This was a gem found by pure chance. Stayed a couple of nights ate both evening meals there. Huge portions and served very hot. As you’d expect but not always get. Good real Ale. Very busy so if fining probably best to book. Rooms very in keeping with period. No skimping on heating. WiFi good. Shower also good and very clean. If I’m looking to moan a designated soap and shampoo is expected. The only complaint is the mattress. To protect from springs slept on duvet. A memory foam protector would no doubt rectify this. We would definitely stay again. And as everything else so good giving full marks.

Discussed pint Guinness gone upto £5.90 a pint, said to staff, cost gone down and owner has put up Guinnes to a very high price, even the staff agreed really hike up price, they too thought it was pure greed. Will not use this pub again.

Being visiting the Dun Cow for many years and it never fails, I tend to have the goats cheese vegetable lasagne, it is delicious and full of flavour, the salad is always fresh with just enough drizzle for flavour and the chips oh my, best ever. My partner on that occasion had curry which was also excellent, it was a full chicken fillet in a curry sauce and my mam had seabass, she is an excellent cook herself so knows good food, always a great atmosphere and staff very helpful, we there again this week to celebrate our daughter getting her first job

Been going here last couple of years probably about once a month. Unfortunately service was very poor with food quality not as good as usual. The waitress managed to get the order’s wrong ( one of the starters and one of the main meals) I think she was new as I hadn’t seen here before. I received prawn cocktail instead of tempura prawns, this was changed without issue but my partner had finished hers by the time mine came ( which wasn’t a problem as I appreciate they needed to be cooked) The main meals came and again mine was wrong. I asked for chips instead of mash but it came with mash, I told the young man I requested chips and he did offer to change it but I said it would be ok. The vegetables were very bland which surprised me as normally they are tasty. Not sure what has changed here?

We booked an overnight after a day at the races. When we arrived we were welcomed by the Manager Richard. He could not have been more helpful. This place is a homely pub with a large separate restaurant. We checked into our room. It certainly is not the Ritz. But was clean ,comfortable and had everything you needed. We ventured into the bar where a quiz was just about to start. The place was packed. There are a great selection of beers and lagers and 24 gins. We ate in the bar it was top class.

My wife and I booked a table in the restaurant for Sunday lunch on the previous Tuesday, our only stipulation was the table to be as light as possible as my wife is registered blind and I have recently lost a good portion of my sight through a number of strokes. On arrival we were put in the bar area which is difficult to access because of steps and very poor lighting. The table server was informed that we had booked the restaurant but we were told we had been allocated the table in the bar because we had a dog. The dog in question is my wife’s guide dog. The drinks order was duly taken and menus just thrown on the table. It was clear we both had sight issues and no effort was made to provide large print menus or help in reading the menus. Soft drinks delivered still in bottle again no offer to pour them for us. The owner did come over and apologised and gave an excuse why we had not been placed in the restaurant and that in future he would make a concession and allow my wife’s dog in the restaurant clearly unaware of the Equality Act. The food was acceptable but the chips were found to be hard. There was no ice available for our drinks, so all in all a poor service provided and if your not in a wheelchair your not disabled

Having not been to the Dun Cow for many years, we thought we would give it a try as we were hosting family for the weekend. Having read some reviews, I was a bit nervous as to what it was going to be like. I needed not to have worried....what a fantastic evening we had. Very attentive and polite staff, who couldn't do enough. The decor is very traditional, and hasnt changed much in the last 30 years, but that just adds to its charm. Lit candles on all tables, and roses too. Some had lovely white table linen - not ours forcsome reason - but that was no problem. As for the food...all I can say is WOW! It is a long time since I have had such amazing food. Warm bread and butter was brought to the table while we chose our menus. Starter of smoked salmon, which was a very generous portion and was delicious. Main course was chicken breast with black pudding and peppercorn sauce. Quite simply one of the best meals I have ever had....was just disappointed I couldn't finish it! We were a group of 10, and every single main course was piping hot, and clearly freshly made. The owner was in the restaurant all evening checking everyone's meal was OK for them. I highly recommend giving the Dhn Cow a try. We will certainly be back in the near future.

