Lovey carvery with a wide choice of food which all tasted delicious. The beef and pork were both cooked beautifully. Very friendly staff throughout the pub. Great little find on a Sunday.

Booked a table for a friend's birthday brilliant staff, always there when we needed them. I had the Chicken balantyne it was absolutely stunning, freshly cooked and really juicy chicken!! Most of the party had the homemade pie which was to die for!! We were made to feel really welcome by all the staff and landlords, such a friendly attentive team!! It was my friend's birthday and the staff helped us with the cake and candles, encouraging the staff and locals to join in singing happy birthday helping my friend to feel totally special!!! This was our first experience of the Duke of York and will not be out last!! Thank you so much for helping to make my friend's birthday one to remember!!

Rubbish beer through dirty lines, a food menu which is more like a like a list of what’s not available, awful decor (Lauren and Hardy? Really??). Worst of all is the overweight owner who, along with the locals, looks you up and down when you walk in like you’re scum. Not a welcoming place at all. The outdoor areas are too pathetic to mention. A place that should be put out of its misery - or taken over by a chain and run properly. Go to the Rose and Crown in East Lambrook instead.

We liked the write up of this pub so popped in one wet and windy November night with our dog. The locals and bar staff watched us walk in. The, I assume landlord, served us and then apprached us and our dog to say he was extremely allergenic to dogs so they were not allowed. We asked if we could finish our drinks before leaving and he agreed. We didn't see a sign saying no dogs, there may well have been one. But they are not welcome and we didn't feel welcome either. We found other local pubs happy to have dogs and us.

Popped in a couple of weeks ago but no food due to rugby. One of our group phoned up yesterday to ask if they were doing food this lunchtime. When we turned up there was no one eating but they had a table of 3 coming in and a group of 10 said they might be able to fit us in about an hour later. Don't know many pubs that can turn away custom particularly in a rural area. Don't see them lasting long at this rate as 13 covers should be nothing for a venue of this size. Use to come here fairly regularly but won't rush back if this is the best they can do.

We stopped at The Duke of York in the beautiful village of Shepton Beauchamp for lunch on the way to Cornwall. A friendly welcome and delicious food (with quite a selection of vegetarian and vegan meals too), what more could you want? Outside are paved seating areas and inside plenty of space in and around the bar. There’s a dining area too.

We booked a table for 3, turned up to find that the bar had a massive TV on for the rugby at full volume as did the dining area. We were offered a table in a side room off the bar which is a dismal room anyway but still couldn't hear ourselves think Walked out very disappointed, the blaring TVs were not mentioned when I booked

we visited on Fathers day for a Sunday Roast. Because of Covid restrictions the food is plated, but what a plate. We went with my daughter, her husband and three grandaughters and we all had amazing meals. I had the beef, as did my husband and you could not fault it. there was a large array of vegetables, carrots, swede, cabbage, brussel sprouts, new potatoes and roast potatoes, accompanied by yorkshire pudding. we also endulged in dessert, sticky toffee pudding for him and waffles for me, with cream or ice cream. the waitress was very attentive and polite, it was a very enjoyable lunch, much needed.

We visit the pub regularly and this has prevented me from reviewing normally as a bit biased. However, we visited last night 6/3/20 as a family of three. Food was excellent! Katsu pork and halloumi fries to start and for mains 2 of the party had belly pork in a wild mushroom sauce and 1 had a creamy mushroom fricasee which the chef kindly adapted to a pasta dish rather than rice with no hesitation. The waitress was very attentive and polite and looked after us well. Lovely village pub, fantastic owners and staff and an excellent chef. Would recommend any day!

We went to Duke of York after visiting Barrington Court - the main bar was fairly busy, but we chose to eat in the restaurant which was fairly quiet. The lunch time menu is quite limited, about 4 different choices, all at £9.99 which was good value. When the food came it was very tasty and nice and warm, but I would have liked a little more choice if honest. Just the addition of a nice homemade Lasagne would have made a difference. The staff were lovely and kept checking everything was OK.If you are just looking for good pub food, nothing too fancy, then Duke of York could suit you. The evening menu offers much more choice.

