So i do not venture out when it comes to food ! Couldnt be bothered to go miles so went to my local !! Lets start Had chicken satay skewers , unfortunately not to my taste as they were fried and not in sauce ! Battered mini spring rolls (banging with bbq sauce ) Chicken in black bean - full of flavour chicken was perfect , nothing worse than hard chicken !! Was so tender and juicy , sauce great consistency plenty of it ! Chicken in satay same as above ! Chips nicely salted Bbq sauce nice and thick lots of flavour ! I would of gave it 5 but unfortunately the skewers werent for me ! Good quality food for a good price !! Young lady server was very friendly too !! I imagine it would be pleasant eating in

We had wanted to try this takeaway for a long time, so we took the opportunity as a treat at the end of a day out. My husband decided to play it safe (or so he thought) and stuck with one of his favourite Chinese foods, chef’s special fu yung. We collected our food and drove a short trip home. Unfortunately the fu yung was dry, bland and was severely lacking in the usual variety of meats and prawns that are in a special. My husband eventually had to add some sweet and sour sauce to make it moist enough to eat. Thankfully, my vegetable chow mein was reasonably tasty, in spite of being extremely salty, so at least one of us had an ok meal.

By far the single most atrocious Chinese food I've ever had the misfortune of tasting ! We ordered Singapore rice noodles, chilli ribs, chicken satay and sesame prawn toast. The noodles were dryer that the Gobi desert , a ball of noodle with a token splattering of dry bits stuffed down the side of the container. The ribs were smothered in something that resembled jam not a hint of chilli whatsoever. The one star goes to the sesame prawn toast the only thing we received that was edible. The satay was so over cooked it was hard on the outside and something like mattress foam on the inside(not that I have ever been so hungry that i'd eat my bed ) . Drive past do not waste your money , shocking !

I really didn't want to writethis review, but I have tried to phone, tried to email and tried to contact discreetly in every way I can. They're not interested. I really wanted to give my feedback discreetly to give them a chance but they won’t come to the phone (3 times over 2 days) won’t give me an email address and gave me a bogus mobile number to text. My message to the Facebook page was ignored. We’ve been buying our Chinese food from the Eastern Promise for years and we collected a takeaway from Saturday night. It seems you have made some changes and we were rather disappointed, which is a shame. So, here we go: Salt & Pepper King Prawns – overcooked, unseasoned and tasteless bullets in armoured batter; Lemon Chicken – bitter and unsweetened, overcooked and dry; Crispy Chili Beef – way too much vinegar in the sauce, chewy and no suggestion of crispiness; Yung Chow Fried Rice – dry and tasteless; Chicken Chow Mien – chicken overcooked, virtually no sauce, altogether dry and inedible; Sesame Prawn Toast – very good; Egg Fried Rice – very good. None of the food seemed to be seasoned properly and the typical Chinese seasonings (garlic, ginger, chilli, 5-spice) were conspicuous by their total absence. Also, spending £37 with you would normally get a complimentary portion of prawn crackers – not this time though. As you can see, this was not the experience we were hoping for and I am someone who very rarely complains. What is even more worrying is the total lack of interest in getting some feedback discreetly – you just don’t seem to care, so I’ve had to create a Tripadvisor account just to let you know!

We've been getting our Chines food from Eastern Promise since 2011 and we wouldn't go anywhere else. Lovely food, so many great options.

Keen to see if the “Eastern Promise” in Grampound remained as good as it had been over a decade ago, we booked in for a Saturday evening meal for two. It was truly awful. This was on a Saturday evening, midway between Christmas and New Year and we were the only customers in this dreadful restaurant (see photograph). Service was appalling, the ‘waiter’ was unable to provide us with either a blackcurrant and soda or a lager shandy - “We don’t stock blackcurrant and soda or shandy.” (us): ‘Do you have lager and lemonade?’ “Why yes.” (us): ‘Well that’s what you mix together to make a shandy.’ We chose the set menu for two people, but what arrived bore scant resemblance to that depicted on the menu. The first part of the starter should have been a delicious, hot, crispy duck. It was neither delicious, hot nor crispy. It was cold, mushy and felt as if it had been frozen, defrosted, heated, refrozen and reheated. The second part of the starter was even worse, so much so that at this point we gave up, paid for the appalling food already served and left. To add insult to injury, the ‘waiter’ and manager then tried to bill us for the cost of the entire meal. Please, please, please - if you are near to the “Eastern Promise” in Grampound and feeling hungry - drive straight past and eat anywhere else. It was the worst dining experience we’ve ever had. Truly abysmal.

Food was absolutely amazing. The best Chinese food I've ever had. Thank you so much. I will definitely recommend this place.

Just had a lovely meal for two here...very good value... excellent food and service...can't understand why we were the only ones there!

We have visited this restaurant on many occasions over the last 12 years and never had a bad meal. I travel all the time with my work and always try the best rated restaurants in the location in which I'm staying. This is an authentic Chinese restaurant that cooks perfectly and cleanly with a real culinary artistry. The only reason this restaurant isn't packed 24/7 is it's out-of-the-way location. Trust me, it is so worth the trip. Please support this amazing restaurant.