What a great restaurant we came for a family reunion a group of 10 of us in total . Lovely welcome and we were all seated on a long table by a very friendly member of staff . The atmosphere in this restaurant is very warm and with lit candles and dark wood it was like going back in time. Most of us had starters and if I knew they were going to be so big I would have shared it but I ordered breaded Brie and enjoyed every bit . I then ordered the seabass which was cooked perfectly but certainly couldn’t eat a dessert but a few people in our group did and they looked amazing . I can’t praise this restaurant enough so Thankyou so much for doing such an amazing job your staff are a credit to you and a lovely man who we presume was the owner also went to every table to check everything was alright . What a great place and well done .

We decided to try the dun Cow again for Food after Previously being disappointed, because It is such a lovely Pub….. but once again very poor food. I had the Thai green curry with king Prawns which the minute it arrived I knew I wasn’t happy with it. In hindsight I should have sent it back however we had waited a while for food as it was quite busy (the sun was out) and we were hungry. There was no Curry sauce as such, mainly vegetables with rice. I nearly asked For More sauce however no one came and asked if our meal was ok, so by then I’d Sort of Picked around it. I have to say the king prawns saved the day but there was no Sign Of curry sauce. Very disappointed again and I really wanted to enjoy the food here as we eat out several times a week and are local. The staff couldn’t be More Helpful behind the bar however the waitress Didn’t seem interested when I told Her about My Food. I’m Sure my Comments would Not have been Passed on To the Chef. In hindsight I Shudnt have tried it and just send It back. I Knew from the off it wasn’t good.

The right amount of time between courses. Its was obvious that other diners had been before and its certainly a place we will return to. A very pleasurable experience.

It was a few years since we've visited this really nice Pub so when we return to the town we were always going to go there. In the main we had a great time but it was just so busy the service was patchy at times. We couldn't order for awhile and had to help ourselves to Condiments and go to the bar for our refills of drinks. Overall though we had a great time and the food was very good indeed. My steak pie had a puff pastry lid that was so light it seem to almost be able to float off! The prawn cocktail was absolutely excellent as well and the Maitre D top class. He really made our night actually as he looked after us very well and Rearranged our table and so on. They have a great range of drinks including some excellent beers and the atmosphere crackles as it is so popular. A few more waiting staff at busy times and this would definitely be a five star review.

Just spent Valentine with my wife in the Dun Cow Sedgefield. Decided to eat in bar. Quite shocked that they allowed Dogs in on that night, I sat there smelling wet dog all through the meal. Nice😭 Then it got worse when another dog came in and serving staff were patting the dog, then it was licking their hands etc, staff then just went back to bar picked up drinks and delivered to tables. I know the law says dogs are not allowed in food prep areas, however the staff didn’t wash hands then delivery food to tables in bar area. Make up your mind Dun Cow. Dogs are ok in a food area bar or not?? Put a notice on door, so people know rules before they enter pub. Impeccable Pig for me next time

I have only ever left 2 reviews on Tripadvisor in the past 10+ years, however, I feel so disappointed with the meal and customer service which my husband and I experienced this evening that I feel compelled to leave a review. I ordered a lasagne which was so incredibly salty! It got to a point that after each mouthful all I could taste was salt on my lips. I struggled to eat it and managed to eat just under half, I then had to leave the rest. When the table was cleared I asked the waitress if the chef had tasted the lasagne that was being served this evening, I explained that it was incredibly salty which is why I had to leave it. The waitress said she would let the Chef know. When we went to pay, we were charged for the lasagne, my husband asked if they had received the feedback about the lasagne and the barman just smiled and said 'yes'.... no apology or offer of trying to make it right. I am so disappointed and upset with the quality of the food, however, if my feedback/complaint had been dealt with in a professional manner we would visit the Dun Cow again but due to the poor customer service we will not be returning.

