Went for a special meal for my wife and I and as expected a perfect experience. Food, ambience and service as you would expect from somewhere like this. Alright it’s expensive but you get what you pay for and here the food is amazing and therefore you don’t mind paying for quality. Highly recommended for a special meal in a special city. Thank you Edinburgh.

As a lover of seafood we were very much looking forward to this first visit. The service was efficient and good but with little personality. The taster menu was all cooked superbly but had no real highlights of a wow factor. The wines were also very good but not exceptional and delivered already in the glass with no real sommelier delivery. So this restaraunt is very good but missed the mark for us as it did not make us long to come back.

We had an Itison voucher for cocktails for two. We went on a Friday night, the bar wasn’t busy at all. We were two of four people there. They had a set menu but it also said ‘classics on request’. We asked for a mojito which the bartender couldn’t do. We then asked for a tequila sunrise which the bartender said he couldn’t do because they “had no cranberry juice” (it’s made with grenadine ?!). Settled in a negroni and a margarita. Both of which didn’t taste right. My negroni tasted sweet and syrup like, the margarita had no salt round the rim and was just generally disappointing. Bar had no atmosphere whatsoever and staff were generally quite aloof and unfriendly. Won’t be rushing back.

Visited with my husband after receiving the tasting menu itison voucher for Christmas. We were greeted and taken to a lovely seat next to the window. The restaurant feels light and airy which is perfect when it’s still light outside. All of the courses were delicious, although the crowdie dessert wasn’t quite to my taste. We also ordered oysters and bread, the bread was incredible - sour dough that was steaming on arrival and served with black garlic butter. The service was excellent throughout our meal. Great way to try different dishes that have been expertly prepared, particularly if you don’t usually opt for fish when eating out. We would definitely return and have recommended the tasting menu to others.

Went for lunch and had the 5 course tasting menu with paired wines. I enjoyed the food although nothing was really very memorable. I feel the need to highlight the paired wine and the price you currently charge in comparison to the experience we received . Our waitress was lovely and explained the food well. When it came to the wines, she had clearly been asked to read the bottle label and had no further knowledge. Several times she did not know which country the wine was from and even commented that white wines are all the same really. She also mentioned how hungover she was and smelling the wine made her feel worse. We chuckled but still, not really what I think this restaurant should be going for if it wants customers to return. Whilst she had her charms, I really think that for £49pp I would expect more from a restaurant with Dean Banks name attached. I would normally have asked to be compensated for our experience but given that we were the only diners on a Saturday afternoon, I really did not want to bring the atmosphere down further. I hope that this review results in improvements made for future diners. Had cocktails in the bar after and these were lovely. The bar staff were very friendly and knowledgeable.

I came with my girlfriend for our 4th visit to dulse, for the first time trying the tasting menu. We had an excellent experience, personally my first ever time try a tasting menu and it was Devine. Headed by executive chef Dean Banks’ amazing seafood creativity and delivered by wonderful staff with deep knowledge of cuisine. Our server Rebecca was subtle and attentive and topped our experience off in a classy fashion. We will be back of course

This was my second visit to Dulse. We were very impressed by most aspects, but not all. A very young front of house man has not been taught to smile, meet and greet, so first impressions are poor. Fortunately, he was compensated for by a lovely Polish lady and a very professional Irish one. We started with a dozen oysters, which were perfectly good, but not well shucked. A couple of mine were still attached. We decided to share three starters, two of which were sublime. The third was perfectly good, but overpowered the subtlety of the other two. The Orkney scallop, with a creamy morel mushroom sauce, was exquisite, as was the trout pastrami, which I have never tasted before. The Arbroath smokie spring roll was very tasty, just too powerful to accompany the other two. We then shared a cheese platter, which was pretty good, although I was surprised to see an Irish cheese on it. I think Dulse should have the best of Scottish cheeses. We had a good Languedoc Viognier. We had a couple of glasses of Primitivo from Puglia with the cheese, which I had to send back because the wine was pretty dead, after being left in an opened bottle for some time. Overall, this is a potentially outstanding restaurant, which just needs to tighten up on a few details and some training.

Dean Banks may be a good chef, and produce inventive seafood dishes, but the food is not the only thing that makes a great dining experience. He needs to invest in training a decent front of house team, because at the moment the service really lets this place down. I have been 3 times now, and each time the staff have been different, and the service very variable. Our last visit was on Saturday, with a couple who had not been there before. Fair to say they will not be coming back, and neither will we. Our table was booked for 8, and we arrived at 7:15 for pre-dinner drinks in the bar (These had been pre-booked). The barman was great, and produced some excellent cocktails. By 8:15, we had not been approached by any serving staff to direct us to our table, so we asked the barman. He took us to our table immediately, where we were given menus. There then appeared to be a rush to take orders (Not sure why no-one had given us menus in the bar). By 9:45 we had just finished our mains and I ordered a desert. It came very quickly, and I had just finished it when we were asked if we wanted anything else. We ordered another glass of wine each, and were just enjoying those, when another member of staff approached us and advised that the bar was closing, if we wanted anything else (It was around 10:10). As we still had wine, we declined, so the member of staff said they would bring our bill, which seemed a bit abrupt. We were then given the bill and asked if we wanted the card machine. We said that we had not finished our drinks. A short while later we were being watched by several members of staff and so we decided to settle the bill (which included a 12.5% service charge) We then got our coats and left at 10:25. We were followed out of the door by one of the staff who had grabbed her coat and bag, and was also leaving. Obviously they were in a hurry to close up, but it was only 10:25. This whole experience was not very pleasant, and seemed very rude to force diners to drink up and be gone. This is not fast food, at over £100 per person, but it did not feel like fine dining.

