Dunvengan Hotel Dining in Highland

We booked a meal expecting great things and with a hefty price tag we thought we were in for great treat. This restaurant over promises and definitely under delivers in so many ways. We had the 5 course set meal at £65.00 per head excluding wine. Very expensive considering that for the same price in Manchester, we can go to James Martins restaurant and have a 4 course full tasting menu with full wine flight for £59.00 per person, and a far better experience. We found the very small shared plates were far too small. Example... one course was a scollop that was sliced into 4. Over all lacking in taste and quality. Over promises, definitely under delivers.

Simply “wow”! This was actually our third visit (in each of the last 3 years), but each year it gets better. Today (my birthday) we had the 5-course tasting menu (including wine flight for me)… and it was simply sumptuous! Every course was exquisite - with the theme of smoked/stone cooking - but across vegetables, fish and meat. Simply amazing. The wine choices were also really interesting. Better still (if anything can be) was the ambience and staff. The restaurant was full with a real buzz… and all the staff were friendly, professional and added to the experience. We were asked if we wanted to visit the kitchen - of course - and had a lovely chat to the chef and his son. What an establishment! We also had our 2 1/2 year old black lab with us - it’s truly dog friendly - and everyone made a fuss of her. So good was it, that we have booked in for next year - in 12 months’ time!

Our experiance here was the last Tuesday in September 2024… it was superb. From arrival to leaving we were looked after very well… the restaurant was full with no room for walk-in’s and we watched and lost count of the many who couldn’t get a table. After eating our food it was understandable as to why!! The food was to a high standard and bursting with flavour. Although portions were small by the end of the evening we were agreeably full. We had two dogs with us which they catered for, even bringing a dog bed for them. Wine selection was good and complimented the food.

Wir hatten das 5 Gänge Menü vorbestellt, die Dame am Telefon sagte uns, das wir wahrscheinlich nicht unseren Wunsch nach einem Austausch der Fleischgerichte in Fischgerichte bekommen können, da der Vorlauf von 24 Stunden zu gering sei. Wir haben das akzeptiert, meine Frau ist kein Fleisch. Aber es kam anders! Statt Lamm hatten meine Frau ein großartiges Gericht aus Miesmuscheln und Austern, in knuspriger Hülle gebraten. Statt Steak, bekam Sie ein saftiges gegrilltes Fischfilet, mit tollen Beilagen und einer sehr schmackhaften Sauce. Alles war auf den Punkt, die Zubereitungen auf Feuer oder Holzkohle waren deutlich aber nicht penetrant. Das Abendessen war außergewöhnlich und stimmig. Nach dem Essen durften wir noch einen Blick in die Küche werfen und ein Schwätzchen mit der Küchenchef halten. Das war die Kirsche auf der Torte. Die Grill und Feuerstation ist atemberaubend. Wir können das Restaurant absolut empfehlen, danke an das ganze herzliche, umsichtige und aufmerksame Team. Dazu kommt das gute Preis Leistungsverhältnis.

Exceptional dinner! We reserved the chef’s 3 course set menu and it was beyond our expectations. Every bite was exquisite! The portions were small, however we walked away full and not overstuffed. I have nothing negative to say about our experience. Service was also perfect!

We really enjoyed the vegetarian five course menu. A lot of thought had been put into each dish and the food tasted so fresh. The staff were also friendly and polite.

Went in for a hot drink and a piece of cake. Had a good range of options for cake and did a lovely hot chocolate. We arrived just before 3pm and got seated, but were told they were only doing hot drinks and cake (which is fine because that’s what we wanted) and they were shutting at 3.30pm, so make sure you check their opening times as they stopped letting people in at 3pm and were only doing takeaway. Also have a lovely little eco friendly shop within the restaurant with a nice range of stuff at decent prices!

Forget the Michelin stars and get this 5 star, 5 course tasting menu for around £65. Totally insane. So much food, and so beautifully cooked, presented and served. Laid back feel with professional service. So incredibly friendly and a gin list to die for. The food sells itself, all cooked over fire - smoked, or flamed, or cooked over embers - absolutely amazing. The scallops are incredible. We had a chat to the chef and his son and they explained how they are twice dived to be able to grow. They were huge! This place has all the right ingredients for wanting to feed people with amazing food whilst looking after our earth and leading the way in avoiding wastefulness. What a wonderful meal. We feel so privileged to have been able to visit. Thank you so much and thank you to the wonderful host and lady of the house! You were all incredible. Thank you.

The family that run this restaurant truly seem to be inspired to make sure all their guests have the perfect experience. They definitely succeeded with us which is no mean feat given the challenges of running a hospitality business in a remote island location. Friendly and professional service, delicious food (higher quality than many higher priced restaurants in UK cities) off-menu treats for our daughter and an invitation to see the amazing grill in the kitchen. I am in awe of the energy they must put into creating this atmosphere night after night. Thank you, we had the perfect evening.

there's nothing bad i could say about this place. from the nibbles when we got there through the choices and quality of the starters, mains, desserts and wine absolutely everything was top notch, great flavours, really well prepared and presented. the service from everyone we came into contact with was friendly, knowledgeable and a credit to the restaurant

We went for dinner when staying nearby. Set price menu, something around £37 for 2 courses, £48 for 3. Four choices for each course. Bread and nibbles (included) were brought to our table before our drinks order had been taken, and everything just carried on in a bit of a rush. We were finished our two courses in less than an hour from when we arrived! When we're paying this sort of money, we would like to string out the evening a little more. We both had the oatmeal crumbed oysters to start, and for mains, I had the seabass, my partner had the pork. All very pleasant, cooking over flames seems to be the signature style here. I could have done with much more salsa verde with my fish - what is it with these tiny smears of sauces on plates? There's never enough to taste, let alone add flavour to other elements of the dish. We appreciate what they are trying to do here, but felt our meal was a bit expensive for a rather short experience. Slow down please!

