If you are after affortable, clean, well kept rooms with good food and extremely friendly staff then this is a great place for you. I have stayed here several times now and this is my goto place in the area.

We had booked a hotel in millom and we called in the bear for some food, really dissapointed the chicken burger breast was tough the chips where soggy but hard in the middle, as this was the only pub near the hotel we decided not to stay as didn't want to go back to the pub, inside looks like a cafe , millom is also run down town.

Popped in for a coffee and ended up with coffee and wine! Good service and just what we needed at the time!

We only came in for a few drinks after a walk around Borwick rails . Quite a large pub with a few ales on the pumbs it also sells food with a varied menu the pubs itself is a stones throw away from the train station and the theatre

Great place, food, drink and staff

We stopped in for dinner whilst staying just outside Millom. We had zero expectations and we were all impressed with the food. Nice portion sizes and flavours and quick service, next time we're in town we'd also spend some time in the sports bar area too. Nice place, recommend this highly if you're in Millom.

For our 10 years together we thought about going out to try the local eateries. The bear in the square was in millom not for from where we were staying. The lay out was good, we sat in the restaurant part and bar wa split between our part and the main bar. The food was really nice, both of us got burgers with chips and coleslaw. Inhad the soup of the day which was French onion and my wife had halloumi fries. Good sizes and good prices. The food arrived fast and it was nice and hot and fresh. Nice pub and nice food

The Bear On The Square in Millom is a great place to watch the EM 2024 games! The atmosphere is lively, and the large screens provide a great view of the action. The food and drinks are good, though service can be a bit slow when it's busy. Overall, a fun spot for sports fans. Four stars!

In Millom for 4 nights. Had tried other food options first 3 nights sort of unsure about pub from outside. But all good, very friendly people, and the food was great. Had special, hoisin chicken stir-fry

Was in the so called family pub which was nothing like that there was the chef sniffed out if his head they had to shut early because most the staff were smashed there was remnants of white powder in the baby changing area on the changing matt of all places i think this place needs to have a visit from the police

Had a meal with the family and we all ordered different items, from burger, pasta, fish n chips, n the the specials All the food was excellent, service was brilliant and there were no problems We all commented on the tastiness of the food and would certainly recommend it

Nice spacious room, but took a while to warm up. Friendly staff who came to see if we needed anything further( toilet rolls, milk etc.) Only fault I had was on the website it said soundproofed room but our room was above pub entrance I could hear customers going out for a cigarette also other residents coming upstairs and along the corridor. I could also hear the church clock chiming through the night, saying that I slept through it on the second night.

Great pub, great food, great staff! Don't be put off by the building, once inside Sue and Tracy are behind the bar with Dan the chef preparing lovely food and Tania bringing it to your table. Very good value as well. We were pleasantly surprised and once again relearned not to judge a book by its cover. Will happily use again.

Had a lovely meal, of fish and chips, with mushy peas, and a pint. Would go back again. Lovely friendly staff. Happy days. 😊

Called in for lunch as was dog friendly while we were out walking from Haverigg. Had chef special sausage curry and carbonara, followed by sticky toffee pudding and a latte. Fodd was fantastic value for money and a great choice. Staff really friendly and welcoming. We will be back next time we return to the area

Absolutely awful, steak dry, mushrooms greasy, did not ear chips as disgusting. Had to wait ages for a member of staff to serve me behind bar. The lady that served the meal was lovely. Would not return

Fun room out the back. With pool tables, jukebox claw machine and dogs welcome but don't eat the food! It's soo greasy and clearly the oil is never changed. My fish batter and chips were basically black.

Great full english breakfast and cappuccino. Dogs welcome, 2 large rooms one dining area, the other has jukebox and pool table. Good prices, small row of shops out front with post office over the road.

