Our family arrived for lunch on a Tuesday lunchtime. We ordered drinks and lunch for 5. An hour later it arrived. There was no warning in advance that there would be such a delay and no apology or even acknowledgement afterwards. The pub was not particularly busy. Was it worth the wait? No. When it arrived the food was average at best.

Visited my local for Sunday carvery with a party of 9, prebooked and confirmed via email. On arrival no one was aware of our booking, this was once we could convey this to several oblivious staff members. A very apologetic Craig immediately organised us a table. Quickly It came apparently that there was insufficient food left for 3 of us, this was after the rest of the party were already sat eating. Craig again sorted this.....bless him, because the manageress offered no explanation (other than "I didn't write it in the book") or apology. When airing my thoughts she simply walked back into the kitchen. Thanks for that 👍

Was looking forward to traditional English food in a traditional English pub. The choice was limited and my partner and I both chose a Ploughmans. What a disappointment, there was a good slice of delicious ham but then two small triangles of tasteless cheese, salad, pickles and a small piece of dry focaccia . We had to ask for the pork pie that was meant to come with the meal but wished we hadn’t as it was tiny with damp stodgy pastry and a tasteless anaemic looking piece of something inside. What an embarrassment of a meal to serve to patrons who come for English fayre. With all the gorgeous cheeses and delicious pork pies in the UK it is sad to be served such a pitiful excuse for a meal.

I am writing this review from the extremely hard, rickety bed of the hotel. The hotel itself has an extremely unpleasant smell, I would go as far as to say they need to replace to carpets. It STINKS. I actually gagged. On entering our room we had to open all windows. The room is tidy but by no means clean. The toilet was filthy before we had even used it, hairs on it and stains (well, I hope stains as I do not intend to investigate to closely!!) The whole place needs a lick of paint, the rooms have paint coming off the walls and woodwork, toothpaste splats up the wall. I’m disgusted. I have never stayed in a place so revolting. I am glad we are only here for one night, in fact I have tried to book into a different hotel in the area for the night with no such luck. My partner claims the shower is powerful. I am not sure I can bring myself to try it. An awful end to our honeymoon, I have never felt so disappointed. I can’t wait to go home!

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We visited on 9th June at lunchtime. Most of our party of 6 had the carvery. The plates were extremely small so it was difficult to get what I'd consider an adult portion. You may have been able to get seconds, but as the roast potatoes were actually coldv(not even slightly warm) it was not a consideration. The meat portion was very meager and barely warm. Yorkshire puddings were dried out and cold. Bizarrely the only items that were popping hot were the cabbage and the gravy (the latter being a saving grace to make the meal warm enough to eat!) Also there was no stuffing or other usual accompaniments that you'd expect with a roast. I felt this was poor when offering a carvery!? Shame, as the meal seemed well cooked and tasty. We thought about complaining, but we had hiked for miles and were starving. Plus it was to celebrate our friend's birthday and she had chosen the venue. It seemed inappropriate to make her feel bad for the recommendation. I notified the bar staff that the kitchen needed to be informed ye carvery was not warm. Salt, with this experience, we feel we cannot recommend. With so many other places to eat, wed likely cost another venue next time we return. On a positive note, the staff were all polite and welcoming.

We came here for an evening meal whilst on holiday. The pub was clearly short staffed - we heard that the chef was on his own in the kitchen and there only appeared to be two other people serving at the bar. No one spoke to us at any time, to ask if everything was OK or if we needed anything and we had to tell the people on the next table that they had to order at the bar, as they were clearly wanting to order food but neither member of staff had noticed them. We both had fish and chips which seemed OK at the time, but we both woke up feeling extremely queasy during the night and this was the only thing that we had both eaten or drunk that was the same. The pub was too busy for the number of staff working and customer service and food quality had clearly suffered.

Do not stay here. Pictures are incredibly misleading, I have no idea why the reviews are so good. Staff are clueless and unhygienic and all smoke outside door to room stairs so you have no choice but to walk past. Nobody says hello or thanks for staying or anything. Man on bar in evening was nice and friendly so was chef so made it slightly better. Chef was super friendly at breakfast but also cooking with door open and swearing and talking loudly with staff. I felt so uncomfortable after seeing the state of the kitchen I couldn’t eat. Place dark and dindgy and Wi-Fi terrible. Room is really dated and in poor condition. Shower lukewarm and toilet seat plastic, my mum nearly fell off several times, carpet extremely dated and dirty. Glasses dirty, overpriced bar and food. We felt so unsafe in the room and not even a full sized single bed but at least the beds and linen were clean and so was the bathroom.

