Eastern Star in Coventry

Our usual was closed, so we gave it a go. Service was excellent and food was very good. For us it won't replace our usual one, but it will be used for variety. Update - our usual one has lost the crown. Recently they have not been so good, so we went to eastern star. Telephone order, parking available, excellent service, excellent food. Eastern Star is now first choice for our household.

Disappointed and disgusted!! Avoid. Please don’t waste you money. Rude and no customer service at all! Food is beyond disgusting

I tried this Chinese for a change as it was local and I haven’t tried them before. I had a chicken and prawn curry with egg fried rice the curry lacked meat and the rice tasted off. I ordered prawn toast aswell and it was basically fried bread. Disappointed to say the least

I hate giving small businesses bad reviews, yet here we are. First time going to this takeaway, as my 'usual' one was closed. Ordered 3 curries and a rice dish for my family, for collection. The positives: The lady I spoke to was polite, and I think the price was good considering the portion sizes (the curries are huge!) The curries are also very meaty. You get a lot for your money. The negatives: The curry sauce was bland, and what I found odd was each piece of meat tasted differently; as if the pork - which was dry and rather tough - was leftovers from a different dish etc. I didn't finish it as it left a very odd taste in my mouth. The rice I ordered for my curry was excessively watery, which I found off-putting considering it was supposed to be fried. I obviously didn't see what the kitchen was like, but the waiting area could do with a good clean. Lots of dust and cobwebs all over the ceiling, the floor is a bit grubby too. Perhaps the chef was having an off day when I visited, and usually the food is a bit better. Unfortunately I won't be reordering.

Too expensive for the size of the food purchase order and they don't take credit cards. Cash only is not really adequate in the preordained reset as a cashless society

great customer service food came very quickly and was very hot. delivery driver stayed 10 minutes longer just so that we could get our food delivered. with delivery wad just under 20 pounds and fed 4 of us, great place

Bar far my favourite Chinese takeaway in the city. Have been using for years. Staff happy and friendly- highly recommend

Used this take-away after a recommendation from a friend but didn't find it as nice as my usual. They only take cash, aren't on Just Eat, the duck was dry and diced rather than shredded. The rice and noodles were fine. The HK style sweet and sour pork was nice but the pork could be smaller and crispier. Free prawn crackers and spring rolls though. Not greasy food and it arrived hot.

Proper old school chicken curry with mushrooms and onions, my go to place as the food is spot on, and quick too 👍

There has been a negative trend in this cafe lately. It used to be better.

Had delivery last night usually not to bad but yesterday food was awful. Won’t bother ordering there again

3rd time we have used this place. Ordered 1duck and 1chicken curry with no vegetables. Once we got home the curries were packed with vegetables but a good amount of meat. However; I rang to complain about the fact we had ordered no vegetables and the woman argued back that I had not said "no vegetables". I had a friend with me who confirms my request. Eastern Star would not swap/refund or any help whatsoever. We will not be using them again (potential large family order).

Only ever got the Salt & Pepper chips quickly going past but damn are they good from this place!😍

Because they dont take card might put people off and the fact the front car park is 3 rd world and the inside foyer lookes very bland and dated but the food is excellent and of good quality so its worth a visit i think.

Pre ordered the take away and was ready on time hence the 1 star. the food was so poor. The chow-mein was full of soggy noodles,no vegetables and little meat. The curry was bland and no taste of curry,the sauce very stodgy and the riced hard and uncooked. the mini spring rolls were overcooked,dark brown nearly black and with no filling in. such poor food quality. If you advertise and sell a product then you should sell it at the standard expected. If anywhere expects customers to pay for poor quality food they will go elsewhere. The takeaway was quiet and no wonder at this quality.With no customers means no business means closure. If this takeaway does not improve and look at its quality to make customers return thizs will close. Its not cheap anymore for any takeaway food,so why expect poor food to be served and expect customers to return.ITS A DISGRACE. the

This place seems to have been open since Walsgrave on Sowe was a village and not part of Coventry. Lady Godiva was a regular ! Always has been a decent takeaway and very accommodating if you make little changes. Food is always piping hot and cooked to order. Excellent 10/10

