I'm not from the area but when I'm visiting, I often make a bee-line for this place as a treat. It's quite pricey and portions aren't huge but the chips are possibly the best I've ever had. Delicious again on a recent visit. Great stuff.

Used to go here years ago and I would swear by it every time just as I did today. Big mistake. Should have noted the place was empty when my girlfriend and I went in. Now I know why. Ordered fish and chips and scampi and chips with a pot of tea for two. Amiable enough blonde (no hairnet) lady took our order and we found a table in the corner. Cups were brought and then a pot of tea which needed quickly refilling. Table and dinner mats needed a wipe but cups and plates were just placed there. Food arrived too quickly, was greasy, dark and tasted of old oil. Couldn’t finish. Toilet hasn’t been cleaned in an age, detritus on the pan, black ring on the water level. Soap watered down. £17+ for that. That will be our last visit.

We went here for lunch today. Lovely food - my partner had fish and chips with a lovely batter on. The chips were lovely and my scampi was lovely, tender and beautifully breadcrumbed. They also allow dogs inside which is a big bonus on a wet day like today!

Stopped off at Whitehaven, as we were on our way home from Scotland. Called into Arrighs fish & chips. Very friendly customer service, we wanted teacake with our fish and chips but they had all gone. We were offered bread, which wasn't an issue as we like bread too, we were given 6 slices. The fish was cooked fresh and the chips are amazing, chunky and well cooked, just how we like them. The restaurant was absolutely spotless. I would highly recommend a visit to this restaurant, we couldn't of asked for a better service. Annmarie Barber & Russell Shepherd

WATCH OUT! False deceptive pricing! They advertise fish prices making you think that's the price for fish and chips like every other chippy in the UK but you will be in for a surprise when you get the bill, chips not including. The oil they used was old and left me feeling sick.

Smelt lovely from outside sadly once we got them opened the chips looked burnt and batter on fish was soggy went straight into the bin. It's a shame as it's been there a long time previous reviews said it looked like old oil! I agree it didn't look light and crispy as what fish should look like and for £6.40 it's not even fit for the seagulls. The management either don't read reviews or just don't care and wait for the next tourist to come in.

Such a shame. They appear to have an aversion to changing the cooking oil. Hence all food appears brown and burnt. The chips are hand cut and would be top notch if not for the appearance, likewise the fish, great quality...cooked in nasty oil. Mushy peas lovely. Tartare sauce requested...served mayonnaise! No bread and butter available so given a roll and spread. The lady serving/cooking was very nice but this place needs an update on both menu (no veggie options in this day and age is a bit sad) and cooking methods. It's a lovely old building with a lot of charm and character. Just needs a few tweaks....and I hope they happen soon or they may go the way of all other businesses that don't recognise their easily fixable failings.

We decided to visit Arrighi’s as we were in the mood for a chippy lunch whilst in Whitehaven, and, given the big dog-friendly sign outside, we chose to eat in with our dog. I tried to order a cheese and onion pie, but it was unavailable, so we both ordered fish and chips with a pot of gravy to share. The gravy never arrived (I have no idea if we paid for it) and there were a couple of bones in the fish, but every now and again that’s understandable. The batter was very dark and not like any I’ve had before, but it was relatively light and the fish tasty, as were the hand-cut chips. There was only one person serving and cooking by the looks of it, so it took a while to attract their attention when dealing with customers at the counter, but she was very friendly, especially with our dog. The whole meal plus two cans came to just over £20. I paid in cash as I wasn’t sure if cards were accepted, and we wanted to go somewhere. In the end it was an okay meal and okay value. We wouldn’t go back, but if we did we would probably have no major complaints.

Arrighis is a disappointing establishment selling chips and various accompaniments. Beer is served. There is indoor seating at 6 tables (2 of which are by the counters for take-away and feel cramped and very overlooked). Chips were dripping in oil - luckily we had serviettes to mop up the excess oil. Fish was meagre. Cost at £6.20 was pricey for what we were given. Curry sauce is good - ask for it in a jug not poured over the chips. Sadly, this was the most popular place in town, which doesn't say much for the other places! The lady was on her own and rushed off her feet, but coped well with everyone's orders. Felt rather sorry for her.

Having not been to Whitehaven before I googled a place to eat and found this "seafood restaurant". It sounded promising. We ate inside and although the service was polite and friendly and food was freshly cooked, it was spoiled by the dirty cutlery and glasses. The glasses had splashes smeared down them and the knives also. One fork had something black stuck to the prong, so I asked for it to be changed. Some chips were hard inside and the fat they were cooked in made them taste a little strange. All in all this was a disappointing meal and did not meet expected standards.

