The food is good, the quantities are small, the price is slightly exaggerated, there are better restaurants in the city and lower prices

We booked a table for five and we were delighted (and lucky) to get a private alcove. The service was friendly and relatively swift. The food was amazing. Not too spicy, more aromatic with ‘layers’ of flavour. I’d recommend the Hiderabadi Haleem and the lamb shank. The okra raita is perfection. The chicken 65 was delicious as was the mutton fry. With beers and two bottles of wine our bill was a shade over £200. Money well spent in this quirky restaurant.

I came here with my brother as it was his first time at dum Briyani. He ordered the chicken Briyani and I ordered the lamb shank Briyani. Unfortunately we couldn’t enjoy our food as there was a baby crying for 30 Minutes non stop. We left half way without finishing our food! Which is such a shame as I wanted to make a good impression of the hidden gem. The food was well done however it’s a shame we never finished it! Due to the noise By the baby’s loud screams. I sincerely hope this is resolved as it ruined our experience altogether we also feel our time, money was wasted.

Unremarkable experience after the hype and excitement that preceded. Chicken 65 - ordered three serves - two were soggy as ! Told the kitchen - didn't make a difference. Mutton fry - dude! the masala has got to soak in ...give it a slow cook ! Pomfret 'fry' - again...soggy ! Told the kitchen. Didn't make a difference. Lamb shank biriyani - quite good though very dry. Chicken Biriyani - c'mom mate ! That was sous vide chicken tossed lightly in a sauce and cooked with the rice ! The meat was bland as ! Our bill £423.56 ! Yes, we were 9 in all. Left very disappointed. For your reference Dum London- T10, 14904.

Whilst I can't claim to be biryani expert, I've still had it plenty of times in the UK and in India, so I know the good from the bad. First off, this isn't Hyderabadi biryani, which is a shame as that is, in my opinion, the king of biryanis. Instead you get something which is ferociously spicy and pretty much devoid of the complexity and taste of a good biryani. The sole taste in this heat from black pepper and chili. The biryani comes in pretty huge pots with the pastry seal from the oven intact. You can eat this, but it doesn't taste of much and it's something I've never seen presented to the customer in India before. The sheer quality of food is kind impressive perhaps, but unless you have a serious appetite then you may struggle to finish it. The restaurant itself is I hope going for a short of characterful back street Indian feel, either that or it's just run down and needs a painting. The staff were generally fine and prices aren't offensive. Overall I found the food here to be mediocre at best. It's just lots spice and frankly that gets tiring after a while. There's no taste here, which is the last thing a biryani should suffer from.

Scruffy, bit of dungeon for lunch, man on front desk a little grumpy, but the biryani best I've had in London. Well priced and really tasty.

Located close to Oxford Street, this restaurant offers a great range of biryanis which although pricey, are definitely worth a try. They come in either lamb, chicken or vegetable. They come with a variety of sauces (the lime and pickle was my favourite). But the best thing about them was that they came with an almost puff pastry like top that can easily be broken apart with a spoon. As for the biryani, it was deliciously spiced and the lamb shank was so tender and fall apart. And if you're not a fan of biryanis, there's a wide range of curries and other dishes to satisfy your tastebuds. The restaurant boasts southern Indian vibes with a modern touch though my only complaint is that they didn't blast rap music throughout the restaurant.

We had shopped, walked, shopped and walked all day and DUM Biryani was where we decided to have dinner. On a side street off Oxford Street, an unassuming entrance leads down stairs to deliciousness. It is definitely worth seeking out. The place was buzzing when we arrived and we were fortunate to snag a table for two. I would suggest reservations, as there was quite a line when we were leaving. Along with a beer (Cobra?), we ordered one of the drink specials - can't remember the name, but it was essentially a spicy Negroni - and it was very good! We then ordered the Wild Mushroom Potli and Andhra Prawn Fry as appetizers which came out rapid fire fast. The Prawns were delicious, but we were rushed to enjoy the Mushrooms as our main dish arrived before we could savour the little bundles. So, there in lies my suggestion, and the reason for knocking off a point.... slow down food service and let people enjoy the food. It's good. Really good. But don't rush people with all the food overlapping and not giving time to enjoy. The 2 guys beside us had the right idea,,, they ordered a few things, then didn't order more until they were done, and then ordered more again. We decided to share the Lamb Shank Birhyani. Thank god, as the portion is huge! How do people eat one all to themselves? We layered on the accompanying okra raita, mirchi salan and house acharr which resulted in mouthfuls of absolute deliciousness. Along side, we could not resist the Dal and some Paratha. Service was spot on, with a strong team collaboration. Fun artwork. Nice washrooms. Would definitely return.

I visited mid week with two friends. We ordered the speciality dishes: - Chicken biryani - seafood biryani - lamb biryani The food came very quickly and was steaming hot! The portions did not look that big at first, but we all struggled to finish our food. All the dishes were delicious. The prices are very affordable with lamb biryani being the most expensive at £21. The restaurant itself is very casual with some funny artwork.

The restaurant is cosy and has a nice atmosphere. However we were so excited for this Biryani for a birthday and it was disappointing. We're good with spicy food but the chicken and vegetable biryanis just seemed to be so spicy and salty you couldn't really taste anything else. The starters were good.

The place is quirky with posters and paintings on the wall. The presentation of the food is spot on but the quality of their main dish is where this place falls over completely. Both the lamb shank and especially the chicken biryani were extremely spicy and lacked tasteful flavour. The quality of the rice was not great either. The place is overpriced for the quality of the food. Since we couldn’t finish the food the manager asked if we would like it packed - we said yes and instead of taking the dish and packing it we were given an empty plastic container to pack it ourselves on the table which is extremely poor service.

We visited the Gunpowder Restaurant on Greek Street in Soho as part of their India Club monthly dining experience. The 6 course menu showcased Hyderabad cuisine. The Kid Goat Keema Lukhmi was excellent along with the Chicken 65, and the Kakori Mutton Seekh and the Sofiyani Dum Biryani with grilled Mirchi ka Salan. Excellent food and excellent value.

I had an incredible dining experience at Royal India in Covent Garden. From the moment I stepped in, I was greeted with warm hospitality and a beautifully authentic atmosphere that set the tone for a memorable meal. The staff was attentive and friendly, making excellent recommendations tailored to our tastes. The food was truly exceptional—each dish was rich, flavorful, and expertly spiced, capturing the true essence of Indian cuisine. The butter chicken was silky and packed with flavor, while the biryani was aromatic and perfectly balanced. Whether you’re a fan of Indian cuisine or just looking to try something new, Royal India is a must-visit. This is easily one of the best Indian restaurants I’ve been to in London, and I can’t wait to return!

Average given the price. Nothing particularly bad, but given the price the food quality was about average and nothing really stood out as wow, as you would hope for somewhere charging £50/head. On the face of it the decor looks ornate and impressive, but actually when you looked closer the wood panelling looked tired, and in places may have had black mould on the edges of the mouldings. The atmosphere was also somehow cold and lacking warmth and class — it is possible this was due to a poor choice of lighting, mostly overhead and cold in temperature, and not enough side lighting and of a warmer colour temperature. It was also actually cold! It is not clear why the air conditioning would be on and set to such a low temperature in October. It was too cold for my 74 year old mother, but eventually they did provide a small space heater, which greatly improved things. The staff were friendly and helpful — i.e. with the space heater —and the manager honoured the price I was quoted online, which disagreed with the price in the menu in the restaurant.