We had a takeaway for six of us. Their phone wasn’t working, so I couldn’t preorder however, it was cooked and ready within half an hour of ordering. All members of the family agreed that this was probably the best Chinese takeaway we have had for many years, perhaps ever. It was hot and very tasty. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them!

Had a really nice evening here with friends. We were the only ones in the restaurant during our visit but the takeaway was doing good business. My wife and I went for the set menu A. It was the most cost effective way to get a variety of dishes. To achieve the same variety outside of the set menu would have made it quite expensive. The quantity ample even for my appetite. Given the quantity if you were going as a group of people you could choose a dish each and have plenty of quantity and variety. It would have been nice if there were a couple of choices for the set menus. Above all the food was of good quality, cooked to order. It's the first time I have had crispy shredded beef that was actually crispy and not chewy!! The decor maybe a little quirky/dated but that's part of the character, and it was clean. The service was fine too, we were neither rushed, or had to wait for too long. We will likely be going back.

Went to the restaurant for Christmas Eve dinner. Great attention to detail. Lovely surrounding and the staff are very helpful and attentive. The food is superb! The best ever Chinese we have tasted! Excellent!*****!

We have eaten here many times over the years, mainly takeaway. The food is always excellent, delicious and so fresh. Vegetables are perfectly cooked, still maintaining their crunch. Never had a bad dish from here, and have to admit that the salt and pepper chips, spicy delicious gorgeousness, are definitely a guilty pleasure of mine! I never usually order chips from a Chinese, but these are not to be missed!

Booked here on a Saturday eve for a family meal started with crispy duck which was excellent and the had satay chicken sweet and sour Hong King style and beef in black bean all were delicious, indeed one of the nicest Chinese meals I have ever had the service was excellent and the restaurant has proper Chinese beer on bottle . All in all a very lovely meal with great attention and lovely food

Fuimos allí para una comida familiar. No nos decepcionó. La comida era excelente. Muy sabroso y bien servido. Personal amable y eficiente. De haber estado en muchos restaurantes chinos promesa oriental ha golpeado a todos ellos por su calidad. Sí no es barato. Pero la calidad habla por sí mismo.

Entramos en el restaurante y pedimos una mesa. Nos pidieron que sentarse en el área de bar y esperan un menú. Después de unos 10 minutos en esta confusa restaurante vacío, me pregunté por qué no podríamos estar sentado en la zona de restaurante. Él dijo, "usted primero ordenar comida entonces podemos establecer su mesa"... que también era muy confuso porque cada mesa había creado y listo. En este punto habíamos pedido comida y todavía no había sido sentó, y el camarero estaba charlando entre sus compañeros y no para instalar en la tabla '(teniendo en cuenta que eran todos de todos modos). En este punto yo creo que 25 minutos había desaparecido y que sólo había sido sentó en el restaurante de este lugar vacío. Pedir la comida demasiado caro (casi el triple de su precio del menú para llevar) que era normal en el mejor. Lo único positivo que podía tomar era que el camarero tenía un aspecto agradable, pero en cualquier caso fue eclipsada por la mala experiencia de ser sentó, y comida a precios razonables.

Had a set menu, attentive staff and the food was nice but was a little bland for examkw in the beef in black bean sauce its nice with a little chilli.

Ordered a Takeaway from the Eastern Promise . Staff very helpful and all the food was excellent freshly cooked and very hot .Will definately use again .

Picked a takeaway up from here food was cooked fresh piping hot not one thing to complain about the food was lovely as well as the staff.

We have used this restaurant many times for take away, the food is consistently good.The decor is a little tired inside but as a take away I can happily recommend them.

Like going back in time. Food was a very poor standard. The pancake rolls very fatty. The spare ribs were blandxand tasteless. The chow mein was very salty and below average. Would never recommend or return again.

I am spoiled for choice at home, where we have excellent quality restaurants and takeaways including, Italian, Chinese, Greek, Indian, Thai, Korean and also various burger outlets.This is the first time we have gone away and found a Chinese takeaway to rival that of our own in North Bristol. We had a takeaway order of delicious, crispy, densley packed Spring rolls (2) Yung Chow Fried Rice, Beef Curry and a special chow mein for just over £17. Plenty of food for the 2 of us and some left over for me for supper with a beer and the football! Excellent quality food and a friendly service from the nicely decorated, bright restaurant. I would say that as a take away, the food was good value. Looking at the eat in prices in the restaurant expect to pay about 25% to 30% more but if you are going out for a special treat it is still good value.