I first went to the Dunn cow about 35 years ago. It still has he same decor now. Staff miserable, dusty, grubby and very dated interior. Purples and fake tudor beams. Although the staff were still wearing covid masks, we were greeted by blank stares. clutter and junk all around the reception 'hatch'The main business is elderly people. Wanting good old fashioned 80's food, fish and chips , scampy and a big plate full. the staff walking around like zombies, im not sure who was in charge. Bedrooms, just the same . dated, fake beams and purple everywhere. Cheap thin mattresses. Car park out the back was a accident waiting to happen, cars just abandoned, blocking everyone else in. We stayed there as there was no where else available. I'm guessing its the same owners forever and have given up , waiting to retire, spend zero on it.The breakfast was brilliant - and a very helpful , friendly Scottish lady. Maybe management should study her social and people skills

Visited for the 1st time after recommendations. We were asked what drinks we wanted before we sat down, I asked if i could see the drinks menu first and this was brought over and waited 25 mins for staff to.come back and take the drink order.Drinks were then brought.over after 40 mins of waiting and ordered food waited 1hr 20 mins for food to be served to us. Food was nice but waiting so long for it put me off. The staff werent very friendly and didnt seem to be rushed. We were considering having dessert but werent asked if we wanted to see dessert menu so didnt bother given the amount of time it took to serve the drinks and meal. I wouldnt go back.

We visited as a group of four adults and two kids for an early evening weekend dinner. The service was brilliant, and special care taken of the kids which is always nice when dining out as a family. I had the rump steak in garlic and it was really tasty. My other half had the fillet steak, which again was really tasty and cooked exactly how he asked. The other two adults had the king prawn and monkfish madras ("really tasty and not too hot") and the scampi ("really good"). The kids were offered a selection of smaller meals off the main menu (e.g. lasagne) but went for an adult-sized burger, which they shared and thoroughly enjoyed. The place has a lovely "country pub" feel and the menu is reasonably priced for large portions of good food. We will definitely be going back!

Called in for food at 16.30. Was very quiet. We were seated an ordered drinks and food. The food came with sides of chips. I asked for vinegar. There was salt on the table but no vinegar and I cannot eat chips without it! The vinegar never materialised. It’s table service only and not a single member of staff came to ask if everything was ok or whether we wanted another drink. When we paid and I gave some feedback I got a “sorry, I’ll feed it back”. Considering they were very quiet, the service was just not good enough.

The Dun Cow is a favourite of ours but I have to say the Sunday Lunch today was very disappointing. No potatoes only 3 small quality roasties, meat was wafer thin and tasteless and veg came all mixed up in cabbage. £13.75 for the main course and we left hungry!

I have always recommended the Dun Cow to all my friends for Sunday lunch as it was always lovely. Unfortunately today was a different story. On arrival we were not down for reservation. I had booked for 1pm earlier in the week but rang and postponed it to 2.30. They had crossed out my early booking and not put new time down. The majority of us had potato skins for starters, a lot of variation in portion sizes. The salad was limp and soggy. Mains arrived and meat portions were very much less than previous visits. My lamb was rather tough and not much of it. Roast potatoes another disappointment. Ordering drinks was hit and miss. Round came and one drink missing. Ordered two desserts that did not arrive Until we asked for them again. Give staff their due they apologised and did not charge for them. This was a treat for my family and not the delicious meal we had come to expect from this establishment Expensive food and drinks too

Brilliant food, the staff were helpful. Unlike other places we have visited in the last few days the staff were wearing facemasks and taking the safety of their customers seriously. Recommend the sweets, lovely!

Remember writing very similar review six months ago. Same menu, very mundane,no chicken wings, ribs, mussels, just same old things. Cold food, hot salad (servedon a warm plate still, despite complaining for years) Starters were ridiculous forprice charged and scallops very badly cooked, greasy and awful. First time out forfive months and a huge mistake. Not an enjoyable experience.

