One of our favourite places for a special lunch or dinner in Brighton. Food is always delicious with amazing fire cooked meat and a number of vegan options. The rolo desert is a very popular choice! Staff are always friendly and we always feel welcome coming with young children. Lyndon served us last time and made some fantastic recommendations on what to order!

To celebrate respective silverware success, an old pal over from Australia (supporting, whisper it soft, Crystal Palace) and I (Spurs) followed my carnivorous daughter’s recommendation to go to Embers, and she was spot on. The lsea bream, smoked chicken and particularly the lamb gigot were sensational but so too were the veggie plates: baked aubergine and bonfire potatoes. I can also recommend the whiskey sour treacle tart accompanied by a glass of Amaro Montenegro. Lyndon served us with speed and friendly aplomb. None of this came cheap, it must be said, but when you’re in the mood for a less than virtuous treat, heed Embers’ siren call.

Totally wonderful meal at Embers. We stopped in at lunch and had small plates and the chicken main. Everything was full of flavor and crisp where it should be tender as needed and very modern. Servers Lyndon and Ilke were tremendous— Professional and engaging.

Nice environment and excellent food. The grill makes it all very tasty. Meat is excellent but also the grilled broccoli or the bonfire potatoes. Price is reasonable with the set menu at 38 pounds. Recommended. And great music with an excellent playlist.

The BEST roast and dinner! We first came here Saturday evening for a fun date - LOVED the celeriac shawarma and aubergine and especially the skate wing. I was looking forward to trying this restaurant but unfortunately I was quite disappointed. Very friendly waiters but a huge wait to receive our dishes. The lamb dish was very fatty and swimming in oil. The eggplant didn't have much flavor and the celeriac shawarma was also super greasy.

We’re just had our dinner at Embers and we’re speechless about this place. First we had a warm welcome at the doors by a lovely gentleman, we didn’t get his name unfortunately. We’ve been partially served by Valeria, that just creates a vibe for your dinner! She’s super informed about her job, she got all the answers and most importantly she makes you feel comfortable and not guilty of having an extra request for your table. The roast itself- MASTERCLASS! Everything had a hint of smoke, delicious, a gastro-joy (we made sounds during all meal). It’s good! It’s atmospheric. It’s worth it.

I recently took a trip to Brighton and was recommended Ember for it’s Sunday roast. The restaurant is cozy and welcoming and the staff extremely attentive. We ordered the three meat roast and it was delicious the cauliflower cheese purée was so delicious and the lamb sausage was outstanding. The manager Lyndon made me the best dirty martini I have had in a very long time ( was on parr if not better than the Mondrians martini) I also noticed how lovely he was to his staff, letting as many of them go once the restaurant had quietened down as it was the bank holiday. I thought this showed great leadership and am sure the reason the staff seem so friendly and happy is because management treat them fairly and respectfully. It was lovely to see. Would highly recommend and will go back next time I am in Brighton to try the full menu. Oh and the chocolate desert was to die for, a must try 😊

Came here for our tenth anniversary and to be honest we were not very impressed with the food. It was a real shame as the restaurant is stunning, down to the crockery & silverware - everything was so aesthetically pleasing, the service was 10/10 and we loved the atmosphere in there; with the bonus of an open kitchen but for us the meat was incredibly undercooked. We ordered the lamb and had to send it back as the bits that were edible were so chewy we couldn’t eat it. The pork was ok but again under for us. The chicken tasted great but again just slightly under to feel comfortable to eat it all. The fish head had no meat at all (and we eat fish head a lot in Malaysia so we know how much meat you can get from it) so ended up being just a plate of liquid. We also noticed tongs being used for all meat? I’m not sure whether this is ok due to the constant high heat, quite possibly but I wanted to write incase the head chef needed to be aware. They kindly took the lamb off the bill, drinks were amazing and staff knew their stuff when it came to wine. I normally only write positive reviews unless we are extremely unhappy and disappointed, this is not the case - it was a real shame that the food was undercooked for our liking but I feel the lady chef seemed incredibly stressed so maybe this was an off night & the love wasn’t there for the food. We did enjoy being there and our waiter was absolutely lovely.

