Greate location. Lovely food and staff.

Friendly staff, a predominantly fish menu. We had beef for 2 which once cooked as requested was delicious. Nice non alcoholic cocktails. Staff friendly. Ran out of coffee-hadn’t been for years but would come again.

First ever review as felt so strongly In conclusion, a rip off with bad management that used to be great. In full: A gem when it opened, has gone down hill so much. It was our fourth visit and we came for October best (a deal restaurants put on in oct) and were so disappointed. Online menu said eel, duck etc. reality was ‘mushroom carpaccio’ (chopped up raw mushroom with some oil and Parmesan) and the most under-seasoned ‘courgette fritter’ ever made. Asked the manager about the change and he said it was seasonal - first nothing on there was seasonal and second this menu was designed for October so not sure how they didn’t design it to be in season for October. We went with it as wanted the experience anyway, but sadly the food was very bland and we were served all 5 courses before we’d been there half an hour - our bottle of wine came with the fourth course. As we’d finished our food and has 3/4 of a bottle of wine left, we asked to sit outside to finish it and we were told the tables had been cleared even though we could see them outside. We complained for the second time after paying the bill at the end, and the manager told us he wouldn’t have made us pay, but then proceeded to offer nothing to make up for it, no explanation for the changed menu and made no apology. Such a shame as we loved coming here before. P.s. our waiter was lovely thank you!

£18 for two non alcoholic G&Ts! Not good value for money!

Firstly can I say food 5 stars; staff 5 stars; ambience 5 stars. However let down by toilet facilities. Need more regular checking and kept up to a more acceptable level, as the floor was very wet (suspicious) as was the seat. If these had been better checked and cleaned it would have been an overall 5 star. I'm putting this in to make you aware of the problem, but that wouldn't necessarily stop me visiting again.

Great food, prices are not too high as one might expect for the fantastic quality of food and service. Right by the beach. Lovely children’s menu.

Visited Due South and had a really lovely meal. To start we had wonderful Tuna tartare with avocado and Burrata with fresh peach, hazelnuts and honey mustard dressing then really lovely Cote de boeuf to share and finally, a wonderful chocolate and hazelnut ice cream desert. Lovely cocktails too and perfect service. The whole experience was great.

5 of us arrived with no reservation on a very hot day, when Brighton was extremely busy. We were seated quickly, with extra chairs for friends who we thought might join us. Our waiter (I regret not taking his name but he had chin length curly hair) was incredibly friendly as he talked us through the menu concept & different sized dishes. Drinks were served in good time. We could not fault the food- fresh, delicious & beautifully presented with well-considered flavour combinations. Stand out dishes were the tuna tartare and prawn & scallop ravioli. Our other friends were waylaid so didn’t make it to the restaurant, but we were not made to feel that this was an issue, which we really appreciated given how busy the whole seafront was. We all felt we paid a fair price for the quality of food and drink we had and the service received. Will definitely visit again!

Sorry. I have no idea why this place gets such good reviews as today we were unable to experience the food. Arrived in time for our table of 3, our third guest was to join us. Seated at a table of 2 chairs with the promise of a third chair. We waited for ages then finally found our own chair. Suffice it to say after 45 minutes and despite ordering cocktails, wine and food - all we’d had bought to our table was a bottle of water. So we left. The staff were doing their best but there were only two front of house and it just didn’t work. This restaurant charges premium prices ( approx £30 for a main course). But if you’re going to charge these prices they need to be backed up by enough staff to provide premium service. This was in no way the servers fault - purely management. Unless you want to spend your dining experience waiting for an inordinately long time avoid this place. Such a shame.

Have been coming to Brighton for decades for fresh seafood and what a pleasant find - really excellent food and service. We know the spot very well as previously R&F - happy we took a chance as we thoroughly enjoyed. Oysters were so fresh that we ordered another dozen rather than mains. Kids menu are 3 courses and excellently prepared.

My husband and I had a lovely meal at this busy seafront Brasserie-style restaurant with a focus on fish. We had the most sumptuous seafood raviolo smothered in a fantastic veloute that contained delicately aromatic fennel and a very subtle hint of coconut. This dish was a real stand-out. We also had fresh, well cooked, barbecued mackerel with chimichurri, baby new potatoes roasted and herby, and heritage tomato salad. The dessert was super indulgent- chocolate hazelnuts cream - heaven. We shared a bottle of wine, and it came to £130 including a tip. The cooking is very good, staff are attentive and friendly. We went on a Saturday night so the music was cranked up and the whole venue was noisy but we liked that. I imagine a week night might be a little more chilled and quiet if that’s your preference.