You will not find a better Sunday lunch anywhere than the Dun Cow but our experience tonight was a shambles. Seated in an area not big enough for the 4 of us. 3 of the 4 drinks ordered wrong. Portion size poor. Steak tasteless and tough. 10 minute wait for condiments. Peppercorn sauce arrived after we had finished (left most of the steak) eating. 20 minute wait for the bill. Very dissapointed in what is normally a great experience.

Lovely to see the Dun Cow reopen again and lots of Covid19 hygiene precautions in place, starting with a Please wait to be seated sign and staff then taking you in a one way system to your table.Various hand sanitizer stations throughout the pub too.The food was plentiful and good as always, I was perhaps expecting a reduced menu but no, as much choice as always, including specials at very decent prices as always.Service was friendly, perhaps a bit slower than normal but we were not in a rush so it didn't bother us.We took advantage of the Eat Out To Help Out offer and it was nice seeing the pub so busy again, hoping this will help to keep places like the Dun Cow going for many years. My only concern was that too many people still wandered up to the bar to order drinks so perhaps staff will just have to a bit firmer and send them back to their tables. I understand this might not be in their friendly nature but we allneed to adhere to the rules to keep everyone safe

Our first experience in a pub / restaurant post lockdown. Delighted with our whole experience- from booking our table - to the warm welcome from Geoff, Richard and the rest of the staff - we were reassured by the organisation and adherence to Covid 19 guidance - right through to seeing the full range of tempting dishes on offer (as always). The place has been beautifully decorated and carpeted - felt clean and fresh. Most importantly, the food was excellent. Highly recommended!

Been here quite a few times when in the area for work. Booked a table for me , a teenager and a friend. Place was busy as expected. Reservation not found but we were still given a table. Pleasant receptionist and waitering staff. Orders for drinks and food taken without delay. Nobody came back to ask if we wanted a top up, and we had to stop staff for the bill and ended up going to the bar to pay. Minor complaints really.Saying that, the roast beef (med rare sirloin) was the best I've had as I don't usually like roast beef. We all had it. Tender and succulent. Potatoes a bit firm and odd-tasting but a good variety of other veg and plenty of gravy. Brownie tasted lovely but was too crumbly and cake like to be a brownie. The fudge cake with custard was very sweet but otherwise fine. Enjoyed the atmosphere and lunch overall and will go back.

I came here following a disappointing visit elsewhere as I felt sure it wouldn't disappoint, and it didn't. The bar was busy, always a good sign, so I sat in the room to the rear and poured over the lunchtime menus with a pint of Holygrail in hand. The menus consisted of a lightbites option, a second more substantial menu and the specials blackboard. I decided to have a lightbite as a starter and something off the blackboard for main. Both couses were beautiful and arrived hot and well presented. I particularly enjoyed my main of grilled salmon served with brown shrimp and prawns in a garlic butter. It was served with perfectly cooked vegetables, just as they should be with a bit of bite. I saved my fresh bread rolls and butter from my battered calamari starter and had these on the side also. A great selection of ales are also on offer and I can't fault the place one bit. A special mention too for the staff who were on the ball and were attentive and polite without being overly fussy or intrusive as you tend to find all too often.

Whilst staying at the overpriced Impeccable Pig, we went to the Dunn Cow for a meal which was much better than at the hotel. Good tasty food well priced and nice atmosphere. You can eat in the bar or restaurant, we were greeted at the door by the owner who came and checked all was well during our meal. Really good quality pub grub with lots of choice, would definitely go there again.

As long-term users, appreciate the choice and quality of food, and proper chips. However, the last visit was spoilt by the change in type of chips on offer - tasted like cheap, oven-cooked variety.

I normally love going to the Tea Barn and go regularly. I buy all my plants from here as well as going into the restaurant. Today, the lady serving on the counter spoke to me like I was a piece of dirt under her shoe - she was rude, brusque and condescending and gave the impression that she couldn't be bothered being there. What a shame. It will be a while before I consider going back now.