This is the best Chinese takeaway we have in a 15 mile radius of us. Food is always fresh, hot and yummy! Would definately recommend

This was my first visit and was pleasantly pleased friendly staff on arrival waited in a seating area by the bar where we were given our menus we were given time to read menu and then orders were taken after a short wait we were invited in to dining room very clean and nicely decorated starters arrived I had satay skewers which were delicious my friend had dim sums which she said was lovely we had authentic chop sticks but bowls and spoons were given for mains which was Hong Kong style sweet and sour pork delicious we also had a squid dish and a szchuan chicken all lovelyv we had coffee after and were given two refills for free all in all a lovely meal well priced defiantly value for money worked out at 25.00 each for 3 people including a couple of drinks

This is a lovely little Gem. It's always a delight to eat here. Annie the owner go's to so much trouble. She is just lovely. The food is always superb and plentiful. We reserved a table for 7 people & we found the food very nice. We had heard rave reviews of this restaurant & this is what prompted our visit. We were surprised at how empty the restaurant was for a Saturday night, perhaps it was the price. Would we go back, I don't think so as there are probably chinese restaurants with equally good food but not so expensive.

Nice to see the restaurant busy on a Saturday night, delicious food and friendly staff serving. Takeaway service was also busy but the service was still quick, would recommend to friends.

Food was good but the service was what made the night more enjoyable, the two members of staff that were working and serving our table on that particular evening were very polite and friendly, if there was anything we needed it was not forgotten or shrugged off. The takeaway service was busy so we had to wait a little longer for food but it was not a problem as we understand that takeaway is an important part of the business and the owners' livelihood. Thank you to the young male and female waiters who made the evening enjoyable.

Such a shame, but the Eastern Promise is now just another Chinese restaurant instead of being the special place it used to be. The fantastic, unique flavours have gone to be replaced by bog standard takeaway style food. It used to be untouchable for quality, quantity and excellent service, now all is very average, but the prices are now too high for the standard you get. We have been coming here for several years, but its now time to look elsewhere for fine Chinese food. Quite empty for a Sat night as well ,which doesn't bode well for the future. Very disappointed.

The lady who served us Annie is very sweet and kind. The overall service from all the staff was excellant we could not fault it in anyway. The food is so well prepared and cooked by the chef it is always first class. The decor is a tad tired but it is authentic to many reateraunts out in the far East. This is a special meal to have. We will save up, and go again.

Over a 20 year period I have eaten the best Chinese cuisine in Cornwall, indeed in UK at the Eastern Promise with owner Phil Tea always in attendance with excellent and knowlegable staff, always superb. This time, having moved away from the area for some years, I took my partner here one evening after telling her how brilliant this restaurant was, the food was diabolical, could have got better in any take away, staff were not bothered, when I asked for Phil I was told he had retired and had sold the restaurant. I should have realised as soon as I saw the menu, the prices were half what Phil charged and the food was 10% of the quality Phil would have served up, over the years when ever we had been to this restaurant it was always full, no matter what day it was, the way it is being run now, it will soon close, which is a real shame.

We visited friends for a week in nearby St Stephen and wanted to treat them to a nice meal out. They suggested Eastern Promise as they had eaten there on previous occasions. We were not disappointed! The service was good and the food was excellent. Thank you for a very enjoyable last night in Cornwall.

With plenty of parking space about five minutes outside St Austell this is well worth a visit. The staff were helpful and attentive, the environment was clean and warm most welcoming on a wet, cold Cornwall night.The food was excellent absolutely full of flavour, well cooked and presented. There was a good extensive menu to suit all tastes from very hot to mild all clearly indicated I would go again

Decided to try again after a nice meal three years previous, looked very promising after a warm welcome, placed our order and waited and waited and waited......45 minutes for our starter, 20 minutes for soup, 20 minutes for duck and 15-20 minutes for the mains. But was it worth the wait I hear you ask....NO it wasn't, all bar two of the main dishes lacked flavour, duck wasn't crispy, ribs were greasy with no sauce, bang bang chicken sauce was grey and appeared watered down and the hot and sour soup, although tasted ok did'nt taste like any hot and sour I had eaten before.The staff were all friendly but a couple of them appeared to be clueless, could we have some plates please and could we have some finger bowls etc etc.The problem I think was, it was New Years Eve and they were doing far more takeaways than restaurant service and I fear we got the short straw in the restaurant. The staff were very apologetic and even gave every table a bottle of wine as a thank you (for staying I think), but I think they should concentrate on one or the other or get more staff, its a shame, it used to be the best Chinese in Cornwall, now its just like any other, no better than your average takeaway.

Wonderful venue, wonderful food, lovely staff who cannot do more for you. Have been many times, had my wedding reception there it was amazing and great value. Annie and her family are all so professional and go out of their way to help you meal a night to remember.

Very friendly family run establishment - no frills decor - perhaps lacks a little character internally but the food was delicious.

We paid another visit to Eastern Promise, after previous visits which were also excellent.The service is efficient, the food is superb and its a great dining experience. They also do take aways, which are a class above others in the area(though slightly more expensive) Its a quality chinese restaurant not an all you can eat type, and is a little more expensive but in my opinion its well worth it.

Lovely homely atmosphere, very welcoming and friendly.Food is always superb with generous portions and excellent quality.The service is always good, nothing is too much trouble.Well worth a visit.