The Bear On The Square Millom Total shambles 868054191 Phoned to see if they were serving food, told yes till 8pm, walked up ordered drinks, looked at menu, went to the bar to order food just as the chef spat his dummy out, after a barny with his x partner, came to the bar and said no more food orders !!!! What a complete and utter muppet !!! He needs to grow a pair and do the job he's paid to do !! This is the 2nd time we've experienced this, we will never set foot in the place again and I recommend others to boycott it too !!!

It was nicebthey allowed dogs in ,nice beer and friend staff but the food would have been nice if it weren't to salty not very nice.

With very few eating options in Millom we gave this pub a go. It’s very basic but the beer was fine, the staff were friendly enough and at £5.50 for decent fish and chips, what’s not to like!

One of only 2 pubs in Millom that is open every day and the only one that does food every day except Wednesdays. Great food and big portions, lunch times and evenings, but not late. Good real ales and fair prices.

Stayed in Millom and wanted a quick pub meal. Good variety on the menu with an offer of a free desert (albeit a limited choice) . Food a bit overpriced for what it was. I ordered a burger which arrived on a massive stack. BUT it was mostly giant onion rings. And the burger tasted like a frozen burger. But staff were friendly and attentive. The pub was quiet, just a couple of students in. Wouldn't rule out going again if we were in the area.

I must say this place is a gem absolutely beautiful food and friendly pub , definitely go back there again when we stay in town

Called in for Sunday lunch, after a mix up with orders the manager apologised and went out of his way to rectify😊 really enjoyed the food would definitely call again.

I found this to be a friendly hotel, located right in the centre of Millom. As a single person, I was given a large, spacious en-suite room, which had a decent TV. The hotel has a pub and they also serve meals. The staff were friendly and helpful and allowed for me to leave my luggage on my last day so that I could go for a walk. There's nothing fancy here, the decor is perhaps a little dreary, but it did the job just fine. One thing to note is that it is not possible to get breakfast here, as the premises does not open until 1200. Also, last orders for evening meals was at 1900.

Stayed at this basic hotel for two nights. The room was clean and adequate. Tea and coffee facilities were available and replenished for the second night. Actual room faced the front and despite double glazing, the road could be heard quite loudly. Walls are very thin, hearing other guests, tv, snoring, talking and banging doors. Wouldn't stay here again or recommend to others. Didn't have any food here, so can't leave a comment.

I cannot comment on the food or bar service having not sampled but having just returned from an overnight stay at what at best can be described as a (very) rough and ready establishment truly shocked at the prices being charged for a basic room in a basic establishment with no breakfast. If it had been "4 in a bed" I doubt that anyone could have justified paying even half the asking price. By way of one example the horribly damp damaged ceiling in the room was acknowledged with a cheery acceptance and confirmation that they had had two leeks and hadn't got round to redecorating yet! I cannot believe the Bear ever has any repeat business. They need to seriously think about what they are providing at the price point they seek.

Stopped in for lunch after a stressful day shopping. Nice food and helpful,covid aware staff. Drink section was good but not great, not sure if thats a space issue or a choice. Did enjoy an old rosie though. Place lacked atmosphere but we were there early and it might be better with a few extra people later in the day. Will return.

Based myself In Millom for the weekend. Choose this place to eat on Saturday evening. Went just before 19:30. Covid 19 wise everything in place. People in front of me had a room upstairs and were inquiring if they did breakfast only to find they didn’t. It was my turn. Table for one please. For drinks yes and food. Oh we stop food at 18:30. I was dumb founded. I’d stay well clear of here.

We went in on a Monday early evening. No food available. Drinks were fine, atmosphere wasn't great, not very welcoming, we felt like we were intruding in a locals pub.

service is always good, food the same, don't let the exterior put you off, nice and warm and friendly local bar. dogs welcome

Decidimos probar aquí para tomar el té después de leer algunas buenas críticas, sin embargo, cuando entramos por primera vez en el lugar no olía atractivo. Decidimos tomar unas copas mientras miramos los menús y la mujer detrás del bar se mostró grosera cuando estábamos a medio pago y se dio la vuelta y comenzó a conversar con su amiga, sintió que había sido un inconveniente haber estado allí. Ni siquiera podíamos terminar nuestras bebidas, las coca cola sabían aguadas y planas. La comida parecía cara a casi 10 para un hot dog. Ni siquiera queríamos probarlo después de que no pudimos terminar nuestras bebidas. Decepcionante después de leer buenas críticas.