Had to wait as it is cooked fresh on the spot and it took a while to get it all done for the 8 of us. I'm not a fan of fish and chips in general as I don't really like the greasy batter, and the fish is often overcooked, but I get it that it's appropriate as takeaway for a couple of families out on a coast walk. This had refreshingly minimal batter and was cooked to perfection. They ladies were funny and friendly. A great experience.

Visited here on a rather bleak Saturday afternoon when the restaurant was deserted. A warm welcome from the two ladies behind the counter and they quickly found us a seat. I ordered fish and chips and watched while a fresh piece of fish was lightly battered and placed in the fryer, it was served piping hot and tasted sublime. My friend who is vegetarian didn't fancy the veggie option on the daytime menu, quick as a flash the owner asked if he would like to try the vegetarian special from the evening menu, a sublime risotto which he thought was stunning, and up there with some of the best veggie stuff he had tasted. Great friendly service that wasn't intrusive plus hot Vimto which I haven't had for ages Must admit I've read some of the more derogatory reviews on here with interest - it's almost as if the reviewers have visited a different venue or are reviewing based on the restaurant owners other interests - who knows ? Anyway - a faultless experience today - thoroughly enjoyed it and will return soon

Having decided to spend the last day of our family holiday in Whitehaven, it was a given we would have fish and chips for lunch. Despite it being a lovely hot day, we decided it'd be best to eat inside so we weren't at the mercy of the gulls circling overhead! The lady in Arrighi's was lovely - very funny and friendly. She diplomatically corrected our mispronunciation of Lamplugh - us Southerners had thought it Lamp-loo rather than Lamp-la! She even managed to rustle up a risotto (off menu) for my vegetarian uncle.I had the Cumberland sausage and mash which was delicious, and the chip or two I 'borrowed' from my mum's plate tasted good too.Two thumbs up, or maybe that should be sixteen thumbs up as there were 8 of us!

Visited Arrighi's seafood restaurant on a bleak Monday between Christmas and New Year being enticed in strangely not by sea food but by the daily special of Home Made Meat and Potato Pie, Chips, Peas and Gravy for the remarkable price of less than a fiver. There was a warm feel to the restaurant with customers seeming to be enjoying the food. We were served by the owner who was lovely - welcoming and friendly - a really nice change. I didn't take any persuading at all to have the special of the day which was served promptly and was absolutely outstanding.A slice of Meat and Potato Pie that took me back to Childhood and reminded me of the one my grandma used to make us as kids, it was served with freshly cooked home made chips, mushy peas and gravy and was one of the best meals I have had in Whitehaven in a long time. I noticed that they also have a speciality seafood restaurant as well and studied the menu and was almost tempted by the sea food platter which looked good as well. Back at the B&B we looked at the reviews and the alarm bells started to ring.Anyway the service and atmosphere when we arrived was fantastic we were offered some lovely whitebait and tartar sauce in the comfortable anti-room. We both choose the scallops and haggis for starters and the hot sea food medley for main. We were taken in the main dining room which was beautiful absolutely perfect. The service is perfect. The food duly and the problems started. The scallops were tiny 7-8 scallops 20p sized (frozen not fresh?) and my haggis had been burnt on side I couldn’t even cut it was so hard, the cream sauce was nice. The main was even worse and I may not have read the menu properly on this one and didn’t realise everything was in breadcrumbs. A large plate full of breaded seafood including the tiny scallops again. Straight from the frozen bag into the deep fat fryer. The chips, advertised as 3 times fried were soggy. The dips were OK but the amount of crispy breadcrumbs was just OTT. Half way through I started to leave the breadcrumb coating and just eat the insides. I couldn’t believe the owners could serve such a large amount of bog standard deep fried frozen food in a bistro and ask people to pay full price. Our bill with 3 glass of wine (£3.95 each) came to £55Owners – Please use fresh not frozen food and please, please take the above off your menu. As mentioned your bistro has huge potential. Location, atmosphere, décor and service but the food……..

Terrible , over priced and food was rubbish ! paid over £100 for 4 people (2 course ) . The so called fresh fish was either frozen or tinned ! The meal was tasteless , would never recommended and never visit again . To be honest they need to give up advertising that they are a seafood restaurant,

Called into Arrighi's on the off chance of a breakfast ( I was a bit early). I was met by a nice lady who was very helpful. The place had not opened at that point but she was very nice about it and made me a breakfast of Bacon, Egg, Beans, Sausage and toast. It was good value and I enjoyed it. I will go back to eat when the place is fully open as I am sure that it will be good. I have eaten in the seafood restraint upstairs, some time ago and that was good but have not been in for a while, since. I like the deco in there; they have pictures of old Whitehaven on the walls with little descriptions of what/who they are.Nice place, good value, very friendly, will return.

