Dog and Gun in Hambleton

We called on spec today for a quick lunch prior to visiting friends in the area. The welcome was friendly. Staff and customers were most welcoming to our two little dogs. How nice this was. The food was most acceptable . Decent-sized portions and a lovely selection of seasonal vegetables. Pity not all pubs are so accommodating.

Went on Monday 10th April, greeted with just a hello (no smiles) as there was a notice on window saying food served daily we thought we would have a bit of dinner on asking who we thought was the proprietor if we could order food he abruptly said we don’t serve food on a Monday. So we decide to go somewhere else and told the proprietor that we would return tomorrow for dinner. We returned the evening after and as usual just greeted with a hello we sat done the waitress came over to ask if we where staying to dine answering her with a yes she then took our drinks order and brought us menus. We browsed through the menus and decide what we would like to eat. The waitress then came to take our order and when telling her what we would like she THEN advised that half of the food on the menu they they hadn’t got. When I personally ask for chicken salad with sweetcorn she scurried away to ask the chef if he could do a chicken salad with sweetcorn she then returned and said NO he can’t do that. So we decided we would go elsewhere. We will NOT be returning there again. the waitress should have informed us as we entered the dog and gun that half the menu was unavailable before taking our drinks order. It seemed to us that they were only interested in locals and not guests. So therefore that is why we have give a one star ( terrible ) WE WILL NOT BE RETURNING ANY TIME SOON !!

I will only give constructive criticism. We went as a large party and pre ordered our meals. I myself ordered pate the pate was tasteless and came with 3 small triangles of a loaf crust when asking for more we were told they had ran out of bread. When my main arrived the salmon was very dry the noodles were inedible. My partner had chicken which was also very dry we asked for extra coleslaw to be told no we couldn’t have any. Another member had rare/medium steak the steak was burnt and over well. When voicing our concerns over the food the waitress just walked away. My meal went back as it came and I wasn’t asked why the meal hadn’t been eaten. I would not return and wouldn’t recommend

Fancy great homemade food... this is the place. Very welcoming, dog friendly, great service and exceptional great food. Will definitely be back.

Despite ordering and paying well in advance (like over a week in advance) our friend annual.get together was spoilt by awfully long waits for the same courses to arrive. Everything seemed to give the impression in was done shoddily and to maximise profit and nothing else. No condiments were on the table and had to be asked for. Things "ran out" and lame excuses were given why certain things, again well pre ordered were no longer available. "Custard" ran out. My substitute sticky toffee pudding costing £6 looked like a 99p microwaved one with one scoop of the cheapest ice cream. My partners main course pie was again awful. There were nearly 30 of us (they wanted to charge extra for the room) on what would have been a very quiet Saturday night in early March. Won't ever be darkening their doors again and would never recommend. Avoid.

We booked for a large family group to have dinner whilst on holiday at the local lodges. We cannot fault the staff for their service and how personal they made this event. For a large group, the food was perfect, hot and tasty! The staff accommodated the children and were relaxed with my crazy loud family! Not only this being able to play pool and darts whilst the owners got us out a microphone for some karaoke (which they quickly joined us doing) and allowed us to choose our music was a highlight for all of us. We will definitely be returning on our next holiday and recommend this to anyone looking for a relaxed fun night!

Myself and my partner went to a nearly lodge park for a little getaway and went to this Pub on 2 occasions during our stay. The food was incredible and the service was so personable. Every staff member was amazing, highly recommend!

We booked for Sunday lunch which was lovely, I had the vegetarian option and my partner had lamb, both meals were well portioned and absolutely delicious. We stayed to watch the football and chatted to staff team who were friendly and welcoming. We were staying at the lodges down the toad, so decided to return as we enjoyed it so much. On the 2nd visit I had the beer battered cider and my partner had the homemade burger, again the food was absolutely delicious. I would definitely highky recommend this lovely local pub for food and drinks...x

What a beautiful pub! From the minute we walked in the door we were made to feel welcome by the Landlord and Landlady. We booked two nights at the nearby Woodland Lakes Lodges and decided on day number two to try this place out and it did not disappoint! Beautiful pint of Guinness and amazing food. The garlic mushrooms and pate were so tasty and by no means small portions. And the home made chips and onion rings, well they were just something else! Sea bass for mains from the specials, major compliments to the chef. We enjoyed it so much, we had a Sunday lunch before we headed off home the next day. We had big expectations for it and again it did not disappoint. Perfect way to end the weekend! Thank you so much for having us and we will definitely be back again!

Terry and Lesley are very welcoming, the food is very good and good portions. We’ve been here a few times and every time made to feel welcome. We moved to Carlton miniott recently and came into the pub to check it out, terry and Lesley spent time talking to us and made us feel welcome and settled. Good pint, football on, and good food. Have recommended it to my friends to come for the pub quiz night too!

