We liked this hotel a lot. Staff were friendly. The room was clean, spacious and modern. The location is nice, with some good walks nearby with beautiful views over the loch and river. The dinner we had was the only slight disappointment: the two kinds of steak we had were both barely lukwarm and not very tasty. The rest of the meal was ok, the service again friendly and effective. Breakfast was excellent as far as the Continental offering went, we did not try any cooked dishes. All in all, a pleasant experience.

I visited this restaurant with my wife and three adult children last night (17 July) having booked a table for 5 of us for 1945. We arrived on time and the restaurant looked very good and staff were very pleasant from the outset. After about 10 minutes a waiter took our drinks order and these arrived at approx 2015 which maybe should have been our first inkling that things were not going to go well. While we were waiting for drinks we ordered our starters and main courses. I should outline that this restaurant has a rather expensive menu with most main courses costing approx £30 and starters around £12. For starters we ordered a mix of salads, soups and prawn dishes and these all tasted lovely when they arrived (about an hour after we arrived) although I would say that the Atlantic Prawns starter I had was quite small with small prawns in I presume Marie Rose Sauce on 3 small toast pieces and some chutney. As I say, it tasted good but I did feel I'd have had a better portion for £12. For main courses we ordered steaks and salmon dishes and I'd love to tell you how they tasted but since we hadn't received them by 2145 we gave up. We complained to management who took it very well - and paid only for our drinks, however since there are few options in the area and none open at that time on a Sunday evening, we actually left the restaurant hungry. This purports to be a premium restaurant in a very nice hotel, but the lack of information from the staff and management meant that we had no idea how/when we would be served and I would be concerned as a guest visiting the hotel as most of the tables around us were suffering the same long delays and non-delivery of food and these were residents at the hotel. i would like to return one day as I expect the food would have been good but the service last night does not justify the premium price tag for this restaurant and whatever chaos in the kitchen or in the restaurant that caused last nights issues need to be resolved urgently before people start to avoid. We opted for

We arrived at the Dunalastair after a 10 mile hike from Fortingall. It was wonderful to check into a modern, comfortable room and then enjoy top-notch food in their restaurant. The cod special was amazing! Vegetables were of highest quality and imaginatively used. The outdoor space is beautiful and will be great in warmer weather.

The restaurant cooking standard was poor compared with the overall high quality of the rooms and excellent service both front of house and in the restaurant. Almost every item in the meals was overcooked. For example scallops (labelled "King" but small "queens") were so overcooked they were like rubber. A pigeon breast was cooked to the colour and texture of shoe leather. A haunch of venison had clearly been sliced before resting under a salamander and therefore dry and again "over". Same again with a steak. Even the breakfast bacon was hard as it had been standing for long. There was a great effort to look "high end" with edible flowers etc. but this does not compensate for the cooking skills. Overall they have an unchanging and extensive menu - which I think was part of the problem. The actual elements were good quality but to serve the number of covers they clearly had to precook many items and hold them before plating on order. I would suggest a smaller, variable menu and cooking to order. This would then come up to the excellent features and service of the Hotel.

Three friends and I visited for a late lunch on Wed 28th April, We were cycling in the area and were received very warmly. They have a very comfortable lounge where food is served. The light lunch menu was just what we were looking for - a refuel but not too much to be detrimental to cycling. The soup was excellent and the Croque Madame delicious. Service was attentive and professional.

We enjoyed two excellent dinners at the Terrace Restaurant. A special mention for our young server Harry who provided excellent and friendly service he was open he was a recent start but his desire to be the best he could be shone through and he had a very positive personality which made the whole experience very enjoyable. Management take note he is a keeper!

Avoid at all costs, I asked for a carrot cake to be heated( I have done this numerous times before) first guy said we can’t (I think he was training- so no problem) other guy said yes let me take it for you. The coffee took 5 to 10 minutes so carrot cake was cold, I asked for a re-heat and was refused after spending £18 plus for 2 coffees and 2 cakes. He said the chef recommended it cold - I can’t eat cold cake as it’s too dry and I have no saliva due to cancer treatment - do I feel like explaining this, no. I was here to collect a winter coat, I treat myself to something every year, never will I frequent House of bruer again, extreme reaction ? - No. I said to coffee guy I’ll speak to manager he replied “good luck then sir” I’m fuming.

I would give two stars for the food and one star for table etiquette. We were unimpressed when we sat down to a table setting of basic low-quality, stamped-out flatware with sharp edges. Three of us ordered meat (duck, pork and beef), the other fish. No alternative, appropriate knives were brought to suit the food, nor was the cutlery replaced after the starter. There were splotches of dried food debris on the underside of all the placemats, which apparently never gets wiped off when they are stacked. The food itself was okay, but portions were on the small side and overpriced for what it was, e.g. two slices of duck breast, 1" slice of sea bass, very little vegetable to accompany. The chicken liver parfait starter was good but came with only three small slices of toasted baguette and bread was £6 extra. There was an abundance of wait staff operating on high-speed settings. We had trouble understanding what kept so many staff on the run (literally) given the restaurant was not full and could have been disruptive were it a romantic dinner for two. We just watched the show. Overall, a four-star restaurant should pay more attention to detail, quality and cleanliness, if it wants to have a four-star reputation.

Last time I was here the fish and chips was really good. Afraid to say this time my wife had the fish and chips and it was cafe standard at best. I had the mac and cheese and I have to say this was the worst mac and cheese I have ever had in my life. Microwaved with what little sauce there was at the bottom of the bowl. The parmesan was probably fresh about a week ago and been sitting out since then. We won’t be bac. Pity as we are local. Staff (waiter, bar staff and receptionist) were pleasant enough though and can’t fault them at all.

We had an enjoyable lunch at the Bein Inn. My partner said his burger was good, his purple coleslaw looked appealing and I have to say his chips (something neither of us is fond of) were probably the best we've had. I ordered a chicken fajita, which was the most unusual I've ever had: *everything*, including the rice (either pilau or basmati, not long grain as I'd expect), wrapped up in one big dod with three sauces on the side. It tasted fine and was filling, but looked tragi-comical. The young waitress warned us they had no avocados, but on questioning thought they may have guacamole; however it was substituted with some kind of chutney, which was ok if unconventional. On the plus side, it all seemed to have actually been cooked rather than banged into a microwave, which we appreciated. The service was good and friendly, and our food arrived in a timely manner, noting that we arrived at the beginning of Friday lunchtime when it was quiet. We're not in a hurry to go back, as the menu was limited and a bit overpriced, at least for my weird offering at £17. There seemed to be some renovation work going on in the entrance area, all good, but didn't add to the ambience. We'd originally looked into this for a Sunday lunch, which seems popular with others, would possibly try it for that in future.
