Called into the only road cafe we could see on this road. Took a while for staff to turn up, trouble finding menu, then said they would be back in a few minutes. After seeing the 1 star food hygiene rating and realised that everything smelled of grease we made a swift exit and left. Did not think places like this still existed.

These toilets are probably the worst I’ve ever seen, in fact I’ve seen cleaner at a festival! If you do decide to eat in here, with the 1 star food rating you’ll stink of grease afterwards!

I stopped here on my way north after reading the highly rated reviews. BIG mistake:Yes the staff are very polite and friendly but I should have moved on when I saw the Hygene rating of 1. Unfortunately I’d already ordered and paid for two sandwiches so decided to stick it out. Two sandwiches on white bread (no other choices) which was the cheapest and most mass produced available arrived and were partly eaten. The overall decor is tired dated and not very clean with toilets at the rear of the garage workshops which are shocking and not what you’d reasonably expect at a cafe. The only reason I submitted this review is my deep suspicion over the other very highly rated reviews so beware, this is a very tired but cheap pit stop. Why 2 stars and not 1? The sandwiches were eatable apart from that I can’t rate it higher.

We love this little cafe!!!! As other reviews state it's not a state of the art cafe but it's the most important things that are spot on. The staff are very friendly, the lady that runs the cafe remembers us although we only call in on our way to Wales a few times a year. The food is fantastic....all home cooked and served with a smile. Not to expensive and a good range offered.

This cafe is a little gem tucked in next to the old Tata garage just outside of Llanidloes. Not much to look at from the outside but the food is always good be it full English or a Sunday roast and the staff are very friendly. I always judge a place by how many locals go there and how busy it is, I have never seen this place empty.

What a jewel in the Crown. Been here twice for breakfast now and it is unbelievable. It's not a place where I would normally eat as it looks really shabby from outside and made of wood. The inside is dated too. The staff are really friendly and welcoming and the breakfast is well priced and definitely value for money. I chose the largest breakfast and it has beaten me both times. Only critism is that it would be ideal if a drink was included with the breakfast instead of toast. My mother in law has a caravan not too far away and has had Sunday lunch at the cafe, again she has said value for money and a good range of starters. Usually 4 meats and delicious puddings. Definitely give it a try. I am sure you won't be disappointed.

Ive been going to the Dolwen Cafe for my breakfast for the past 18 months and its simply wonderful - on average about 2-3 times a month with my wife and 4 year old daughter as we live nearby. Llanidloes is well served for food venues and this is one of the best. The food is delicious, well prepared, and the Mair, the wonderful lady (now a family friend) who runs this place along with her super staff cannot be more welcoming or happy to serve. She has even stayed open longer for my wife and daughter when they needed food. As a doctor working shifts she looks after me day and night wiht hearty meals that raise my spirits. I cant praise it, or her enough. Its stepping back in time to a place where we were happier as a nation, and that's something to cherish. I dont do posh - this isnt, and isnt pretentious. If you want posh go elsewhere - you wont be missed!

Is what we heard some fellow customers say. The cafe is very dated, old tables with peeling Formica, hard plastic chairs, rusty radiators etc. Don't go to the toilet unless it's an emergency. That said the staff were wonderful, friendly and kind. The food was fast, tasty and reasonably priced. It has a really special atmosphere, very cosy, friendly and welcoming. We'd definitely go again if we were passing but we'd make sure we had a wee beforehand!

My friend, my son and I decided to stop off at the Dolwen Garage Cafe Thursday late afternoon as we had not eaten anything since early morning as we had been touring Wales on our 3 bikes. We pulled into the cafe and even though it was about closing time the staff were really helpful and cooked two of us an all day breakfast and a chip meal for my son. We've never stopped here before but would do so again as the food was excellent, freshly cooked and not at all greasy. The price was very reasonable and served quickly, we decided to sit outside as it was such a lovely day and had a really pleasant time - in fact my son remarked on how well his food was cooked - many thanks.

Tucked away beside Dolwen Garage this little gem of an eating house is easily missed. Excellent freshly cooked food, large menu. The big breakfasts and sunday lunches are a delight. Some of the locals actually order a sunday lunch, then come and take it away, bringing their plates from the week before. Friendly, lovely staff; always remind me of my dearest Auntie Millie. Nothing is too much trouble. Freshly cooked, local sourced food at its best. We always stop here as we drive to and from Shrewsbury to visit friends. A roadside cafe/restaurant as they used to be in days gone by. And the home-made cakes with a mug of tea on an afternoon stop. Just right! May they continue to flourish.

We dropped in without booking hoping to get lunch. I was with my friend and her disabled dad. They were able to offer us a table and from the start the experience was excellent. The staff member ( I think it was the Manager) came out to the car park to see if we needed any help with the wheelchair. We were promptly seated and drinks and food order taken quickly. All members of staff were polite and friendly. The food came in a good waiting time and we were all really pleased with the food. I had an ultimate burger, my friend a Thai beef dish and her dad an all day breakfast. Great portion sizes, hot and all tasty. Really reasonably priced as well ! Thankyou for such a great experience

We stopped here to break up a long journey. Straight away it seemed very unwelcoming. My son is autistic, and because he seemed more comfortable in the corner section we asked to move tables. We were advised that was the dog friendly section, and obviously we would move if needed, it was quiet at the time, but this seem like an inconvenience to move tables. Then when my son was wandering in the pub, this seemed to annoy a couple of guests, and I know he seemed hyperactive but these are some of his autistic traits, this seemed to annoy one couple in particular, where the man was making very rude comments ( I know you have no control over who comes into your pub) but overall it just felt very unwelcoming in there. Are kids not allowed in here? It didn't seem like it. We come past this pub often, so we will not be stopping here again.

Nice enough pub and the ladies working there were very pleasant. After reading the reviews we were looking forward to a nice lunch but I was bitterly disappointed by my choice. The lasagne had virtually no filling, it was all pasta and completely lacked any flavour at all. I've never used so much salt and pepper with a meal to try and add some taste. I really hope they improve on the recipe moving forward.

My wife and I were staying in a B&B in Berriew which didn’t cook evening meals on a Sunday, so we decided to try this inn for our dinner. We arrived without reservations, but were quickly shown to a table by a very pleasant member of staff who immediately took our drinks order. The drinks arrived and we ordered our food soon after. It didn’t take long for the food to arrive, and it looked very well presented. My wife had lasagne, which she told me was hot and tasty, however my steak and ale pie with chips was not quite so. Again, my meal was hot, but the meat in the pie was very grisly, which was a shame as the pastry was excellent. The chips and beans with my meal were first class, so absolutely no problems with them. As we ate our meal the chef came out and asked if everything was okay with the food. I told him about the meat in the pie, to which he laughed and then walked away. Now, what’s the point in asking me about my meal if you are not going to take action when you receive such a comment? Anyway, we finished the meal and went up to the bar to pay, at which time we were asked again if all was okay. I told the member of staff at the bar about the meat and this time it had a totally different outcome, in that someone, whom I took to be the manager, became involved, and she showed concern about the fact that my meal had not been perfect. She also told me that she would be having words with the supplier about said pie. We ended the conversation coming to an amicable agreement of a goodwill gesture, so I’m more than happy with the outcome. If it had not have been for the issue with the pie then this meal would have been almost perfect, in that the staff were lovely, the restaurant was clean and in a good state of decoration, and the service was first rate. My only other comment would be that the prices were a tad dearer than around my home city of Leicester, but not unusual for a country inn.
