Eric’s Fish and Chips Holt in North Norfolk

We are 3 friends on holiday, staying in Wroxham. We visited Holt & went into Eric's for lunch. Absolutely fantastic food, we had 2x small & 1x med Cod Loins, 3x small chips, proper mushy peas (not tinned) & lovely bread & butter. We all agreed - the fish and amazing soft crunchy batter were delicious, as was everything else. All the lovely young staff were extremely friendly & the service was excellent. Good value for money. 10 out of 10. Will definitely visit again.

Really nice friendly Fish & Chips shop. Service was quick and food hot. Had their jumbo battered sausages and it’s was a delicious meal. Friend commented it was one of the most tasty he had had. Definitely recommend!

We used to come to Eric’s in holt quite often but it’s safe to say we won’t be coming back we ordered two sausage and chips and when we finally got them the chips were solid they definitely needed cooking longer, we went back in and said that the chips wasn’t cooked, the woman behind the counter got us some “fresh” chips also not cook but VERY greasy also was placed in a small box so where was we to put the “battered sausage” 🤷🏼‍♀️ in the bottom of the bag they went, I feel like there was no real management, there was a random woman cleaning tables while 3 members of staff were stood talking, if you want a recommendation for chips in holt go to Nelson’s fry’s 4 u.

Very expensive for the size of portion and quality of the food. Service was poor, rude, and unhelpful. Nearly half an hour waited for two portions, very disappointing and certainly won't be going back. It cost us £29+ for two portions of takeaway fish and chips, no sauce (they'd run out) , and no drinks.

Looking for somewhere to have lunch today, have been to Byfords a couple of times but having to queue is a pain, anyway found Eric's after visiting the Red Dot gallery, fab service, fab food too, quick efficient service and friendly, fish lovely and fresh light batter lovely non greasy chips and divine tartare sauce (think home made) ooh and Stokes ketchup a real treat, a 60's retro vibe table wise, give it a try 😀

There are three chippies in Holt and I've been to all of them this is is the Worst and my god they are expensive I don't live in Yarmouth that's where you will find high 💔 prices like this and what you get is terrible its ridiculous and its not funny I will never ever go back there and I say this avoid it like Covid 19!

As promised, returned with the in-laws and so happy to say the service was still 5star! Food was perfectly cooked. Such a happy and friendly place to eat. We as a family love coming to Eric’s when we are in holt together.

Having just moved to Holt i was checking out places to eat when i came across Eric's fish and chip restaurant so popped in and glad i did lovely place very friendly stuff, nice and clean plenty of different options to pick from my meal was lovely and nice that you can get tea, coffee soft drinks or water will definitely go back 😊

I've got to say, i've been to Erics 3 times on the way home since Christmas - and even though i was looking to be critical - found the Fish & Chips really very good The value for money wasn't too bad either in these over inflated times - would have been good to have got some tartare sauce or tom sauce for nowt - but just being picky. Chips were very tasty, haddock meat was chunky, batter was tasty - probably the best F&C takeaway in Cromer, Sheringham and Holt - definately worth giving a go

Disappointed as Eric’s used to be sooo good. The cod was ok but the chips were awful. They seemed dry and tasteless. We had to pick through to find some edible ones. Won’t be returning in a hurry.

Eric’s in Holt was a lifeline during lockdown, in the brief gaps when we were allowed out we would leg it up to Holt, grab a mix of their fish, cod cheeks, chips, battered gherkins and pineapple then sit in the car at Cley and enjoy excellent fish and chips worthy of the 2 hour round trip. Admittedly over the last year we’ve been to Thornham more than Holt and haven’t had any fish and chips since August so having had an active day yesterday we thought we’d go for the usual. When ordering I mistakenly said fries then jokingly corrected to chips because this isn’t a Mcdonalds. Prescient if unfortunate. A medium haddock straight from a freezer bag; dried, dense and chewy, scaled to pixie size. Cod “chunks”, probably from the next bag over, so thick it puts my porridge to shame. “Chips” straight from the cash’n’carry budget section, withered and dry. A pineapple fritter, machine cut, the eyes still in with a uniform batter so incongruous as to scream “I came in a bag of 2 dozen”. Whilst for some reason the battered gherkins (still of the usual standard thankfully) and the black garlic mayo have undergone shrinkage. I know it is cold out but… I know times are tough for chippies, I know bills have gone insane, product is twice the price and no one has any cash but, take the proverbial with quality and it’s not death by a thousand cuts; it’s a suicide. There were four of us queuing at peak in Eric’s. There were on average a dozen queuing at the Holt chip shop each time we walked past. I’ve never been in there but, after yesterday, I’ll be another joining that dozen to see what it’s like. Shame really but “all good things…” n’all.

We had visited Norfolk for a long weekend and had spent time wandering around small towns revisiting areas from our youth. By mid afternoon we needed a meal and as we were in Holt we asked a local van driver for a recommendation. He had no hesitation in suggesting Erics. So we took his advice and really pleased we did as the fish and chips were excellent and good value for money. Interestingly he had battered Mars bars and battered jam sandwiches on the menu! We didn't try those but our meals excellent.

After all the hype of Eric's we decided to try the holt one..I must confess of being a fish & chip consesuier/fanatic all my life and since living in North Norfolk for the last 3 years my wife and I have tried most..this one in holt I'm afraid to say was disappointing compared to others we've been to..in our opinion Dave's in sheringham is no 1,fishers in hunstanton is no2 and Gray's in wroxham no 3!..who hypes these places up?..we will try the thornham one cos we like to support fish&chip restaurants but Dave's never gets a mention and it is the best,believe me!!👍mick&laura

Visited last Monday. The fish and chips were very average. The large portion of cod was very oily and not very large. The staff were not very cheerful either.

Not the best fish and chips I have had, chips not cooked enough, cod and sausages were over cooked. Monday night so the shop was very very quiet and still not up to standard. Won’t be returning anytime soon. Which is a shame.

We went at lunchtime on a Saturday and the shop was very quiet (throughout our visit). This was a bit puzzling as the town itself was teeming! The staff were a little bit underwhelming in that they seemed a little disassociated and not very personable (as a vis-a-vis we went into the wet fish shop a few yards away and the lady who served us was warm, engaging and chatty); anyway, that’s hardly a deal-breaker but it seemed a bit discordant given how quiet the shop was. The food itself was a bit of a Tale of Two Cities: the haddock was absolutely delicious - crunchy golden batter and divinely tasty and juicy fish; however, the chips were lukewarm and strangely unlike what one would recognise as ‘chippy chips’ - difficult to quantify but those that know, know. They were a bit thin and somewhat chewy and looked like the type one finds served in pubs - quite acceptable in that context but unusual for a traditional chippy. Maybe I’m missing the point here as it’s not really marketed as a trad place but perhaps more as a restaurant with a takeaway option, but for the price, it really wasn’t something I’d rush to repeat sadly (I had set my expectations very high due to the business’s admittedly very good marketing). So, it’s okay to good but not really what I had expected.

I am puzzled by the varying reviews of Eric’s. It was busy when we arrived and we had to wait a short while for a table, but our food then arrived quickly. The fish was excellent, very fresh and in a properly crisp thin batter. I guess the portion could have been a bit bigger, but it was quite adequate. By contrast, the “medium” portion of chips was enormous, though I am ashamed to say I scoffed the lot. It wasn’t cheap, but perfectly fair given how much the raw ingredients now cost. We are staying in Holt for a few days, and plan to eat here again.