Staying for a few days near Barrington Court we tried the Duke of York due to positive reviews. The pub has a good atmosphere although where we had our meal in the restaurant we thought it was a bit stark. We were the only ones in there at the time but it could be a more welcoming space.A very large menu on the board, which can be a bad sign. All the meals came with a choice of different potatoes, or rice and vegetables although not stipulated on the board as no room. We had Hake and chips - fish portion on the smallish size. Lamb shank was said to be delicious, beef strips were okay. I had the half Guinea fowl in a creamy tarragon sauce which was very good. Chips were crispy but a mild criticism is the dauphinoise potatoes tasted from a tin and were not made in the kitchen so a bit disappointing. Very good value though - four meals and four drinks came to just under £60.If you want a meal without breaking the bank I would definitely recommend this pub.

It’s not often you find a real local English pub these days but we found by chance today. The Duke of York Shepton Beauchamp. We’d walked around Barrington and had to decamp from the Boar as they weren’t serving food until 12.30 so we popped in here on our way to Ilminster. Lovely welcome from the lady behind the bar and on enquiry about food ( we only wanted a snack ) we were directed to the chef. Friendly locals in a real pu/ to boot. I had a bacon and ham baguette which was brimming with both, plenty to eat with very very good chips and a salad that was fresh! My wife had the Vietnamese rolls which were both plentiful and good. Glad we made the effort as they certainly did. Could well be back with my walking group in October.

Nice community pub in quiet village. The Sunday carvery is generous (beef or pork) and well supported with all the trimmings. Beats a lot of work back home. The beer - Otter Bright - served far too cold for my taste. It wasn't until I had completely polished off my plate that I was able to enjoy the character of this fine ale. Quite put me off a second. If you walk over the hill above the pub car park a splendid vista of the early Elizabethan house, Barrington Court (a Wolf Hall filming location) will hove into view, and then you can march down again..

Turned up on a Thursday night and it was 'Steak Night', 2 10oz Rumps for £22.50. Steaks were perfectly cooked, with trimmings (mushrooms, tomato and onion rings) and a small bucket of chips. Meal was truly excellent. Pub is down a country lane but don't let that put you off. It has a friendly 'local' atmosphere. I have 2 adverse comments, but I recognise that these are purely personal and may well not be seen as negatives by everyone! There's a pub labrador who likes to 'visit' while you're eating. Also, I have an allergy to cleaning products such as disinfectant and the smell of this in the back entrance from the car park is quite strong. We sat by the front window well away from this though.

The rest of us had as much meat as we directed and topped up the plate with a fine selection of vegetables, Yorkshire pudding and very good gravy. We all had a drink to wash the lunch down and very little was left on our plates when we had finished. So full that not one of us could managed one of their wonderful selection of sweets/puddings. There is a separate TA site for this pub for its accommodation, so i have posted on that in the hotels section. The pub itself had several real ales on tap and having tried several, I can report that they were all good and someone certainly knows how to keep a decent pint. Wifi in the room and pub was a little on the slow side at times, but I guess it is a fair way from the local exchange. We decided to eat at the pub on the one night and I was pleased to see that they had a variety of pies on the menu served with mash and garden or mushy peas. The pies were advertised as real pies and I am glad to say that having ordered the beef and stilton, they were just that, none of those imitation things in a dish with puff pastry on top. Whilst I enjoyed my meal, I was a little surprised to find it also contained mushrooms, as this wasn't as advertised on the menu and I know many people dislike mushrooms, be warned. It gave the impression rightly or wrongly of padding out the pie to reduce the meat content. I would have liked the mash to have been a little more buttery or creamier, but the portion size was ok and certainly the stilton flavour came through nicely. My wife went for the braised lamb shank, which she very much enjoyed. The pudding menu had several of my favourites, but I couldn't stop myself ordering the Pavlova with whipped cream, summer berries and raspberry coulis, as this tops my favourites list. Unfortunately, when it came, I was a little disappointed as the meringue base was very chewy and brown, fortunately, the chef came out shortly after to see if everyone was enjoying their meals (a nice touch) and when I explained the problem, he soon took it away and replaced it with a more acceptable meringue and although not perfect, I ate the lot.I did forget to put in my hotel report, that the breakfast here is very good indeed and the Landlord who doubles as the breakfast chef, is very adaptable to your needs.