10/04/25 £110 for two, inc. a cocktail and a carafe of wine The more reviews I write the fussier I feel, but the more I consider my approach to writing them, the less I care. The higher an average score you dish out the less scope you have for celebrating the really special cooking you come across every once in a while. I also think it’s important to appraise a place against its intentions. Not all restaurants are created equal - deliberately. It’s redundant to judge a Nandos half chicken against something meant to achieve much more. Like, for example, a tandoori-glazed Somerset Saxon Chicken served under murgh makhani sauce and an onion bhaji crumb. What’s all this got to do with Embers specifically? It’s been a difficult one to judge, with so much more nuance to the experience than a simple mark out of five can convey. According to Embers’ website, their aim is to replicate the flavours of fine dining within an accessible setting: the marrying of simple centrepieces of good-quality, wood-fired meats and veg with enhancing flourishes in flavour combinations you wouldn’t cook for yourself that just… work. Like, for example, a tandoori-glazed… And they so nearly pulled it off to a tee. No complaints with the setting whatsoever. That part they smashed. We sat at the counter, front row seats at the theatre which is Embers’ big, open barbecue. The pleasant sounds of happy restaurant chit-chat behind us and the crackle of logs catching fire in front provided the soundtrack; atmosphere without music is an all-too-rare phenomenon at restaurants these days. The main players were ‘the meat man’, who smoked and sliced steak after steak, revealing perfectly and remarkably consistently cooked cuts to jealous eyes (I’ve given up red meat for Lent); and ‘the veg man’, who used a series of utensils and contraptions to juggle dishes like celeriac shawarma, purple sprouting broccoli Caesar salad and house baked aubergine between different fires with a surprising absence of (visible) panic. We were starving, so quickly ordered lovely buttery nocellara olives, and sourdough. Bread, often merely the vehicle for delicious (in this case) dripping butter; in a fancy restaurant setting you expect better than a beaten-up 2001 Peugeot 206. Anyway, eventually one of those Caesar salads arrived. The fresh gem and charred broccoli, drizzled in a rich-but-light whipped tofu dressing, would have made a lovely accompaniment to what was to come, and so we tried not to stuff our faces with it. We failed. The rest arrived together: that bloody tandoori-glazed chicken again, along with a roasted savoy cabbage quarter and Embers’ bonfire potatoes: three layers of competingly delicious spud: the crispiest jacket skin I’ve ever had, pillow mash and crispy crisps with a layer of onion and ale jam somewhere in the middle. This was raised eyebrows good. The flamethrower-finished cabbage was another dish we failed to savour (and considered ordering another of). And the chicken? Ah, the chicken. I went through a series of emotions before I’d even finished the first bite. Excitement turned to greed when I grabbed the best-looking portion. Cutting into the thick thigh portion I detected a hint of rubberiness which I quashed and then forgot about as the murgh makhani in particular did its bit. Yes! But then that rubberiness returned as I chewed, and subsequent inspections revealed red warning flags. It may have been safe to eat. But I’m not fussy or squeamish - and I understand the pinky hue of chicken cooked for longer periods at lower temperatures (Embers sous vide theirs first) - and I was put off. Given the taste of the glaze I wanted to gnaw on the bone but given the appearance of the flesh I left a fair bit of it. It got in my head. The treacle tart was fine (should have tried the cheese on toast) and the coffee was awful, which was a shame, because it felt like the quality of the evening tapered off towards the end. But there was so much to like about Embers that I really want to go back and give it another shot. Maybe when I’m eating steak.

We had the Wagyu rump with potatoes, Cesar salad and smoked lamb as our small plates. All really good. The potatoes were yummy 🤤. What if they added cheese to the dish? Great place to come for a celebration or a night out as a treat. Has some good options for our team member who's a vegetarian. Everyone left happy and full. I wish they still did the brownie for dessert as I'd have gotten that tonight. Sadly wasn't on the menu.

Fantastic evening and a great little open flame venue in Brighton - An absolute gem of an establishment Plenty of food on the sharing roast platter for the three of us and all in all was a sublime tasting meal. Had the Rolo Desert, a MUST have if visiting Embers The one point on the food that the three of us agreed on was that mostly everything was flamed on the plate. Would be a nice touch to offer veg as an option in a different way other than charred to give a slight break from the smokiness of the meal Will definitely recommend and be back in the future ❤️

Probably the best Sunday roast I've had. My partner and I had heard good things, but if anything those were understatements. Staff were chipper and service was friendly and attentive without being fussy or overbearing. The food was absolutely sublime; the meat was tender and delicious, but the veg and roast potatoes (so often what lets restaurant roasts down) were as good as I've ever had. Even had room for a cheeky rhubarb creme brulee, which was a delicious end to the meal. I cannot recommend this place highly enough!

