Eat Well in Cherwell

Been using this Chinese for the best part of 40 years. When it was known as the Bamboo Garden. It’s a bit hit and miss now. Food use to always be excellent. But the owners have changed. Probably the reason why. I still very much enjoy it. But the family doesn’t. So we don’t use them as much as we once did.

This place is hit and miss. I had a great king prawn chow mien once the best, on another occasion ordered special fried rice, the rice was very low quality broken grains of rice was shocked had never seen that before at Chinese I have at an Indian and I stopped eating there. Black bean dishes are watery. Prawn crackers are chewy. Really put me off going back since the bad rice. It’s or of my go to dishes. The owners are young, seem with it and super friendly so was truly disappointed. Although I had a great chow mien, one tends to remember their last experience.

Came to visit friends again in Banbury and decided to give this place a go again after a while. Best satay chicken I've had in a long time, much much better than before. The lady at the counter said that they've got new kitchen staff so they've made some changes. Curry was lovely and not too spicy - can't handle spice! My only problem though was that the chicken in the curry was in cubes, looked a bit weird to me but it tasted good. Very lovely staff though, they put extra garlic for our salt and chilli squid like we asked. They did forget to give us one of our sweet sour sauces but they ran caught us up again with an extra bag of prawn crackers and some fortune cookies. Overall still impressed!

Takeaway food was inedible.Prawn crackers stale and out of date. Chicken and pineapple (was not chicken ! Reconstituted meat cubes!) chicken satay a congealed dish mostly soggy lettuce…save your money and your health and use a different takeaway….worst I have had in over 50 years of Chinese food.

Please for the love of god don’t eat here. You will get sick. Me and my partner found mould on our housin sauce. When I rang up them just said ‘we’ll get another sauce.’ They were reluctant to give a refund and wanted to just refund the duck. Eventually they gave a full refund. The staff just wanted to argue with me and said it could of grown on the ride over which is absurd. I’m now feeling very sick.

Wanted a quick meal with some family before lockdown and ordered from here. The quantity you get for the price is amazing and the food quality is also very good for what you pay for: waaaay less than others in town. Friendly staff too. They also give complimentary prawn crackers sometimes and other free foods. Overall worth ordering!

Really would not recommend. “Prawn” crackers had nothing prawn about them. Everything just tasted deep fried, oily and not like any Chinese ever had before. Seriously avoid if you have taste buds and don’t want to feel like all you at is oil.

I've ordered here before and the food standards and environment wasn't best. I popped in recently and chatted with staff and was told that the place was under new management and the interior has been refurbished. Ordered some food from them and was pleasantly surprised with the changes! I was also told that there would be a slight menu change in the near future accompanied with some events going on. Really looking forward!

The food was the worst we have ever tasted and dishes that we have regularly from other places, bore no resemblance to what we have had before. The chicken was old and reheated, the prawn crackers were stale, the sauces were congealed and revolting. The chow mein was completely bland and lacking an any sort of flavour and it looked anaemic being far too light in colour. Even the egg fried rice which came free was overcooked and dry!! How can you get rice that wrong! I don't think the chef is Chinese or has ever been to China! They might claim to have the most extensive menu in Banbury but from our experience it was the worst take away we have both ever had the misfortune to taste!!