Having been unable to book a table elsewhere we booked here, having read the reviews on Trip Advisor. We arrived for an 18:45 table (the time they start food on a Saturday evening), and we were shown to a table in the rear 'restaurant' area. Sadly the atmosphere back there didn't do the place justice. The Duke of York has a very nice menu, and a great selection of pies. Between the three of us one had steak and stilton pie and mash, one chicken, ham and leek pie and chips and the other the duck breast. At £9.95 for the pies, it was very reasonable value, and the chips were excellent. It was disappointing though that the only veg options with the pies were garden peas or mushy peas (and I like neither!).The duck was very nice, with its sweet and sour blueberry sauce, crushed new potatoes with garlic and pak choi and was well worth the £14.95 price tag.The sweet menu was also good, and the Somerset Apple Cake was enjoyable.Other meals we saw being served, including a range of burgers and pizzas, all looked very nice. The service was very good and the waitresses attentive (there didn't seem to be any male staff at all), despite there being a BBQ outside with a big crowd of locals, as well as a growing band of other diners inside. For me though, the only let down was the ambiance. Certainly on our 'approved' list and one which we'll return to.

It's hard to be neutral about a pub which is 20 yards from your front door, but this is a proper pub - excellent Otter Ale, guest beers (currently Potholer) and Thatchers Gold for the cider drinker. A good atmosphere, seems to get livelier in the evening, but pretty quiet and relaxed at lunchtimes and afternoons. Good food and an excellent Sunday carvery - we're not carvery fans generally, but this was everything one should be. Recommended - whether or not you live 20 yards away!

My wife and I have visited the pub on a Thursday lunch time where a good value lunch is served. The choice of mains and sweets is really good. Well cooked and well presented.

Called in for a drink with friends who thought the pub would be good. Was disappointed to find the person who said he was the landlord appeared to be drunk - he was certainly offensive and not at all welcoming. We left after only one drink and will not be returning.

My partner and I often go to the pub for Sunday lunch with friends and family. There is a carvery with a choice of 2 meats 4 or 5 veg etc. Cost is under £9 and the helpings of meat are generous. The restaurant is quite small however we have always found a space either in there or in the adjoining bar. the service is excellent. We have also visited early one Saturday evening and even though it was busy the steaks arrived within 15 minutes and we thought they were really good. Cost about £14 per head.

We stayed here as a one night stop on our way down to the West Country. It is an inn in the middle of the small village of Shepton Beauchamp, about 10 mins north of Shepton Mallet.Food can be had at either the bar or in the restaurant area; the same menu covers both. There are a total of four rooms at the back. These look like a stable conversion, but in fact are brand new. Two are standard rooms, one is a 'bridal' room and one is a self catering room with a small kitchen. All are very nice furnished with en suite shower rooms (the bridal has, I believe, a jacuzzi). If you are looking for the English Inn stay, then I would totally recommended staying here.A good host (the husband and wife team have just done 10 years), a very good chef, and comfortable rooms.

We had 2 breakfasts but neither were very hot. It was busy and we never got checked on. When the food is not hot and the service not great it frustrates me as weve had some good meals here so maybe depends on whos in the kitchen that day.

Poor attitude towards customers. I went into the cafe and ordered a coffee. Paid for the coffee. Then I was told there is a 15minute wait. Manageress was called over to help with the refund. The girl at the till was nice but the manageress made me feel like it was my fault. They were busy she said. So how I am meant to know that? There were plenty of empty tables and I was the only person at the till! Apparently it is normal to wait 15minutes for your coffee. Really?

Best gammon that me and the missus has ever had. Nice buttery roasties and plenty of vegetable options. Plenty of seating and car parking spaces. Nice large outside area for summer time food and drink. Staff were friendly and reasonably priced food. Downside was that the carpets needed a really good clean, but I'm sure that this will be seen too in the not too distant future.

The Lord Nelson is our local so an easy choice for a family get-together to celebrate our ruby wedding anniversary. We had a table for 20 and took over the skittle alley which doubles as a function room. Everyone attending had a great time and the pub and staff received lots of compliments. They are all extremely friendly and professional, and Mark’s food is excellent. Not sure we’ll make the skittles team though!
