Staying in the hotel we experienced breakfasts, tea & dinners & enjoyed all our meals. All the meals were plentiful, well cooked & well presented.

We booked dinner for four, and enjoyed a quick drink next to the open fire in the bar before we went through for dinner. Our wine and food orders were taken before we were taken through to the restaurant, so our wine was then waiting for us and our starters came out swiftly once we were seated. Two friends came to join us at this point, and the staff very kindly added two place settings very quickly and efficiently. They also made sure that all the mains came out together, even the late orders. The food was nicely presented, well cooked and very tasty. The service was excellent, and the atmosphere was lovely. Really highly recommended.

It was my mother's 88th birthday and I arranged for my mother to have high tea. It was a lovely occasion. The staff even sent her a birthday card. She was thrilled. The staff couldn't have been nicer and more attentive. Thank you to them.

We booked here for a family birthday party and ordered rib eye medium rare , hake and duck. I do not know if the chef was half asleep but ill come back to this in a bit. food arrived within 5 mins which is good. We started to all tuck in and 5 mins after had to call waiters back twice as they forgot garlic bread and correct sauce . Going back to the food... hake was not seasoned and bland. One of the rib eyes was over done/dry and the chips were hard. Thr duck was overdone but ok. I have ate in excellent , good and bad restaurants in my time and for what you pay for here the food was below average. We did recieve a 25% discount off our bill but in my eyes once food has left kitchen and is not perfect its to late to apologise and left our family birthday celebrations sour.

My family and I came from Newport for what we thought was going to be a lovely evening having afternoon tea. However, we did not have a lovely time at all and could not wait to leave. This is an honest review from a disgruntled customer. The staff were well mannered but totally non existent, the dining room was very quiet yet the service we received was less than one would expect in a public toilet. We were asked once if we would like drinks and then received the wrong drinks 20 minutes later which were then replaced a further 20 minutes later. Why does making tea and coffee take this amount of time? We were not given cutlery and as there was nobody to ask we had to get our own from a neighbouring table this was on more than one occasion. Our orders came out wrong when we had already paid and made requests the prior day as well. This meant more of a wait AGAIN. This was the case for every meal, serving non vegetarian high tea to a veggie and presenting me with a ham and cheese toasties despite telling them I do not eat pork or ham. The fact it was on my plate horrified me but I did not make a fuss. However, it took close to 30 minutes to receive a replacement toastie. Not once did any staff come over and ask how we were or how our food was, this is standard practice and would get better service in any wetherspoons pub. It literally felt like we were ignored! When my family and I wanted a second drink my father had to go looking for a staff member and request they come to the table, this truly was disappointing. Yet low and behold he had an additional 20 minute wait to receive these drinks. I had a gentleman's afternoon tea and had to request my tankard of beer as it was not offered and was supposed to be served with my food. I was given the options of beers and made an choice on what I'd like. 10 minutes later the waitress returned saying sorry I offered you to hehe wrong drinks and gave me an option of 3 mass produced offerings to which I chose Guinness. This was also disappointing. My food was only okay and if I'm honest would have been trumped by a wetherspoons. On top of this my family had sandwiches made from extremely dry bread but at this point we were so sick of the experience we just gave up. There was nobody to complain aboit then to so they just ate them. My brownie had completely dried on the outside but as there was nobody to complain to I just cut the dry parts off and ate the rest. How ridiculous is that it must have been sat in the air for a long time. My father fed back about the poor food to the manager and did not mention the sub standard service we received as we wanted to just leave. The manager said thanks for your honesty but did not offer anything to compensate for our awful experience. It felt like the hotel was happy to take our money and serve us crap. All in all, we won't be spending anymore money there and would most definitely not recommend a visit here to anyone until the establishment is better managed. However, if you want poor service, expensive stale sandwiches and brownies then this is the place to come! Totally shocking!

Went with friends for a Christmas party night. Food was good but drinks are expensive compared to many other places. Atmosphere was fine and we all ended up in the lounge as it was a bit difficult to chat due to the disco. Not really a complaint just an observation. Worked out fine as we could go back and forth into the disco for a dance.