Popped in for a quick lunch on our way to stay in a local cottage. Was unsure on appearance but staff were very friendly and helpful, allowing a member of our party to try their real ales before picking one. Food was very tasty and all obviously freshly made (especially loved the skin on chips!).Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a pub lunch with a relaxed atmosphere

Absolutely awful experience!! Will never be eating in there again! Food took so long to come out then when it did the order was wrong sent it back came back still wrong and things missing but by this time I just couldn’t be bothered to argue anymore. Tables next to us had the same awful experience. Avoid and don’t waste your money

Cuando nos alojamos en el Bear on The Square (las habitaciones también son excelentes) comimos y bebimos dos veces durante nuestra estancia. Cenamos pollo a la hamburguesa y gambas, ambos deliciosos con papas fritas y ensalada. Regado con un poco de cerveza y cerveza, que también eran geniales. Al día siguiente almorzamos paninis y ensalada, nuevamente muy agradable y café, que fue excelente. Sería una comida de buena calidad, sabrosa y asequible que lo mantendrá activo, no podría pedir más.

¿Donde empezar? Las mesas eran horteras y había varias moscas. La comida estaba muy bien presentada pero no comestible. Muy grasiento y sorprendentemente, dado que el personal recolectó en su mayoría platos completos de la mayoría de nuestra gran fiesta, no pareció molestarlos. Champiñones al ajo sin ajo, macarrones con queso con queso cuestionable, papas fritas tan grasosas que incluso los niños no comieron, hamburguesa de filete de pollo seco, la lista continúa. Es una pena.

Uno de los pocos que encontramos para acomodar perros. (Lado positivo) . Tracey, el gerente, fue muy educado y acogedor, y el servicio fue decente, hasta que se fue. Esperamos una hora y media por un entrante. Nada que hacer para los niños. Comida terriblemente grasienta. Mi salchicha tenía pedazos quemados en escamas, lo que significa que la sartén no se limpió entre la cocción y podría estar contaminada de forma cruzada con algo en una posible alergia alimentaria. No nos quedamos para nuestro postre preordenado ya que los niños estaban bastante inquietos y no tenían nada que hacer. Es una lástima que cuando el gerente dejó el servicio se desaceleró. La camarera fue vista lamiendo una envoltura de pastel de cumpleaños y sin lavarse las manos antes de entregarla. Tantas pequeñas cosas que han decepcionado a este lugar potencialmente encantador.

Have eaten here on a number of occasions and always been pleased with both the food and service and the friendly staff.

The place is covered in flies, we are sat here after being here for over an hour. Are group has all eaten at different times, they are doing it meal by meal. Ridiculous. I ordered a sausage muffin. £3.75 for a tiny muffin and only 1 small sausage. When it finally came over, I couldn't eat it. It was like rubber. I ended up giving it the dog but she even struggled. Avoid avoid avoid

Got to say, the woman behind the bar was a tad abrupt! That saud, the menu is varied and the food really, really nice. We had steak and ale pie, burger and salmon - all home-cooked and clean plates all round. Parking right outside. Great value.

Stopped over for a drink. As a Pub, it was ok but we just didn't have the welcoming feeling when we walked in.

Nos detuvimos en este pub de camino a Haverigg. La entrada principal conduce a un encantador restaurante con un bar, muchas mesas y una cálida bienvenida por parte del barman. Pedimos nuestra comida y había fútbol en la zona del bar, preguntamos si podíamos ir temprano a nuestra comida y ver la televisión. Pasamos por una puerta y fue casi como si hubiéramos entrado en un pub diferente, había mucha gente aquí que nos hizo sentir muy bienvenidos.

