Very disappointing. Afternoon tea for a family occasion for fourteen. Basic sandwiches on supermarket bread - one egg; tuna; ham and cheese and cucumber with a few lettuce leaves for garnish. No other garnish tomatoes or savouries. Delicious meringue a small scone with jam & cream a chocolate slice and a bake well slice priced at £16.95 per person. The cakes were delicious and the setting lovely. However the service was less than attentive and the owner extremely rude and abrupt. Such a shame it spoiled a special occasion and we shall not be returning

Absolutely terrible owner/manager Booked afternoon tea for 14 people , so we spent over £200 .. the cakes to give them credit were lovely. No choice of sandwiches, as per the menu just given the cheap ones from the menu … this was not stated on the booking !Never asked if everything was okay by any of the staff …. On paying the manager/owner rolled her eyes as there was a little confusion over payment !!!!When one of the party confronted her , she asked why no one had left a tip?!? (One lady had )Terrible terrible !!! Spoilt the occasion!!!

I met a friend for breakfast at this lovely tea room. The decor is gorgeous. I was delighted to see that Eggs Benedict and Eggs Royale were on the menu.I went for the Eggs Royale and it was fabulous. The cakes looked amazing too but sadly I was too full to sample them. Next time???... The tables are well spread out, the staff are all wearing full face visors, there are screens at the till area and you have to wait to be shown to your table. All very reassuring at this time.

We tried to visit last Sunday but despite the internet saying the it was open, when we got there it was closed, perhaps due to the local road flooding. Went back today and arrived at 1410 to be told that only drinks and cakes were available the kitchen having shut ar 1400h. The staff were standing around talking to each other so were not cleaning the kitchen, and there were only two tables occupied. This used to be a busy cafe with cycling groups calling in for food until closing ting, looks like they have lost the drive to develop the business, and no doubt will suffer as a consequence. The drinks and cakes were ok.

Dropped in for the first time yesterday and was delighted by all aspects of this cafe. People welcoming, scones fresh and delicious, a BIG mug of really good coffee with hot milk, lovely patio area (and inside looked nice too), toilets clean and - joy of joy! - paper towels and hot taps that you actually turn off rather than the type you press and can’t turn off, which invariably waste loads of hot water. So high score on all fronts. I will return!

This was our first visit since the move to the converted barn. We asked for a Yorkshire rarebit but this was on the breakfast menu which was not being served after 11:30, it was 11:35. However on looking at the light bites/lunch menu we could have had bacon on sourdough. A bacon sandwich on whatever bread is surely more breakfast than rarebit! We ended up with toasted teacakes extortionately priced at £2:75 - clearly paying for the upgrade! The quaint character , the lovely garden and pleasant staff all gone. It was sad to see Doyly's has now become another faceless tearoom. We won't be back

Visited as a couple with our dog. Hugely disappointed to be relegated to the courtyard outside in the rain, due to having our small non shedding dog with us. On the plus side there were some umbrellas and on the downside a very loud and annoying party of cyclists. By comparison our dog was perfectly behaved. The food and service was, as usual, excellent, if a little expensive for being sat outside in the cold and rain. Please D'oyly's, reconsider your policy on well behaved dogs. Many cafes in York accept dogs and as a rural venue welcoming walkers, it was very disappointing that unruly and boisterous children are accepted but well behaved and quiet dogs are refused.

Having been frequent visitors enjoying afternoon tea in the beautiful cottage garden, on our first visit back since the cafe moved to the converted barn, it was a bit of a disappointing experience. Gone was the beautiful setting, to be replaced by a walled outside seating area, with hard landscaping and zero view. It needs a lot of work to soften the perspective. Avoid the toasted tea cakes- bland and tasteless in my view - sorry - and not worth £2.75 each I can assure you. Not sure leaving cutlery outside for sitting outside customers (like us, with a dog) to select with their meals is an approach that I would prefer. The inside facilities looked fine, clearly a lot of customer interest, and staff very friendly. Service was prompt. Just seems to miss that homely feel, which was a major attraction and selling point for us, and no doubt others too. Shame that the use of lovely China crockery seems to have been discontinued for outside seated customers. Not all change is for the best I'm afraid.