Danny was the man. He shared his in depth experience about the food with me and my friend who funny enough did not even like seafood but when he tasted the sea bass he was over the moon. Great rose wine. Views . It’s everything I need after a long days work. Made my day . Thanks Danny

Great location, the sun was shining, great food, and the service was brilliant. Danny was a really attentive and knowledgeable waiter. He recommended the Seabass for me, and it was amazing.

Fabulous food! Was a pleasure to find such a quality restaurant right on the beachfront. Great value for money. Will make this our regular place to eat when in Brighton. Steak looked awesome. Will order it next time we there. Had sea food and it was fresh and tasty. Staff are attentive. You can see chefs at work and there is a room where you can see them making dough. Definitely recommend.

Great. Obviously, worth it for the fish. I had a fantastic skate. Cocktails were also good. We were lucky to be sat upstairs at window seat that afforded a really great view. Lovely evening.

Great food and service .. although the food was good it was quite pricey and the alcohol was very pricey too! The cheapest glass of Prosecco was £10!! Ouch!! Not somewhere you can afford to go to regular but where isn’t expensive these days! Staff were friendly and venue is good.

I absolutely love this restaurant. The food and service is so good. Fab location, right by the beach, with a beautiful view of the sea. Really friendly staff and amazing cocktails.

The service of the restaurant is not good the staff talk's in bad slang, So I'm telling you this restaurant is not worth it please don't go in this restaurant 👎🙏

The staff was not at all welcoming plus we ordered food and they asked us to move in 30 minutes and make space for other people who can order more food also they were racist to us. We overheard the staff talking to each other about us and they have zero sense of customer service. This place was disgusting with disgusting staff and even worse service.

My recent experience at DUE SOUTH left me utterly appalled and deeply disappointed. I cannot stress enough how disheartened I am by the blatant racism and discriminatory behavior displayed by the staff. It is my duty to warn others about this appalling establishment, so that they may avoid such a distressing encounter. From the moment my party and I stepped foot into the restaurant, we were met with unwelcoming glares and cold attitudes. It became abundantly clear that our presence was unwelcome solely because of our racial background. Despite the fact that we were paying customers, we were treated with disdain and disrespect throughout our entire visit. To make matters worse, the restaurant staff shamelessly forced us to leave our table within an unreasonably short span of time. The pretext given was that another group supposedly wanted our table and potentially had the potential to spend more money than us. It was disheartening to see that our value as customers was reduced to a mere monetary calculation, while disregarding our rights and dignity.

Very kind staff and extraordinary service. The food was excellent. Absolutely nothing to complain about, everything was perfect. I would definitely recommend this restaurant!

Update 6/2023: the menu continues to get better and better. Cocktails list is great; the fish is fantastic, really nice waiter too. This is my favourite restaurant in Brighton. -- Fantastic meal; nice space and in a great location. The food is excellent - fresh fish cooked very well, and some really interesting dishes. The cocktail menu also has some real gems on it. Ideal for a date or a business dinner with someone you want to impress.

Food and service was excellent although they were a bit slow with bringing drinks. Food was very good and very taste. Big menu deserts were lacking. Would go again. We sat right at the back and it is too hot up there and with the air con on was too cold

Food was amazing as was service - waitresses were so lovely and when we asked for a sauce with our main the chef made us a custom unreal sauce to go with our fish - great service !!

It was a truly pleasant experience as a tourist and it was my first time I really enjoyed the atmosphere people are so nice and positive vibes are all over the place. Service is impeccable 100% very hygienic and clean and they are very very nice simple light people. Food is delicious and has so many varieties for vegans vegetarians and those who eat different kind of meals it truly has big big variety of what you can eat and drink it friendly for adults and children both and has a great view I would highly recommend this place if you go there thank you all so much

Really great fresh fish from the catch of the day!

