Donkey Derby in Chesterfield

We came to eat here for the first time as we were looking for somewhere out to have my birthday meal. Really surprised with the great range of choice and settled on a burger with my wife having a chicken dish. The food came out amazingly quick and was delicious. One slight issue was dealt with so fantastically and professionally by the server and the manager. An extra shout out is needed for how well the small issue was handled and we could not be more appreciative, I even got a birthday candle in my cheesecake!! The food was wonderful but it is the management and staff that will have us coming back very soon.

For a "pub grub" experience, this is a good one. Decent sized portions, reasonable prices, friendly staff, nice drinks and good quality. The service is reasonably fast and the meals always arrive hot. Add in a good choice of drinks and some nice desserts - great stuff. Improvements? Minor stuff like considering increased staffing when it's busy and making sure all items are available - but in the main a decent place.

There were 4 in our party and we decided to have the 2 meals for 13.99, 3 had fish & chips and I had Steak & Ale pie, all 3 fish & chips were good and well worth the price however the Steak & Ale pie was very disappointing. I accept that for less than £7 you’re not going to get a pie full of meat put I found it difficult to find 1 piece of meat of any significance, I would say that 90% of the contents was gravy, very disappointing.

We was a party of 10 birthday meal mainly mixed grills all cooked diffrently and to perfection it was tuesday 17th sept 7pm and it was quite busy we was shown where to sit and staff was so attentive nothing was too much troble will you let the chef know he/she did a beautiful job food was cooked to perfection bar staff was great not sure of male bar staffs name could of been steve ? Was wearing glasses he was very helpfull checked if everything was ok for us and very polite will be coming again hope its soon we all had a great night yhankyou to all imvolved great service cu all soon

Couldn't fault the 2 for 14 quid lunch menu

Just had 2 for 13.99, Gammon and Hunters chicken, and couldn't fault it for the money, friendly staff, good service, would recommend

Called here on a day out with friends only for a drink but decided to have food . Ordered burgers plus extra fries and onion rings food was quick but all four buns were very dry and hard my burger was a dry and,wasn't given the choice of taking of gherkins 🥒 but other than that it was,a pleasant experience.

Always beautifully clean, staff are always very polite, attentive and professional. Good drinks and the food is always served quickly, presented nicely and best of all really good value for money.

Food was excellent. Bar staff serving both food and drink so it was slow, but also they were interviewing, so that took senior staff off the bar when they could have done with helping. Was a long wait, but understandable (may be an idea to hold interviews at a less busy time?). It's not a place where an atmosphere can be created.

Massive pub with lots of choice on the menu! I recommend the tater totts, which were a ferm fav with our table. I had a sizzler with the tikka masala sauce which was divine and like nothing I've had anywhere. Fresh hot food at a great price. I had the raspberry old moot to accompany, but there was loads of drinks choice too. We were stuffed, but really enjoyed our meals. Planning to return soon, thanks to all the team for a lovely meal / evening out

Well what an amazing place I booked a table of 15, as a goodbye to my son who's joining the army. The whole experience was great the food come out correct, together and pipping hot. The food was excellent some of the best we have had. The service from all was excellent a credit to green king. You should definitely try it out the service environment food was beyond expectation. Will definitely be going again when we visit chesterfield

As pub food goes, this was great. The mixed grill was such a big portion and all the meat was cooked perfectly. And we got to watch the football too 👍

Came for food and drinks before a football game. Very friendly staff, food was quick to arrive and was hot and delicious. Toilet facilities were clean and well maintained and there was plenty of parking on site.

Just had drinks before going to watch Leicester city play, busy in there but good atmosphere.

BOGOF burger deal is fantastic, southern fried chicken burger is my 8 year old favourite, says its better than McDonald's!

Had the chicken combo last night 1st August absolute garbage,the so called chicken breasts were not much bigger thana two pound coin,and as tough as old boots we took most of it home for a stray cat we feed and even he didn't want it.we also had the chicken skewers which were grossly over cooked,in fact I think they may have been cooked a few days ago, absolutely crozzled. altogether not a very good experience, especially with the price of drinks in there ,anyway we cut our losses and went into town and had another round of drinks in a town centre pub less than half of the price at the donkey derby certainly won't be going again

Had the steak and ale pie. I like my food hot so I have to blow it and this was delivered. Unfortunately, the pie let it all down. The pastry was too thick, rock hard and a soggy bottom. Will go again but won’t be having the pie

We had a family meal for our sons 15th birthday From walking in, to leaving the service was amazing! The food was served hot and in perfect time. We had Hunters chicken x3 stacked burgers x2 steak and a mixed grill and we cannot fault any of it! The bar staff and waiting on staff were polite and nothing was too much trouble for them. From our food today I would highly recommend this lovely pub! Thank you for a great meal Especially to the young bar staff, that was training, you did brill!!

We visited on a Saturday afternoon around 3.30pm. It was easy to find a table for two, we placed our order and our hot drinks were delivered to the table. The two meals were reasonably priced with the meals and drinks costing £23. The wait for food was predicted to be around 30 minutes, which proved to be right and both were piping hot.

Lovely friendly staff and great food, staff member forgot my coffee due to her being very busy and she kindly gave me my money back, not that I expected it but it was a nice gesture.

