Former medieval abbey turned parish church. Free to visit! Some interesting medieval features survive, including a beautiful chancel with Jesse Tree window and excellently carved sedilia and piscine. Check out the church monuments, including four medieval effigies. Also of note is the only surviving monastic lead font in England. *Very* little of the other monastic structures survive. Easily one of the coolest sites in south Oxfordshire, but I wouldn't recommend international tourists to make the journey to Dorchester on Thames just for this church. Nonetheless, it is of great local worth

Founded in the 12th century , the Abbey Church is all that remains of the original abbey. However what does remain , is well worth stopping at . There is a shrine to st Birinus , a number of wonderful tombs , a 12thc font, medieval Wall paintings and wonderful stained glass. Pretty much something for everyone. Just outside the church is a museum and cafe (unfortunately not open on my visit) . There is parking and toilets nearby, and the village itself is full of interesting buildings. A wonderful visit.

It was great to visit the Abbey Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul or Dorchester Abbey as it is better known . If for no other reason, it was the Bishopric of one Saint Birinus since 634 when he arrived and the Abbey was founded 55 years later and dedicated to Peter and Paul and Birinus himself . Now, Birinus could be described as a posh Saint Cedd who drew the short straw and got Essex whilst he himself got Wessex . I must say before I get called names, I myself hail from the wonderful Dagenham and would have it no other way . Well, both these heroes of the cloth gave it their best shot at guiding the locals to the light . There is a shrine to Birinus here today and I believe it holds relics of his . He himself successfully converted King Cynegils and baptised him perhaps with a little help from Saint Oswald King of Northumbria . There are some great wall paintings in here and also some great stained glass . There is also a union flag here which has a very interesting though tragic tale to tell . I personally loved a very simple wooden cross hung against a whitewashed wall . Simple is often the best in my opinion . Outside it is very picturesque and peaceful as is the village and surrounding countryside . There is a memorial on a wall to Sir Winston Churchill which states the great east window was restored by American friends of Dorchester Abbey . I enjoyed my visit and believe you will too if you can get here .

Very impressed. Well maintained & interesting - there seems to have been some (American-origin Churchill money spent here) and the Abbey is a popular music venue. Apart from the numerous stained windows the interior was strikingly bright with some very large flank windows. Tried and oddly failed to find accompanying church of St Paul & Peter. Is it now that building that looks like a large house? Regret we were a little discouraged by the rain and didn't persist... Or have I misunderstood? The village also looks like worth a leisurely tour, but again the rain...

We've been visiting Dorchester Abbey tearoom ( aka Lettice's) for about 30 years now and we still love it. In the old days you sat inside with anyone who happened to be there at a big round table and helped yourself to whichever cakes you fancied and totted up your own bill on a slate at the end. We loved that! It felt so trusting! Nowadays it's more like an ordinary tearoom and you order and pay before you eat but the homemade cakes are just as good as they always were and so is the tea. The volunteers are helpful and friendly and there is plenty of room to sit outside (and a decent toilet). I recommend walking from Wittenham Clumps across the fields and over the river to look at the Abbey at have tea at Lettice's...

I Wasn’t expecting too much from a pub dinner in a rather nondescript Oxfordshire village on a Tuesday evening but I was most pleasantly surprised. The pub is very old and as such cosy and inviting. There is a good selection of draught beer served at one of the fireside tables by most welcoming staff. The menu is varied and original and prices are reasonable. One of the specials of the day was sea bass. It was as good as any top London restaurant. The 45 minute drive was well worth it and I shall be returning soon.
