Great atmospheric diner...very retro and great coffee. Good choice of ice cream and attentive staff...loved the old fashioned style.

My friend and I went here for 'lunch today. We both had the full breakfast which is served all day. It was delicious. Bacon, 2 sausages fried egg, mushrooms, tattie scone and 2 slices of toast . I couldn't manage the toast . The staff were lovely and the service great . The place was spotless . We also had tea and a hot chocolate . The hot chocolate was lovely . We are just in the area for a couple of days but we will definitely be going back to this café . Photo shows how much I enjoyed my lunch.

I went here yesterday, Thursday the 29th, with a friend for some lunch and coffees. We were told by the young guy to take a seat and someone would be over with menus. We were then ignored for 5-10 minutes. Even a fellow customer letting them know we hadn’t been served didn’t dislodge one of the four members of staff behind the counter to come and give us menus. We ended up leaving and going to Thomas Tosh instead.

Passing thru Thornhill, stopped for a bite. It's a chip shop nothing more so didn't expect the best. The menu offered gammon steak, although I did say to my wife, this doesn't look like a gammon steak kinda place. Anyhow, placed the order of gammon steak, chips and beans, and just a plate of chips for my wife. A coke and a mug of tea as well. As expected was told no gammon steak available, so changed the order to sausage beans and chips. When the order came, it was two plates of chips and beans!!!! Sent it back and this created complete confusion in the kitchen. We could hear every word of who's fault it was, as the inquest ensued, all seeming to fall on the young lad serving. It was NOT his fault. Eventually got our correct order. Finished the meal which was fine, then went to pay. The young lady on the till said there was no "ticket" for the table due to all thre confusion, so I had to itemise everything we had ordered. I know it's JUST a chip shop, but could be a lot better........

The food is great but the wait is simply unacceptable. Each time we come knowing it takes a long time for your order, but today was over an hour. This is the fourth time our has taken so long. I'm just not prepared to try again. Such a shame as it's my daughter's favourite cafe but the Bqa across the road is a far better place for lunch. Another person walked out, unable to wait any longer as his dog was in the car.

I’ve been coming to.this cafe for 30+ years,, detouring when I’m Scotland to visit relatives and for the past 10 years living nearby. It is a typical Italian/Scottish cafe I remember from my childhood and am still lucky to find on our travels. There have been changes in the last few years, but the food is excellent, their soup in the winter and fish and chips, my grandsons love their pizzas. Prices have risen and the staff are young, but on our way home tonight we asked to share a fish n chips as we couldn’t manage a full one each, and this was no problem for them, and it was as usual excellent!

Permit me to be throughly specific as well as objective. This cafe does not offer 'hospitality'! It does not offer quality food nor quality service! Upon entering the establishment, one can instantly pick up on the negative vibe. The staff manifest a tangible almost viseral projection of stress which is very unpalitable. The food is mediorche, and I am trying to offer some compliment in saying this. The drinks, i.e. a lattle coffee just was not a Latte! I am assuming it may have been processed without care nor concern for authenticity of its description. The tea was served in the least generous cup I have yet to encounter in a cafe; a thimble would have been more creative. Service was nonchalent, aloof, and projective, with sneering glances. Observing the counter staff was akin to watching slugs mate with unhappy unsociable dispositions. I came out wondering if some staff had, had a lobotomy. I would hazard a guess that one could have more enjoment in morgue. Value. I have experience of expensive establishments, serving fine beverages and food, and would not complain at such because the whole service is to a good standard. This establishment could do with an injection of humanity, training on how to present service and food at a quantiative and qualiative higher standard, especially for the exhorbitant prices they are charging. It is fair to state, that i shall refrain my custom from them, from here on in. Oh and before I end, the toilets did not appear to be at a hygenic level.

The most unfriendly cafe I have ever been to in Scotland. As a lone female I was ignored. I asked where to sit, asked for a menu, asked to place my order, whilst couples and groups were welcomed and served before me. It took over 20 minutes before I placed my order and 30 minutes before I got my jacket potato......Being a visitor I had no idea where else to eat, otherwise I would have left. The staff were frosty, abrupt and slow. Not the Scottish welcome I am used to. The food was basic and well cooked.

Fish and chips, haggis pizza, sausage and chips and chicken nuggets and chips for our 6 year old granddaughter. Decided to give this cafe another chance as our last visit wasn't great, but they excelled themselves this time with fresh battered haddock and chips. The food was piping hot when it arrived at the table and it tasted really good. The young lad that served us was very attentive and couldn't have been nicer. The only down side to our visit was my visit to the gents toilet, when I came to leave the toilet I couldn't help noticing the dirt on the door and the door handle was missing, I had to reach and grab the top of the door to open it. The owner needs to address this problem soon as it was very off putting.

This cafe is set in the Visitor area of Drumlanrig Castle. It is accessed either from the Visitor reception area or on exiting from the House tour. The setting is the old kitchen of the Castle and maintains the huge kitchen range and a fabulous display of copper and brass utensils that would have been used there. The cafe is not huge (about 0 tables) but was quiet even so on the day of our visit. The coffees and cakes that we had first were good, the cakes being cut from large traybakes which looked and tasted home-made. Later on returning for lunch we had the best Ploughman's Lunch that we have ever had, and which any ploughman of yesteryear would have felt himself very fortunate indeed to have received. Lovely ham, local cheese and a good quality gala pie were all included with pickle and salad. These types of meals usually come with a huge piece of bread, which is always too much for me, bu this one came with a neat crusty roll which was just right. The staff were very efficient and the whole place was spotlessly clean and well kept. Children were made welcome.