This tea room was never somewhere you would stop off on a whim and since the bridge collapse at Tadcaster making access that more difficult you would have to have decided to visit in advance. The setting is nice and the garden perfect for enjoying the last day of summer. The sandwiches were well filled even if the triangles were a little small. The egg mayonnaise was warm which indicated that it had been freshly prepared. So far so good. The scones were diminutive. There might have been an argument for offering two per customer. Mine was very nice though. The Jam was in its tiptree? jar. And the cream was pre packed. But a justified complaint is that it was one jar and one pack per table. Given the size of the scone that was probably sufficient but it does tend to leave a poor impression. The lemon drizzle cake was really nice as was the small triangular caramel shortcake. No complaints about the tea and coffee. And the service was satisfactory and the waitress very friendly.Which leaves the question of the final grade. My initial intention was to award it five stars because we left fully satisfied. Then there is the small niggle about the portion size and the pre packed cream and jam. Given that most of the clients seemed to be of a certain age the size probably isn't an issue and tiptree jams are very nice. So okay, 5 stars it is. And £11.95 isn't bad value for a quality afternoon tea.

A curious experience. We turned up late Sunday morning after the breakfast menu had finished but following an enquiry to the waitress (who scurried off looking slightly scared, and saying "I'll ask her") it was agreed we could choose anything from the breakfast menu apart from the Full brunch. So far so good, and kind of them to be flexible. Then we perused the menu. The brunch (which we can't have) turns out to be Bacon, poached egg, mushrooms, and tomato, beans, on toast. But we can't have that. What we can have is:Poached eggs on toastBeans toastMushrooms on toastBacon sandwich. So, basically, all the components of the brunch, apart from the brunch. I ordered poached eggs on toast, with extra bacon. So far so good. My friend ordered eggs on toast, with bacon, mushrooms, and tomato. Quick scurry to the kitchen follows. "She'll do eggs, bacon & mushrooms, But not tomato". Crazy! Please, can you add half a tomato? We'll pay extra. No, she says no, that would be almost a brunch and we said you can't have that. So, we reluctantly ordered. The (not brunch) brunches arrives. The eggs were fried. Not poached. We asked for poached, and the only option on the menu is poached. We got fried. But we said nothing. They were awfully overcooked. But we said nothing. We went to pay. "Are you paying together or separately". Now, we had been helpful and tried our best to gather our change and pay together the make it easy for the staff. We'd each spent £6/7 so if we paid separately, lots of pound coins would be needed for change. But we tried to help.. We needed a £5 note changing so we could give everyone their change. But no "we won't give you change". We needed 5 pound coins. If we paid separately we would have needed 21 pound coins! All in all we spent almost £50 between us. Ironically if we could have had the brunch it would have been nearer £75. All in all an odd experience. Lovely waiting staff who are clearly controlled by "she" in the kitchen who makes strange decisions. We won't go back. That's a shame. So much bad feeling towards a business caused by the refusal of a tomato!

We called here this afternoon after a good walk. We had been before, but quite a while ago. It is a lovely old fashioned tea room, with plenty of seating in the garden. We were soon served by a pleasant young lady and ordered tea for two and two slices of tray bake. Plenty of tea and extra hot water, but, the tray bakes were on the small size. The raspberry and almond slice was ok, my husband ordered the salted caramel shortbread, this was a very small triangle, and had salted peanuts on the top, not what we would expect for salted caramel, and as he doesn't eat nuts, not ideal. The main problem we had was the cost, £9.20! For two teas and two small bits of cake. Needless to say we will not be visiting again as there are plenty of places with a lot better choice and quite a bit cheaper where you get a lot more for your money. Such a shame, as the setting is perfect!

I had not been to this tearoom for a few years and we were looking forward to a nice lunch. Service was slow but there was a table of eight being served and only one lady serving. I ordered a Welsh rarebit with egg and my partner the soup and fruit scone and a toasted tea cake. The rarebit was ok - a bit bland, the scone very small for the price, but the main problem was that the soup was scalding hot and took about 15 mins to be cool enough to eat. We were then informed that there were no tea cakes. We then asked for lemon cake which were told was off so opted for the carrot cake which was also off. We overheard other people being told that plain scones and quiche were also not available. On enquiring why so many Homemade menu items were unavailable we were told that these had run out at the weekend and the delivery was tomorrow ( it was Wednesday when we visited). Thought the food was home made on the premises! The response to the issue of the boiling soup was that it was better hot than cold. We will not be going back.