Astonishing. We’ll be talking about that meal for years. Seriously. Knock your socks off brilliant, from start to finish. Wonderful service, stunning wine list, and if you could bottle that Thai mussel broth and sell it, we’d have bought the lot. Every dish was exquisite. Generous portions ideal for sharing - and for managing to taste as many delicious things as possible. From the first olive to the last bit of scorched trout - breathtakingly good. Thank you for looking after us.

I have to say I had mixed feelings when we had to go ahead with this restaurant for a business dinner as we couldn't get a table elsewhere at last minute on that day - and that despite it being a Michelin starred restaurant from a former U.K. masterchef winner. I expected their dishes to taste bland and come in mini portions. Once I reached this place, I ordered a peach flavoured cocktail at the bar which tasted out of this world. I’m not a big drinker and one was enough to get me tipsy as it was quite strong. Once we were ready to go upstairs, we were taken to the dining room. The atmosphere in the dining room was a little cold but we had some interesting people dining next to us so that has made it a little lively. We had ordered a few dishes to share with some delicious wine. I'm not a big fan of Tuna but I loved how unique the Tuna dish was and beautifully spiced, paired with some rice crisps. The goan mussle curry was also something different and very flavourful and so was the fish curry. The scallops and Octopus were also divine. The bread and butter were also delicious. The only thing that we didn't like was that they have removed the plate with the scallops once we have eaten the scallops. We wanted to have the delicious sauce to eat with the remaining bread. Other than that, we were well looked after and it was a great experience and totally worth it. We left very happy and with our tummies full. I'd go back for sure.

Food was great. Oysters needed more than just lemon with them but were OK. Fish was very good, but small(ish). Service was a bit disorganised and he got a few things wrong but was a pleasant young fellow. Toilets need updating. The cutlery, glasses and plates were spotless but the loo’s were tired and unclean. The kitchen door was open and bins could be seen by the door. The devil is in the detail, I am surprised a Masterchief quarter finalist does not know that. Can not fault the food though. Best bread we have eaten in Edinburgh and we have been to all the top restaurants. Brussel sprouts were also outstanding and the best both I, and my wife, have eaten.

Great service and a nice ambience. High points but one or two low points with the food. Had the octopus, Arbroath smokie tart and the trout pastrami to start. The octopus was amazing - soft, charred and delicious. The tart too, crisp, smokey with a lovely creamy topping. The trout was fine, but a bit overpowered by the pastrami spices - it was perfectly cured though. The truffled cod was outstanding. But the lobster was a huge misfire. I think it was meant to be smoked but it tasted of ash, it was unpleasant verging on accrid. My partner enjoyed the chocolate pavé, which wasn't too sweet - really nicely balanced. Will go back, but will avoid the lobster dish for sure.

We entered Dulse and found ourselves in a tidy bar with high ceilings, a wooden floor and plenty of space. The barstaff were friendly and welcoming. That was the high point. We ordered a Fino (dry, white sherry) while waiting for our friends. We were served a Pedro Jimenez. Much like ordering a white wine and being given a glass of port. The menu provided ample confusion as to what was a starter, what was a main, what should be shared. It was Tapas that was not tapas. But, when my starter arrived, £18 for one and a half scallops, my heart sank even further. It was not as if it was even that tasty, pretty average if anything. The lobster was worse still, already deshelled and arranged in the body cavity, less meat than you’d find in a tin of sardines. We ordered a whole lobster between us, but were given only one plate. We asked for another, and without any sense of irony were handed a small side plate. Summed up the service, one side dish never arrived nor did the bread we asked for to fill the yawning gaps in our stomachs. If you have the appetite of a sparrow and pockets of infinite depth, this might the place for you. We certainly will never be back.

This place was pretty lazy and overall just bad. The menu and space have so much potential but mostly fell short in every way. Lazy service staff (although there was one gentleman working who was definitely picking up the pieces for the rest of his team. He was bald and we think probably English?) But really poor experience from start to finish. There was zero guidance through any of the menu and we waited an incredibly long time between courses. While the menu reads well, only one of the 5 things we ordered had any interesting qualities whatsoever and mostly all lacked seasoning. The proteins were cooked well which tells me the cooks knew what they were doing, but it also tells me the chef is either lazy or incompetent. I could go on but I wouldn’t waste my time coming here again. I hope they can figure it out, but I wouldn’t hold my breathe.

