Friendly staff with a warm welcome. We came here several times during our stay at Windermere Lake. Bar staff were great - we enjoyed the weekly quiz night on a Thursday (family friendly and dog friendly) and then had Afternoon Tea on our last day of holiday - highly recommended! The roaring river outside provides an amazing setting and we heard the steam train toot-toot past too. A great place which deserves to be rated much higher.

We were on holiday in the Lakeland Village and enjoyed a mix of eating in our apartment - cooking ourselves - and eating out. We ate twice in the Dolly Blue Bar - the Fish and Chips on Friday evening were excellent and the meals o Saturday were fabulous: (Try the garlic prawns with chorizo sausage!). Four of us agreed that whilst there are a few nice eateries in the area this one is so good and nobody had to drive it really was a no-brainer to eat on the site.

Ordered take away which ended up costing same price as if you eat in! For this you had a cold meal with bacon missing from the bacon and cheese burger. Husband arrived before it was ready so it wasn't cold due to waiting. As we had eaten there 18 months ago and meal was OK thought we should eat in instead oh dear our mistake.... Ordered pie came with veg and new potatoes only when it arrived there was pie and pot of veg when asked where potatoes were waiter said he was new as if that was good enough, if they ran out of something an alternative should of been offered! Said we weren't prepared to pay full price. After we decided to have Irish coffee in lounge (will we vere learn!) cold coffee with no floating cream and no coffee biscuits. Needless to say will not be going here again. Shameful to call themselves a restaurant!

An average mark is maybe slightly harsh as we ate in the Dolly Blue a few times and generally were quite pleased with both food and service, but on our last visit the staff, despite almost outnumbering the customers, just seemed disinterested - we waited some time for a drinks order to be taken despite the waiter being completely unoccupied, we had to ask for cutlery as the holder on the table wasnt re-filled, we had to ask for sauces etc., and we had to ask for the table clearing when we had finished. If reviewing that night alone it was a “poor”, but the other nights drag up the average. There are however a couple of other things that might make the Dolly Blue a better experience; firstly why not stock some local beers, preferably on tap but even bottled would be better than nothing which is the offer now. Most of the competition has a range of real ales to sample. The lakes are over-flowing with small local breweries, why not support them? Secondly, why the big screen belting out music videos that nobody watches and which is largely annoying. It adds nothing to the atmosphere. But finally, and this may just encourage a bit more staff enterprise and engagement, why not pass on any tips to them? We asked on the first night if a tip added to the bill would go the waiter. The answer was no. Maybe some does, and legally may soon have to, but I find it quite poor that staff who are probably paid close to minimum wage dont even get the full tip. On the nights of good service we left cash instead which I hope they pocketed.

This is my second review of this place and I’ve been quite a few times. However we visited the other night and it’ll be our last. Firstly the manager took our drinks order, we were sat down and then someone came to take our food order, we all ordered off the early bird menu. There was three people on the bar and it didn’t seem that busy, however it took 20 mins for our drinks to arrive, then a further 40 mins for our food. By then our young son had fallen asleep so didn’t get his dinner. The food that came was bland and child size portions, the worse we’ve had anywhere we’ve eaten. Then when our deserts came they’d forgotten two of them. They were half the size of what we’ve got there in the past too. I’m not normally one for putting a complaint in, but this time I complained about the service to the manager when I went to pay, all his response was “sorry we’ve only a small kitchen”, I then paid the bill and we left. Only when I got home I’d checked my receipt, they’d charged us full price for everything and not the special price, along with that they’d put on the price of a pint and a glass of coke which we hadn’t had. Totalling an overcharge of about £20. So not only are they slow and give you tiny portions, but they’ve robbed me too. I’ve rated this terrible but in all honesty I’d of rated it lower if I could of. I’d urge everyone to avoid at all costs, there’s plenty other places locally to get a nice feed and good service.

