D'ton in Darlington

I visited last week. The shop had good reviews and was fairly close to where I was staying. I bought haddock and chips. The main problem was a soggy, greasy batter. This had soaked through to the meat of the fish so it no longer retained its beautiful whiteness. The chips were mostly small and hard. One of the worst fish suppers I've ever had. I'm from the North East of Scotland and am used to excellently cooked fish and chips.

This shop is amazing, 10/10 for food - service -friendliness . As a family this is the place we go all the time and Friday is Fishy Friend in our house hold and D’TON is the place for us Thank you for for all you service ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Stars

Went in yesterday lunchtime, never been here before, will never be going again and I will certainly never recommend them to anyone . I found the own and his wife to be very rude and not nice people at all. Purchased fish and chips, the Lady owner who served me, threw them over the counter to me. she wrapped my food in ONE sheet of paper by the time I got to work with them the paper was soaked in grease from the fish ! and they were nearly cold. When I opened them the chips were dark brown, dry and hard and appeared to have been cooked and warmed up, they were completely inedible and had to be thrown in the bin. The fish was very greasy which is why the paper was soaked in grease. This also went into the bin. When I finished work later that day I telephoned the shop to complain and the Lady owner immediately started being very rude and would not let me speak or explain, I tried to speak and she just continued to talk over the top of me. She then put her husband on the phone who then did the same as his wife and would not let me speak or explain what had happened. I told them could I speak and again he spoke constantly over the top of me, I eventually told him I wanted my money back and was told to go into the shop the next day. I have been back to the shop today and the Lady owner immediately starting talking at me like she had on the phone and would not allow me to talk, she then got a mobile phone out and starting thrusting that over the counter at me showing me photos of fish and chips and told me I should have taken a photo of the fish and chips from the day before and showed them. I said I was at work and they had gone into the bin as they were disgusting and I could not eat them. This lady continuing having a go at and I could not speak, her husband the other owner then joined his wife and neither of them would listen to what I was trying to explain and were really not nice at all . The man told me he would not refund my as arranged the day before and continued to talk and I was not allowed to speak. I walked out of the shop as this point as I was upset and was not prepared to be verbally attacked like this. Avoid this place as the quality of the food is disgusting and if you try and make a complaint expect to be met by the attitude I was , the way I was spoken to on the phone and in person was dreadful by the owner and his wife.

Ignore the “doubters” They serve great food with a smile . as a good Friday tradition we always go to this chippy from the last 10 years, always serving excellent quality fish and chips, even most of the time when they’re busy they do their best. Always worth the wait & i recommend this chippy to everyone. the food was so yummy yesterday as usual so i have taken a picture the same time we opened the food and i requested them to put it in the trays, happily did it.

If you want excellent fish and chips - try here...... We like to think we know a good fish & chips and have tried them everywhere from Cornwall to Scotland. Everybody raves about Whitby which are among the best but D'ton Fish & Chips are equal if not better to us. How lucky are we! Perfect white fish every time (not grey) - fresh 'proper' chips. Sublime!! All our visitors ask if they can have fish and chips from 'your chippy'. Lovely couple that run it - always pleasant with a smile.

I went there with my family to try fish and chip and we were absolutely amazed how good the food was there. The serves there was excellent.

Went on good Friday. Staff were friendly as always. Good was absolutely spot on. The queue was round the block but that's to be expected for one of the best chippies in the town and clearly the owner cares about his staff and his customers which is why the queue was so big. All in all a great place with top quality fish and chips

My partner and I stumbled upon this bright unassuming Take away near to Darlington train station, we ordered small fish and chips and a side order . While the gentleman cooked our order fresh he proceeded to tell us of some interesting places to see while we were in town,then we were given our order...OMG it was definitely the best fish and chips I've ever had, we ate them standing outside and the lady took the empty wrappers off us to discard them for us, all in all a lovely couple with an amazing restaurant. Highly recommended.

The Indian cannot do fish and chips as good as the English, this fish and chip shop is crap. The fish is all batter, the chips were stale tasting with no taste whatsoever to both the fish and chips. Really awful.

What a fabulous fish and chip shop, never failed to impress, good portions for a good price, including children size portions. The only thing for people visiting to be aware of is you can only pay by cash there is no card payment facility. There are cash machine in the station or at down the road at Asda.

