We came here for the first time recently and it was lovely. The food was fresh and tasty, and we didn’t have to wait too long either. Be aware that this is a casual restaurant, you queue outside and then may share tables with strangers - we knew this and think it adds to the charm of the place, but I thought I’d remind people! The staff could have been more polite but I can’t fault the food, go here for tasty and authentic Japanese cuisine.

I happened across this restaurant on my way to visit Magdalen College. I was lucky that I didn’t have to queue- being on my own meant that I was able to share a table with another solo diner. I ordered the salmon teriyaki and it came with a bowl of rice and some miso soup. The portions were plentiful and the food was very tasty. Service was friendly and efficient.

The taste is delicious, the quality of food and cooking is really good. However, the quantity is substandard ! The seating is annoying, after waiting for 40 minutes to be seated, we were offered to share a table with 2 other clients! I was visiting with my family (4 persons) and wanted a little privacy. Besides, we were almost pushed to finish our dinner within less than 30 minutes for them to seat another group! We all left disappointed and still hungry because the quantity of food was minimal and there was no point to order more because they wanted to seat another group. Also the service was welcoming but not encouraging. The prices are high relatively to what you get in terms of quantity.

If you want a Japanese restaurant dining experience don’t bother going here. However if you want Michelin star food and your prepared to eat with others at your table go here We went to sushi night and we thought we would get there early so we went at 5-00 pm and we’re astonished to see we had to queue on the street and there were a lot of Japanese people in the queue so we waited weren’t disappointed. The food was marvellous , service was quick and efficient. We spent an hour in there and when we came out the queue was even longer than earlier on. Extremely popular eatery and you can’t book but would suggest anyone try it . Totally exhilarating experience

All the food we ordered was extremely salty, soggy and almost inedible. After 45 minutes of sitting at the table my friend was still trying to eat her food and we were asked quite abruptly if we were almost finished as there was a long line at the entrance and they wanted to be seated! Unpleasant experience - not worth the wait or visit.

Clearly a very popular spot with locals; queue went for a while but location was lovely so didn't feel like a burden to wait at all. Once inside, the table was lovely and the atmosphere was fantastic. Service was prompt, helpful, and knowledgeable. The meal (my father ordered the chicken katsu, I had the salmon furai, and we split some pickled greens and sake) came to about £40. If we'd been trying to save we could have eaten a delicious meal for just around £20 for two, which is shockingly good. The food was superb and delivered to our table very quickly while it was still directly out of the fryer. Absolutely delicious: both of us cleared our plates. Know how to use chopsticks but I expect they might provide Western-style cutlery if you ask. But then what would be the point? I'll be returning again.

Really enjoyed our food - wholesome delicious plates of food and kind and thoughtful service. Remember, this is a small establishment with a limited home cooking style - Japanese food aligned slightly to a western palette; so don't go here if you are expecting Nobu style Japanese cuisine - this is simple fare with extremely tasty condiments and cooking styles - very nice portions and not too expensive. LOVE IT

We stumbled upon this whilst exploring the street of Oxford, it definitely off the beaten track, as there Wasn't much around. There was a fair few queuing already, the lady was good she pretook people order so when your table was ready the food wouldn't be as long of the a wait. There around 8-10 tables in side, so it a very cosy restaurant. I would say the food was delicious, my partner had the pork cutlet which tasted fresh and not remade and I had the shoyu noodle soup, which was flavoursome and yummy. The restaurant has a vibe if you go around to someone house, they cook you something very wholesome and delicious. very homely vibes, there definitely something for everyone. would I return definitely, as the food prices was very reasonable and the service was friendly and attentive. please note check website, as the restaurant only open few hours for lunch and dinner on specific days, so don't want one disappointed :)

I have only been to Edamame on a Thursday night (the only night they do sushi) and I keep meaning to go try their other offerings, but the sushi is just *so good* that I can't bring myself to go any other night. Hands down the best sushi I have eaten outside of Japan (for a reasonable price). We paid £55 for two (including service charge) and that got us a couple of beers, a couple of miso soups, and enough delicious sushi to completely satisfy two people with a reasonably large appetite. We tried two of the specials on that night (scallop nigiri and beef tamaki) which were both amazing. Yes, you have to share your table with other people, and yes if you don't get there at 5pm you *will* have to queue and wait as they don't take bookings. But it is completely, utterly worth it. If you live in Oxford and you like sushi then you need to eat here at least once, and if you're just visiting Oxford then try to make it a priority to come on sushi night. I can't recommend it highly enough.

I have never been disappointed when coming to Edamame. The menu at lunch is short, simple and excellent. The chicken karaage, tonkatsu and pork curry are all delicious. Whilst the space inside is small (or cosy!) and no reservations are available, I have never waited outside for longer than 15 minutes. So do queue! It is absolutely worth it. Having been to Japan this year I wanted to try this restaurant as everything I heard was good reviews. I have now been twice, for lunch and dinner, and this is what I think:First you need to consider the menu varies depending whether you go for lunch, for dinner, or on Thursday. For lunch you have more limited options but don’t hesitate to try the ramen: the stock is simply amazing and it’s a pretty big portion. If you want to try yakisoba you’ll also need to go for lunch as it’s not served for dinner. The dinner menu is broader but you won’t find some of the star dishes. Really recommended though is the chicken karaage and the edamame beans.Thursdays are the only day they offer sushi. The restaurant does not offer availability to book, and it’s open during very specific times only, so you really need to plan your visit as it’s always really busy (less for lunch than for dinner) and there will be a queue waiting outside. The place is tiny and you share table with other guests, so the less people your party is probably the easier to get in.