The restaurant has the most wonderful location when the weather is good and we had an outstanding meal with a real variety of different dishes but what made it even better was the wonderful service from Laura . As ever it’s the service that makes the difference and so often it’s lacking but not here so if you want good food, great service and lovely sea views this is the place to go to

Attentive service, excellent food and a welcoming atmosphere, this restaurant got it all. The food is top quality and the execution of the dish is impeccable, the waiters are very knowledgeable of the menu and the various specials of the day. Never found it difficult to get someone's attention and the speed of service was impressive. Definitely the place to go if you're in Brighton by the sea!

Really special food and service

Had the most incredible lunch experience at due south a couple weeks ago. The staff was extremely welcoming, friendly and catered to our every need, the food was exceptional and the wine pairings really added to the experience, will definitely be returning for those gorgeous oysters. All in all would highly recommend!!

Having visited this restaurant years ago, we were confident it would be good. We ordered an extremely expensive fish of the day - a very large sea bass with potatoes and broccoli. The fish arrived un-filleted and with no serving cutlery, as neither did the vegetables. I asked for the fish to be filleted. The waitress said she'd ask, then came back and said it couldn't be filleted at the table as it had all sorts of bones. I asked for it to be filleted in the kitchen. It came back, intact with head and tail, masses of bones and still no serving spoons. I asked for something to serve it with, she came back with a desert spoon apologising there was nothing else. I hadn't seen my friend for a long while, she had been unwell, and as she didn't complain, I kept quiet as I didn't want to ruin our meal. We ate the fish, it was flabby and mushy, smothered in an unappetising and inappropriate pesto sauce but just about edible as it wasn't off. The waitress and other people asked how it was, I said nothing, but my friend nodded that it was ok. I had decided to complain directly after the event in order not to ruin our evening together. The fish cost £60 without anything else. It was not only badly cooked, it was appallingly badly served. After writing a complaint email and getting no response after over a week, I wrote again, phoned several times and eventually got a response. I spoke to the manager - Victoria - who made no effort to apologise or understand my feelings. She defended her position, queried again and again how a complaint had not been made at the time, and finished by saying she would have to speak to her 'team' as she didn't know how anything could be done about my complaint. There is clearly not going to be any recompense for this upsetting event, for my time spent in writing twice and phoning several times, nor is there an apology of any kind for a meal which was clearly substandard and cost an exorbitant amount, just a defence of the restaurant. I was treated like someone who had no idea of what a fish should be like. In fact my father was the editor of the Egon Ronay guides, which gave me vast experience in eating in restaurants, and subsequently as an adult in Italy where I lived for over 30 years. This was the most distressful conversation I have had following a complaint, the only time I have felt it necessary to complain about a meal, in all of my almost 80 years.

Had an amazing lunch at due South today. Was excited to check this place out as had heard lots of good things abou this place. Enjoyed a nice glass of sparkling English wine on the terrace. The food really is the best in brighton at the moment. I Enjoyed the cod dish with a delicious wild garlic source. The starters were very tasty. I also tried my partners tuna tartare which tasted very light and fresh. Would definitely recommend if you enjoy fine dining with beautiful views!

Attended for a family birthday lunch, 8 adults looking forward to sampling some of the dishes advertised on their instagram page as a “new lunch menu available Sunday to Friday”, to find out they had pulled it for the day and replaced with a limited (overpriced) menu. The Sea Bass had run out, which left limited options, for a fish restaurant on a busy weekend this surprised us all. We were the only table inside for the majority of our visit but service was painfully slow as the staff were focussing their attention towards the outside diners . We ordered Oysters and a selection of starters which were tasty but then had to wait a further hour for our mains to arrive. 3 people had the cod, 1 had pork and 4 others shared 2 Côte de boeuf plates. All were very nice bar the beef, both ordered as medium rare with one arriving on the edge of medium and the other Well done. The beef was also supposed to come with potato gratin, a random bowl of chips arrived on the table which no one had ordered and when asked about the gratin one of the waitresses said it was underneath the slices of beef (it wasn’t) another waitress then came over to say they had also ran out of the gratin so the chefs replaced with chips. Not sure which cookery school they went to where a single bowl of chips are an acceptable substitute for gratin! A second bowl of chips then also arrived as some form of apology but everyone had pretty much finished their meals. A manager then came over to apologise for the cremated beef and chips and offered 50% (£30) off one of the steaks. The final bill arrived and the £225 deposit paid hadn’t been removed which had to be pointed out, another example of their poor attention to detail. As we had already been in there close to 3 hours there was no point in causing a fuss as we just wanted to get out and enjoy the final minutes of the sun. Overall it was an average experience and wouldn’t recommend but I hope this review prompts some further training of the waiting staff and chefs to prevent the restaurant damaging itself even more.