We stayed at Old Low Mill Farm & Jeff recommended the Dog & Gun. We instantly felt welcomed and “at home”. Sam, Adam and the staff are incredibly friendly & made us feel like one of the locals. Food is delicious - the home made burgers (build your own) are delicious! My husband had a proper pie & our friends that were doing veganuary had so much to choose from! Fantastic menu. We hope to come back soon!

We visited the dog and gun on Thursday 5th jan for a meal at 6pm with 2 familys on a holiday break at woodland lakes lodges. We booked in advanced and was very welcomed by terry and lesley when we arrived. We opened a tab and ordered some drinks. The waiter was so accommodating with our food orders and lesley came up trumps with some gorgeous food. We had a bit of everything of the menu from starters to deserts and all of it was superb. We have kids between ages 1-10 years and soon as the kids had finished the ice cream lesley and terry put on disco lights and some music. We had a right laugh dancing and having fun. Darts and a Pool table also was a nice addition aswell. Would really like to thank Lesley,Terry and the barman and waitress who really made our last night at Thirsk one to remember. The lodges at woodland lakes were a nice little find but the dog and gun definitely were the highlight of our stay. We cant wait to book again for next year just to see lesleys dance moves 🤣 Thanks again, hope you all have an amazing year as you clearly derseve it with the hospitality skills you have. Xx

Called in on the off chance to have a meal. They showed us to a lovely table in the conservatory dining area. It was warm and airy, but I think there should be some smaller tables. The hosts are very warm and welcoming, the food was absolutely fab. I had a Chicken Zinger burger, and it was spicy without blowing my head off. Husband had a cheeseburger and he said it was the best burger he had eaten in a very long time. The home-made chips and coleslaw were the tastiest I have eaten in a long time.

We visited the Dog and Gun last night for my daughters 30th birthday meal. What a lovely place. The staff are amazing and very attentive. They gave my daughter a birthday card and added a candle on her chocolate fudge cake and the staff sang Happy birthday. How lovely! The food is traditional pub grub and is delicious. The home made chips are beautiful. We were staying at Landal Woodland Lakes nearby. I would recommend this place to anyone. It's about 20 minute walk. Thank you so much for the lovely hospitality. We will be back

Used to come here years ago with my dad so decided to have a drive out for Sunday Lunch with my partner! We rang and booked a table in advance, we requested a seat outside and when we arrived we were given one no problem. We ordered food, the starter arrived 5 to 10 minutes after we had sat down which is incredible, ordered the garlic mushrooms and they were unreal! We finished that and then the mains arrived shortly after! Must have ordered and ate both starter and main all within half an hour! The pub is beautiful, the scenery is amazing! Would definitely recommend and will 100% be coming back. Overall a perfect Sunday lunch, friendly staff and can’t wait for the next visit.

My wife and friends and I visited this place over the bank holiday weekend as we were staying 100 yards away in a cottage. We arrived on Friday night to be welcomed by 2 great bar persons who were very attentive. We ordered 4 pints of San Miguel which were poured quickly and expertly and were absolutely crisp and delicious, we all ate ranging from steak and steak and kidney pie and lamb and rosemary pie and the service and food was excellent. The place is very welcoming and really nice. Would definitely go again. Brilliant pub

Had a nice meal when staying in the area, Reasonably priced menu. My wife and I enjoyed the sea bass fillets which were very good and highly recommended. We were there with two children (11 & 6) who both had pata as it was pizza and pasta night. They both opted for carbonara. This came with chicken in it as well as ham so although not traditional was fine. The portion sizes were enormous though and it completely over faced them. (My 11 year old did opt for the adult meal as she eats like an adult) They both said it was nice though, but not their favourite carbonara they have had over the years taste wise. Lovely little place though to enjoy a meal or drink.

We have always had good service and very nice food here. It's not open for food every day, though, so check before going.

Apologies for a poor review, but honestly the food served was pretty dire. Half a chicken that didn't look appetising by its appearance to say the least, this view was compounded when I took a mouthful, very dry and bland. The ball of stuffing that was served with it was dried up and crunchy, the plate of food was served with gravy already swimming around everything, I could go on but you get the picture, didn't complain because of the company I was with. All in all the worst Sunday lunch experience,

We tried this place as our usual Sunday dinner carvery was closed for refurb. So glad we came and we will return! A couple of forgetful moments from our server....oops asking if there was anything else when we had no cutlery or napkins and having to ask for the sauces which should come with the meats...but hey it is not silver service and this quality at this price we were very happy.

