Wongs in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

I've been a customer of Wongs since the 90's but yesterday was probably the last time I bother. I ordered my food at 8.20 and was advised it would be 20 - 30 minutes tops. At 9.15 I phoned to ask where my order was and was advised it was on it's way. It arrived about 5 minutes later but when I dished it up everything apart from the rice was stone cold and inedible. I'm assuming they forgot to send the order out for delivery and it sat there until I phoned up at 9.15 reminding them. I'm assuming this as the rice was hot and nothing else was so they most likely swapped the rice for a fresh, hot portion before sending the order out for delivery and most likely assumed the rest was still hot which it wasn't. By this time it was getting late and I had little other option but to make a sandwich and go to bed! I phoned them back to advise that all the food was cold apart from the rice and the lady just said they were busy. I understand they can be busy but you can't excuse delivering COLD food to regular customers. The food cost £22.00 and as a good customer I even tipped them £7.50 on top of that as I hadn't checked the order was hot before taking delivery and I shouldn't have to should I? It's a shame as I love their food but they didn't even offer to re-cook the food and expected me to eat cold Chinese food. Asian Wok it is from now on!

Hit and miss with quality but when it's good it's really good

Telephoned order through for group of 6, collected & paid cash (Wongs request customers to pay in cash). Each dish was delicious. Recommend the house special fried rice & king prawn curry. Staff pleasant & food packed carefully with brief description on each lid for easy identification.

Just paid £4.50 for noodles for my son. Some were even stuck together in clumps; bonus...He usually has prawn crackers too but got them from Sainsbury's as I can't warrant paying nearly eight quid for noodles and crackers.

Fantastic service but note that it is CASH ONLY! Food cooked to order and you can see the kitchen which is clean and uncluttered.. Food was lovely! Really enjoyed it!

Worst green curry I've ever had .looks awful and tasted the same as it looked didn't eat more hen a mouth full . What a waste for money that was never again

Always good food and the noodles are the best.

Have used this Chinese for 18 years, 95% of time it's been delicious. New management a couple years ago, and food has not just declined a little, but hugely! Have tried couple times since takeover, incase it was as they got on their feet, and instead it's got even worse! I don't normally do reviews, but was so disappointed in the quality of the food this last time that I felt compelled to write. Let's hope they take note and seriously improve quality and cooking style. Wish I had taken photos, but didn't think of it at the time.

Food is good. The shop however is slightly stuck in the stone age seen as you can't pay using card or online. Which is quite annoying these days and results in you having to travel, which when your hungover as most of us are on the weekend it becomes quite an effort :).

No surprises on the menu, as it's standard Chinese takeaway fare, but the food is consistently good and the staff are friendly and efficient.

Big portions, tasted fresh, not greasy. A tiny bit over priced, but you get what you pay for sometimes I guess. I really enjoyed the szechwan beef. Would return.

The second worst Chinese food I have experienced in the UK! Bland and tough. First and last time to try it.

Friendly staff, good food and reasonably priced. Definitely one of the better Chinese I have tried. Can get a bit overstretched at times but it is usually worth the wait.

Honestly, we were very disappointed. The food was not very nice. It was very bland and the rice in particular (both egg fried and special fried) was over cooked and very starchy, far too much turmeric used as well. The salt and pepper chips were disappointing with a few pieces of onion and I think it was 4 slices of pepper. Soft noodles were crispy where they has obviously cooked far too long in the wok. One good thing was the chicken in szechuan sauce. Although we asked if it was crispy chicken ( which we were told yes) it came as fried chicken breast, but on the whole it wasnt a bad dish and gave my review its second star. Sorry that this is not a great review but it's an honest one.

New owners hay! nothing tasted like it was freshly cooked more like reheated. the chicken balls were all batter so kids didnt eat curry was bland fried rice tasteless and chrispy beeef and chicken you could chew for a week and still be chewing ! prawn crackers were burnt and the bags are alot smaller ! placed are order in store and was ready in 3mins flat.