Amazing food, drinks and service. We had the lobster, and the sticky toffee pudding was some of the best I’ve had anywhere in the UK. Highly recommend.

My wife had a 3 course vegetarian meal, and loved it. I had local seafood, and it's the best meal I have had over the past 10 days in Scotland. The chief knows his trade, that's for sure. Local, twice dived scallops were my favorite, along with the locally caught Sea Bass, made for a Divine dinner. The staff was very helpful and professional, while also being friendly.... After arriving in Skye for a week I noticed a menu for the Dunvegan and was very excited to try the fire restaurant so called to book but they were fully booked all week. So today we visited for lunch and were not very impressed. The female who appears to run the team of staff isn't very customer friendly and doesn't speak, is it because I have many tattoos and a shaven head... Hmmmmmmm..... Restaurant has a nice feel to it though a bit shabby, skirting board needing attention and could do with a lick of paint. I ordered beef kebab which was quite nice, the beef was shredded and well cooked but a tiny portion My wife ordered pork ribs which were advertised as slow cooked then finished on the bbq but in reality were tough and chewy. She couldn't eat them so I swapped with her. The waiting staff were nice enough but not very attentive, big shout out to the waitress from Bristol who was fantastic, brought a drink for my gorgeous dog and chatted and showed us pics of her kids wedding's and dogs, she is so lovely. Anyhoo, overpriced, hyped up, small portions... We had been going to have a dessert but nobody asked if we wanted one, and £9 for a glass of wine, pretentious, we won't be back. Had a much nicer meal for a lot less at the Cuill Cafe yesterday. Oh, and when I went to pay mute woman didn't even speak and summoned one of her minions to deal with us

Booked 4 nights in advance, limited menu, we ate scallop for stater which was literally just 1 with 4 cheese covered muscles, then sea bass and turbot which were beautiful, really tasty and good sized portions, the only negative was the pud - peach Melba which was just part of a peach plus ice cream and cream which we thought was poor. But overall v good and reasonably priced.

The food was superb, better than our three Chimneys dinner 2 nights before. The oysters were fabulous, enormous and exquisitely prepared. I loved the tiny breadcrumbed mussels as well the dry aged rump had so much flavor cooked over the wood fire- and a very generous serving as well. About 3 times the size of the 3 Chimneys rump steak. The cheese players were also. Very generous and delicious. One person found the goat cheese salad too strong. But others swarmed in and devoured it- but it was a very ripe strong tasting cheese. The pork was tender and delicious. The sticky toffee pudding astonishingly delicious. Best I have had. The staff were attentive and the ambiance delightful. We peeked into the kitchen and met the talented chef and his sons who were ably assisting him. The grill set up is spectacular.

We were on holiday on Skye and I made sure we booked ahead to make sure we got a booking for our silver wedding anniversary. We had an excellent meal, we went for the 3 course. Couldn’t fault it. Staff were very attentive and we didn’t feel rushed at all. Definitely one to try if you are in the area. In a beautiful location.

The Dunvegan Hotel has new owners so if you tried it in the past and were disappointed, give it another go. You’ll be glad you did. Had a great lunch here today. Excellent food, reasonable prices and pleasant staff. So pleased to see this place restored to somewhere to be proud of.

We happened upon the Dunvegan Hotel cafe while looking for the turn to the lighthouse. We were hungry and they made us feel welcome. My wife and I shared the Fabulous macaroni and cheese with garlic bread - to die for!! We least happy both with the meal and the experience!

We are foodies and really dislike chains, fast food, and bar food. We had not called ahead to the other smaller but well known restaurants so a local suggested the hotel. We did not expect much but we were VERY pleased. So far the best fish and chops in Scotland, I think it is the batter but the clerk told us they are very careful about how the source the fish. Also the Cullen Skink was very tasty. This is a hearty or comfort food stop.

Newly reopened with new owners and now called The Dunvegan. We went on two occasions for lunch and dinner and both were excellent. Service 1st class and lots of local Skye produce on the menu. We didn’t have a cake but they looked amazing. They have their own in house baker. Live Scottish music in the bar from time to time. Dogs are welcome in the bar area.

Wir hatten, trotz schlechter Bewertung, uns entschlossen dem Restaurant eine Chance zu geben, doch leider können wir die schlechte Bewertung nur bestätigen. Das Personal war apathisch, emotionslos und komplett desinteressiert. Das Essen war einfach aber gut.

Il ne faut pas être regardant sur l'entretien mais bon il faut parfois se lancer ... accueil simple et agréable de la patronne. Plats consistants ...et surprenants , pour ma part , macaronis avec fromage fondu et frites et quelques légumes tout de même ....et bien c'était bon pas diet mais bon. Je pense cependant que l'entretien et l'hygiène pourront en freiner certain.

Questo posto ci è stato consigliato dai proprietari della struttura dove abbiamo soggiornato a luglio 2018. Vedendolo da fuori non eravamo particolarmente entusiasti, invece ci siamo dovuti ricredere, se da una parte la struttura è sicuramente datata il cibo è ottimo ed il personale molto cordiale. Consigliate le zuppe del giorno, tutti i piatti a base di pesce e la torta al cioccolato. L’unica pecca, peraltro riscontrata in tutti i ristoranti scozzesi dove abbiamo mangiato, è il menù con poche pietanze tra cui poter scegliere.

Serving staff were very nice but the food was nowhere near the standard it should be. Parts were cold and obviously not fresh. Would give it a wide berth.
