Mediocre food, scruffy premises need a makeover, 1 member of staff pleasant, other 1 abrupt and would benefit from a customer relations course

Wanted to go elsewhere but the wait was around 15 minutes, we got here & there wasn’t much of a queue but it still took around 10 minutes to get served as there was only 1 member of staff serving, the cafe is located upstairs so not ideal for anyone with mobility problems. There wasn’t a great deal readily available from the counters other than soup, with items needing to be made to order such as sandwiches, I was impressed with mine, it was tuna, was plentiful & tasted amazing the coffee was nice but could have been hotter.

Our tour bus stopped here for lunch one day. There were some stairs to climb-didn't see a lift? Self serve style, service fairly fast and friendly. A few of us had Scone & jam-lovely. Saw some people with soup, and display of sandwiches made up. It was clean and convenient with washrooms and average prices. Handy to shop at the Mill store on the main level as well.

We had visited before, and so had some idea of what to expect. However this time we made a full day of it and visited the falls of Clyde after the restaurant. Arriving at the restaurant at 12 on a Monday we were pleased to find we'd got in before the busses and found no queue. The soup was hot and the herb scones remarkably light service was quick and the staff helpful. The electronic payment equipment went down for a short while and they explained calmly in good time, fortunately we had cash. The staff were being trained for a few minutes as we arrived, and I was impressed with the calm and coherent instruction being given, Most restaurants seem to let the new staff catch up as they go along, these all knew the answers to our questions, and often anticipated requests and checked if we had what we wanted. A relaxed and pleasant experience. Incidentally the chairs we were sitting in were much more comfortable than many I have encountered, several extra brownie points there. We often bring visitors to the World Heritage Site, and will no doubt be back.

We had lunch at the cafe whilst en route to Oban. We happened to arrive at the same time as a coach which meant a long queue for the food. I came in here for a simple tea with the wife. We had what they offered as tea for two and it came to an extortionate £12. Daylight robbery! Absurd. I honestly felt robbed. The scones were stale, the tea was weak and barely drinkable and the jam had white clumps that had formed on top, clearly old and needed replacing in the kitchen. I would recommend avoiding this place and heading to another establishment.

We were provided with a choice of sandwiches, two enormous scones with clotted cream and raspberry jam and two cup cakes. I chose a prawn mayonnaise sandwich which was made fresh for me, my husband chose coronation chicken...both served with a small side salad.. I chose coffee.. My husband asked for tea. Stopped off at the EWM Shop in Inveraray to pick up some goods. As always the shop staff were warm, friendly, chatty, helpful and knowledgeable. We decided to pop upstairs to the tearoom and got the opposite reaction. Couldn't care less staff who were in no hurry to serve, reluctant to explain when asked question about the menu. Once served, the tearoom was drab, in need of a tidy up and cold. Not good for a roadside coffee shop in December. No-one said hello and no-one said goodbye. Poor in constrast with the downstairs shop. Scallops were fresh but the sauce let it down and the bread was stale and expensive . Both in the end had fish and chips , that was two very small pieces of fish each , couldn't hardly see any fish , most likely frozen due to the texture and appearance . The hotel is an experience. The food is wonderful the beds comfortable and the cosy. Great place to stay for visits to the island. Looking forward to a visit in the summer. PLEASE finish the residents lounge.
