Duke of Wellington in County Durham

First the staff were excellent. The issue was we booked and special lunch for my elderly parents. When we arrived we were told they were closing for a refurb and were running down stock. We were handed a long list of what wasn't available. It was also very cold. Better communication in advance would have helped.

Its a nice local pub, food decent and staff excellent. Needs a refurb which starts next week so should address any shortcomings.

First visit, great Sunday lunch and starters, generous portion size, friendly staff, will be returning.

At the price a very nice turkey dinner, gravy was tasty and asked for a little more which wasn't an issue. £4.50 for Carlin's is also ok.

Pub was very busy but we didn't wait long to be acknowledged. Showed to our table by very friendly man. Orders were already in and a very excited lady served us. Food was delicious and large portions.

Nice homely feeling from the Christmas decorations and the staff. Lovely food and good quick service even when busy.

We come for brunch most Sundays and we can’t fault it. Team are so friendly- the two ladies who work most Sunday mornings know our orders- go the extra mile. Diane who has been there for years and the manageress. We will continue to use it over the other local as it’s just way better- didn’t use to be but over the last couple of years it’s just improved!

Long wait to order drinks, cold food served to three out of four people food service poor. Will not visit again! Very poor all around!

Great pub with friendly, helpful staff. Good selection of drinks and cask ales. Food is typical pub fare, though none the worse for that! Open fires (gas?) add atmosphere in colder weather though sadly, they're not always lit. Welcoming interior but the outside is overdue a makeover!

Excellent service as always from Diane. Warm and friendly making you feel like one of the family. Always a warm welcome at the Duke.

The staff set up the table perfect for our office christmas lunch. Food was gorgeous. Can't wait to go back.

Visited The Duke of Wellington ,Sat 30th Nov for a birthday lunch. 2 of us. ( Male) . Both ordered Prawn Cocktail & Christmas lunch with turkey. I derive no pleasure in stating outright & without hesitation that the food was less than average. If there was a score below 1 Star I'd have scored that. I chose The D of W because I believed it has an excellent reputation. Our food was dire. * Prawn Cocktails ( with lemon wedge & bread). Lettuce, Mari- Rose sauce & Prawns. That's it. A minimalist amount. Tomato, cumber, water cress ?...None. I'd give my cat more prawns than this & if they were King prawns then I'm my cat's Mother. The best part of the PC was the bread !! We're they child's portions ? * Main Course. Turkey Christmas lunch. Think re- heated school dinner. Think microwaved larger dinner- for- 1. Think warm not hot. Not tasty. Sums it up so well. Nothing freshly cooked about our meals at all. Limp, tasteless carrots & red cabbage & with turkey & pigs blankets (2 per plate) that had a " re- heat" taste about them. Minimal gravy. What about a gravy boat for 2 adults ? Too much to ask ? There are countless restaurants we could have chosen for this what was supposed to be a special occasion. But I chose the D of W...to our cost. No...we couldn't bothered to complain. I dont want to complain. We just wanted decent, wholesome, hot, tasty food. We're just ordinary people. We just won't come back. Ever. The D of W was busy but I don't know how you achieve this offering food of this calibre....no calibre. I visit Toby Carveries at least once a month & their food is light years ahead of the food we were served today...and most of the time less than half the price & much larger portions. ( The Gent who served us was at least friendly. He was the highlight of our visit !) What does it take to " Murder" food such as we consumed? Is there special skills required ? Read: More than disappointing. Resembled school dinners. Not cheap. Not hot. Small Prawn Cocktail with classic ingredients missing. Never again.

I was just wondering why on Ember Inns menu/website they have grilled sea bass filled with ... and bearnaise sauce, while in Durham, sea bass is now served with ... curry, instead of sauce! For me, not a good change .

My husband, grandson and I visited the Duke of Wellington for Sunday lunch and we were not disappointed. We all decided on the turkey dinner and it was delicious..Turkey was cooked to perfection and the vegetables were gorgeous. Our visit was made even more perfect by the staff..they were outstanding. Ordering the food was hassle free and they tended to our every need. Thank you Diane, Neil, Dan , Paul and Chris for making our Sunday lunch perfect. Highly recommend this pub for food and drinks.

Brilliant. The meals here are lovely. Good service with a ready smile. Plus if you join Ember Inns you get vouchers to make it a bit cheaper. What's not to like.

Lovely cosy pub and tasty food! Great atmosphere. Our party was well looked after, and my steak was deliciously cooked to perfection! There were a great selection of drinks including wines, gin and whiskey. I will certainly be recommending this pub. Thank you.

Neil and staff are always friendly and helpful and the choice of drinks is quite extensive backed up by a wide and varied menu.

Steak sandwich was tough. Ignored at bar whilst asking where our food was 40 minutes after ordering.

Food was good enough. Probably wouldn’t rush back. Staff were friendly and efficient though and service was quick.

Decent beer selection and good food for a chain. Would recommend booking for su day lunch although we were lucky. Beef rib roast was particularly good.

Service is amazing, decided to order 2 drinks to save going back to bar while eating, waiter said to let him know when ready for 2nd drink and brought to table so it was freshly poured. Food was delicious, cooked to perfection and service was quick. Lovely atmosphere in pub too.

