We went for afternoon tea after our time at the spa. What a wonderful experience it was. The customer service we received from Cristian was second to none. He was polite and courteous, and nothing was too much trouble. It is, sadly, unusual to receive this level of customer service nowadays and I cannot praise him enough. The sandwich selection was traditionally but tasty, scone’s where fresh and the cake selection was delicious. Thank you, would definitely recommend.

The a la carte menu was stripped to the bare minimum for which they are blaming the Corona Virus. Even the chips appear to be frozen, the belly pork was very mixed with some peices being like shoe leather. The over-set panacotta was accompanied by just 2 rasberries. Despite a list of around 7 flavours of icecream on the menu they only had 3 and they were not the same as the flavours listed. Icecream was just a cardboard tub on a plate. Apple pie, no this is out of stock. To top things off, the current discounts were suspended for the government scheme despite the scheme stating that it runs in parallel with other discounts. After this was pointed out they then applied the discount incorrectly so we are still £4 out of pocket. The restaurant must be well overdue a re-furb but before then the food needs sorting out.

A lovely place for a light lunch and more. We had the sharing boards of cheese, ham and pate, accompanied by chutney and lots of crusty bread and sourdough chips - tasty! My children were able to choose their own board with milder cheeses and ham so they were very happy. Waiter was very pleasant and was definitely spreading the Christmas spirit.

We have just had a meal in this restaurant for my 30th birthday. Jamie W was our server and I cannot rate him highly enough. He is well mannered, polite and efficient, respectful and attentive. He made us feel at ease and as though we were his only table whilst also giving the same service to every other table he was serving. He deserves to be recognised for this and told what an asset he is to your business. He's made our visit thoroughly enjoyable and I can't praise him enough. Thank you Jamie W, what a lovely young man!

This was our third visit for afternoon tea and every visit there is a new format. Our first visit had a range of familiar (black) teas including the old favourites such as Assam, Darjeeling and Lapsang Souchong. The range of teas on the menu now are Novus Brand with a wider range of fruit teas thrown into the list. Whilst I miss the Lapsang Souchong, the Persian Pomegranate was surprisingly delicious (I don't even like pomegranate normally). They also have the novelty of a set of sand timers placed on top of the teapot so that you can time your perfect brew and remove the leaves when you hit your preferred strength of brew. The food menu has also changed and there is a new more substantial pie based offering available alongside the traditional sandwich and fancies. A selection of scones completes the range of food on offer. The pleasant and helpful staff complete a very pleasant, relaxing and fulfilling experience. It is not quite perfect but the constant changes mean that you don't really know what to expect so, therefore, it will never meet expectations.

We went for a festive afternoon tea. The service was good but slow. The waitress staff were attentive and helpful - the food was good, although the portion of cream served with the scone was rock hard - clearly just come out of the freezer. Between the two of us we had ten finger sandwiches, two scones with jam and cream and eight little cakes, so 10 items each. We elected to have coffee, which was a little bland. Free top ups though. Overall, this was reasonable value for the price. Because of a delay in service we were offered a free glass of Prosecco by way of compensation. I hadn't complained so this was a nice touch. The restaurant only had one oher couple so bookings were clearly sparse on that day, so this made it difficult in terms of establishing an atmospere. Decor is very dark wood panelling - the traditional old-fashioned look is fine for us, because we are old gits, but to appeal to the majority of guests, a bit of a refresh is overdue - much more light needed in this room. Likewise, furniture and carpeting a little tired. On a positive note, the venue overall was nice and we will revisit in the sumer months to make the most of the attractive grounds. With no options between Average and Very Good on the ratings scale, I have opted for Average, due prmarily to some issues with the unnecessarily protracted booking process.

Went for afternoon tea on a Saturday afternoon and there was only one other table taken. The tables were set up for breakfast the following morning apparently so didn’t have everything we needed. The tablecloths needed a good iron and the room was dark and had no atmosphere. We have been before and it was a totally different experience. The waitress brought our tea and coffee but there was no milk or sugar and it was another ten minutes or so before we managed to catch anyone to let them know. When they brought our food we had to ask for plates! The sandwiches were a bit dry as if they’d been standing a while and one of the fillings was beef and coleslaw which didn’t go together at all. The scones were all sweet, normally you would get a savoury one as well. The desserts were ok apart from the strawberry cheesecake which tasted really bad. Just after our food was brought out the waitress said she her shift was over but someone else would look after us. Never saw anyone until we went to look for someone to pay the bill. This kind of service is not what you would expect from a hotel of this standard. Needless to say we won’t return for afternoon tea.