Nice friendly staff, had the fish and a cheese pattie, which were both very tasty and accompanied by a generous portion of chips

I recently moved to the area and am on the lookout for the best Chip shop within a 10-mile radius. I have already tried Yarm Road Fish & Chips and found it to be nothing more than ordinary, so I thought I'd take the 9-mile journey to this place. I shouldn't really have bothered. First impressions were how clean and tidy the shop looks. I went into the empty shop just after 7 pm on a Wednesday in January and was immediately greeted in a very friendly manner by the gentleman behind the counter. A sign on the wall says that all fish is cooked to order, I don't know whether chips are usually done in this manner, or whether it just happened to me because they were so quiet? I didn't wait too long and was then served a fairly large portion of chips (£1.85) and haddock (£5.50). I took them outside to eat in my car. Honestly, the chips were tasteless. I think this is a case of both poor choices of oil and the quality of potato. The fish wasn't bad (certainly not greasy like previous reviews mention) but overall, this was just another very ordinary meal, with nothing that would bring me back again.

Fish and chips were lovely. Couldn’t fault the staff or service provided the shop was also nice and clean the food was fresh. The food was hot and the chips were perfect, there was no marks on the chips so they take time to prepare which shows a good service

Been there so many times, I had the good fortune of visiting here last night! The regular cod, cod pieces, scampi, large sausages and chips were all cooked to perfection. I work all over the Uk so know a great chippy and this is one of them ! Wonderful place lovely staff. Keep it up

Got fish and chips twice from here tonight got home only to unwrap them and find them swimming in grease so bad could not even eat any of it 15 pound wasted will never go back Horrendous only place to put them BIN

you will not be cheated out of your hard earned cash as the portions are amazing. food is wrapped up to perfection to keep your food warm, the staff are lovely. the lady is always smiling behind the counter as the man just keeps cooking those lovely fish and chips. splash of gravy is amazing. well done to this place,

I absolutely love dton. Fish and chips is my favourite meal and I make sure it's a weekly occurrence at least.

We were in a rush on Friday evening and wanted some quick food. This fish and chip shop is one of the best I have ever been to. The oil the chips are cooked in gives them fantastic flavour and the portions were the perfect size. The fish as well was just as tasty; easily coming apart in the mouth. I would 100% visit again if i could.

It is a tradition to visit them to get that lovely food. Always fresh fish and great chips. Staff are so friendly. I can highly recommend it

Called in on a Saturday evening after trying a different chippy but not being able to get through, I knew this chippy wouldn't disappoint.

My favourite chippy in the town by miles. Fish chips and curry is spot on, fish is massive, could easily feed 2 people. Friendly staff as always Clean and tidy inside. Never any complaints. Will call again on good Friday

I have tried many chip shops in the town and this one by far is the best. Price wise it's slightly more than other chippys in the town but you wouldn't be disappointed. Portions are very good, the large fish is huge. Curry sauce spot on. Pleasant staff, will keep coming back

Have been buying from here since they opened. Delicious, fresh and cooked to order. Dont mind waiting, staff extremely helpful and polite. Portions are huge! Usually get large fish and chips and that is plenty for 2 of us! Never go anywhere else. 10 / 10

We have been coming to this amazing chippy for years now and it really never disappoints. We are ‘regulars’ and the reason we keep coming back is the lovely service and the superb food. We normally order pattie and chips twice with a large peas and large curry. The quality of the fresh food is great and the portion sizes are huge. The people here are so friendly and we would never go anywhere else. Top notch. Best chippy I have ever been to. Thank you!!

As the title says I don't mind travelling across town as the quality of the fish and chips are top notch. I went there for lunch today for large fish and chips, mushy peas and curry which My Wife and I shared. The portion was that big that I'm actually sat here writing this review having what We had leftover for tea. Based on My experiences of D'ton, I can heartily recommend here!!

This is a nice place to eat.. as i love fish and chips this place was great with grest customer service and really nice good..fish was cooked really nice as it should be.. myself and my family were very pleased with the service we received and very happy with the quality of food..i would recomend this to anyone visiting the area..

Nice food, excellent fish but the lady serving can be very curt. Asked for an item to be wrapped separately and you would have thought the extra sheet of paper was going to make the business go bust they way she behaved. Shame really because the food is very good. Need some customer service training.