Had an absolutely gorgeous meal for our anniversary. As a coeliac (who's also lactose intolerant & allergic to shellfish!) I don't have much luck with restaurants, there tends to be one dish I can eat on the menu (that's IF I'm lucky! There's plenty of places we just can't go to!). This was amazing - we had 7 dishes we could both share equally - with a couple of tweaks they were happy to make - even without that I'd have had a choice, which is almost unheard of! It's long annoyed me that I don't have access to the same choices as other when we eat out, just for the want of a couple of small substitutions on a menu which make little/no diff to flavour - the menu was well thought through & delicious, even though it's changed regularly! All the small plates were perfectly planned and executed - 'small plates' can sometimes be a bit of an incoherent mishmash but this was a succession of taste bombs one after the other. The lamb & bonito were outrageously good. We had an absolutely cracking meal - staff were attentive, cheery and careful with my food requests. Will definitely be back!

We visited Brighton for the weekend and stumbled on reviews for the Sunday Roast at Embers, we are so glad we did! It's a lovely small restaurant with such a friendly welcome and service, and the food was incredible. We both commented that it's probably the best roast we've ever tried (both British, so lots of roast dinner experience!). The wood charred veggies were delicious, amazing gravy, crispiest potatoes, and excellent cuts of meat (we had the 3 beasts platter). Like so many highly rated Brighton restaurants, it’s not as good as it appears. The service was great - full credit due - and the restaurant is nicely styled. It did however suffer from that bizarre Brighton issue being unbelievably cold, remarkable given this place has an open grill but we left chilled to the bone. The food was also typically Brighton, good in parts but not consistent. It started well with some good cooking but then went sadly downhill. The mackerel dish was frankly poor, poorly prepared fish, undercooked and served with coconut cream - the Thai green curry completely absent - such that it really did not work. Ditto the venison dish. We’d not revisit and the positive reviews suggest other punters are choosing style over substance.

From the starters to the dessert, everything was perfectly balanced and harmonious, a testament to a kitchen run with passion and expertise. Went for Sunday Roast recently. Food was fine, although nothing was particularly remarkable unlike some of the other establishments doing open flame. Still unsure on the cauliflower cheese puree. That was perhaps the most interesting part of the food. Yorkshire felt it had better days and I’d have been aggrieved at paying for an extra one. The beef was decent. The service was remarkable though, and frankly extremely poor. On arrival unacknowledged until someone had finished faffing around and dealt with another party and it set the standard from there. It’s entirely disorganised, and we were served by 4 or 5 people. Only one of which was particularly attentive. Some of the staff seemed to think they’re doing you a favour getting condiments (even though some were still forgotten) and getting a drink. No one came to see if we’d like another drink after 45 minutes, no one came to check if the food was ok. Fortunately we didn’t opt for dessert but after waiting 50 minutes for food, we’d probably be pushing it time-wise with a two hour booking. Ultimately the food is let down by poor service.

Seated on the bar, my fiancée and I had a phenomenal view of the kitchen that left us totally engrossed and heavily anticipating our meal. With the aroma of woodsmoke and sizzling meats and vegetables, we would have ordered everything on the menu if we'd had room! Drinks were excellent, house cocktails are definitely worth sampling, but the real stars of the show are all of the carefully attended dishes cooked over open flame. The steak was phenomenal, but seeing whole plaice turned out of the oven, and perfectly pink racks of lamb being carved up right in front of us left us second guessing our order until the last moment! Don't skimp on the small plates either! Some of the best roasted carrots atop a gorgeous dahl. A really excellent night. Thank you, Embers!