Great food, huge variety on the menu, reasonable prices and great staff. The only real problem is the lack of disabled wheelchair access both to the takeaway AND the restaurant. I have been invited to many events in the restaurant but have been unable to attend due to this little problem hence the three stars.

Having lived here for 4 years we have always found Wongs food lovely and the prices are reasonable too. We have always found the counter staff friendly and welcoming...until recently where they have taken on a few younger staff aswell which seem to be rather rude and unknowing... apart from that service is still good and we will continue to use them!

Well I remember when this place replaced the old kebab shop many many moons ago. It was a very good addition to the town. Well since new ownership recently its no so much. The food quality, amount has reduced but the price has rocketed. Greed? The menu has not changed and the Orient opposite has not increased its prices so I can only assume the new owners are trying to capitalise on its old success and trying to rip people off. well this is one family who's custom they have lost. Go across the road, spend less eat more better quality. We live close by so not a visitor but a regular user.

I have always found the food to be of a high standard - take away or eat in. The restaurant is pleasant and the service good.

Had a take away for my brother's birthday, and everybody devoured the food and really enjoyed it. No complaints here!.

I have had many excellent meals from this take away over the years but this was the first after ownership change. The prices have increased greatly and the food quality has diminished. Batter was stale, sauce very salty and chicken meat had a strange texture, perhaps reconstituted meat? Needless to say i won't be returning

Takeaway menu has good selection of dishes. There should be something to please everyone. Hot and spicy dishes are indicated on the menu. Most items tried have been tasty and good value. Portions are generously sized and suitable for sharing. Create your own Chinese Banquet. Staff are very quick but sometimes it is necessary to wait in line. If you just can't wait you can phone in your order and collect it from the shop. NOTE: Wongs is CASH ONLY! They do not accept credit/debit cards.

Thought I'd give Wongs one last try seeing as the last few meals have not been very nice and once again it is still not very nice. Chips near in raw. Batter on the chicken soggy and the rest tasting like it was left over from the weekend. I don't expect the new owners to do things the same way but do expect the same standards. Shame.

My hubbie and Son used to come here on a weekly basis and thought that one evening we'd try something new. Son ordered a bowl of noodles, veg and chicken. He thought that it tasted like raw sewage! We never go there to this day.

Set in the village of torpoint it was a fun ferry ride over from Plymouth that we went for a midweek buffet style meal. With a great varied Chinese menu the food was cooked to order and tasted great

This is the only Chinese takeaway that I use in the area. Never had a problem and food is always as you expect. Pleases the whole family. Large orders are always timed well so that all of the food items are still hot when served.

Have used this takeaway for 25 years,and it never dissapoints.staff lovely,food very good,fast service and reasonably priced.Have never tasted better anywhere in the UK.Always glad to get home and have a Wong's.Big thanks to Ken and his team.

Best Chinese Take away in Torpoint.

Decidimos pedir desde aquí para el cumpleaños de mi hijo. Tienen una amplia variedad de platos cantoneses y creo que no hay problema en encontrar un plato para incluso el más exigente de los que comen. La comida era deliciosa y abundante comida para llevar). Hay un restaurante, si uno prefiere salir a comer he probado antes y sin duda volvería. Buena comida china cata

We had take away from Wongs for the first time on new years eve and didn't find the food that tasty. 1 of the 6 dishes we ordered was half a duck for about £19 but they only provided 6 pancakes to go with it which was totally insufficient.

We really enjoyed our meal at Wongs. The food was freshly prepared and authentic. The crispy duck with pancakes was delicious as were the other dishes we ordered. The waitress was very friendly and made us feel very welcome although we arrived quite late in the evening. The only complaint was that it was cold in the restaurant and it could have done with the heat turning on. Other than that we would definately recommend Wongs if you are looking for good Chinese food in Torpoint.

Have used Wongs for some time now food good service staff friendly. Never had an issue.Shame you get charged to use your credit card the food is not cheap why charge twice for a service disappointed.