This is a relatively new and yet to be established restaurant that epitomises the often clichéd phrase, ‘It has potential’. Even though there are a number of ‘hoops-to-jumpy’ through – it is tucked away in the corner of a market area, it has a history as a reputed ‘fish-and-chippy’, with a transition route through the establishment that alludes to a continuation of the original business and there is no obvious marketing to raise awareness – it does nevertheless have many attributes that could eventually meet qualification as a much sought after eatery. The décor and the furnishings of the upstairs restaurant set the scene for candle-lit ambiance; however, on the Friday night of our visit the two of us dined alone as a late cancellation for a party of 12 meant we were deprived the people pre-requisite to complete the formula. Nevertheless, with a small reception area and an equally tastefully decorated dining room, it is not difficult to imagine this as a more than suitable backdrop for enjoyable and regular parties. We were greeted in a friendly, but courteous manner and given sample, ‘on-the-house’ langoustines on arrival (these were supplied by an ‘out-of-town’ fishmonger touting for business, but it was agreed they fell short of the standards being set by the proprietor). A simple al la carte menu is supported by a small specials board and a more than considerable selection of wines. The emphasis is on fish of all types, but steak is also an option.Food actually chosen comprised fresh bread with oil/balsamic vinegar dip; king prawns and scallops with haggis for starters; sea bass with crayfish and a cod, prawns, scallop mix with spaghetti for the main courses; one lemon based dessert; an espresso with ‘brandy’(?), hmm, it was, in fact, Laphroaig, a very respectful malt whisky! However – there were some ‘issues’: Wine prices are OTT, menu is confusing, vegetables selection – say no more? – but most disconcerting was the lingering odour on clothing in the morning, can you guess what it was?

We had a really lovely fish and chip meal here in the reastaurant, however we thought we would have a takeaway as we only live round the corner; could not have been more disappointing. The whole meal tasted as though it had been cooked on burnt oil, not a nice taste. Staff are lovely but unfortunately we will not go back

A group of us from Liverpool were spending the weekend at St. Bees. We visited Whitehaven on a miserable Sunday afternoon, We went into Arrighi's wet and left with smiles on our faces having had a great meal and made new friends with the staff especially Denise. We will go there again when we return to the area next year.

Great fish and chip cafe and we were served by very nice staff. The locals stop by for a chat and it is that sort of place .... has a very friendly atmosphere. It wasnt the best fish and chips that I have ever had but certainly very acceptable. I am not a hygiene freak but the toilets could do with a better clean - these would certainly put some people off but not me.

I visited in a Sunday afternoon with my partner and his daughter and had a lovely time. The staff were lovely and went the extra mile. They had ran out of a certain meal and went out of their way to make more from scratch, this made me feel like my custom mattered. They made extra effort for our child, every time she dropped her cutlery they were there with a clean set and to pick the soiled set up. The ladies in that day were amazing and provided me with probably some of the best customer service I've ever received.

Me and the family went to Arrighi's, I got sausage and chips whilst everyone else got fish and chips. We took our meals to the harbour and we sat overlooking the water. We started to eat our meal, suddenly my youngest exclaimed "it's like I've died and gone to heaven!", everyone agreed with him - the food was delicious. Now we all can't wait to go back!

I booked a table at this restaurant through recommendation from other people. It is situated in the middle of Whitehaven and easy to find.On entering the greeting received was most welcome, reminiscent of what used to be, genuine smiles combined with an aura of feeling valued. A very pleasant change in this day and age.Up the stairs to a room (commonly called waiting-areas these days) that is superb in its decor and setting. A professionally painted mural on the walls worthy of the old masters, set the tone of the evening. A mix of furniture in this room that has been well thought out, traditional style and modern style, of complimentary combination. Drinks and perusal of the menu, no rush, no bustle, no sense of 'hurry up'. Orders given with advice on how long it would take because, everything is cooked to order - I mention this because sometimes even in four star restaurants, you can almost hear the 'ping' of the microwave. What a very pleasant change. On asking, the sourcing of the food was given: all local and bought on the day (this was proven in the quality and freshness of what was chosen from the comprehensive, extensive menu). After what seemed to be not a long time at all because the surroundings were so relaxing, off to the main dining area. On entering, again, the decor was first class, well thought out and balanced in such a way the charm of this area with its subdued lighting wafted the words, 'relax and enjoy'.Starters of Oysters with crushed ice and lemon Rockefeller, spinach with Mornay sauce. Ist. class, well presented again with a very relaxing ambience.Coquiles Saint Jacques, Scallops, base of mashed potatoes with garlic wine, grilled with parmesan. Superb.Salmon fillet with all the acoutrements. Strongly recommended. After a suitable time lapse, Lemon creme brulee, recommended, again.Take a look at the photos of old Whitehaven, ask the owner to explain some of the photos, yes, old fashioned service not very evident these days.I have never given 5 out of 5 to any place visited before, however, first time for everything. This place is 5 out of 5.Well done. I will be returning. To be assured of the experience I advise booking, I know I will.