We went to this restaurant for dinner on a Sunday with a reservation for 7 people, made more than a week in advance. Upon arrival, we were informed that all the food would be brought out together in the center of the table. One of the main issues was that most of our group wanted to order the pork belly, but we were only told it was unavailable when we were about to order—not when we were handed the menus. Given that our reservation had been made so far in advance, we expected better planning and enough stock, especially for a group booking. When the food arrived, the portions were quite disappointing. We had ordered 7 roasts, but the amount served was simply not enough, and most of us left feeling hungry. The beef was good, but the rest of the dish was underwhelming. For instance, the cauliflower purée that was supposed to accompany the meal barely amounted to two spoonfuls in total for seven people. Considering the price we paid, we expected a much better meal. There were also other details that affected our experience. Our reservation was at 7:00 PM and it felt like they were running out of food and just serving whatever they had left. However, considering how far in advance we had booked, they should have been much better organized. Recommendation: If you decide to visit, it might be best to go in a small group of two or three people to ensure the portions are enough. Also, consider dining earlier to avoid missing out on menu items.

We had such a wonderful evening at Embers♥️ the food and service were exceptional- we were a bit late to arrive for our reservation but the waitress (Valerie) was so friendly and accommodating, she took the time to carefully explain everything and made sure we were 100% happy with our experience and everything we ordered! Food (we had the Sunday Roast), wine and cocktails were all suuuuper tasty, we are already looking forward to visiting again☺️✨

The storm was blowing and the rain falling, we had not booked but as we expected the weather kept people away. What a find, Sunday Roast with a difference. We were given two seats at the bar, brilliant position being able to watch the barman work his magic and the chef’s cooking on open fires. Aperitif cocktails were excellent, full of flavour and well presented. Sunday roast is served on one sharing plate, a mountain of food, grilled veg, cauliflower cheese purée, roast potatoes to die for and of course the meat, plenty of choice. Wine is available by the glass, carafe or bottle. The plate was cleared every mouthful enjoyed to the end. Leave room for the desert, Bakewell tart with homemade raspberry sorbet. The staff are all friendly and helpful, it is a small restaurant so book to make sure you are not disappointed.

My girlfriend and I went for the roast at Embers today and it was fantastic. It came with a solid portion of meat, great Yorkshire puds, thick tasty gravy and loads of veg. The options are plentiful, brilliant wine/cocktail list and the staff were all super friendly. Special mention to Valerie who was attentive, knowledgeable as well as very charismatic. Also, Ben on the bar was great and the Mezcal negroni he made me was one of the best cocktails I’ve had in ages. We will be back!

Ember is a great spot in Brighton’s food scene. The simple, relaxed decor sets the tone, and every dish was tasty and left us wanting more. The cocktails were fun and unique, with our server Valerie explaining everything clearly and adding a bit of flair with fire and bubbles. We’re excited to come back.

This was the second time I have been. The last time about a year ago was sadly the sadly but I wanted to give it a second chance as others had told me they thought it was good (although one person recently had the Wagu beef and was very disappointed), much like other reviews to be fair. To start with it was a freezing night but that doesn't mean I should have to sit at a freezing table, literally. Not only by the draft from the front door constantly opening but also from a cold draft from the wall. We were moved to a 'booth' at the back that while it had a radiator was equally cold. There was one server (not our main one) who ended up offering a blanket but frankly in an indoor restaurant that was not OK. When we stood up to leave the head height was indeed warm so it was clearly a draft from below which made sense given the radiator was at head height. The initial server, while very pleasant was incredibly slow. Our initial small plates / sides took over 30 mins to arrive and when they did came out in an order that meant they were eaten before the meat arrived. The plates were literally cold and when we served the food onto the plates it became cold on the outside. We had to ask twice when the meat (steak and pork) was arriving. When it did the steak was both tough and chewy (Sussex tenderloin) but pork fine. We didn't stay for desert as were genuinely cold and fed up with the speed of food and quality. One redeeming part was a male server who went above and beyond to try and rectify things. He was the one that actively moved us, actively went and got a blanket and actively kept checking on us. He was a credit to the service industry. Overall gave it two chances and thats enough. My rating is 3 for food as it was average, 2 for service and those stars were both for the male server and 2 for atmosphere because it was freezing. The ambience is great both times. Just an honest review, only the second I have made as I only do it when its great or poor.