We called in a few years ago whilst working in the area and enjoyed the food enough to call back a few more times this time the pub was a lot quieter and the food was nowhere near the standard of our last visit

LOVELY ATMOSPHERE food first night was lovely our party of 4 returned the following night and the food was terrible mainly due to the dirty cooking oil not being changed often enough WE WILL NOT RETURN

Visited Haverigg for a few days and walked over to Millom. Was directed to The Bear on the Square by a local couple. Glad they did we had Sunday Dinner which was quality for the price 3 courses for 11.95. Pub was a little tired in decor but staff made up for this They were very friendly and the service was great Would definitely visit again !!

We called in after having been for a walk round the coast. The food was really good (I had a huge hotdog and my wife had the fish and chips) and there was a good number of beers on draught. Would definitely recommend if you need to grab a bite to eat! All of the staff were also really friendly :)

On first impressions i walked in and was ready to walk straight back out first impressions and all.... but wow what a shock. Food was to die for, service top notch couldnt recommend highly. Would recommend all day long excellent value for money too. Keep up the good work ❤

I thought this would be run of the mill pub fayre and I was wrong.

We ordered 6 meals and 1 was the wrong food, all the meat served was perfect but the chips were not. They were not like our previous visit, we expected home made. Also a smile goes a long way. Sorry.

Good spotlessly clean bedrooms and shower room/toilet. Very friendly and helpful staff and good quality pub grub at reasonable cost. Excellent breakfasts to set you up for the day. Easy parking in square.

Called in for breakfast asked if they do breakfast the lady said yes so we sat at a table waiting to be served and was totally ignored. Not even acknowledged to say be with you shortly. After 10 minutes we just got up and left. So rude and no need. Luckily we went back to herdwicks where we had been for evening meal. (See reviews) a totally amazing place and very FRIENDLY!!

We went in here this morning for breakfast. Menus offer full or half size we ordered half expected it to be small very surprised well worth it and very enjoyable.

We went to celebrate a family birthday at this pub and although just a normal run of the mill pub, the food was lovely. The menu has a good range of choices, it's a nice atmosphere and the food well cooked, presented and served.

Buena variedad de comida de pub, bien preparada y servida. Excelente gama de cervezas, bien cuidado y cambian de forma periódica, así que siempre hay algo nuevo que probar, normalmente el local de Cumbria cervezas. El ambiente es relajado y acogedor, aunque la decoración le vendría bien una puesta al día.

Tenía un agradable almuerzo almuerzo en un pub con una buena variedad de ale para elegir. El personal es muy simpático y te dejan probar la cerveza antes de pedir una pinta. Perros bienvenido también

Fairly standard menu but food was tasty and freshly cooked. Staff very friendly and when we said we had a train to catch they ensured food was promptly served.

Visited with partner and friend and we had. Lovely meal. It tasted like the food was home made an plenty off it. The service was good and we were allowed to make minor changes to the dishes we were having. We will go back as everything was good.

We had delicious fish'n'chips at the Bear on the Square. The food was excellent and freshly prepared, they have delicious local beer on tap and the service was friendly and welcoming. I was travelling with my mother and we both agreed it was an absolute joy to eat in such a lovely pub. I would go back to Millom just to eat there. Thank you!

We stopped here for lunch on a walk from the nearby caravan park. Not a lot of choice in Millom and we had our 2 dogs with us so thought we would have a look, cheap drinks and food. Another table ordered and the food looked nice so we ordered-3 had different types of burgers and one the Cumberland sausage. All lovely meals-served hot and very tasty. Friendly staff. Place is a bit dated-reminded me of a social club or British legion. Could do with sprucing up. If back I would go for lunch again but it wouldn't be somewhere I would be excited to return to-lots of other pubs in the local area to drive out to which are more prettier looking/oldie worldie.