We came here for the Sunday carvery on Mother's Day. We were served by Rachael who was delightful. The Head Chef, Kari, is new and did a brilliant job on a really busy shift. Really good value for money. My only reason for dropping a star is that food was served on cold plates and as we had some of the elements at the end of their serving pots, food wasn't as hot as I would have liked. If this could be fixed it would definitely be 5 stars for me.

Appalling food, the kitchen here really let their team down, they had an A- board outside that said "support your local pub" so we thought they're right you should, rather than go to the Fullers down the road. Well unfortunately they aren't doing much here to support, none of the food was good, but I ordered the sausage and mash, the sausages may well have been baked first, but upon reheating they'd definitely been in the fryer leaving them horribly overcooked, it was all overcooked and greasy and seemed like the fryer oil had not been changed lately, my partner's fish was also not good. The front of house were pleasant, but ultimately in a place that people are predominantly coming in for food, you need to do a lot better than that!

We've eaten here before, so rebooted for today. The place is nive and warm, plenty of staff, with good service. We ordered food, mine was the chicken curry. The food arrived in good time. The curry was nice BUT the chicken in the curry was poor quality. Plenty of chicken but all the bad bits weren't cut off. The curry sauce was stunning . Maybe you should serve fhe curry with 4 to 5 decent size chunks of clean pieces of chicken breast and not offer too much chicken with the grisly bits left on. This could have been a great meal in a good location.. needs attention. Also stop using sachets of cheap brown sauce and pay a few extra pence for HP. toilets were clean but no toilet roll too.

Absolutely disgusting! Never have I ever had a pub food that bad! The food took ages to come and it was very bad! We ordered Pizza, fish & chips and Lasagne are all very very bad. Tastless, small portion and expensive for what you get! Even the chip! The chips! What kind of self-respecting pub gets the chips wrong! And don't get me starting on the "Duke platter" as a starter to share. We got 3 breaded small prawns, 1 chicken tender ( for honesty it was the best tasting food in the entire evening), 3 fried gyoza ( really greasy) a really bad garlic bread( I'm not even sure that was butter!) Wasn't even enough to share! The Lasagne was exactly two sheets with almost no meat in between. Just loads of cheese on top. No flavour at all! No professional staff at all or even a good service. Save your money and calories and don't go there. The worst pub ever!

Having rented a holiday cottage in Bourton on the Water for a week with my partner and Jack Rusell dog, we went to the Duke of Wellington most evenings. The staff were really friendly and accomodating, the atmosphere was brilliant, the Guiness was to die for and always poured to perfection. There was a great selection of wines and gin. We ate on three separate occasions, which included the Xmas Special. You were required to pre-book the meal which we did. When we arrived the following evening, we were shown to a little cosy alcove all to ourselves, which had been beautifully decorated. Considering we had a dog in tow this was really not expected and was truly amazing. The food was exceptional, Xmas dinner with all the trimmings, cooked to perfection, fresh produce, plentiful and brought to the table piping hot. On the two other occasions we had the Curry of the Day, Thai Red Curry Rice and Nan which was superb, the wonderful barmaid even reserved the last helping they had for us. We also had the Gourmet Chicken Burger which was gorgeous and the Lasagne, which was clearly homemade and very tasty. We were introduced to the pubs three dogs which where brought down from upstairs, being dog lovers this was a really nice moment. We had a fantastic time in this pub and would throughly recommend The Duke of Wellington.

Reading previous reviews this is not a hotel, They are a pub with letting rooms so wasn’t expecting the full hotel experience, but they went above and beyond when asked! It’s a local family run business! Prices are adequate for what they provide! Cheapest around bourton, breakfast option has plenty of choices! Had to leave early one morning for business, If you can’t be around at their times of opening for breakfast, they will accommodate when asked to do more! Absolutely amazing from the staff! New menu has just launched from what I’ve heard and it’s amazing to see staff enjoying what they are serving! Been to many places in bourton and local discount is a thing in this area. Refuse to pay more than the guy before because I’m not local! This place is the only fair priced pub in bourton, They treat people equal rather than charging certain people more! Local pub, local prices for non locals also! When we arrived we noticed a bit of clutter, but saw staff moving heavy items and cleaning high and lows, when speaking to them they’ve just closed one of their other sites, meaning they had a lot of equipment to store, which is explains the slight clutter, by the end of our stay, it was all tidied up and everything looked amazing! Clearly previous reviews aren’t accurate or understanding, this is not a HUGE pub chain! The only family run pub in the bourton from what I’ve found so far! Highly recommend!