The food was excellent Maybe the best restaurant in Brighton (and I eat at the ones that are considered the best ones) I wasn’t impress with the service: seemed to pressure to order quickly and finish the meal (there were empty table inside) Waitress had a formal attitude, but not genuinely friendly Few strange small things For instance In the reservation under special occasion I stated my wife birthday A couple near our table were celebrating and got a complementary small desert we didn’t I feel like second grade client .. We were visiting Brighton with friends and booked to have a meal here on a Tuesday afternoon. We were very excited about the prospect of looking out to sea whilst eating some excellent food. When we arrived we found that there was one other party...

Very surprised how poor the food was and service from inexperienced staff. It used to be so good but has become an overpriced average. Will not return.

What a breath of fresh air this restaurant is! I want to thank the friendly gentleman at the riddle&finns front desk for recommending this restaurant to us on a busy holiday Friday where we didn't need a reservation. I am extremely grateful for the kind reminder from the waiter that we could only sit outside, which made my family and one-year-old child wait in the cold wind for half an hour before finally getting to eat six not-so-fresh oysters and then being moved indoors. Following that, we waited for over an hour to be served monkfish that was only cooked on the outside. The kind-hearted waiter tried to convince me that this is how the fish is supposed to be, by asking the chef about it. They suggested that all raw fish is actually bones🙄. I sincerely hope that the 12.5% service charge will help this restaurant.

Incredibly over priced for tiny portions of fine dining cuisine served on garden furniture. £14 for a tiny, single ravioli that was delicious but worth less than half the price. My mother had mussels that were beautiful and fresh but completely uncleaned, which soured the sauce they were served in. Disappointing 😞.

Memorable starters, excellent fish with wonderful seasoning and accompaniments, and desserts to warm the heart. Dan Mertl is a chef to watch!

Well. Dropped in for a light bite at lunch, booked in for the evening. Straight forward menus. Great staff, both afternoon & evening. Fielded questions with a smile and were attentive, friendly but at the same time knew exactly when to leave us to it....

Why advertise that you can suffle songs but not sing-along? It’s 11 pm, people here are aware most people are substituting this as a night out during COVID. Okay drinks, likelihood of getting your song played is slim. Can only choose max 3 songs and they’re all from a pre prepared playlist.

A nice and clean place. Very cheap and cheerful food. I ordered a quarter grilled chicken and fries and the chicken was not dry.

Living just found the corner from this deli, I have used it sometimes for a lunchtime sandwich and was amazed to read the reviews here. Finally got an evening table due to a cancellation. The candlelit interior is an amazing transformation from the daytime deli I'm used to. The host was charming and makes a real effort to make people welcome. Its the first restaurant I've ever been where every guest is welcomed by name. The setting and the host are just right for a romantic meal - which wasn't really what I was there for (I was with a friend). The food was nothing special, competently done traditional Italian food. I noticed every other table appeared to be a couple and this restaurant is ideal for that special occasion. We had to get away promptly but this place is really for enjoying that long leisurely meal with your partner.

Had an amazing dinner here on Saturday. Food and service were outstanding. I managed to spill my steak sauce. All over my waistcoat. The maitre'd returned it spotless. I even got 5 minutes with the chefs. They shared the miso butter recipe. Just loved this place. I hope you do too.

It was ok but the food took ages. We waited for 40 minutes before the starter came (bread, scallops and mussels). The mussels had a few very underdone ones (close to raw). We had a whole turbot which was not bad, just nothing very creative about the seasoning or way it’s cooked or presentation considering it was 60£. Not sure if they were short handed since it is the 29th, maybe some staff were off for the holidays. Not horrible but I wish we went somewhere else. A bit underwhelming…

I had a Xmas do there and it was amazing. From outside it looks understated like you wouldn't guess that inside is restaurant serving top quality food and polite, welcoming staff. Please, do go inside. You won't regret it.