While staying in a nearby B and B we enjoyed an evening meal here. It is a lovely pub beautifully renovated: it was quite reasonably priced and very good value

Called in for lunch with partner. Garlic mushrooms excellent and very tasty, burger was huge but nice, partner had sausage and mash and sad to say were very over cooked and over heated. We were delighted with the meals served in this really good pub. The prices are reasonable and the portions super. An excellent place to visit as the staff are very welcoming.

Went on Ladies day with a party of 10, pub was very busy but had a fantastic atmosphere. Our orders were taken dead on the time we booked - we arrived early and were happily welcomed to our table and had drinks (which were extremely reasonable, including the vast selection of gins and fevertree tonics!)

Came across the dog and gun whilst we were staying at the lodges just up the road, our first visit was on PIE NIGHT and WOW! It was absolutely delicious and only a fiver !,,,, we have just been on an overnight stay in Harrogate and decided to make a detour on our way home so we could have lunch at the dog and gun and yet again it was amazing , the staff are so friendly and we managed to tell the chef how much we enjoyed it, we would recommend anyone who is travelling to or passing through carlton miniot to call in to this wonderful pub, we can't wait to return again soon

Food was delicious and reasonably priced. Friendly helpful staff. Rang in advance due to allergies and the chef was welm informed, helpful and had thought through the food in advance which gave us confidence. We will definitely go back.

We visited this pub to watch football and decided to eat too. What a lovely meal we had! The biggest homemade chicken Kiev I’ve ever had and the prices beyond reasonable (with the added bonus of real chips). A real little gem of a place. If you are ever in the area I would totally recommend a visit here

the menu is a bit more than standard pub grub but nothing too challenging. We had Steak & Fries, and the Scampi. Both really well cooked and tasty. Also had the creme brulee cheesecake - it was a lovely creamy consistency but unexpectedly light. All in all well worth the 20 minute walk from the B&B.; And a nice 'digestive' stroll back.

Excellent Sunday lunch, one of the best pub Sunday lunches I’ve ever had. We called in on mother’s day on the off chance they could fit 7 of us in with out booking. To our good fortune they could and was very accommodating and friendly towards us.

It would be very hard to beat this Sunday lunch, I can honestly say it's the best we've had,will definitely be returning. As well as the perfect food the place is lovely as are the staff. 10 out of 10 guys, no where else in or around Thirsk comes close to this one

Well decorated and looked after throughout. Service is friendly and courteous with a deference to strangers or those not local. Comfortable and definitely a place just that one more notch to make it special.

We were looking forward to visiting after the recent refurbishment,but felt more attention needs to be paid to the menu. I ordered a lasagne,which came with salad and garlic bread,so I asked if I could have a portion of chips instead. It arrived with salad,bread AND chips! The lasagne was made up of dry mince and pasta,no tomato or bechamel sauce and a sprinkling of melted rubbery cheese on the top.The waitress obviously didn't listen to my request properly.Will give them time to get their kitchen running ok

Returned for yet another meal with the family and our 2 dogs. Sensibly priced with good quality grub. Staff pleasant and really helpful. Will go again.

Booked here for Christmas Day lunch which I was really looking forward to. however, I was disappointed, not with the service but the food !

After seeing the pub re-opening after refurbishment we had been meaning to go along for quite some time. We have seen the pie nights, curry nights & steak nights advertised, but for various reasons had just never got around to visiting, until last Saturday, when we were hoping for the steak night. I had noticed that the boards outside the pub were no longer advertising the steak nights, so we knew it might not be an option. And we didn't book, despite being a Saturday evening.

We have stayed at the waterside log cabins for the week and wanted to go out for a meal, after reading a few reviews of different places as well as passing the dog and gun a few times we decided on going for a meal there.

We live quite close to the Dog and Gun and decided to go to the pie night last Thursday for the third time. We went for about 7.00pm and it was already packed and they only had one table left. The Dog and Gun has been through some difficult times but it has improved tremendously since it re-opened under new management. The décor is stunning and very tastefully done. The dining room area at the front is beautifully set out with place mats which match the colour scheme and lovely thick dark blue napkins. The high backed chairs give the place a feeling of richness and comfort. We chose chicken and steak and kidney pie. They arrived steaming hot and the meat melted in the mouth. It was served with peas and home made chips. The staff are friendly and polite The cost of pie night is £5 and it is worth every penny. I would advise anyone going to book in advance as this is a very popular place to eat. Well done to all concerned. You have certainly brightened the lives of residents in Carlton Miniott!!!

We were visiting Thirsk for the week, and just by chance found this pub, the first night was so good, that we came back for the rest of the week, every night, very well looked after, delicious food, absolutely spotless, and very friendly staff, we had our little boy with us and they were amazing with him also, very highly recommended from us, we will definitely be returning