Embers was the perfect meal to end the year on.The crispy sprouts were sublime and I would never normally choose them. The molasses cured pork collar was the best savoury dish of the night. The wagyu special, tenderstem and bonfire potato with burnt ends were a great main. For afters, the truffle cheese on toast accompanied the rolo dessert perfectly and the rolo dessert was one of my favourites of all time. A top quality meal in the cosy heart of the Brighton Lanes.

I’ve eaten at Embers several times and it’s always delivered on being a fun but high-class experience. The food is cooked on an open fire, so if you’re into that, this place has it nailed. The cocktails are strong and tasty and recommendations for wine to pair with the food are always well considered and delicious. What makes the experience particularly memorable is the service, the food is top notch of course but all the staff are friendly yet professional and fully invested in ensuring you have a good time. We saw in the New Year with the team which was great (for us at least). Special thanks to Lyndon and the team who looked after us and let us join in. Looking forward to many more visits in 2025.

5 of us ventured to Embers for NYE and the set menu they were offering. What a great night. Service was second to none, food exquisite and atmosphere just what we wanted on the final night of 2024. Thank you for a great night!

Had Sunday lunch here today for my wife’s 40th birthday and all I can say is wow!!! Easily the best Sunday roast I’ve ever had really friendly and attentive staff and such a cool restaurant. Will definitely come again next time we are in Brighton. If you are in the area don’t think about it just go, I promise you will not regret it.

Day out in Brighton and came across this little gem! What caught my eye was the wide choice of gluten free options as I have coeliacs. However, this place was also cool, welcoming, well priced, knowledge and friendly staff, great food with fantastic portions, and a great bottle of wine which was suggested and enjoyed!! Would definitely recommend!

Delicious food The vegetable small plates taste superb. Lots of complex flavours. My son loved his steak platter and smoked chicken leg. The restaurant is warm and cosy with super friendly staff. It’s really good value for money too.

Lovely experience for my partner’s birthday here at the weekend. Food is really fantastic and the ambience is great - warm and inviting with all the real woodfired cooking going on in the background. Cocktails were very well done - a real mixology approach here and our server could not have done more for us and was clearly passionate about her knowledge of food and wine and how matching these would work best for our meal. Really good restaurant- recommend for a special Sunday roast experience with a high end twist.

Terrible really. Horrible seating, very average and VERY overpriced food. Service ok. Apart from the waitress knocking my wine over. (Not even offered a replacement glass) Awful menu, not what was on the website, and £51 for a tiny steak was a joke. Definitely will not return!

How lovely to finally dine at Kitgum, after having tried their food at a local music festival last summer. It feels like the best bits of a local London neighbourhood restaurant - intimate, inviting, buzzing atmosphere, great cocktails. We got started with the cod roe puri (delicious) and a coconut rum cocktail (also wonderful). Food came out quickly so you’re never left yearning for more - very important in a small plates setting - although the portions are good. The daal was some of the best we’ve ever had - super flavoursome and well spiced. Tomatoes with coriander was sublime, beef shin curry silky and rich, and the fried chicken with spiced tomato yogurt…incredible. Wine was lovely too (I had a glass of the Gamay - perfectly matched with the food flavours), and then dessert was a delicious saffron kulfi. Service was friendly, unfussy, and welcoming. It was a shame they had ran out of their single malt whisky that was advertised with dessert - as that would have really been the icing on the cake, but all in all it was a really super meal and experience - and another in the (sadly) small handful of really elevated Brighton food spots.

What a fantastic find... What a fantastic find...in Hove for the day, we spotted this restaurant and decided to take a look. Instantly we were greeted and welcomed in. Being both vegan we are often cautious of where to eat but this italuan restaurant could not have been more willing to adapt their menu if they tried. My husband Marco is Italian and wanted Spaghetti aglio olio and peperoncino and although not on the menu they were happy to make...he said it was the best hed had. My pizza was delicious I added capers and fresh chilli. We had olives and bread they make on the premises. The house red was excellent as was the coffee and grappa..we dined extremly well and were made to feel so welcome. Our bill came to £74 and was such good value. We will be back. Xx

Me and a group of friends had been walking around for ages trying to find a somewhere to eat and stumbled upon this and so glad we did ! Great coffee ( my husband is a little bit of a coffee snob so it’s a great complement) and the breakfast menu was lovely such variety and great flavour! Staff were lovely and chatty ! If we lived local we’d be back there all the time but will definitely pop back when we visit !