This establishment is now my nearest Chinese takeaway after tai pan shut down. And ordered my favourite chicken curry, and it was delicious. Therefore, I'll be going back

Decided to treat ourselves with a takeaway Preordered our meals and collected. The food was ready BUT When I opened my meals The food was like warm,and was obviously prepared much earlier,so not fresh The duck with pineapple was such a disappointing choice. Full of pineapple but hardly anything else. No depth of flavour,or accompanied with any vegetables.Just a watery dish. My curry was bland,and needed more curry flavouring. The rice was hard,and no flavour at all. My spring rolls were overcooked,and greasy. Not worth the 17 pounds paid. Need to up their game if they need customers to return. Also the front desk assistant,is quite rude and abrupt when meeting you.

Tasteless food - difficult with beef curry! The meat was tough.

The shredded beef I had was that overcooked I either physically couldn’t break it apart, or it snapped. My mother’s meal was nothing like the description - according to the restaurant mixed veg means some onions & a slither of pepper. An evening of eating boiled rice isn’t what I had planned! I have now spent the past 20 minutes profusely vomiting thanks to their “food”. My mother has just got off the phone with the restaurant, who claim they won’t do anything because the order was two hours ago (I ordered at 5:30, rang the restaurant at 6:45) she refused to acknowledge the time for delivery, eating (attempting to eat the beef) and then vomiting time. After her being dismissive, and claiming nothing was wrong, my mother then said if she wasn’t going to even apologise she would get in touch with trading standards. Then miraculously the woman could no longer understand English, and handed the phone to a driver. The driver then announced a refund would be delivered, and she hung up.AVOID.

Food always nice and tasty Never had a problem and always very quick with most deliveries. If you have a voucher though that they have given for discount you can’t use it if you order through one of the food apps you have to ring direct

Only English pounds was accepted. They refuse Scottish Tenner... ! Food was average. Just another Takeaway. Nothing special but not bad at all. Would taste good when hungry.

Food was prepared and cooked fresh and it tasted great too! Outside parking space could do with some TLC.

Been using these guys as our local Chinese takeaway for a couple of years now. Amazing food usually. I always order the same thing, everytime without fail. This evening was no different. Phoned them up when the incorrect order turned up. She argued on the phone accusing my partner of lying about the order. Didn't offer any remorse for the error on their part or even a rectification... Shall unfortunately not be using again. The food may have been amazing every time to date, but the fact there was no apology or even offer of remedy says enough for me. Crying shame.

Best salt and pepper chips ever ! A generally big fan of them, but the Eastern Star ones are just out of this world!

Keep away, wrong order sent, should of been gluten free but wife was extremely ill. Reported them as person on phone denied that I asked for gluten free, when I asked driver he said yes it was gluten free. Liar and I gave him a fiver tip.Wouldn't give them a star but not allowed to comment without a star

Food was excellent and right next to the hospital- cash only though but the lady was kind enough to let me do a phone payment somehow!

As I said in the title. My husband really like eating from here and yes there is nothing wrong with it and we have never had bad food from here it just doesn’t float my boat. I prefer my sauce (from a chicken curry) to have a more yellow colour and be quite thick and for there to be enough sauce that I don’t have to order extra. This chicken curry is more of a brown colour you could see it was quite oily and there wasn’t much sauce. The chips were nice the chicken foo young was good and the egg fried rice was pleasant. Overall not bad, I just prefer a different takeaway.

Nice some of the dishes.Small portions(meat missing)plus delivery take ages.If you enjoy cold souce at your dinner go there if not just go somewhere else.

We ordered from.here last night chinese chicken curry really nice but to spicey the chicken balls are so moist and tasty really enjoyed them

Staying in a local hotel ordered via a well known web app - delivery took around an hour but absolutely on time to the minute they said. :-) Spare ribs (as per the previous post) were indeed excellent, Singapore noodles very good and the mixed satay ditto. No issues ordering again. Food was very nicely cooked and hot when it arrived - couldn't really ask for more tbh.

