Great chips, service with a smile and speedy. Chips were hot and fresh and yummy Highly recommend if you want a lush takeaway from York Clean premises and welcoming and a fantastic menu with extensive choices

Had the battered sausage and chips takeaway... Freshly cooked sausage, and lovely chunky crispy chips! A bonus was being served by the charming Emily, who also graciously remembered me. 💯 per cent recommended!

Second visit this year, on both occasions the fish and chips have been excellent, the fish was so tasty. My first visit was with my granddaughter and the second with my husband, they both enjoyed their meals as much as I did, my husband doesn’t give praise much but he did after this meal. Lovely friendly staff and a great price too. Will definitely return on my next visit to York

Decent service, comfortable atmosphere, just average food. In a town with so many great restaurants, I’d skip this one.

I really love the fish, chips and mushy peas here, but I wouldn't want to visit too often as it is rather expensive, even for York.

we arrived one wet and windy saturday and were promptly shot to a table but it was cold my wife had to put her coat back on the waitress saw what was going on and put the overhead heater on a lady on the next table also put her coat back on , the food arrived reasonably quickly but my wife who is diabetic feels the cold , too little to late with the heater so we soon left not enjoying the food . we found a small cafe just a few doors down which was warm . we have eaten several times at drakes and enjoyed it but this time we didn't come on drakes I know electric is expensive but at least have a warm place to eat

I think this was probably the best fish and chips I've ever had (and I come from very near the sea in Devon so I'm not easily pleased!) I almost didn't order the fish, because they only seem to do haddock, and I usually far prefer cod, but am I glad I did! It was wonderfully fresh and flavoursome; the batter was light, crisp and tasty, and the chips were great as well. The service was fabulous. I got takeaway, and ate it sitting in the evening sun outside the Minster: couldn't ask for more!

Lovely fish and chips also gluten free for person with ceilac disease, also husband in wheelchair, they made sure that there space for the chair, also brough ramps for the steps and very kindly took the wheelchair in and out of the shops for us, Excellent service and food, can't thank the lovely friendly and helpful staff emough, really made our day

We really fancied fish and chips so picked this restaurant. The staff were lovely and the food was tasty. We had haddock and chips. The batter was lovely and crispy and the chips were spot on! Not much more to say.

Decided to eat hear after walking past and smelling the fish and chips. We also saw that they fry in beef dripping which is how fish and chips were always cooked in years gone by. We called back at the end of the day and were shown to our table quickly by friendly staff. I'm.not going to lie I was a bit put off by the dated decor and the dim lighting. However,the food outshone this and we were so.glad we came. The chips were so tasty,crispy and hot. My husband had the haddock and chips and declared that it was the best fish and chips he has ever had because both the fish and chips were cooked perfectly,the batter was crisp and the fish sweet,fresh and tasty. An added bonus was we discovered that we were entitled to 10% off because we had taken the hop on and off bus that day

Wonderful place great fish and chips amazing curry sauce and peas. Slightly marred by the 1st server not understanding this issues with Allergies we asked her to check on the Batter for Eggs but she never came back to say it's fine. Fortunately as we always do we asked the other server who brought the food out for reassurance to find out there was indeed a big risk of cross contamination. This was rectified with the gluten free option replacement and my meal placed on warming plate etc so we dodge a big bullet. So thumbs down to one and big thumbs up to the other. Would still recommend the place 👌

Chips were decent. Fish was ok but far too small for the price charged; very poor value for money. I know I’m not going to be the servers new bestie, but a civil greeting and a bit of eye contact wouldn’t come amiss.

We went here for lunch when visiting York with another couple. We ordered the pensioner offer of fish and chips with a free cup of tea. When the food arrived it was a bigger portion than I expected. The food was lovely fresh and hot. The confusion came when the waitress brought the bill. There was a 10% service charge on and the meals were charged at £11.75 each. The other couple went to pay the bill and told them to knock off the service off. We were leaving a tip but decide not to. Half of the bill was £23.40 and we gave this to the other couple. I was a bit annoyed we had to pay for something we had not ordered. We might go again but will be sure to get what we ordered. The restaurant is a bit claustrophobic and dark.

Wonderful fish and chip shop with gluten free options. I loved my lunch. However, as I poured ketchup on my chips, my cup of tea appeared right move right across the table. My wife noticed and looked at me as if to see, did that cup just move on its own! Further enquiries revealed that there is indeed a resident ghost!

Came for lunch, didn’t have to queue for long, waitress serving was very friendly and food was served quickly. I’ve had plenty of fish and chips over the years and this is hands one of the best I’ve had. The mushy peas were delicious too. Beautiful setting, not what you expect from a fish and chip restaurant. 10/10!

Me &my friend Barbara, came to Drake's for a proper fish and chips lunch. Donna our waitress was lovely, she got me and my Barbara sat in a lovely bit of restaurant, for our lunch. The meals for oap where very generous 😋. The oap meals are cheap , generous and came with a free pot of Yorkshire tea for two. We will be visiting every Friday for our fish and chips Friday. 💯. The food is absolutely fine. The thing that irritated us that a chippy with a back room in York have the cheek to add a 10percent service charge. We only noticed this when looking more carefully at the bill once we were outside, lesson learnt! We also left £3 on the table, so a tip pushing £6 in total. I just hope all went to the waitress involved. It’s a fast food “restaurant” not the Ivy 😡

We came to this place as part of our walking tour of York. The service was excellent, very friendly and fast. We ordered a couple of appetizers and they were very good. For the main course we ordered Fish & Chips and a burger. The burger was good, but the fish, which was supposed to be the star, was a little disappointing. I must say that it was very fresh and the consistency of the dough was very crispy, but it lacked flavor. Even after adding quite a bit of salt and vinegar it felt a little bland.

One of the best fish and chips my wife and I had . We went into the seating area and the service was brilliant lovely and friendly staff the fish was amazing nice thin crispy batter , not this thick soggy batter you get in most chip shops where you got to find the fish though the batter. If you visit york go Drakes, you won't be disappointed

Had booked a table it was our anniversary . The staff was fantastic saw us ro our table gave us both a small bottle fo prosecco with our meal complementary. Food was lovely, freshly cooked.

Had chips to take away. Daughter is coeliac and had read good reviews. They cook chips in a separate fryer for coeliacs and have different take out boxes for the food. Had to wait for fryer to heat up, which shows they genuinely have a separate fryer. Great taste.

Service was very good and quick. However fish and chips weren’t that great. Pretty average and didn’t live up to its billing in our opinion. Have had a lot better. Also pretty expensive, and it’s not like it’s Rick Stein or anything. Wouldn’t use again....

Always very good nice location and welcoming friendly staff. I always rate the place highly and have been many times. Recently the quality has dropped greasy soggy pale chips not edible. Hopefully it will improve. Fish overcooked many new staff not great really in general.

Wow! A wonderful warm and friendly greeting by our hostess Nikki who guided us to a great table, was very knowledgeable about all aspects of the menu and treated us like family! All the staff were incredibly attentive and warm it was a lovely atmosphere to be in! Our go to fish and chip place, all of the family continually enjoy it. Great gluten free options (with good labelling system), lots of choice, cooked in beef dripping (the best way, there is no beef flavour if that concerns you) and never greasy. Keep it up Drake’s!