We visited 3 times over a weekend while staying near Durham, and on each occasion the staff were excellent. Found us a table the first night because they were full, but managed to fit us in. The food was great, the service was great. Very friendly with a great atmosphere. Well done Kirsten and all the team.

Called in for Sunday lunch but did not serve chicken off the bone and my fiancee doesn't like bones so can't comment on the food.

Had a great meal recently with friends. I had tandoori chicken skewers and it was fabulous. Chicken was so moist and tasty. Accompaniments so tasty. Would definitely recommend

After walking my dog I love the fact that if the weather is bad we can still go inside for something to eat or drink .The staff are all fabulous and helpful. but Diane always has a lovely warm, friendly welcome and always goes above and beyond to make you feel at “ home”. She is knowledgeable on the menu and drinks and makes the best Hot Chocolate. She is an asset to the pub and Ember Inns.

Warm & welcoming establishment which we visited on Bank Holiday Monday for lunch with family. Our reserved table was ready for us upon our arrival & both the meals and drinks were excellent.

I was looking for a place in Durham to have an early dinner - the Duke of Wellington was chosen and I can honestly say it was a very good choice! To begin from, no problem with a parking space. Quite spacious interior, which has retained the character of a typical British pub. Variety of good draft beers at the counter. The list of dishes on the menu is not very long, but there is certainly something for everyone, and we did not have to wait too long for the dishes to be served. I am sure I will visit the place again, if I am in Durham.

I love this place. The food is good and the staff are very friendly. The only problem is that almost all of the tables are booked in advance, so you are very lucky if you can get a table when you just walk in off the street. This is very unusual for a pub. If they didn't allow this we could get a table every time we go.

We come every week for the pup quiz and we always have an absolutely fantastic time! Staff, food and atmosphere is lovely.

Pre booked meal for 6 at Duke of Wellington Durham, and the atmosphere and food were excellent. The staff are friendly and efficient even though there was a trainee who, with support from colleagues, delivered the same excellent service and to top it all there was a very competitive quiz which most of the pub part took of. Will visit again soon.

How far would we travel for an Ember Inn? We know it's worth it! Understand Ember Inns have c150 UK venues & we've got 3 within easy travelling distance to us and I know if we're away we'll certainly look up where the nearest ones are because they're excellent. Not only do they have a wide choice menu you get excellent meals at a fair price. We had fish dish, pie and lasagne and all were really good....beautifully cooked. We're also lucky in that our locals have good clean décor, nice staff and great service.. Cant fault them and feel really satisfied afterwards. Thank you.

The rain stopped us from enjoying the lovely outside area but inside was comfortable, warm and welcoming. The Sunday roast was hearty, tasty and plentiful, the staff went above and beyond to meet our needs. Highly recommended!

The atmosphere is lovely and the staff are really friendly and efficient but its the food. I had the fishcakes which I had had previously on my last visit,they were delicious This time they were not nice at all. The coating was chewey and had a burnt aftertaste which made them hard to cut up. The fishcakes were one of the more expensive meals. It was my second visit and seems like the standards are slipping already and the food is not consistent...Shame.

I recently dined at The Duke of Wellington and had a wonderful experience. The pub's charming and cozy atmosphere made it an ideal setting for a relaxed evening. I opted for the beef & red wine lasagne which were cooked to perfection. The service was excellent, with friendly and attentive staff ensuring a pleasant meal. The Duke of Wellington is a great spot for a satisfying pub dinner. Highly recommended!

I recently visited the Duke of Wellington with my two young kids and had a fantastic experience. The food was really good, and the two-course meal cost us £50, which was reasonable for the quality. The staff were amazing—very friendly and accommodating, making us feel welcome. The food arrived in a timely manner, which is always a plus when dining with little ones.

Spent a few dsys with my brother in Bearpark... visited the DUKE om 2 occasions for lunch and dinner. Cant praise the food enough...1st class.. We were served by DIANE on both occasions,cant fault her service it was beyond excellent..Nothing was to much bother to her ...5star staff service. Will be back at some stage,looking forward to Diane's service again

Love this pub. Always clean and welcoming. New menu has been launched and the food is always delicious. The tandoori chicken skewers were delicious. Decided on a dessert Eton mess sundae was well presented and looked and tasted amazing. Friendly clean pub with a massive choice of delicious food

I have just had a beautiful lunch at the Duke of Wellington. The chicken, bacon and avocado wrap is truly delicious and has an exceptional filling on top of flat bread. We were served by Diane and she is so professional and knowledgeable. My grandson is gluten free, she knew exactly what he could have to eat. Thank you Diane and the rest of the team for making a wonderful lunchtime experience.

Absolutely lovely warm friendly welcome from Diane, as always. I always love coming here because I feel like part of the Duke family. Diane always goes above and beyond. She is so knowledgeable about the menu and I often ask her advice. She now knows my likes and dislikes and always makes me aware if something new is available that she thinks I will like. She is extremely professional, thoughtful and courteous. I’ve noticed how flexible she is and covers all rolls. She is a great Team player and helps and encourages new members of staff. Diane is an absolute star. She is a credit not only to the Duke but the Company .
