Service was efficient and food good. Moreover the rate was a true bargain. Would love to go back!

I went with a friend having gone to the Helene Darroze restaurant a week earlier. What a difference - Espelette is average which Helene Darroze is amazing. The restaurant was great, the food boring and bland. I had chicken which came on a huge plate with a funny colour chicken piece in the centre. The potatoes side dish was very dry. The service however was excellent. I would not go again as would expect better in a hotel of this standard. Disappointing.

We had a three course lunch deal including a glass of champagne. Unfortunately, nothing to praise about the food except the desert, which was decent for the level of that kind of restaurant/hotel. The first course took quite a long time to come, but the main course was served as soon as we had finished the first course as if the waiter was waiting to serve. We both had turbot, which were overcooked and they were dry and tasteless. It’s a very small thing, but gave me mixed feelings as we were not offered any bread even though we had to wait for the first course quite some time. Maybe it was because we were on the deal even though the side plates were on our table…? If so, we feel it’s a very poor and tight management policy. How much does a piece of bread cost? It’s not the point if we wanted it or not.Over all, it was a nice hotel to spend a few hours and the staff were nice and attentive. However, would we go back to the restaurant? Probably not.

A delightful if pricey afternoon tea for two.A pleasingly brief selection of teas served in nice chunky silver teapots came with a plate of imaginatively filled sandwiches. We were offered seconds, the truffled egg mayonnaise was particularly good. Warm buttery scones with not quite enough clotted cream and a selection of homemade jams followed alongside some delicate sized but intensely flavoured cakes. The atmosphere and other guests are a bit more sophisticated than the flashier set up and clientele at the Ritz. Which is a bonus to my mind. All on all a lovely if rare treat.

Having had an amazing experience in the Helene Darroze restaurant in this superb hotel a few weeks earlier we decided to go back and try EspeletteIt was a last minute booking on a mid week evening and the restaurant was very quietService was first class as you would expect and our waiter was both charming and very knowledgable We had a mix of the menu de jour including champagne and a la carteThe belly pork with berlotti was superb. The pork was so tender with very little fat and tasted amazingMy only criticism of the whole experience was that the sour dough bread toast that came with the pate was a little over toastedOther than that a lovely meal in this amazing hotel

We had a lovely dinner experience at Espelette, with service and food both exceeding expectations. The room is gorgeous and this is really the top spot in Mayfair, such a gorgeous building and for sure my favourite hotel in London. We were seated by the fireplace which was lovely on a winter evening. The service was warm and friendly and the food was delicious, I had a fantastic lobster bisque followed by a light fish dish which was superb. The desserts were also very tasty. We will absolutely come again!

I decided to book the Espelette restaurant, located within the 5 Star Connaught hotel. We have walked past the hotel on many occasions, so it was only right to make this our choice for the evening. The Valentine set menu was absolutely divine!!Each dish was beautifully presented & most of all delicious. The service was fabulous, our waiter Sebastian was very precise & professional.Infact, we were made to feel very special, as the managers asked if all was well with our meal.As we were leaving the restaurant, a nice touch was my wife being given a lovely rose to take home.A thoroughly enjoyable evening with service to match.Well done to all.We will Definately be back.

I remember having lunch in this conservatory area some years ago - it was very good and of course the connaught is a top hotel - so inspite of quite a few negative reviews on trip advisor we gave it a go the other evening .Initially we were given a table rather near the kitchen which was a bit noisy , so we moved to a table by the window- the room rather brightly lit - so the candle on the table was rather superfluous. The lobster bisque was lacking any intensity of flavour - very poor , my lobster salad had some very tasty lobster pieces and although quite small , very enjoyablewe both had fish which was a little dry , my wifes cod in particular had very little sauce and we both had as an accompaniment the smallest clams.Desserts were fine .All in all a rather underwhelming experience, in terms of both the setting and the just about ok food-in London as everyone knows - the choice of where to eat is enormous - there would be no compelling reason to return here .

Being a prestigious five star hotel means that there is a huge reputation to live up to. We felt that it did not really match up to its exacting standards. The room was cold and we had to ask for a different table away from the window. Even then it was not really warm. Our starters were enjoyable, but the main courses (we both had dover sole) were not particularly startling. We did not bother with a dessert as we were cold, and moved to the lounge for coffee, where it was warm. Our waitress did not have a particularly good grasp of English and although efficient was not personable. Very poor value for money.

This is a restaurant that has no right being in the Connaught. The food was mediocre at best and the service just awful. The server was so condescending that even my very thick skin was offended by this frenchman. The extremely expensive Dover sole was overcooked and dry and the experience there so unsalvageable that it wasn't even worth the hassle of sending back and waiting for another. There are so many better places to eat in London why bother with this.