Nice chinese, often busy take away. £2 for a bag of prawn crackers!! Only place that actually charges for these. Surprising after already spending £16 for 2 noodles and 1 x sweet and sour chicken balls. Food not bad but overpriced.

We popped in here when on a business trip for some dinner with no preconceptions or previous experience of dining here. Although the decor inside looked a little tired the food here is excellent and fantastic value for money. The lady who served us was a fantastic ball of energy who made us smile all through the meal. I can fully recommend the sweet and sour chicken and prawn toast both of which were delicious.

Awful the chips were stale , the rice tasted like it was microwaved worst food I've ever tasted.. could of got a better Chinese from icelands .. wouldn't ever recommend this place. .. would get a full refund if I could but at 10.30 at night pointless arguing when they don't even understand your order let alone getting the food at the right temperature.. if you fancy albino chips, - and pink chicken balls(was it even chicken?) and half a tub of sweet and sour sauce.. never mind the egg fried rice which is from a packet.. 2 for a £1... then this is the place for you!

We generally eat from here every few months as a treat and have never had a bad meal. We call in order and its ready when we arrive every time.One can only surmise that the bad reviews are from competitors.

We have only ever used Wongs takeaway service and never had reason to complain. We have used Kenny Wongs for many years.

I seem to be posting regularly about Wongs and this is true because we keep coming back, the food and service are BRILLIANT!

We went for a family cleabration to Wongs Chinese resturant we were served by a lovely bubbly chiniese lady who was really great and made sure we had everything we wanted. The food was really nice, i have found that eating in the resturant the food apears to taste better than when ordering a take away. Not sure why? It it reasonably priced and for us it is very local so not far to travel.

Staff are always pleasant, food is lovely we have our regulars but have tried different items before and never been disappointed, being able to make a telephone order makes life easier too!

The food was great in the restaurant shame it took half hour to get a drink and then 45 minutes before our food there was one waitress run off her feet she was lovely and did make me smile but after 2 hours and not once did anyone ask if we wanted a second drink we all were glad to leave would of been quicker ordering it take away then losing 10 deposit because 2 people couldn't go even though there was no room for anyone else to sit near us was disappointing so food amazing yummy but service times very poor take away is the way forward.

Was taken to Wongs last week,the ribs & prawns for starters where amazing,main courses were all delicious, Jojo was delightful &nothing was to much trouble.As a group we were all very happy when we left...We live in Portugal but will be back on our next visit to Plymouth....can't wait

we had thier mid week banquet and it was excellent. Freshly cooked to order unlike most banquets and the choice is huge. The salted andcspiced spare ribs and king prawns are exceptional if you like a bit of a punch.

Been to the buffet a few times, sometimes it was okay, others it was terrible. its pick of the draw.The waitress is lovely but her english isn't great. the table next to us asked for Salt and received soy sauce! I was really annoyed when I booked a table for 10 and we were told we had to pay a deposit. I could understand if I hadn't been there before, but as I said we are frequent visitors. They also 'forgot' to knock the deposits of the final bill. There was also a 10% service charge, which is also ridiculous for a buffet. We had to ask for refill multiple times also. My food was very watery to the extent it tasted like water! When I mentioned it to the waitress she said its supposed to be like that - but its never tasted like that before? They've lost a valuable customer.

Just had a takeaway from this Chinese with a captive audience, and they are taking advantage indeed. Crispy shredded beef was flabby and soft and the barbecue spare ribs were overcooked and dry. I ordered house special fried rice but when I got back home, it was missing from the order and I had two trays of the crispy beef, which really was two trays too many of what is usually my favourite dish. Prices are on the steep side too, so I suspect I will not be back. Disappointing.

This was a family meal out with grandparents, who recommended. It was okay with very typical Chinese fair. We opted for the 'all you can eat' menu, which was plentiful so if you like quantity rather the quantity, you can't go wrong. It appeared to be family run and they are quite friendly and we did enjoy the meal but I would not describe the food as memorable.