Stayed at the hotel for 2 nights as a spa break and had breakfast both mornings plus dinner at Dukes Grill on the 2nd evening. We were insulted on at least two occasions at dinner with the waiter asking my wife if she was a waitress in a sarcastic manner. This was in response to her asking for a new glass after two glasses having lipstick on from the previous guests then the third he put his fingers right into. On the last morning we paid extra for three eggs benedict and all three came with freezing cold eggs and bacon.

Booked a Spa Day with afternoon tea for my wife and 2 (grown up) daughters. Spa was excellent and cannot fault the staff or service in that department however we had a 45 minute wait after being seated in the "Dukes Grill" for the Afternoon Tea to arrive (all the while in bath robes!) Eventually went to chase the victuals expecting to see the restaurant next door to be rammed but found it empty - so they weren't too busy (expecting that to be the reason for the delay). When the food eventually did arrive, we were only served 3 out of 4 meals (Adding insult to injury!). My eldest had to bolt her food as her Spa Treatments were booked for after our teas and we had little time to enjoy it (when it eventually arrived). Apparently the chefs were using a new menu for afternoon tea and were experiencing "hiccups" - I guess we were the trail runs? Not what you expect when you're paying top dollar.

Interesting food choices and excellent wines were partaken. We had scallops and venison as recommended by the restaurant manger and both were fine choices. Service was busy but we were never felt it was slow and a sorbet was served when the restaurant was at it's busiest which shows thought for the diner between courses. The only negative would be that more vegetables could have been served wth the mains. For a hotel restaurant it was definitely worth eating in.

A treat of afternoon tea while at Slaley Hall Hotel was wonderful experience. We were made to feel welcome and offered the choice of tables available. Nihan was the waitress looking after us and gave us time to chose from the extensive list of afternoon teas. We chose the Traditional with a good choice of sandwiches which were explained (as I dont eat mustard with ham), two scones with generous helping of jam and cream, and to finish a good selection of cakes and a trifle. Nihan attended to us with just the right level of engagement with customers and offered to take our photograph once she saw us with our camera. Id give this afternoon tea 10/10

We live very locally but had never been to Dukes and so decided to go as an early valentines - the service was poor and the food was worse. The main was the most disappointing by far my steak which was allegedly rare was not in the slightest bit rare not even pink but horribly over cooked and very fatty, it was such a thin bit of very fatty meat it was probably impossible to have it rare though. We didn't hang around for desert even though it was included in the price as after spending around 15 mins waiting for our dirty dishes to be cleared from the main and another 15 mins with the desert menu before anyone showed any interest in taking an order I had lost all interest. We then tried to pay and leave, the card machine failed 3 times apparently it was faulty and kept cancelling the transaction????!!!!! we then had to wait 25 minutes as they had lost my coat they asked us to wait in the bar but didn't offer a complimentary drink and at one point even asking me 'was I sure I actually even brought a coat?' All in all not what I expected on any level and will not be returning

We stayed at Slaley Hall for 4 nights and our first evening meal was taken in Duke's Grill. There were 6 of us eating and there were a few starters but scallops and pork belly were most popular. Very good and well presented. There was beef Wellington on the memu but for some reason you could only order if there were 2 having this. My husband and I decided we would like to try this assuming you had to share but they came as separate dishes so it was strange that you couldn't order this singularly! It was good although the pastry was quite wet on the bottom and we didn't get to choose how we wanted the steak cooked, but it was quite nice tasting. The only issue with staying in the hotel is the same menu almost is also served in the only other restaurant Hadrians Brasserie and no daily specials so you soon get bored eating in the restaurant.Staff were friendly but then the waiter at the end of the meal chose to tell us that if we put the tip on the bill he wouldn't get it so we felt obliged to give a cash tip to him! Made us feel quite uncomfortable. It's nice as a one off meal for a treat or a celebration or romantic meal but it's not somewhere you would return to more than a couple of visits due to the lack of food choices

We arrived at Slaley hall, Dukes grill for afternoon tea full of great anticipation. We were not disappointed. It truly was a treat!!We had been given a voucher for afternoon tea as a very generous gift from an extremely kind friend. My parents picked today to come as a treat for me as I am enduring the trauma of revising for GCSEs! We were so impressed by our very attentive and jovial, without being at all intrusive, waiter Souza, we felt he was a very valuable member of Andrew's team of staff. It is not our practice to ask names when we go out to eat, but we were so impressed with the whole experience, such a delightful atmosphere, truly indulgence food and range of exotic and unusual teas. We have been inspired to put pen to paper and write a rave review. We highly recommend afternoon tea at Slaley Hall. It was decadent and delicious, in fact it can be adapted to suit all tastes, a variety of alcoholic drinks can accompany, if so wish including champagne! We raise a glass to Souza and the rest of the team and thank them very much for a special memory!