I knew as I ate my chicken fried rice that it tasted “funky” and instantly cringed as I recalled a previous debate I had with my husband after having a takeaway from here and being sick. One that started with “is this a bug or something we’ve eaten? He concluded it was the latter. The following morning I was pained with sickness. I’m not sure if this is helpful or whether it has any similarity to the reviews of others. But I do know I won’t take the risk/chance again

Have just ordered a meal that cost £38.00 and it was dry and tasteless with very little meat. I contacted the restaurant but all they offered was free spare ribs with my next order. I explained that I will not be returning again but was still not offered any sort of refund even though I have almost all the food left. I would not have given 1 star but it was the only way to leave a review. I asked to speak to the manager and was told he was not there and they didn't know when he would be there. I have no intention of ever ordering food from here again.

Nice Chinese take away. Become our favourite after the one on Stoney Stanton not being as good anymore. Little car park in the front so no problems picking food up.

Had pork chow mein - the noodles and veg were good, but the meat was almost non-existent! What I did get was a lot of large chunks of fat. Not nice.

We always get our Chinese from here but recently the quality of the food had gone down hill. The salt and pepper chicken wings used to be amazing but now really hard and tasteless. The chicken in the chicken balls and curry were really dry and chewy. Just not consistent anymore. Such a shame as we loved this Chinese. Going somewhere else from now on!!!

Ate a few bites and got binned Food was basic with no flavour What really had me put off from the start was the fact the chef was making coughing up flem and made me feel like my food had bin spat in. I would never eat from this DUSTY looking place again. 1 star food

Unfortunately under new management customers get less food for same price. For example set dinner for one person couple months ago offered 8 sweet and sour chicken balls. Now offers only 5. 2 slices of chicken disappeared from chicken chow Mein... Smaller portion. Prices still same or slightly chipper. Generally disappointed. Probably last time placed order there.

Under new management. The previous and retiring chef definitely took the recipe book with him. Food just not as good anymore.

Ordered 3 meals .. house special curry egg fried rice .. chicken curry egg fried rice and half a roast chicken with onions mushrooms and gravy costing £18.70. what I received wasn't my usual order it was disgusting .. got the two curries ok but only only quarter over cooked chicken and very soggy chips soaked in gravy and a bag of prawn crackers !!!... is Eastern Star under new Management ??? it's not upto their usual standard and I will not be placing an order with them again ... Disgusting none of us enjoyed our meals.

As above not sure if it's changed hands but my delivery was cold Had one last week and tasted awful Time to find a New Chinese Takeaway!!! Shame used this for years !!!!!

Used this takeaway for years, not sure if changed chef as last night takeaway not so good, chips were hard not fully cooked, curry sauce week did not look or taste the same & the yuk sung bland. None of it very enjoyable 😞

Best Chinese in coventry by a long way.

Had food from here on three occasions. Always fresh, and of good quality. Excellent. Best thing about Coventry! 23rd Feb What a difference a week makes. It's changed owners, an its now 1star. They have changed the salt and pepper chips, using rubbish chips and putting a few onions and chilli on top but still charging £3.80. Beef with mushroom poor. Msg added to food as was super thirsty after. Won't be back.

Me and my girlfriend have never been here before. First impression of them is absolutely excellent! For a few reasons... firstly, we ordered and then couldn't find a cash point near so it took a while, we phoned back to apologise and tell them the situation only to find they had cooked our order again fresh for when we were ready. When we did finally arrive he had it ready for us to take and we went and sat just outside before we started doing our paper round. He came out to us with an extra tray for us to use to share the food out and some plastic knives and forks and checked the food was hot enough and okay. The food itself was actually very nice as well, good quality and fresh :-) they made mine and my girlfriends day, what lovely people. 👍🏻

Theres nothing special about this chinese,basic tasting food most of the time ok but my last visit the food was dry and bland.

Use place regularly as in walking distance. Besides that I've never had a poor meal in all the years that I've used the place. Spare ribs are the best around and the service is friendly and efficient

First time I have tried this takeaway. The food was excellent and good value. the food was piping hot and you get loads of huge sweet and sour chicken balls in a portion :-)

Hands down best Chinese I've had in Coventry. Food was exceptional. The staff were brilliant. I'll be back again for sure!
