What a fantastic place. The food, rooms, service and staff are all amazing. You are made to feel very welcome. The rooms are very comfy and cozy, the open fire in the bar is fantastic especially on a cold night with a pint. I stayed with work and can’t wait to come back. I wish I was stopping for the week.

Nice looking pub in middle of the village of Shap. Quite modern inside but tasteful. Offers rooms and serves food. Outside seating. A local ale or two on. Has quite a large level carpark out back that can accommodate small vans but must eat in pub (not just drinks) would depend how busy it is.

We loved our stay at The Greyhound with our greyhounds! Our room was gorgeous, really massive with a fabulous view. Breakfast and Dinner were both delicious with generous portions. The staff were so friendly and Tom was fantastic - he made us and our dogs feel extremely welcome. Shap is brilliant to stay in and we enjoyed chatting to the walkers doing The Coast to Coast. We were only there for the weekend but visited beautiful Haweswater and Wet Sleddle, a must if you are a "Withnail and I" fan. We definitely want to come back to the area again and would stay in The Greyhound without any hesitation!

Staff were friendly and personable. The rooms were quite basic though. They didn't seem to have been cleaned properly - ours had broken glass on the bedside table / floor. Food was good- although a little average in some cases. The chocolate fudge cake I had was definitely not homemade.. 😅 The sweet chilli chicken was great and not too spicy and my daughter had a huge portion of the little kids sausage and chips. There wasn't any small child cutlery to go with the huge portion, and no colouring or games offered either. That may be something to possibly look at going forwards to offer no matter what! Thanks for a good meal!

I recently had a Christmas meal here with a group of approximately 20 friends. All of the meals were pre-ordered, so there were no unplanned demands placed upon the kitchen. As far as I was aware, we were the only diners. My first course of paté and toast was really very poor. The paté itself wasn't great and certainly below supermarket standards. The salad garnish was limp, dehydrated and had clearly been sat around for quite some time. The accompanying toast was abysmal. It was stone cold, rock hard and could well have started life as yesterday's leftover garlic bread. As a result I along with some other diners left half of it. At this point, the staff should have been aware that something wasn't quite right and made enquires.... But no, the plates were simply cleared away. The main course of turkey with Christmas trimmings should have been straightforward. Unfortunately, this too was very poor. The 'garlic & rosemary' roast potatoes seemed to be missing both the garlic and the rosemary. They were really unpleasant being both rock hard and rather cold. Again, I had the feeling that these were just reheated leftovers. The sprouts were gray, rock hard and barely luke warm. The honey roast carrots seemed to be missing the honey and on top of that they were stone cold. The parsnips also suffered a similar fate. The braised red cabbage was reduced to a slightly congealed brown mass. The gravy was rather unpleasant in that it had seemingly split and was very oily. The pigs in blankets were rock hard and the Yorkshire pudding just oozed oil. The turkey however, was absolutely fine. Again, a number of half-eaten plates were cleared without mention. The Christmas pudding was to the same standard as the rest of the meal. Again, the accompanying brandy sauce seemed to be missing the key ingredient. Given that every member of the party pre-ordered, it is a reasonable expectation that the meals would be delivered to a decent standard. However, the quality didn't even measure up to the most basic of pub food. I certainly will not be returning.

Our favourite pub/restaurant to visit whenever we're in the Lakes and Penrith is a true gem. It has a warm, cosy atmosphere with a crackling fire, candles softly glowing, and the perfect blend of delicious food, wines, and ales. We go to The Bridge about 4 times per year. We are not very extravagant but when we do eat out we want it to be better than I can make at home. Any guest we bring with us all love it too. Every meal we’ve had here has been excellent! My favourites are Twice Baked Cheese Soufflé, The Seafood Linguini, my hubby loves the Fish & Chips (he has this every time he goes, lol) . My son loves the Squid starter and I also love the Pate when it’s on. I had a gorgeous fish course in spring but I forget the name of the fish which was the whitest fish I’ve ever seen. I highly recommend Bridge Bistro.

While looking for food we stumbled on this lucky find. The Bothy is a very welcoming themed cafe, due to most other venues in Kirby Stephen only serving drinks that day the bothy was busy but we still received a warm welcome and advised we would have a wait, we didn’t mind so placed our order. The food was different, not the cheapest but absolutely delicious, the staff even though very busy were so polite and kept us informed of progress with our order. A bit more of an offer for children would be a bonus.