Delicioso pescado fresco y patatas fritas con porciones enormes! A menudo hay que hacer cola en la puerta es tan bueno! Tiempo de espera no es muy larga, pero siempre vale la pena! Si vas antes que a menudo regalan un regalo, como un pastel de pescado o algo que puede ser sobrantes al final del día! Nunca quejarse de eso! Puede hacer un pedido teléfono demasiado, lo cual es muy útil si quieres ser perezoso o si pides algo como haggis que puede tomar un tiempo. El haggis y salchichas en masa junto con el pescado y las patatas fritas nunca defrauda! El personal es servicial. Sin duda el mejor!

Nos dan el pescado y patatas fritas desde aquí para nuestro almuerzo en el trabajo alrededor de una vez al mes. Cocinan el pescado a la orden y posteriormente es fresco, caliente, fresco y sabroso.

I regularly visit this Chippy and I can honestly say it has never let me down. The service is great and the quality of the food is excellent. Huge portions and delicious food. Wouldn't go anywhere else, even though I pass 3/4 other closer chip shops. That says it all!!

Everytime I visit Darlo I like to have fish and chips at least once. This place does the most amazing VFM fish and chips in town. If you want to try their standard fish then make sure you are hungry; the portions are huge and what's more delicious!!! A must try if you are in Darlington :-)

Situated close to the town centre, but still close to a large residential area, D'ton is easy to find and easily my go-to and favourite fish and chips shop in Darlington!First of all, the portion size is excellent for what you pay for. The fish always comes with a crispy batter that compliments the taste of the fish itself, and that alongside the perfect chips that they serve is incredible. The service is very fast, with friendly staff that are easily approachable and ready to take your order. They clearly know what they're doing!I can easily recommend D'ton to anyone as it easily outmatches the other fish and chips places in the local area.

Certainly not the best chippy in Darlington!! This place is decidedly average. I only tried it as my favourite Park Lane chippy was closed, as it was a Tuesday. I should have waited a day, as the fish here was dry, the batter thin and falling off the fish and the chips were average.Would I bother returning? Nope! Park Lane is simply in another league, and if they are closed, I won't bother going elsewhere.

I have been coming here after work for fish and chips every weekFor a good few years now. I come and get a large fish and chips For myself and my elderly parents. I travel over from Branksome.The portions are huge, freshly cooked, with lovely light batter.One large portion feeds three of us comfortably. Present price £7-00.My mum who is 83 says they are the best fish she has had for years.People may go on about Haugton and the one in cockerton village but trust me they don't have a patch on this place, I've been to both.I won't be arguing with her, for value it's unbeatable. Give it a try and make Sure you have a good appetite.

Now I know why the worlds fish stocks are running low. D'ton fish shop is cooking them all! The portions are huge! The fish is well cooked and the batter beautiful and crispy. The chips are spot on as well. Been here twice and it was very busy both times. It's a very popular place, I think it's one if not the best chippy in Darlo. Well worth the trek across town for us. There's also some food for veggies as well.

Very good chin shop that's always full of customers and regularly taunts me with its delicious smell when I walk past it on my way to work. The fish and chips are spot on and the portion sizes are generous.

For 8 pounds I got 2 small fish and chips 2 large curry sauce and a burger . The portions were not small . We could not finish the meal . And the quality and taste are by far the best in town .

Last week I visited for fish and chips , I order fish bites and chips they were massive than any fish shops I'v been . Not only was the fish big the taste was amazing ! If you ever go to Darlington you better visit D'ton fish bar . When I come to Darlington again I will go to D'ton !

Just visited shop on Friday the 26 September the fish and chips were out of this world plus fish patties also excellent really good value for money and great service will be going back very very soon

First time I've visited Darlington. Well worth the visit. Lots of places to eat and drink. The parking prices put York to shame!! The brick sculpture (train) is a little out of the way but worth going to see.

Just finished eating a really good fish & chips tea. The fish was absolutely lovely, large white and firm flakes with a more than average portion of perfectly cooked chips.The owner was just closing the shutter down when my son and I arrived, but he had the courtesy to allow us to place our order - which I felt was good of him to do so and he cooked the fish fresh!!Not only that, when the fish was getting wrapped he even threw in a couple of battered sausages - free of charge. This has to be the best value fish and chip shop on the town and I should know as I have tried most of them.It really deserves more recognition as the standard has been excellent ever since it opened. The whale of the fish served is well worth the money alone, I'm sure there are cheaper fish and chip shops on the town - but I would really recommend trying this one, as I don't believe you will find a better standard anywhere else. Once you see the amount given and taste the quality you will know what I mean!!