Great for dinner, lunch and even breakfast. Great prices, lovely staff, good for outside eating next to the river Leven. My 6 year old sister once remarked on the chicken nuggets saying "it is made out of real chicken unlike common food chains"! I am sad to say the exciting and fun quiz night stopped running 2 years ago which was a shame so I am also writing on the behalf of my sister my dad and my grandad as they wish the quiz night started again. It brings popularity and joy to the bar as it is great fun for all age groups. There is one exception though about this which nobody can do they try to stop the water from overflowing during the winter period 2 years ago storm desmond ripped through the lakes and the rest of northern england which caused the bridge to nearly collapse like it did in 2009 fortunately it reopened and became better than ever! This is a 5 star bar and restaurant one of the best in England and it is a picture of perfection.

Attached to the Whitewater Hotel and Lakeland Village resort, this bar and restaurant sits right next to the rapids on the River Leven. The food is good, though the choice of local beers is limited. There are often offers you can take advantage of.You can sit outside on the riverbank, or inside with a great view through the large windows. We were there for dinner in October, so inside was the choice. We sat and watched the bats flying over the river in the last light! I ordered a Ulverston bitter, and my wife a coke. The menu is not massive but has a reasonable choice with a range of cuisines covering most of the bases. My wife had Cajun Chicken with Caesar Salad, and I had Sheppard's Pie. Both were presented imaginatively and attractively, and they tasted great. We both had Lakeland Sticky Toffee Pudding for afters, which was also really good. The price is reasonable, considering the location and setting, and given it is part of the hotel.Overall, highly recommended for dinner

I wanted to really rate this place as the staff are excellent but unfortunately on a cold, wet winters night it wasn't the best homely pub to be in. I would have imagined piling into a warm pub with a log fire, sheltering from the cold, snuggling up in a corner with a good beer and some hearty food. Instead we got a fake log fire in a bright room which resembled more like a cafe in the nearest town. The lager was limited to 3 poor drinks, Budweiser, fosters and a craft lager from the lakes (not recommended) the beers, I didn't try but we ordered food from the menu, pretty much like your local Witherspoons (brakes catering) and again not brilliant, chips were dry and the stew wasn't as tender as it should have been. However, the adjoining hotel was excellent and saved the day, it has a nice terrace which overlooks the rapids, this will be very nice in the summer and if the doors were all open onto the terrace I think this would be a different pub to suit the season!

(Note: The Dolly Blue Bar is NOT in Cleator but in Backbarrow, it is part of the Whitewater Hotel, The Lakeland Motor Museum, Village stores/post office and the Haverthwaite/Lakeside steam railway are both within 5 minutes walk)Named after the blue bags that were manufactured here until 1982, the Ultramarine or “Dolly Blue” as it became known as was a revolutionary product for laundries to bring that “whiter than white” look into their customers laundry! With its riverside frontage (and after the floods of November 2009), a major refurbishment of this area took place and the bar became the new “Dolly Blue Bar & Grill”. It provided locals and tourists with an informal family environment whilst still offering excellent food and service. Local historian Ron Mien has done an excellent job writing the 'History of the Whitewater Hotel' (Copies in Reception) from cotton mill to dolly blue era and the walls of the corridor and bar are adorned with superb photos from the days it operated. The modern red and brown leather bar sofas are lovely but in summer it's nice to sit on the exterior terrace right by the waters edge where the salmon leap (especially if chef throws them some scraps!)As darkness falls outside there is unique 'mood lighting' which provided a conversation piece as we enjoyed a glass of wine and a snack from the new comprehensive menu.My grandaughters especially enjoyed their choices from the children´s menu. Unfortunately yet again The Peddler has been let down by the same rude member of staff that we have dealt with a few times. We were greeted by this lady shouting from across the room asking how many seats we need. When it was explained there would be 4 adults and room for two prams the waitress looked disgusted and barely checked before telling us they couldn’t accommodate us. The restaurant was empty and there was ample room for prams around all tables. The attitude of this member of stuff is always disgraceful, and everything seems to be too much of an ask. We’ve been to The Peddler numerous times and we will not be returning which is a shame as one person has ruined the reputation. Nearly £100 spent elsewhere.