Edamame can be great, providing you abide by the rules. The opening hours are very short - it is never open later than 8.30pm, on Sundays it is just 12 - 3.30 and it isn't open at all on Mondays and Tuesdays. The restaurant is small and narrow and does not have more than about six tables. As a consequence, it does not take bookings and there is frequently a queue of people huddled in the very narrow doorway and sometimes stretching out into Holywell Street outside. If you do see this you are out of luck and should probably repair to the Turf Tavern over the road for a bit. Be prepared to be seated on a table with people you don't know and to be shifted part-way through your meal to another table if a party come in and want to sit together and if you are in a large group of people then chances are you will be asked to split and occupy different tables. The fact that the restaurant is small and the tables are close together means that it can get loud and echo-y and we learned more about one of our neighbouring diner's jobs than we ever wanted to (to be fair, she was a bit of a latter-day Stentor and her friends didn't get a word in).

My daughter is doing her MPhil at Oxford and convinced me that we should have lunch at Edamame. I’m Japanese American and frankly pretty cynical about Japanese cuisine outside of Japan. Most places do a fair job and few are great. My expectations for a place in Oxford were very low. I was amazed. We had to wait about 20 minutes to get a table - everything is focused on moving as many people as possible through this small restaurant in as gracious a way as possible. The tonkatsu ramen was a special of the day. It was one of the best examples I’ve had outside of Japan. Frankly much better than many versions I’ve had at home in California. I’ll definitely be back.

great food, I really enjoyed. But I was sick afterwards, because their rice contains vinegar which contains gluten. Now, the owner had told me, but also showed me review of somebody who said was very sensitive to gluten and was ok after eating sushi there. I was not, and was horrible. But being new to the celiac disease i trusted others, which was my mistake. If you are sensitive to gluten, do not go there on a sushi day. For everybody else, enjoy. the space is small, so not for intimate conversation. I shared the table with a couple who discussed their sex life with others in detail. I really did not care, but it is hard to space out if you are alone and in a small space. But ambience is nice, feels like somebody dining room.

Used to come to this restaurant and went back recently for lunch for old times’ sake. Food-wise it remains a better version of Wagamama in a smaller and more homely diner setting. The curry rice is pretty good. Normal quality you’d get in Japanese restaurants in London/ big Asian cities. It’s not exactly fast food but you are expected (and subtly reminded by the lightning speed at which plates are cleared) to eat promptly and leave promptly. Service is brusque but not rude. It is not cheap for what it is (see menu). You pay a premium for eating this sort of thing in Oxford where there aren’t that many good restaurants (which is strange given the food scene generally in the UK). Does the trick if you are in Oxford and have Asian food cravings. Otherwise not really worth it.

Last month on a holiday in England, my wife and I decided to visit the famous town of Oxford. In the evening, after spending time touring the university, we stopped at this restaurant. As others have already said, we found the service to be unfriendly. In the Netherlands, we like to take our time to enjoy dinner and company. In this restaurant, the service was rushed, and without charm. Also, we had a impression that they were anxious to have us leave as soon as possible. Ok, perhaps for a small restaurant this is understandable as they have to make money.

A friend and I stumbled across this place on the search for food between library sessions and wow were we impressed. We were seated and served very quickly despite how busy and small it was, and before ordering we were given tea which was adorable. I had chicken katsu which was delicious and a very generous portion. Would highly recommend and would definitely come again.

Edamame is very busy as it is very small, so we arrived upon opening to ensure we didn't have to queue. I had the chicken katsu which was amazing!! and it is a generous serving as it quite big, served with a soup, rice and sauce. They also provide you with a tea upon arrival which was very nice. The only thing people may perceive as a downside is that you have to sit on a table with other people; however it is perfect for a date as you get to sit very close so you can touch each other all the time if you want (which is what I like to do)

Was looking for a different experience and ask colleagues what they would suggest. A colleague suggested Edamame and, after visiting their website and TripAdvisor, I thought I would give them a try. As they don’t accept reservations just stopped by. Waited around 5 min and we’re greeted by a lovely lady who asked how many of us. Just me and my wife.

This is a small but authentic Japanese restaurant. Although everyone sits together on bench tables it has the atmosphere of a private house. The food is all freshly prepared and the flavours are amazing. I had the chicken katsu and the chicken was tender and served with miso soup and a dipping sauce, delicious. Avoid the chains and eat here instead but be prepared to queue.

We went there today for lunch and wanted to give a big shout out to the amazing staff. We had a voucher, which they hadn’t seen before, but they went above and beyond to make sure we could use it. They were so friendly and attentive during our meal and made some top recommendations. Even though the venue was at full capacity, the staff made every effort to check on us. They’re a total asset to the place. The food was delicious, as were the cocktails. Overall, a really lovely experience. Will 100% be going back!

The sushi was disappointing, lacking any real freshness or flavour, and the noodles were equally underwhelming—overcooked and far too bland. Overall, not an enjoyable experience, and I wouldn’t recommend it if you're after quality Japanese cuisine.

Not overly impressed with this place. Fancied a coffee with a gooey cake and ended up (after a long wait although they weren’t particularly busy) with an ok-ish coffee and a dry bit of sponge. The staff were not rude or unpleasant but didn’t go out of their way to be helpful despite seeing I was struggling with the tray as I had a bag and walking stick.

The sushi here was pretty good. We got a sashimi plate with many different things on it and really liked most of them. Also the cocktails were good! The hot sake came in a very interesting vessel.