My husband and I didn't stay at the hotel unfortunately but we booked afternoon tea as a treat in cold January. It was amazing from start to finish; without a doubt the best afternoon tea experience I've had and well worth the expense (which of course is not cheap). I will be making this my "go to" place when I come down to London.- Food: outstanding and beautifully presented. What I loved most was that the afternoon tea was served in "courses" - it didn't come out all at once so you felt overwhelmed with food, and the scones didn't go cold while you ate the sandwiches. It was all served at an easy going pace. There was a great selection of teas - my husband is not a tea drinker (phillistine) so he ordered a coke, which wasn't charged for; again a nice touch. The sandwiches were varied & fresh. The scones were perfectly baked, served warm with clotted cream and 3 homemade jams. The pastries were to die for, elegantly arranged and all so different to each other. - Service: the staff were just brilliant. I love my tea and couldn't make up my mind what to order, so they brought a wee wooden tea box with samples of each one. Neither my husband or I are a fan of egg sandwiches so we asked to switch it for another type. This was not a problem, even though it was a different member of staff who we told vs the staff member who served us. One even went to find my friend who works in the Connaught bar who we don't get to see often! We are very guilty of wanting seconds (in our defense we didn't intend to have dinner that night due to flight times!) but we were actually offered more sandwiches, tea and scones without us going through the embarrassment of asking. That was a really lovely touch.- Interior: just gorgeous as the photos here will show; they are an accurate representation of the room.- Atmosphere: comfortable but elegant. There was a harpist playing light, uplifting music. There were families, ladies who lunch, business associates & couples - a lovely buzz. We felt unrushed, looked after and comfortable.

So I love afternoon tea and like to try different places - have been to The Dorchester (lovely) and The Goring (very nice) etc - but always come back to The Connaught for my birthday treat a few days after Christmas. It's my favourite and has been since I visited for the first line 5 years ago and was just as good when we visited again last week. The service is first class, restaurant conservatory is bright and airy, and the pastries just delicious. My Assam tea (I like it strong) is always spot on. Thanks The Connaught - I think you are wonderful.

We had two course set lunch menu. The staff was welcoming and friendly. The dishes were presented nicely. however, we are not impressed with the taste and portion given the price we paid and the expectation. Starter: Smoked salmon is very average, duck forge terrine is too rich and strong. Personally I do not think the preached pear compliments the forge enough. Main course: sea bass filet, dish is very simple and fish is slightly over cooked, and very salty. It is a nice atmosphere to have a quite afternoon but the foods are disappointing!

To begin with, this was an anniversary dinner, booked good 2-2,5 months in advance. As we arrived, got seated next to a party of 10 loud americans, no fireplace view or anything like the ones you see in the picture, as they were set for tomorrow's breakfast. As people mentioned the lighting was too strong and didn't make a cosy feeling whatsover.Even despite that, it was 9 pm on Sunday , few days before Christmas, as you can imagine just go somewhere else was not smart nor possible. The menu I booked, menu du jour was completely different to the one we got provided. First of all , it was 28 for 2 courses, 35 for 3 including glass of champagne on arrival. Not only it was completely different menu, it was also 10£ more, you can imagine how uncomfortable it makes already not great start?I knew our tastes, carpaccio followed by rabbit sounded great , but option changed to soup/ salmon or terrine , which were not tempting and then turkey for mains. How come you do not update it online, if I book , technically buy one thing you can't change it like that, especially 5 star hotel's restaurant. At least email so I could reconsider my special meal.As I approached the reception both receptionist and the waiter were there talking to me , which made me uncomfortable as I not only had to ask I felt a bit hostile having 2 against one situation, it seemed like unprofessional to say at least.Lastly, since I already said it was too late to grab a cab somewhere, we stayed.Food was good, not we wanted but I tried my best to make the most of our anniversary meal. The Barbera d"Alba we ordered was a bit too warm, but at that point I was just having not to be more upset. Had one dessert to share - the chocolate log which was really nice.At the very end our waiter disappeared, the other one brought the bill, roughly 150£ including service. Only in the cab I noticed we got charged for an extra dessert. Instead one 2 course, one 3 course both were charged as 3 courses per person. Not only no even smallest gesture for our anniversary on the dessert plate, we got overcharged for an extra!p.s. also 6,5£ for regular sparkling water is silly.Would never recommend or go back.