Being a dog owner who enjoys to take the dog with me when I can, I appreciate finding establishments that allow my dog on the premises, particularly if they are just as welcoming to dogs as they are to people. Combining a small shopping trip with a walk on the beach in Whitehaven with the dog, followed by a nice meal at Arrighi's makes for a pleasant outing. They have a small well behaved dog customer side, which is friendly and playful with my dog and I know my dog enjoys the visit as much as I do.This is why I choose to frequent Arrighi's. It has a small establishment downstairs for dining in and a small terrace for outdoor dining and there are more tables upstairs. They have a customer toilet facility upstairs, which is well kept.I have used the downstairs dining area, which also serves takeaway food. The owner is welcoming, the food is good value and they serve a nice cup of tea too.I have not tried their evening restaurant upstairs but I look forward to doing so, if the food and welcome I receive downstairs is an indication of what they offer in their evening restaurant.

First visit to Arrighi's Seafood Bistro.Had a very nice welcome. We are fortunate that the weather is still good as we chose to sit outside at the small 'patio' area. It is quite a small area but very pleasant in the evening sunshine. We provided with a 'taster' dish of Whitebait in batter and a bowl of green olives. Both were enjoyable. There was enough whitebait for a starter meal for both of us and the olives were a generous portion. We had a chat with the owners before moving upatairs to the lovely little 'Italian Room' that is decorated by a hand painted work of art around the room. We were told that this was hand painted by two people and it took two weeks for them to complete it. It is a very nice little room to relax, have a drink and a chat and a look at all the old black and white photographs of some of the owners family including grand parents. The dining room next door is very tastefully done and it is refreshing to see the obvious pride that the owner has in this building, the character of a very old building has been maintained. Our starters consisted of Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese Canapes with a dressed salad and mini Prawn Cocktail, Pan fried Scallops with mashed potato and white wine sauce with Parmesan, served in a shell. Scallops were cooked to perfection and finished off under the grill. The mash was excellent. We shared some of the other starter and it was very nice.Mains were Fish stew consisting of seasonal fish in a rich tomato and Tarragon sauce With noodles. Not sure about the noodles, I think that the stew is delicious as it is and I feel a nice touch would perhaps have been serving it with Ciabatta with Garlic Butter or similar instead of the noodles?Other main was Rib-eye Steak with onion rings and fries ,Salad and roasted tomato with Pesto cooked very well and a really nice piece of steak it was, too.Overall Wine selection was very good.We feel that we had value for money and a very nice evening with good food. The seafood Bistro does not take 'walk in' customers so booking is a must. It is a intimate place with seating for around fourteen people and this gives it a very nice atmosphere. Service was very friendly and good.We will definitely return for another good meal and good wines.

Not great. Toastie was only just acceptable. Table and chairs really need to be clean. Usually Costa is reliable and snacks eg. toasties are lovely. Not so at this one. Sadly.

The Bridge cafe in Millom has a sign advising that it has temporarily closed down. To be honest, having looked through the window it doesn’t look as though it’s likely to reopen anytime soon. The Trackside on the station is a fantastic alternative.

Unfortunately yet again The Peddler has been let down by the same rude member of staff that we have dealt with a few times. We were greeted by this lady shouting from across the room asking how many seats we need. When it was explained there would be 4 adults and room for two prams the waitress looked disgusted and barely checked before telling us they couldn’t accommodate us. The restaurant was empty and there was ample room for prams around all tables. The attitude of this member of stuff is always disgraceful, and everything seems to be too much of an ask. We’ve been to The Peddler numerous times and we will not be returning which is a shame as one person has ruined the reputation. Nearly £100 spent elsewhere.