Came here for my 30th birthday. Sounds expectant but as there had been a section on the website when we booked asking if we were celebrating anything special, i thought they might have just said a quick happy birthday, but there was not really any greeting. The oysters were really nice, and the trout pastrami was good. Everything else was fine, but not mind blowing, unfortunately, and we were expecting super delicious given the reviews. The octopus was a little tough and my hake was bland even though it was marinated in tandoori. All this would have been communicated if the staff had came over at any point during the meal to check how it was but this never happened. This lead us to feel a bit lacklustre about ordering a dessert, which was solidified when a waiter came to ask what desserts we were ordering when the other person wasn't at the table to be able to answer. It felt like we were being hurried out although it wasn't full in the restaurant. Overall, it was only OK

Had to delete a previous 5 star review to sadly put a new review up. Been here many times and saw an itison deal for cocktails which clearly linked to the menu on the website which has quite quirky and unusual sounding cocktails. When we arrived we were handed a 2 for 1 itison menu with very standard cocktails (daiquiri, kir royale with Prosecco, etc) which is totally not what was advertised. Opted out of using our vouchers and spent £75 on food and a drink but also highlighted this to the serving staff who did not seem to care. Came home and requested a refund from itison who refused as Dulse had marked the vouchers as used! Took a number of weeks of lengthy complaints to just get my money back and still waiting a decent response to the complaint I issued directly to the place. Sadly this experience means we will no longer be visiting Dean Banks places or buying the gin which is a regular in our house. Very disappointed. They could have at least saved the relationship by handling the complaint better.

A lot of reviews that have complained about the service/experience have given 1 star, however that is not a true reflection on the food it’s self, however when you spend this kind of money, you expect the service to be high end, and if… god forbid…something goes wrong with the food, and it’s their fault, they should bend over backwards for you and use professional discretion to makes thing right. We found the complete opposite! and very little was done to rectify the huge mistakes on our order, nor any attempt to make it right, and they did get quite defensively. For this reason I don’t Recomend Dulse. If you want to got for a special occasion, I personally wouldn’t do so for the reasons mentioned above.

My wife booked this as a treat whilst we were in Edinburgh as she really wanted to visit a seafood restaurant. We arrived early and shown to our table on what turned out to be a very busy Tuesday evening. The menu was exciting, although...

Great new Edinburgh restaurant with a lovely wine bar. All food was amazing but the arbroath smokie tart was just brilliant. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. I would highly recommend and I will definitely be back.

We absolutely loved the oysters! Stopped in here on the off chance the day before we left and very glad we did. Casual yet competent staff took care of us on our last day in Edinburgh. I had the Baked North sea Cod with Goan...

Wonderful fish and seafood restaurant- plates served on a sharing basis. Great friendly service. Meals served in small upstairs restaurant which was slightly lacking in atmosphere … no complaints about the quality, freshness and presentation of the food though.

Really enjoyed this sweet little restaurant, food was excellent & service polite & friendly. They specialise in fish & all dishes were expertly cooked & flavoured. The upstairs room is the nicer place to be in my opinion. It's a fine dining experience, but the...

Superb food with absolute attention to quality and perfection in cooking. We had ALL the starters, Halibut and Hake. Great food and an amazing chef wouldn't be sufficient.. They got the staff, an amazing winning team who greeted us with smiles, brought the food dish by dish with true dedication. We came here by coincidence, just tourists walking the streets looking for a restaurant to eat.. We didn't expect a Michelin level restaurant.. Dulse delivers on every single level.

The food is the hero in this superb seafood restaurant. The menu emphasises sharing plates . . . both smaller taster dishes, and more substantial options. All fresh ingredients, skilfully creating innovative blends of textures, colours and flavours, and all tantalisingly tasty. Exotic list of...

The price does not correspond with the quality and expected elegance of the meals, nor the training of the staff. My family and I experienced several mishaps that we expected a restaurant like Dulse would rise above: starters did not arrive together, drinks did not...

Ordered a couple a starters and a whole halibut. There was bit of a wait for the fish which was understandable but needless to say when it arrived it was huge. We could only eat half and asked for the rest to take home. We were told no based on health and safety legislation - which is not the case, it’s at the restaurants discretion. I find that level of food waste disgusting/ and also if I am handing over £250 for a meal for 2 I would expect them to give us the food we paid for. The piece of fish was big - my partner and I would only eat half - so a massive bit of expensive, unsustainable food binned! Gave our waitress a tip as it was not her fault and paid the service (12.5) so we were fair but will not be back - and won’t recommend. There is an element of fine dining with the food and some of the staff have worked in fancy restaurants but I would say it fits in the mid range / trying to be high range. Shame the evening ended as it did

It was quiet when we called with our cocktail vouchers. Had our drinks then headed for a booked meal elsewhere. Barman Benjamin seems to know his stuff. Chatty and attentive. Coctails were very good. The other half wants to go back soon and eat [and drink] there.