Terrible food and disorganised staff. We arrived for our prebooked table for 7 of us and our 3 dogs for our mum's 70th birthday. We were seated by a member of staff, and my partner went round the side to the bar to order us drinks. He said he heard a member of staff complaining 'theres a table of 7 sat in the restaurant and they have dogs" rolling her eyes in a stroppy tone. She then came round to us saying loudly "no dogs in the restaurant, you need to sit in the bar area for hygiene reasons" I explained we had been sat there my a member of staff and she just said "well you can't sit here so you need to move" and she ushered us to a table round the bar area. We then went to order at the bar, and asked if we needed to order as one so everything arrived together, we were assured it would all come at the same time as they knew we were all together. Two meals came out first, and they were almost finished being eaten by the time the next ones came out. The food quailty was appalling. Bland, dry, and tight portion sizes. I had the veggie burger which was actually gross, the inside was like slime and I couldn't even eat it.. my niece had soup and it tasted like it had been watered down to an inch of its life. Horrible. For such a beautiful, popular location this place must just rely on natural footfall for business and know it doesn't need to up its game. But Boughton has tons of choice and if you are visiting this area I would advise researching and picking somewhere else, especially as British pub grub can be absolutely amazing.

Well where do I start. I had to go to the invisible reception to check in which I was told was around the back. Turn out this is the bar. After looking silly as couldn't find reception, the same person I asked where to check in checked me in. I was there for a total of 4 nights. It was absolutely horrible. Room smells of damp, no housekeeping in sight and didn't see another member of staff after check in throughout my stay. I could not go to reception as there wasn't one and wasn't going to go into a crowded bar to ask about a room. As I was here on business I was out for the day at a reasonable hour (08.00) so the offering of breakfast at 08.30 was pointless, but paid for. Checking out is the most shocking, as with no reception I had to go out the back door which I had to unlock and leave the key on the side, for anyone to wonder in. No security, no housekeeping, no reception, no staff. I have stopped all around the country on business and this is the worst hotel I have stayed in. Will never return.

After booking a table for 8 people, 2 weeks in advance, we arrived at 1-45pm for a 2 pm booking. We were shown to the most abysmal table, in a corner, which I swear was a table for 4, with extra seats squeezed in. Anyhow, we went to the bar to order our food, only to be told that only 2 carveries were available, after ordering 8. Well, disappointed wasn’t the word. They said that most other things were available, great if you are a burger fan. We’ll, to try and retrieve something of our outing, we ordered different things for our Bank Holiday Sunday Lunch. These other meals consisted of:— sausage & mash, a sandwich, 3x fish & chips and a Jacket potato. Now, after serving the 2 carveries, the rest of us waited, & waited, & waited. Eventually, 4 of the meals arrived, 2 of the fish & chips, the sandwich, and the sausage and mash, so all concerned eat their meals, commenting on the fresh fish. So when all had eaten and finished their meals, 2 of us were still waiting. By this time it was 2-50pm, so I went to the bar and enquired as to what was happening. I was told that the food was at that moment being prepared. We’ll we sat and waited another 10 minutes, when one of the staff approached us and asked what we had ordered, ABSOLUTELY UNBELIEVABLE!!!! We yet again told them and they said they would bring it shortly. When it arrived, the fish and chips were DIABOLICAL. A microwaved, burned, frozen fish, a few inedible peas, and a few, and I mean a few hard chips, which they had charged £18 for alone. Alas, complaining went into deaf ears, I informed them that I was going to put a terrible review, only to be replied with a shrug of their shoulders, and a comment “well, it is bank holiday Sunday” So, I asked why they had accepted the booking if they knew there was going to be problems. NO COMMENT. So, save yourselves the hassle, DO NOT GO TO THE DUKE OF WELLINGTON IN BOURTON ON THE WATER. Possibly one of the dirtiest disgusting eateries I have ever had the misfortune to visit.

Popped in here for a beer and ended up staying all night, ordering food and joining in the Sunday night quiz! Service at the bar was slow but friendly. Food was good, really enjoyed the bacon & blue cheese burger.

Good pub with a very nice outside area next to a stream. Decent food at probably the most reasonable prices in town , and a selection of real ales.

Best pub in town in our opinion. If you want to dodge the crowds and have a nice pint either by the river Windrush or inside to watch sports this is your place. Truly a local place not tourist-y and is just a great pub....

A really good old fashioned pub. The menu is old school pub fair, "nowt poncy" just well made. The background music was proper vinyl on a turntable, with the whole album played. Our dog was given a treat before settling down to sleep in front of the fire 🔥😊.

Had a very nice meal here, celebrating a birthday. It was a blessing to find a restaurant that wasn't enforcing a Christmas menu and music. Not being local we had no knowledge of the area, so this was a pleasant surprise. We had a great time, the staff were friendly and helpful and we didn't feel rushed to vacate our table. The food was great and good value. Very happy with the overall experience and will be booking again.
