Warm and friendly staff, food fine - but it took over an hour to arrive. Only a handful of other tables having food, so not in any way busy. Bowl of soup was cold in places, clearly microwaved and not stirred.

We came here for an evening meal before a wedding party. The staff were amazing. They were helpful and knew their information on the beers/spirits. It's cosy, dog friendly and has lots of space. I would highly recommend this place for food and drinks when in Penrith.

Our favourite pub/restaurant to visit whenever we're in the Lakes and Penrith is a true gem. It has a warm, cosy atmosphere with a crackling fire, candles softly glowing, and the perfect blend of delicious food, wines, and ales. The music sets a great vibe, and the staff go above and beyond, always friendly and attentive, even providing treats and water for our dog. You absolutely must experience this charming, historic spot—it's the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a memorable meal. Nicola & Scott

We had dinner at Dockray Hall last Thursday night when visiting Penrith. The food, service and atmosphere were amazing. The Fish and Chips were out of this world. Huge portion and very, very good. The service was outstanding. Very nice people. This is a historic place as it is where Richard III used to live at one point in his life. It is a very warm and cozy place. We loved our visit and highly recommend to anyone visiting Penrith.

Just had Sunday lunch in Dockray Hall, after a few years absence, really good food 10/10 compliments to the chef and back to the good old days when it was, and is again, our favourite pub in Penrith for a drink and/or food. Mark from London and all the staff are great too, being so welcoming and chatty, dog friendly in the front half of the pub or meals without dogs in the back half. Can't wait to return.

This is a proper, pub as it should be. It has a great atmosphere. With the real fire roaring away everywhere smelled of wood smoke but in a good way. When I was there there was no food available and to be honest it was great to go to a pub just for a drink and not feel obliged to be buying food. Next time I'm back in Penrith I'll definitely be going back.

It's only just reopened after being closed for a while, so they're just offering drinks. The Bock Easter Ale is amazing, a perfect pint for anyone who likes a ruby beer that's malty. Though the fire was lit, it was pretty cold and I found the music irritating as it was too loud. A definite place to visit if in Penrith.

Brilliant fish n chips with mushy peas. The Thai veggie curry was just perfect mount of spice. Really generous helpings, we split 3 dishes among 4 people. Our server was super kind. Such a thrill to eat in the place also know as King Richard III’s house in the 1400s. Richard III is known as the last of the Plantagenets and his death at Bosworth in 1485 marked the end of the Wars of the Roses Def recommend making a booking.

Visited as part of a pub crawl round Penrith. Really lovely historic building with at least 3 impressive fireplaces.Had a lovely pint of Loweswater Gold. One of my favourite beers. Lovely ambience in what is a very old building, so the decor reflects this. Plenty of comfortable seating in several rooms. Very busy on the night we visited, which often reflects popularity, especially these days when pubs can be empty. Young, very pleasant and accommodating staff. Met up with family for Sunday lunch, mushroom and prawn starter was okay, roast was great, scampi not so much - came without tartare sauce 😱 even though its stated on the menu. Trying to get waitresses attention was a nightmare. Took ages for them to clear our table. We had to ask for dessert menu, girl forgot... It took from getting our menu to ordering desserts 1 whole hour. Chased up the order and it wasn't even ready to come out. Left without dessert. Seems like it could be great if they had staff. Also a lot was missing from the menu. No potatoes on a Sunday roast. Sacrilege. Wouldn't return.

I've thought long and hard about what to say in this review; should it be the whole 'I said, 'she said, 'manager said', 'husband said'....that kind of thing 🤔 Or should I just cut to the chase? I have attempted to keep it short. In all my years on both this side of the bar and the other I have never encountered such appalling customer service as I did on Thursday 28/10. When a customer returns a drink for whatever the reason it kind of makes sense just to replace it because the alternative is to cause a scene in front of customers and create an unnecessary atmosphere. My husband ordered a glass of sauvignon blanc for me. The barmaid then proceeded to 'warn' my husband (her words not mine) that pinot grigio was drier. My husband knowing my preference for a glass of dry bought himself a pint and a glass of sauvignon blanc. It was yellow in colour and it had little bubbles. It didn't taste right and for a dry wine it was decidedly sweet. So my husband returned it. Up came the barmaid with a glass of pinot grigio. And a card payment machine. 'That'll be £6' she said. No please. No thank you. My husband, somewhat puzzled, explained that he'd already paid for it. 'Oh, that was for the other one. The £6 is for this one'. I tried to explain about the other wine but she wasn't interested. She had tried to 'warn' my husband she said. The inference being that as her warning hadn't been heeded it was somehow our fault we'd ended up with a bad glass of wine. Needless to say we weren't going to pay for it. We were happy to take our business elsewhere Unbelievably she said 'well I can't serve you that glass of wine because that would be technically theft'. That's right lass call a couple of pensioners thieves. The landlord was called but by that time I'd had enough and we put on our coats to leave. We'd called in for a quiet drink to be confronted with that attitude and be embarrassed in front of other customers. When I said I would be posting a review the barmaid said 'yeah well right back atcha...I'll say what happened'. Fair enough. The landlord arrived. My husband explained. Eventually he said 'well I was going to let you have it but I can see you've made your mind up'. Absolutely right. How on earth he thought we would be happy to stay after that encounter I've no idea. I'm not a tourist. I'm local. I have family and friends in the town. It's up to them where they eat and drink of course but Penrith isn't short on pubs or places to get good food, or receive better service than we experienced. I suspect they may have lost a bit more than the price of a glass of wine that night. Which is a shame because it used be a cracking pub.

While looking for food we stumbled on this lucky find. The Bothy is a very welcoming themed cafe, due to most other venues in Kirby Stephen only serving drinks that day the bothy was busy but we still received a warm welcome and advised we would have a wait, we didn’t mind so placed our order. The food was different, not the cheapest but absolutely delicious, the staff even though very busy were so polite and kept us informed of progress with our order. A bit more of an offer for children would be a bonus.

We go to The Bridge about 4 times per year. We are not very extravagant but when we do eat out we want it to be better than I can make at home. Any guest we bring with us all love it too. Every meal we’ve had here has been excellent! My favourites are Twice Baked Cheese Soufflé, The Seafood Linguini, my hubby loves the Fish & Chips (he has this every time he goes, lol) . My son loves the Squid starter and I also love the Pate when it’s on. I had a gorgeous fish course in spring but I forget the name of the fish which was the whitest fish I’ve ever seen. I highly recommend Bridge Bistro.

Sadly, the food was very bland so I was waiting for one of the 7ish members of staff to ask if anything was okay/could they get us anything. Unfortunately, this never occurred so we had to flag someone down which proved difficult as it was obvious the staff did not want to engage with customers. For some reason, they were turning multiple customers away despite many empty tables that weren’t filled for the whole duration of our stay. Seems like a decent doss job for the local youths but not great for customers!