Went to The Connaught to celebrate my sister's 60th Birthday. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome. The staff were unpretentious and provided the right level of care whilst still not being over bearing. They offered more sandwiches which were welcome, all of which were very good. As they knew it was my sister's birthday they came round with a special cake for her which was a lovely touch. At the end they boxed up the cakes we couldn't eat and gave us additional cookies. I even managed to get an additional one of their gorgeous bags! I had only booked this restaurant as Claridges was full, however, I am certainly glad I did. Thank you to all the staff from the doormen to the waiters, you made the afternoon special with fond memories.

I spent some time trying to book a special Saturday night dinner at a London restaurant WC1 area. I guess I didn't anticipate how difficult it would be to book a renowned establishment less than a month in advance. However, Espelette had a booking available for the time and date required, this should have been a warning sign..! In short the food was fine, it just wasn't special in any way. Basic food, well cooked. I had a very nice steak and my wife had the Norfolk chicken... But it was overpriced for what it was. In terms of ambience the lighting level was a bit bright in my opinion. There are some cosy looking tables, however we were not seated on one of them! So we ended up poked away by the kitchen entrance. Sorry, I will not be going back.

Having walked past The Connaught in the number of years visiting London we thought we'd give this restaurant a try (wrong). We walked in a welcome was given and shown to our seats. And there we sat and sat and sat, there was a mother and 2 children behind us who seem to be enjoying the food, we were finally handed our menu and that was it. There must have been 8 staff wondering around and talking to each other, oh did I mention there would have been 10 diners in the restaurant at that time (lunch) as the time progressed we decided to leave. To add insult to injury as we walked out the maître de asked if we enjoyed ourselves, my partner not one to hold back told him in no uncertain terms what had happened and they should remind staff that the customers come first.

If this was any other restaurant in any other location, it would probably have been a 4 or 5 start experience. Our expectations for dining at what should have been one of the best venues in London were high and the experience want up to that. The good was rather good, but were were all hungry after three courses. We had booked a special rate which included champagne, which did not arrive. I also wish hotels would understand that I do not need to be handed a towel to dry my hands in the loo!

We went for the Afternoon tea treat. It is a very beautiful and luxury place, no wonder, is one of the best places in UK. The food was excellent, specially the scones with jams and the little cakes. Yes is a bit pricey, but you get to enjoy every penny worth for it. The food was really the best I have ever had and they do refills until you want as many you want. Service was great, and the lady playing on the harp, made me feel so ,,in wonderland''

We came for an afternoon tea last week Sunday for my husbands birthday, there was four of us.On arrival the hotel was lovely and warm, we greeted politely, our coats taken from us and stored and we were shown to our table. Our table was ready and we greeted well by the restaurant staff. All of the staff were polite, friendly and ready to assist with the questions we had during our tea.The tea itself was a very good quality, there was a nice selection of sandwiches, we had 2 servings of the sandwiches and both had different variations which was very good. The fillings were tasty and fresh. I liked the way they served the sandwiches separately, these were brought over first and once we had finished they then served the scones and cakes. The scones were very good, light but with the right texture and the taste was nice. The accompanying cream and preserves were also very nice and there was a good selection. The cake selection was good, the cakes were tasty and not too sweet. Overall this was a nice experience, the live harp music they have added a nice touch to it and the general ambience was good.

My partner wished to treat her first boss of many years ago to Afternoon Tea on our recent return visit to London. We selected the Connaught based on the reputation and appearance since its renovations. At the front door we were offered help with our sleeping child's pushchair, warmly greeted by the management and given the opportunity to select from an impressive range of teas. The setting of Espelette is amazing overlooking Carlos Place and wonderfully eccentric high empire period shops of Mount Street. The sandwiches all had a twist, the scones were perfect and the cakes the best I've had outside Laduree in Paris. We spent two very pleasant hours having deliberately aimed for the last slot of the afternoon to ensure the table would not be required again. A very special experience that would for me rank #2 out of 40 plus places we have gone. Will certainly return.

We had breakfast and dinner at Espelette during our stay at the Connaught.Breakfast wasn't anything special. The food was standard fare and it wasn't presented or prepared in any special way. Our waiter at breakfast forget one part of our order which he brought after we asked about it. We then discovered towards the end of our meal that he had omitted another thing that was part of our order.Dinner on the other hand was very good. the food was very nice and the portions were generous. We enjoyed each of our 3 different courses. Dessert was particularly good. Our waiters were very courteous and friendly and added positively to the experience. The restaurant added a personal touch by giving us a congratulatory dessert because we were celebrating a special occasion. I would consider returning for dinner if I find myself in the area again.

This fish and chips place near Oxford Street is average, with a minimum order of £10 per person. They also add a 12.5% service charge for dine-in, which feels unnecessary. Service charges should be optional, especially since food and labor costs in the UK are already high, unlike in the US where servers depend on tips due to lower wages.