My friends food came out with 5 chips on his plate and a sprinkle of peas this looked like a child's portion my fish came out smashed to bits that i sent back it then came back with burnt battered fish and stone cold mushy peas a table spoons worth my friend was so angry he said we will not be coming back here again the manager was rude and said do not come back because we had complained the food is sub standards and a disgrace 26 pound for slop do yourself a favour and avoid this place

The new menu at the Donkey Derby is to die for! I can not fault the new menu what so ever… I had the sirloin steak flatbread but it was that good I forgot to take a photo, however I managed to grab a half eaten photo of the rack of ribs that was eaten by family members. As you can see from the photo the rack of ribs are huge and just fall of the bone. We also had the New Sticky Toffee Pudding Cheesecake and my god that was amazing. Looked and tasted just like the photos on the menu. Fantastic staff and amazing customer service. Would so highly recommend the Donkey Derby if you’re wanting to go out for a meal out. Well done Donkey Derby!!

Great place to be , good selection of drinks. Meals are great value for money ( eaten here many times ). Staff are always pleasant and polite. Very family friendly. Just remember to blow the cobwebs off Richard he's worked here so long and excellent at his job

Came in to watch the champions league match, and was very impressed with the staffs attitude, food and general nice environment of the pub. Think it’s a hungry horse style pub but don’t let that put you off, beers good, foods freshly cooked and they don’t hold back on how many chips come with the burger meal deal for £9. 10/10 staff which were polite and gave a good feel to the place.

Went for a meal today and was way too busy we had a table booked but was too busy and the table was in the middle of everyone and as a person with bad anxiety no good made me feel very uncomfortable so did not stop for meal

What a pleasant place!!! Just wanted to say great food great environment but in particular wanted to mention how very pleasant your staff are so welcoming and so friendly it really does make a huge difference to customers when your staff’s customer service skills are way above average nothing was too much trouble! Being polite and friendly really is the difference in returning custom and non returning custom!! I didn’t catch the girls names but they both had auburn/copper hair one long and curly, one short and bobbed they deserve recognition for their pleasantries…a credit to the company.

Had the cheesy BBQ stack, brioche bun was soft and fresh and the chips were very nice. The burger however was very dry and overcooked making it difficult to eat and not a pleasant dining experience at all

Visited the Donkey Derby in Chesterfield for a 66th birthday party, and i wanted to thank the staff team , every member of staff was friendly and welcoming, the food wait was just 30 mins and the different foods ordered were hot and delicious.

Food good quality and reasonable price. Staff very helpful and friendly. Atmosphere lost a star because, to me, it's a bit noisy and I'm there to chat as well as eat. That said, the music is good and I'm definitely going again.

This is one of my favourite places in the Chesterfield town centre area. I mainly come for the food, which is good, but sometimes isn't consistent enough on some visits (most times it's bob on, but once or twice it has been sub-par) I will continue dining here as I think it's one of the best places to grab a quick meal considering it is a pub. Obviously, for a more romantic experience there are other places. For what it is, I can't fault it. I just need to remember to come in on Monday-Wednesday and not a weekend (it's Steak night - man has to have a favourite).

Just got back from donkeys derby food was excellent as usual had the hunters chicken skillet with my mum the chicken was so succulent and everything hot was served at the bar by Brittany who was very friendly and efficient when taking the order well done been a few times and will be back

Food was nice and good price for a sharer. But only one slice of courgette with the steak. Hidden under the steak. On another visit we all had chicken combos. Everyone enjoyed there food.

we travelled to the area and had heard about the Donkey Derby as a great family friendly place to eat. Brittany was full of smiles and clearly enjoyed making sure we we happy with our evening. What a pleaseure to find someone like this in today’s society. We also had some interaction with Lauren, who saw we had finished and was quick to check on us, ensuring everything was as expected. Stopped here when collecting goods from town. Staff were very accommodating and friendly. Food was excellent for the price. Wish we had something like this pub local to us.. We'd be using it all the time

Disappointed. Booked a table for 1pm for 4 people to enjoy a lunchtime break with my mum & nephew. When we arrived we were told its an hour wait for food even though we'd booked with a week's notice! Explained that wouldn't work as I needed to be back at work in an hour. Was told nothing they could do. Won't be bothered to try again.

Went to donkey derby chesterfield with my fiancé and daughter and had the rump steak which was cooked to perfection so well done to the chefs 10/10 But the stand out member of staff for us tonight was Alex who I must say was very polite very helpful and went above and beyond in his task to make us comfortable and welcome so a huge 10/10 to him he is a credit to the team who are all wonderful in their own ways and we certainly look forward to returning again👍🫶😀

What can i say this pub is the best in chesterfield ,great staff ,excellent customer service ,and best of all the food is very very nice,never ever had a bad meal here allways piping hot and very tasty ,chefs need recognition ,Alex served us with a smile he deffinately deserves recognition ,such a gentleman ,a big thankyou to Alex and all the staff at the Donkey Derby ,will be back again this week thankyou team ,.

Having eaten here loads of times before,my daughter n her boyfriend booked us in for mother's day lunch. 6 of us in our party, 2 of us had beef roast dinner. The other 4 had different choices. Had a lovely time, excellent service as always. However the 2 of us that had beef dinners were up all night with horrendous trips to the toilet, experienced awful tummy pains and sweats! The others in the group were fine. We are both putting this down to the beef as we both felt it was rubbery and tasted like microwave meal meat! This is the first time we've ever had a bad experience here and we will come again regardless but won't have a Sunday lunch again.

Visited on Thursday evening, ordered at the bar, went to the loo and back to my table and the food turned up 😮. Lightning fast service and the Hunters Chicken skillet was lovely. I know drop-in seating can be difficult to find at times so if there's a lot of you I'd book ahead. Well worthy of a visit

Group of 6 of us went for food and drinks on Sunday night around 6.30pm. Staff very friendly, service good and the food was very good. Unfortunately 1 in our party asked for a coffee and was told it wasn't available as the machine had been cleaned and 1 of the premium lagers is ridiculously expensive which we didn't know about until it was poured and the staff member was waiting for payment.