There were 14 of us celebrating an Afternoon Tea for our friends 70th Birthday. Unfortunatley The friend celebrating her 70th Birthday was taken ill ( A serious illness not just couldn't be bothered to come ) and unable to attend . We rang the Coed y Mwster 48 hrs prior to Our Booking date and were told that we were unable to have any money back for our poorly friend but the money would be put behind the bar for us to spend . as it was a cream tea and most were driving this wasn't really suitable for this occassion . We then asked could we take a bottle of wine for our poorly friend we were able to do this but as the cost of the cream tea was £15 and the wine was £20 for a bottle of house wine !!! we would have to pay the extra £5 !!! As for the cream Tea that was poor too compared to LLanerch vineyard Celtic Manor and Ceaders Bryngarw it consisted of 3 finger sandwiches a Welshcake Scone and 3 other tiny cakes unlimited Tea and coffee One of our party asked for plain sandwiches and when bought to us we asked which were the plain ones to which the young girl replied OH THEY ALL ARE !!! but they were not !!!!. We were put in a quiet room on our own sat around a huge table where we couldn't really reach the contents of the cream tea without standing up and reaching over and had some spooky music playing in the background . All in all not the best Cream Tea experience we have had and we have had quite a few to compare with .

We've lunched at the Coed y mwster hotel four or five times this year. I take my 88yr old father-in-law out to lunch every Wednesday and have done so since his wife died 3yrs ago. In that time we have visited approximately sixty eateries within a 25 mile radius of porthcawl. The 2 course lunch costs £14.00. Of all the eateries we have sampled in the last 36months this is top of our list for the excellence of the food, the ambience and cleanliness of the surroundings and the friendly, professional and helpful waitresses and waiters. There are absolutely no minuses to this place. It truly is an amazing place in which to dine. The building and the grounds have a very relaxing atmosphere. This restaurant is well worth a visit and worth travelling a distance for.

Such a pretty spot to eat, and add in lovely food and good service and this is a great place for dinner. We arrived without having booked and the staff immediately tried to arrange the perfect table for us. The food was beautifully cooked, and very fresh - great salad, which is always nice - and the service was lovely. I guess it could be considered a little on the pricey side, but the quality makes the price well worth it.

I came with a group for lunch which was pre booked. Dietary restrictions meant I only had a main course which was lemon sole. I was shocked to see a little slice of fish presented skin side up on the plate. When I turned it over I discovered 80% bone and about two teaspoons of edible fish. The potatoes had a distinct taste which I did not find palatable and the carrots and green beans were lack lustre. There was no kind of sauce or dressing which might have improved the dish. Waiting staff were very good however.

I cannot understand why this place has so many good reviews - unless our meals were cooked by the bellboy! This was truly the most terrible meal I have ever had. I've had more enjoyable gastronomic experiences on EasyJet! We had just arrived and wanted a light meal so were pleased that we could eat in the bar. Service was pleasant and attentive. I ordered some Lamb Kofta Kebabs which were accompanied by a salad. The salad consisted of some iceberg lettuce, a few strips of red pepper and a couple of grapes. It looked like something that was thrown on the plate and when I tucked into the kebabs, I found that they were burnt on the underside. My friends ordered some chicken and fish goujons in chibatta. Chicken was dry, the goujons resembled fish fingers and both came with frozen chips. I can sum up the food in one word - awful.

We had not been to Elliot's for years, friends had recently been and had given it a good recommendation. I booked a Saturday night for five people at 8. We arrived at 7 and found the bar busy but still room for us to sit and have pre drinks. The bar is a really nice room with open fire and a good selection of drinks. We went through to the restaurant at 8 it's a nice spacious room. We all ordered food and we were then offered fresh hot bread and a pre stater. I ordered the lobster salad and the sirloin steak. They were both amazing but the star of the show is the steak it was huge and cooked to perfection. We were all really impressed with good service and great food.

I often find hotel restaurants a little staid - not Eliots, good choice of dining and wines prepared and served by a caring and courteous team. Thoroughly enjoyed then entire meal - Also as an aside I stayed at the Coed Y Mwstrwr for 3 nights and ate in the bar the other two - food was excellent as it's prepared in the same kitchen. Non residents also using the restaurant which was refreshing.

Had a three course meal here Friday evening in conjunction with a voucher scheme. Having been here before for a wedding we had an idea of the standard to expect, and were not disappointed. Reception was straight forward and after a drink in the lovely cosy lounge we went through to dining room for our meal. We chose our three courses well, as every plate of food we received was cleared.I have no complaints at all with Coed y Mwstwr. This was a meal for our anniversary and good value at this voucher price. Drinks were a bit on the expensive side, but we had saved money on meal , so all worked out ok. It is s long narrow road to the hotel.but worth a visit.

On September 18 I took my Mother for lunch at Eliots restaurant. When booking I asked that a small ramp be placed at the entrance, so that my mother would be able to use her "trundle truck" to access the lounge. No fuss, and the ramp was in place when we arrived. The receptionist seemed truly pleased to see us and confirmed that a colleague would be with us shortly. She was. In addition to her welcoming manner, she proved highly efficient and accommodating throughout the two hours there. The birthday card from the staff and Happy birthday on the desert plate were a delightful touchThe food was excellently presented and very scrummy. Simplicity coupled with taste. The overall bill was reasonable and my Mother's birthday was complete. Thank you so much!!!