Had a lovely dinner at Due South. Front of House manager David was very attentive and we opted for the Fish of the day which was whole Grilled Brill on the bone with potatoes with pepper and tomato sauce and Broccoli that was char grilled....

Lovely ! We have been here twice recently, for the Sunday lunch and the Thursday Set Menu. Both really tasty. The Sunday lunch comes with two types of meet, amazing truffle cauli cheese and delicious gravy. We had beef and lamb, the pulled lamb was amazing. The set menu was also great, a beautiful selection of seasonal produce. You can tell the chef cares about all things food!

The wild mushrooms with blue cheese and cauliflower purée and Butternut squash, pesto and black rice were amazing. We had a lovely table and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful. Thank you! Def will be coming back as soon as we can.

The fish and the service were excellent. We had the turbot and a sea bass, both cooked well and extremely fresh. Our waitress was chatty, efficient and only added to the meal. However, everything else was mediocre. The bread starters were poor. The pita type bread was doughy and the aubergine and feta topping left a lot to be desired. The starters were good but very small and the sides for the mains reasonable at best. For the price one is paying, there are better restaurants/fish restaurants in Brighton. Equally, if you do go, just get the fish.

Went for a roast on Sunday! The lamb was delicious, potatoes super crispy and cauliflower cheese to die for!! Definitely be back and choosing over any pub roast this winter :)

We went for Sunday roast. It was really really really good. The meat (we had beef and lamb) was high quality, plentiful and perfectly cooked. Every element was done with care and was delicious. Best roast for many years. Highly recommend !

Went for a roast on Sunday and I can’t for the life of me see what the fuss is about this place. The Marjory of the lamb served was fat - and the bits that weren’t were raw and inedible. Beyond that the yorkshires were black , and the vegetables were bland and just warm. For £19 I really expected better! Service was good, and a discount was applied to my bill ((7.10) - still wish I hadn’t been if I am honest.

We did an exclusive hire of Due South for one of our work events last night and the evening could have not gone any better. The team there is one of the most efficient we have ever come across at a venue; from enquiry stage to the event delivery everything was handled so seamlessly. As the hosts of the event, on the night, we were able to relax and also enjoy the evening, as we could see that everything was taking care of. Kudos to the Chefs too - the food was divine and so were the local wines we paired it with. Thank you again Naomi, David and the rest of the team! 10/10!

We came for dinner with the Octoberbest menu, the atmosphere was lovely, the staff were friendly and attentive. The menu was enjoyable, however I found that the dishes were hit or miss. We loved the wild mushroom bread, the kale salad with goats cheese, apple and a hazelnut dressing, and the venison - these were the highlight of our dinner. Nevertheless, it was a very good experience, and the menu had a lot variety. I’d recommend to give it a try.

I would go here from London for the lobster crumpets alone. My husband's Dover sole was still slightly pink in the middle - we asked for it to be grilled a bit more - they gave him a completely new one and halved the price....

Firstly, great staff. Whole Dover sole as a special if the day £36. They are ‘experimenting’ with dry aging the Dover sole. Which is a terrible experiment. The flesh develops a leathery, sole biltong surface layer which seems to prevent even cooking. The normal succulent...

Unbelievable, I'm still reeling from the flavour of the simple butterflied mackerel. It was so good I almost cried, I didn't want it to end. It was possibly the best fish I have ever had, there are no more words, sorry

Expensive and a little pretentious for my taste. Not good for kids with very limited menu. However, friendly staff and a lovely setting and the food is nice, just not my thing.

Wonderful staff Rather steep prices

First time at due south, service was amazing they couldn’t do enough for you. Delicious food but my partner had the curry which came with a little naan bread so he left still hungry unfortunately as the curry on its own wasn’t enough as a “larger plate”.

Great small lunch. Didn’t want too much to eat, so after advice from our lovely waitress we chose a fabulous grilled octopus with tiny pasta and a anchovy flatbread. Would love to go back. The oysters looked amazing xx

Brilliant restaurant. Great location. Friendly, welcoming and knowledgable staff. Delicious food (we had oysters followed by moules mariniere and unleavened bread) accompanied by decent Pinot Grigio and followed with a sharing platter of desserts to die for. 100% recommend this place.
