What an amazing setting! The castle is well worth a visit with lovely staff who spent lots of time talking to us about clan heritage. The sea room had stunning views across the islands and I could have enjoyed that view for hours. Outside, the paths offered some great walks and views of the castle dominating the skyline.

Duart Castle is a must-see for fans of history, architecture, and wildlife. The historical presentations and family collection are thoughtfully curated. My husband and I renewed our wedding vows here: the two ladies in charge of visitors also helped with our ceremony and were a pure delight beginning to end. What drew us to this location was not just it's rich history but how devoted the Clan Maclean has been in lovingly restoring and preserving their ancestral home. Not many 12th century castles achieve such a triumphant return from ruin. Guests should remember this castle is an actual residence; on-going maintenance is a given and shouldn't be complained about! The website makes it easy to buy admission tickets to visit inside the castle (which are quite inexpensive) and hours are clearly stated. Grounds are wonderful for hiking, bird, and sea watching. We'll be back!

Castle itself is nice to look at and the grounds are good for a wander. Driving up it said the castle was closed but when we arrived the grounds are open and other people were walking around. The castle door was also open with no signage not to enter or saying it was closed and there were again other people going in and out so we thought it would be fine, we were wrong. We were asked to leave after getting most of the way round, which we did promptly and quietly, but the staff were quite snippy and rude unfortunately, insinuating that we didn’t read signs despite there being none. This obviously let the visit down and highlights the need for proper signage and visitor information/engagement.

One of the must see places on the isle of Mull. The castle is lived in by the 28th chairman of the clan MacLean. If traveling by car I would make it your first stop when you get off of the ferry.

Visited Duart castle on the 17th September due to a change of plans and it did not disappoint. The grounds and the castle look amazing. The history and way the castle is set up to tell its story is very good. I even spoke to Sir Lachlan MacLean who has ample time for talking to and welcoming visitors. Yes there is scaffolding as the restoration is ongoing but that just adds to the castle's story.

What an incredible place to visit! The history of the castle along with the renovations has made this a place that has to be visited. A polite and delightful lady took our entry fee and told us a bit about the castle. We spent hours in the castle and was lucky enough to meet and chat briefly with the owner and custodian, Sir Lachlan Maclean the 28th chief of the Clan Maclean. Great views from the roof of the castle, giving you an opportunity for some stunning photos. The small souvenir shop and cafe are staffed by friendly warm and polite people. For lunch we had the chef's Cullen Skink and Blackberry Cream cake, which were delicious. The prices are compatible and the cafe has plenty of seating. Well worth a visit. A memorable experience. Look out for the highland cows in the field along the road leading to the castle.

I asked for a scone and with a blank expression on her face I repeated my self .I said scon /scone what ever you want to call it. I pointed in the end. I'm in the market for a castle of my own. This one looks lovely and before it appears on Rightmove I thought I'd pay the very reasonable £10 entry fee and have a cheeky look around. Views are incredible, staff were all very friendly and the information / history / artefacts that are there to see are highly engaging. My budget is unlikely to stretch as far as the 28th Chiefs (Sir Lachlan MacLean), so, as much as I'd love a rock out to sea to put people and leave them some time to think about themselves and how they could do better, or perhaps a dungeon of my own, I'll just happily say that the visit was well worth it.

Stopped here to pass some time before our evening crossing back to the mainland and found that we had stumbled upon a fascinating castle with lots to learn and enjoy - from the great value castle entry to the impressive situation above the sea and lovely café serving homemade food. Inside the castle there is something for everyone - those that read all the information, those that like to “see” the artefacts and those that just want to explore the building oozing with - on occasion - slightly morbid history and observe the amazing (and ongoing) restoration work. Outside the castle, we walked the grounds down to the rocky beach (don’t upset your spouse or you may find yourself left on lady’s rock to perish) and the millennium wood for a shady stroll among the replanted woodland. Highly recommend.

Beware, because there is no longer a shuttle from the port to the castle: you depend 100% on the ferry services of CalMac which are untrustworthy. In my particular case I used their services twice while in my holidays and both times I suffered incidents, blowing my whole day in one occassion, but the impact could have been much worse. My recommendation: visit other places like the gardens, MacDonald's castle or even Inveraray rather than going to Duart.

We loved the visit. The story of the clan is told both from a personal point of view (I lived to see the family photos) and from historical point of view, with very interesting stories. It is also really well done: enough info that you take away something, not too much that you want to skip the reading. We also want to thank personally the very kind person who runs the gift store: we had only one afternoon left on the Isle and asked her recommandation on what to do. We had a very soecial afternoon thank to her. If anybody from the castle reads the review, please give her our deepest appreciation.

After appalling service at Duck Bay we went here for lunch. Warmly welcomed. High chair for my grandson and the lovely waitress brought a bowl of water for the dog. Food was amazing and we were able to eat it indoors without being rained on because we had the dog (as happened at Duck Bay)! She also brought a treat for the dog. Seriously over rated & expensive. Stopped for a quick breakfast. Service was so slow that we'd finished a pot of tea by the time the food arrived. Ordered toast, avocado and poached eggs. Toast was cold, eggs cold and avocado had some sort of green sludge mixed through it with toasted oats and seeds on top. Not what was ordered. Not what was on the menu and I had specifically said I wanted something plain. Don't bother - it's not worth it!!