On a mission, we were too early for many good cafes on our route and we had passed others which we wouldn’t grace with our presence. ( greasy spoons and dirty toilet establishments, you know what I mean). I would rather go hungry than eat for the sake of eating in some places.Drumlanrig Cafe was new to us, it seems to be the only cafe in the hamlet of Thornhill and very popular it is. I suspect that if you want to catch up on all the local gossip, this is the place to come.We both had the normal breakfast which was good. Proper meaty sausages, the bacon was tasty and the cook poached my egg with no hesitation. It was a cool morning and I appreciated that the plates were nearly as hot as the food. Nothing kills a good breakfast than cold plates.I had a fruit tea as an option. The cafe sits on a corner of the crossroads in the middle of Thornhill. Very clean, well established ( a hint of the 1950’s ), and plenty of gossip if you are that way inclined. Friendly staff and warm on a cold day. We wouldn’t hesitate in coming back. Thank you.

Quite liked the traditonal Italian style / fish and chip / ice cream cafe feel - formica tables, etc., that others have described as dated. If you want a more contemporary vibe, there's a place round the corner I'll be checking out next time - or the bright Buccleuch Arms, which offers an early evening main course + drink for £7.50,which makes Drumlanrig Cafe seem overpriced at £7.50 just for fish and chips. The history engaged our interest and to;d it well. The grounds are really interesting and offered a variety of good walks as well as an adventure playground, which we didn't try but which seemed to please the target audience. The plants for sale were in good condition and seemed to be fairly priced. The food was good - a simple menu, but with good and fresh ingredients. The ham sandwiches were prepared while we waited. The service was prompt and friendly. We spent a very pleasant few hours in Drumlanrig. It's certain;y worth a visit if you are in the area, and probably worth a detour.

Am local, and ordered fish suppers. One medium sized piece of fish, hardly and grease laden chips. Woeful portion. Sixteen quid down the drain. Wont be back.

Friendly staff, nice enough premises, very 1960's. Limited choice for lunch. Ordered a ham and cheese and onion bread roll. Was truly awful. I was hungry, so I ate it. Horrible bread, awful cheese, and dreadful ham. They got the white onion correct. Would I go again. No way!,,,

Family outing and first time visit. We were not disappointed. Basic looking but excellent food. Some of the best pizzas around and lovely ice cream based desserts. We heard that the coffee was excellent.

Basic at the very best. The ham salad was ok, however the carrots and coleslaw had seen better days. My partner had the chicken and chips which was served with peas and raw tomatoes. The chicken appeared to have been microwaved to heat it. Service was fine, as the cafe was very quiet. If you are looking for something basic this is a good choice, however if you want something fancy - avoid!

Myself and my partner have been a few of times with our daughters. We have been for lunch and breakfast.I don't think there is anything bad I could say about the breakfast except I would like the option of black pudding/haggis. Never the less it is still an enjoyable breakfast and it's not really needed as it is filling and tasty. We have tried several cakes but they are sadly not to my liking, although my partner seems to consume them easily enough! The pizza is quite nice although the wording on the menu of having "tomato" on the pizza just means the sauce which is not really having tomato on the pizza.. But again it's nit picking! My children enjoyed their pizza and they are quite fussy about pizza. All in all it is a child friendly environment with nice staff and great food. However the attached "fish and chip shop" avoid anything that you don't see cooked in front of you and by that I mean they refry food and it ends up dry as old sticks. When I asked if they could cook me a totally fresh haggis they refused so I went to get a microwave meal from the co op as my children had one of their pizzas.

Lovely visit as weather was good. You need to book a escort visit however to get round castle. Went to cafe. Very nice setting but not big on menu. No soup or even scones left at 3pm so left to drive on a bit to get a hotel restaurant. Would highly recommend a picnic in good weather as grounds next to play park is stunning...

We had lunch in this cafe on our way to the castle. We had a really simple meal - sausage and chips and a toastie and we got exactly what we expected. Nothing special but tasty and fine. The service was a little disorganized and done mostly by a very young staff, but again, kind of what one would expect. If your expectations are grand you will be disappointed, but if realistic it is fine.

Today we visited and as it was a Sunday i decided on a chicken dinner, big mistake.Where do i start?Chicken was very dry and not hot, roast potatoes were small and hard, carrots were raw, parsnips were rock hard and had a bitter taste.Mash was tasteless and cauliflower cheese had a vague taste of cheese. The peas and yorkshire were ok but the latter was very small. My gravy was lukewarm so they kindly heated it till it was more like molten lava!I had to ask for napkins as apparently us customers cannot be trusted to use the dispensers!I wouldn't advise anyone to eat here, had an upset stomach all afternoon.

I have reviewed this Restaurant as part of the Galloway Arms Hotel, so this will hopefully clarify the earlier reviews. We have been on a number of occasions since the last review and we have not been disappointed with the food at the Nine Mile Bar & Bistro within The Galloway Arms Hotel. On this visit we chose two times Two Course Specials priced at £14.50 each. The Starters were battered Chicken Goujons, which was quite a large portion and Tempura coated Prawns. Both dishes were very good and the Chicken alone would have been enough for my Wife as a main course. (Small Eater). My Wife had the Beef Stroganoff and I had the Salmon in Dill sauce for the main courses. Normally, we tend to have just the main courses and therefore we had to take home the chips, which were provided along with the Stroganoff half & half. A pint of Moretti is £3.50 and a large Chardonnay is £5.00 and the total bill without tip came to £37.50. The surroundings in the Hotel's main bar is simple, but cozy. A 10 minute drive from Dumfries gets you to this Hotel and I think that it is worth this very small effort.More

Food was cold and disgusting. Steak burger was served in a roll which looked like something that would be served in a chippy. Waitress has clearly not been trained properly at all as her hospitality skills were dragging through the dirt.