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights and had an evening meal on one night. Our room was spacious and very clean, lots of hanging and drawer space. Comfortable bed. Our evening meal was delicious. There were three starters to choose from, followed by home cooked steak and kidney pie, then two choices of pudding. The menu took account of my dietary needs (I don't tolerate dairy very well and had emailed this information in advance of our stay). Breakfast was also excellent. The owners were friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. Bolton Percy is located quite close to York so this would be an ideal base for visiting York and for exploring the surrounding area. This tea room is beautifully situated and the food is very nice. You can sit in beautiful gardens on a newly created patio. Everything should make this 5 stars but ... nearly one hour wait for a Brie and grape sandwich? A short factual "sorry for the wait" only arrived with the food - apparently it was an unusually busy midweek day (we overheard the waitress say to a familiar customer). This is the slowest service we have received here but not the first time we thought the service has been slow. It would have helped if we had been informed that they were unusually busy when we placed our order. Not sure we can face returning.

We came across D'Oyly's whilst visiting St Johns church and the "garden graveyard" and what a find it was! We were originally going to sit outside in the neat, sheltered garden but the wind was a bit chill so we chose a table inside. It's like going back in time to a Victorian sitting room; a lovely old fashioned fireplace and attractive ornaments and old photos all around (I was particularly enamoured of the Art Deco onyx mantel clock....)My Dad and brother went for the afternoon tea and I chose the cheese salad followed by Yorkshire curd tart. The afternoon tea came on a proper cake stand and all the crockery is Albert Old English Roses. The salad was a tasty mix of leaves with the addition of chopped grapes and strawberries and there were four very generous chunks of cheese - Brie, a strong white and a crumbly white and a fantastically pungent blue veined one. Little pots of home made chutney and coleslaw and a brown roll and butter finished it off nicely. The curd tart is one of the nicest I've tasted, just the right mix of creamy and tangy with plenty of fruit and peel and nice short pastry. The menfolk equally enjoyed their meals, with special mention going to the chocolate cake.Service is quick and friendly, prices reasonable and there is plenty of parking. Add to that two very friendly, unobtrusive cats and its the ideal place for a civilised English summer afternoon treat!

We stayed there in July 2013 for the first time, we really enjoyed our two night stay. We had a warm welcome and were greated with tea and scones in the garden. The breakfast we had was first class and there was a big choice, we had cereals and fresh fruit to start with a choice of fresh fruit juices. We had full English breakfast which was cooked to perfection. This place is a little gem, and there is a local pub serving meals. Well worth a visit.Alan+Bev (Flamborough)

I've visitied D'Oyly's Tearooms several times over the past few years, and enjoyed some excellent cream teas. What a disappointment on our recent visit in June, though. I was presented with two very small scones, about the same diameter as a £2 coin! They tasted nice, as did the cream and jam, but were most definitely not good value for money. I'd like to think it was just because it was nearing the end of the afternoon, but we aren't likely to pay another visit any time soon to find out.

We have been to D'Oyly's several times and always really enjoy it.. the afternoon teas are fantastic. However this time we were let down by poor service, it took us nearly 45 minutes just to get a menu. To be fair they were very busy and I think they were caught out by the first sunny sunday afternoon of the year. The service is normally excellent so we won't be put off by this "blip" and we will be going back soon.No hesitation in recommending D'Oyly's

I visited D'Oyly's tearoom with three friends whilst out walking in the area. It is the perfect place for middle aged ladies to stop for lunch. We had two well behaved dogs with us so chose a quiet spot in the garden and soon a pleasant woman appeared with the menus. I chose a prawn sandwich which came with salad and coleslaw and my friends chose other sandwiches and one chose soup. All of these were nicely presented. We opted for cups of tea and this was served in china tea cups - all very civilised and very much in keeping with the gentile english village. My friends then had chocolate cake and this looked delicious, shame I am on a diet. The food was good and the service excellent. I would definitely return.

D'oyly's is one of those magical little places that you discover by accident and then look forward to revisiting. A proper tea room with utterly divine cream teas (the scones are amazing). Their afternoon tea with sandwiches and slices of cake has to be a fantastic treat. They also do a large range of hot food for a tea room too. In the summer there are tables outside in the garden, they're very welcoming to cyclists, and even have puncture repair kits for those little emergencies. There's also inside seating should the weather be somewhat inclement. I've not stayed in the B&B as this is a place I usually stop off at whilst out on the bicycle, so I can't comment on that, but the location is beautiful. Well recommended.