The food was also lovely when it eventually came. The big let down was the service. We stood in the doorway waiting to be noticed for what seemed like forever. Staff walked past several times without acknowledging us even we tried to get their attention. We sat down to enjoy our afternoon tea and realised early on that we would like more jam and cream so asked the waiter, lucky we asked when we did as it took over 10 minutes to appear. The same thing happened when we asked for more tea. The staff were pleasant enough during interactions but I have never experienced such a low level of attentiveness in such a nice place.

A point of note is that I am gluten free and the chef did a fab job of creating a suitable plate. We were served by Souza Elvis who was lovely in his service.

Had a lovely afternoon at Dukes Grill for afternoon tea. The service provided was excellent and the waiter Damaciano Souza was very attentive and made us feel very welcome. Fantastic views and food-Would definitely return.

Just got back to our room after a great meal in the Dukes Grill. The meal was made more of an occasion by the excellent, friendly and entertaining service of our waiter Damaciano. We both had the Crayfish starter and shared the rack of lamb which were both very good. Will eat here again next time we stay at Slaley Hall.

Very disappointed. Food tasted good but service was poor. Friendly on arrival but no one came to check on us in the 2 hours we were there! No explanation of what had been served, it was out down in front of us then we were left to work it out. I had afternoon tea at Rockliffe Hall not so long ago and the service was impeccable. So attentive and genuine. The staff here could learn a lot from them! As a customer service manager myself I was so disappointed. I won't be returning or recommending, which is a shame as the food itself was lovely. Thank goodness I bought this through groupon as I would not be happy paying full price-though I wonder if that was why I got poor service?

The gentleman who served myself and my partner was very friendly and professional, he was really attentive and took a genuine interest us. The recommendations for wine where very good and the red wine recommended to my other half match his meal perfect. Ok now the food wow wow wow its true what they say you get what you pay for. The bread and starters where very tasty and well presented, the main was rack of lamb for two and this was cooked to perfection and looked amazing. The desserts looked amazing my partner had coffee cake which does not sound anything special but when it came out it was a nice surprise as the home made ice cream came in an espresso cup with foam on top and looked like an espresso and then it had the cake next to it which tasted beautiful. It was expensive but worth every penny I would go back every time for a treat. The restaurant is small but very romantic.

My mother and I visited the Dukes Grill on a Sunday evening and we had a wonderful experience. Apart from one couple, we were the only guests in the restaurant and therefore the service was superb. The waitress was attentive but not intrusive and catered to our every need with a smile. The actual decor of the restaurant was beautiful and the food was great. I had the burger which was wonderfully cooked with a generous portion for a very reasonable price. My Mum also thoroughly enjoyed her dish and we thought that the entire experience was absolutely great. I would definitely recommend the Dukes Grill if you are after a relaxing evening enjoying some lovely food.

This is one of 4 bars restaurants in the hotel. It is relative small but this adds to its charm. The menu is fairly small but the selection is wide. The presentation and the food it's self is of a high standard cooked to perfection. We enjoyed the whole rack of lamb to share which was cooked to perfection. The staff were very attentive and friendly and added to a great evening. Well worth a visit for something a bit out of the ordinary.

We stopped by chance at The Percy Arms for a drink and ended up eating an amazing meal-Wednesday afternoon and very quiet but the food was delicious and the service excellent. The soup was very tasty and the steak cooked to perfection - we will return!

I’m so sad to see this lovely place closed. It had great staff and atmosphere and a fantastically good smoked haddock chowder. I wish its people all the best and I thank them for all the great visits we’ve had here. I really hope that there might be a replacement cafe of such quality. We’ll watch with interest.

Our introduction to this country pub was to a spacious, comfortable, immaculately clean bedroom, with stunning views of the fells. Next dinner and cooking of Michelin quality. A highlight was the scallop with belly pork, a brilliant dish. Next morning breakfast, again flawless in every respect from the service to the produce. Any prospective dining pub owner/chef should come here to see how it's done.

Generous portions of tasty pub food and some excellent local cask beer. The warmest of welcomes for me and Razzie the border terrier and a special shout out to Adele for looking after me so well!