We ate here on a Friday evening as they are one of the few places that accept the gourmet card on the weekend. Really lovely hotel, really lovely staff, really lovely food but will definitely NOT be coming again. This may seem odd given my positive comments above however what totally spoilt it for us was the ridiculous and pretentious practice of ..... charging extra for vegetables !! If you are ordering a roast beef main dish for example then you would reasonably expect it to come with something more than a tiny serving of potatoes. We had to each purchase a portion of vegetables for our little lunch time get-together and what arrived was a somewhat tired looking tichy-tiny bowl containing about five French beans, six carrot rounds, three minuscule cubes of turnip and about two equally tiny cubes of swede which would have cost about 15p max...... cost to us was a massive £2.95 or £3 (it was one or the other) for EACH portion. I notice this isn't displayed on the hotel web site when mentioning the "fixed" menu lunch price !!!Tea was served after our meal. One teapot for our group of four containing two tea bags, a hot water pot, jug of milk and one small and ordinary chocolate mint each ...... cost per person, a massive £3 per head. So, what with our vegetable portions costing an extra £12 and our cup of tea costing another £12 this added a massive £24 to our final bill just for these two items ....... OUTRAGEOUS ! We were absolutely happy with everything else and when dining in this lovely hotel you do expect to pay a bit more, however we felt totally and utterly ripped-off with these extras which was really sad because it was an otherwise great place. So, Coed-y-Mwstwr management team you do the sums here ...... you lost four people returning AND four people recommending your excellent restaurant and all because of charging outrageous prices for two items that probably cost you a maximum of 20p per head. Please don't try to justify these amounts by talking about overheads etc etc because we were already paying to dine there, we hadn't just come in to use your restaurant and facilities for a bowl of veg and a cup of tea !!!!I bet we're not the only customers who feel like this .... but we're probably the only ones to point this out to you in such easy-to-understand financial business terms. You really do need to sort this out because it totally spoilt what was an otherwise very pleasant afternoon for us plus it has earned you this negative review and all for you charging us an extra twenty four POUNDS for what cost you about eighty PENCE. Just where is the sense in that ????????? I feel like charging you for this valuable piece of business feedback and advice but here, have it on the house .... your management team are seemingly in need of it.

Excellent and interesting menu selection. Impeccable service and a lovely tranquil setting, perhaps slightly juxtaposed by the music choice a little. The highlight for me, completing the already excellent meal, was the Tiramisu - Truly something else, and as its one of my favourite deserts I've eaten it in lots of place! I don't want to say too much about what made is al unusual and special so not to spoil the surprise - but worth a visit just to sample this alone!Be sure to follow dinner with coffee - which comes with the most amazing homemade fudge.... Complete over indulgence of quality cuisine - and definitely worth a visit for a special occasion of any kind.

We took two friends from abroad for a meal and we were very disappointed with the occasion. A few less trips to Abergavenny required from now on !!The effort which had clearly been made to stand out from the usual GBP25 meal chain crowd was well appreciated and many finishing touches that set it apart. My husband, our 4 daughters and I visited this restauarant to celebrate our Ruby Wedding Anniversary, March 26th. We were warned that there would be guests arriving for a wedding evening reception starting around the time we planned to arrive and the lounge could be quite full. We were therefore really pleased to see that a seating area in the lounge had been thoughtfully reserved for our party. From then onwards the staff couldn't do enough, they were very attentive without being intrusive. The dining room was lovely and not crowded. (There was a party of diners using a private room). There was even a congratulations card on the table from the hotel and our daughters had arranged for roses to be placed in the middle of the table. The menu was not huge but saying that there was enough to choose from including venison, lamb, pork and beef as well as a fish dish . The food was beautifully prepared and presented. I had the venison which was tender and a joy to eat. Time was given between courses, we were certainly not rushed. The desserts were lovely and not to be missed. One of our party had the cheeseboard and she was very pleased with the cheeses with extra biscuits happily provided. Our compliments to the chef and all the staff. We will certainly visit again and can recommend this restaurant unreservedly.

Have visited this establishment a number of times. Now rebranded as 1832 Came for Sunday lunch on 07/07/24. When we booked we didn’t realise this date coincided with a 10K event. Travelling from Penarth and finding parking difficult meant we were a little late for our booking. Nevertheless we were greeted with a good welcome and very good service. The roast was well presented and tasty. It was of a portion size which enabled us to have a tempting desert. Well done team 1832 on a very busy day for you.
